What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 173 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,881 of 4,545 positive).
Players praise the game's atmosphere, story, and charm, calling it a classic that still holds up. [1][2][3] Many note the punishing difficulty and dated mechanics, especially the checkpoint system. [4][5][6] Some criticize the PC port for input lag and poor controller support. [7][8][9]

Nostalgia carries this a long way, but the brutally trial-and-error gameplay and clunky 'gamespeak' mechanics haven't aged all that gracefully. The atmospheric world-building and creepy tone are still top-tier, but actually playing it nowadays feels more like a chore than an adventure. Worth a deep-sale look if you love retro classics, but expect to lean heavily on quicksaves.

A Gritty Classic That Earns Its Quirks Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee is one of those rare titles that, despite the march of time and tectonic shifts in game design philosophies, manages to hold onto its charm like a scrappy underdog clinging to a cause. First released in 1997 and now available on Steam, this cinematic platformer continues to earn praise from long-time fans and nostalgic newcomers alike — though not …

TLDR A landmark puzzle platformer, the atmosphere and mechanics still hold, but punishing save system make it harder to appreciate today. [18/20⭐, 18h🏅, 3/5💡(4 best ending)] Context Abe’s Oddysee is a classic puzzle platformer in which you play as an escaped slave taking on an evil corporation. While both the presentation and the mechanics feel somewhat dated, it’s easy to see why the game was such a phenomenon in …

Abe's Oddysee is a true classic that stands the test of time. From my first time playing it as a little kid, myself and my brothers huddled around the TV in the back room on our playstation continuously hurling ourselves into the path of falling meat chunks and falling to our deaths, all the way up to my most recent playthrough (which admittedly, was me sat next to my youngest brother watching him complete it as he …

positive · AI labelView post →The #RandomGameSaturday for me today is Oddworld Abe's Odyssey for the PC! I was obsessed with this series ever since playing a PSX demo of this one, up to Munch's Oddysee; which felt like some crazy subversive art future to me while anticipating its release. A unique game not sure if it holds up!
neutral · AI labelView post →Valkyrie Profile was this $20 game I bought at Best Buy instead of Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey, and I never regretted that decision. Beautiful pixel art, amazing soundtrack, VOICE ACTORS. Plus an AMAZING story where each character gets a beautiful dramatic backstory. A masterpiece.
neutral · AI labelView post →Haven't done a Random Game Saturday for a bit! Here's Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, perhaps one of the finest "more of the same" sequels I've played. Quiksave, expanded possession and GameSpeak; a true expansion of Abe's Oddyssey. Another one for the "Oh, THAT'S where my politics came from." pile.

neutral · AI labelView post →Weirdly, Oddworld: Abes Oddysee. I was freaking terrified of that game (I was 10). Couldn't get past the first screens. Scary creatures shooting each other. But I still wanted to explore the captivating world, & after researching the dev side to dispel the fear, I discovered a love for the media 😆

neutral · AI labelView post →Oddworld New ‘N’ Tasty✅ Forgot to mention that I finished this the other day! Incredible remake of an incredible game! Oddworld is such a special series for how nuanced it is in discussing things like corporate overreach, slavery, substance abuse, depression etc Game looks and plays beautifully!
positive · AI labelView post →The game grid is hard because I wanted to avoid slapping Oddworld into multiple categories lol. Also a lot of "tied for X" like retro is a toss up between rampage and blast corps.
neutral · AI labelView post →Oddworld… The first game I bought with my own money (I still have the receipt as faded as it is). I loved the narrative and how beautifully these well crafted creatures designs and the world were unapologetically themselves. I could talk endlessly about what I love of the first game and series.

positive · AI labelView post →I was too annoyed by my first playthrough of this supposed classic cinematic platformer to engage with it on its own terms, but now, years later, I've cooled off, replayed the game, and left no Mudokon behind. Unfortunately I was right the first time; Abe's Oddysee is strangely player hostile, and it's not just its age. The intended experience is clearly to not be able to solve most of the puzzles on your first playthrough because they involve mechanics that are tutorialised much later or are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had a gamedev from a respected studio tell me that same rumour about Steam pushing exclusivities. All it takes is a little digging to find out that's false. Some people were upset when Steam was installed with Valve's own games as a launcher, and later more and more devs launched their games on Steam as a store because they wanted to. The alternative, Games For Windows Live, was lame and unstable. It was just the a smart choice for those that didn't want to make their own launcher. Also, don't…

neutral · AI labelView post →Abe's Oddysee from the PlayStation 1 era was really difficult. I only have vague memories of it. The idea of integrating loading screens with game graphics was really good even back then. Like the elevator sequences. Somehow, I remembered it being scarier. Thanks to the poor graphics at the time, your imagination did the rest. If you want to relive the game and indulge in some nostalgia, but with a controller, I recommend the community project R.E.L.I.V.E. I have no problems with controller…
