Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 174 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,485 of 1,689 positive).
Players praise Ozymandias as a streamlined, fast-paced 4X game that cuts bloat. [1][2][3] Many find it addictive and perfect for quick sessions, often lasting 30-90 minutes. [1][4][5] Some criticize the lack of depth, repetitive gameplay, and poor UI. [6][7][8]

Ozymandias went for a really strange idea - to take a game genre that is all about complexity and lots of mechanics - and to throw most of them out of the window to make a fast-paced casual experience. It worked exactly as I expected it to. Nations. The only difference among those is the starting location and a very small set of bonuses that becomes irrelevant 10 minutes into the run. What is worse - those sets of …

Ozymandias is an excellent take on the 4x genre. This game cuts away at the bloat that detracts from the likes of Civilization, resulting in a smoother, quicker, and more immediately rewarding experience. The Good The AI does not pull any punches, it always makes the immediately optimal moves and safe progression. You will be punished for not taking them seriously The base games maps are generally pretty fun Games …

I had to add this game to my "Hidden" list, as it's dangerously addictive. You might think how could a 30-minute 4X be as engaging as Civilization? Well, in a nutshell, replaces "One More Turn" with "One More Game". It really does strip the genre down to a slim, elegant core. It's not easy, the AI is generally competent, and not all start positions are equal. And that's part of what makes it compelling. You'll try, …

It's exactly what they promise it to be; a fast paced, simplified 4X type game. It's surprisingly stylized and pleasant to the eye, with excellent UI and readability. I'm not a huge fan of the 4X genre, even though I did enjoy Civ 3 back in the day, and played a fair bit of Galactic Civ 2. Ozymandias, however, is a bite-sized version of the formula, and I must say it goes down very well.

A pick-up-and-play 4X, where instead of “one more turn” it’s “one more game.” The board game-like simplicity of the hex tiles and the three-resource economy feel like they could be replicated in physical media, but setup and calculation would take so much time, especially once the incomes get into the triple digits. It underlines even more how convenient this format is. I love the way it has you tackle exploration …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Ozymandias poetry game is weirdly thrilling because it’s got a very high entry bar, and that’s not how online games work. You’re meant to name a film beginning with C, or the best pie.
neutral · AI labelView post →Every game plays the same, you brutalize the ai's near you while the furthest away ai goes on an unopposed conquering spree, swallowing up half the map since no on is opposing him. Then you have to race the bloated ai to victory by randomly adding population to your cities or building a chanced based wonder opportunity. There, that's the Ozymandias experience, save your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game but sadly I just don't all that much Positives It's quick - I like strategy games