What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 170 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,006 of 4,653 positive).
Players find the early game fun but the late game repetitive and boring. [1][2][3] Some reviewers praise the mix of action RPG and settlement building. [4][5][6]

Controller support sucks ass. UI isnt all that great in general. "I need wood but cant cut down the trees right in front of me" - The Game.

What a lackluster game. Building stuff is meaningless. Making stuff is meaningless. Explore everything is meaningless. The main quest is a platformer and has nothing to do with the rest of the game. Platformer stuff is annoying and breaks the gameflow. Sieges are annoying too because you will break your own building so you can attack, so building fortification is meaningless and you don't know how many waves are …

Here's the thing about Regions of Ruin - it's like that mate who peaks too early at the pub. Starts off brilliant, proper exciting, but by the end of the night, they're just repeating the same stories and you're checking your watch. The basics are quite good, actually. You've got these lovely little dwarves running about in their pixel world - and when I say pixel, I don't mean those rubbish mobile game graphics. …

eXplore, eXpand and eXterminate? You could say those are the three 3 mechanics of the game: first you explore some areas and gather loot + resources then return to your village and expand buildings for shops, bonuses and a storage and then go to other areas with your new found loot and exterminate your enemies. The early game is fun and makes you have a plan but later is becomes a bit dull but still fun. 8.5/10, …

I liked the early game/mid game alot, it was fun, getting better loot is always fun, stealth + throwing axes is OP can take down every enemy without getting hit once. Late game it does get boring, since the game suffers from what it has in the beggining, it's just the same thing over and over again, go to a location on the map, fight baddies, go to another one, to find some runes or talk to a dwarf that gives you …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game a lot, but there's a lot I hate about it. I cant recommend it at full price. Your followers don't know how to jump, and they attack whatever they see. What's the point of adding a stealth mechanic if your teammates just instantly give you away? Even if you tell them to wait, they still attack. It takes ages to level up, and there's no stealth skill tree. Sometimes the game tells you the stats on a piece of equipment is better, by putting green arrows next to the stats when you…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The early game is quite fun - a little side scrolling action game with some RPG elements. But like many little RPG/Action games, the fun part kind of ends once you get overpowered and the new gear and new levels stop coming quickly. Unfortunately for this game, that happns fairly early, and you're left with the task of cleaning up the rest of the map with ease. And then you realize there's a million map locations and there's not really a reason to visit them all, and it's getting repetitive,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a game that isn't generally something I play. The RPG portion of the game was enticing so decided to give it a shot. In short, found it to be an OK game while hardcore indie Gamers may appreciate it a lot more than I did. Regions of Ruin's gameplay is straight forward and basic. The player is tasked with building a camp, exploring new areas, gathering resources, managing workers, defending wave attacks, and attacking settlements or barracks belonging to a certain enemy. The controls…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This one had a really really rough start on the steam deck, but I am glad I stubbornly returned to it and attempted to make it work. It sucked me in for about three weeks, and now that I am at the end, as much fun as it was, I am glad I'm about to be done. The gameplay is rather simple: Sidescroller action RPG, you have a shield, a melee weapon, and can unlock a throwing weapon. 3 stats, 6 gear slots, 4 skill trees. You use food to explore the map, discovering new places to travel to, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very repetitive and dull.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was... fine? Played on steam deck, controls were clunky at best, gameplay was okay but quickly repetitive. Maybe worth trying if you already own it, but I wouldn't suggest buying it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't play for long at all. There were two things holding me back. One, the combat is delayed. It is done by intent and I simply don't enjoy it. When I press an attack (especially a basic one) I want it to happen when I press the key/button. It's particularly noticeable when you are using throwing weapons. I would often throw a weapon the wrong direction because it launched significantly later after releasing the button. Second issue is the controls. They just don't feel good. Its not…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this on againt off again for years like a bad relationship, remembering all the good but forgetting that it has a terrbly boring loop after sometime, combat is more about mashing buttons, because while you can "easily" manage your stamina loss with dodging, power attacking and managing 1 melee enemy, throw in a ranged enemy in the background which gives you two things to juggle as if you were playing guitar hero with the bars playing at different speeds and places, there is nothing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun and rewarding early game. Not sure if it was just my build but the last 10 hours of the game were not even a slight challenge, to the point where I three shot the final boss of the game. Also a little peeved the settlement achievement is bugged, as it is the last one I need to 100%.

neutral · AI labelView post →Tentative Recommendation Side-scrolling action platformer with RPG and town-building elements. Simple but serviceable mechanically. Stretches its few ideas out close to the breaking point, with very little fresh content beyond the first two hours, making for a decent but somewhat repetitive playthrough. 6/10

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun mix of colony building and rpg hacknslash. You feel a dwarf through and through with an unstoppable troupe and you can gear up to be absurdly OP (but some arrows can still be quite the trouble). The way of exploring the map was really neat and I wished we could have some more info on locations, especially after you clear some it became hard to track cleared places that still had relevant things. I didn't expect this kind of gameplay but I enjoyed it thoroughly in its glorious…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A serviceable Kingdom-ish game with Diablo-lite RPG elements A fun little game that I'd recommend picking up on a discount. It’s the kind of game that feels better suited for casual, lunch-break sessions rather than extended, focused playthroughs. The graphics and gameplay are reminiscent to Kingdom but with a little bit of everything from other games: more dedicated settlement building/resource management, combat and minion system, surprisingly fun enough puzzle and platforming, looter RPG…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good little Indie game for the price. The Stealth AI is surprisingly good. Better than in some AAA games that lay the focus more on it. But once you get mercenaries you can mostly ignore combat. Which is a bit of a shame but you still have the exploring, base building, resource management and puzzles to entertain you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fun Lot of ppl complaining about tough enemies and throwing being OP. Game is clearly not well balanced, just get better gear. You'll deal 1M dmg per melee crit if you spend some time doing quests. The only thing that actually sucks is that idle game in the tavern. Why is it there? Litteral waste of time that thing
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really boring and repetitive. It may be a fun little junkfood game for some, but for me, I'd rather play something else.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game twice. The first time (a blind run) was from a few years back, and I didn't use any online guides. For the second run, I played recently and used online guides. While I did enjoy the game, there are many frustrating parts about it. For example, there's no point in enchanting any weapons or armour since the random ones you find are ultimately stronger anyways. This is due to the fact that there's a 4000 point cap on enchantments, so you can't create crazy OP weapons or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After just a couple of evenings, you'll realize that the game is very repetitive. Surprisingly, I can't say it's bad—some people might even like it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've uninstalled the game after ~25 minutes of playing, which indicates it definitely wasn't worth my time since I have refunded the game. = I definitely won't recommend a forgettable game for myself so I won't do it to you either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty solid little grindy game. I enjoyed exploring the map, and building up the settlement. I will admit that once I had a really strong character and had maxed all the buildings out, I did end up skipping about 1/4 of the map's locations as there wasn't really anything I could do with the items. But I guess that just means there's different ways to reach the end which is neat. Only issue I noticed was that enemy archers seem overpowered. While I could tank just about every melee enemy and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even non-elite/boss enemies can take many minutes to kill one of. And this involves just repeating the same pattern of move/attack and maybe dash. And you often have to kill several to clear just one area. It's very repetitive.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i dont know how I got this game. i dont know why i even started this game. but the exponentially scaling was really satisfying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this game to get boring quite quickly. It has clunky controls especially when trying to platform. Combat is quite dull. City building is uninteresting and doesn't really add much to the game for the amount of resources you have to collect.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can recommend the game, it has unique style with landscapes and places to explore, the achievements are also not hard, grab it cheap on sale :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its an OK little side scroller battling game, with management aspects bolted on. The core gameplay gets tedious quickly, and there isn't much variation. Plus, the management aspect is weirdly compromised by the fact that playing an idle minigame in the tavern gets you huge rewards that have no basis in the logic of the world, and so it undermines the development work. I got about 8 hours of mild entertainment out of it, then played a bit more seeing if there was anything else. Unfortunately, no.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game's controls are horrible and difficult to use, it also says it works with controller but regardless of any steam setting or research, nothing makes the controller work in the game, the game is overly complicated with the controls and this ruins the gameplay for me. I hope the sequel is improved with this, otherwise that one will also be a refund as well after I try it if it has bad controls as well.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Region of Ruin" Overview The game that pleasantly surprised me, was picked up at one of the free games giveaways and had been on the shelves of my library for a long time. But the day I tried it - finally came. At first, I was expecting a classic platformer with rogue-like elements - but I got a game in the RPG + RTS genre, which have been quite surprising. Minimalist combat mechanics, dashing around the location, puzzles of varying difficulty levels. Leveling up your character, talents,…
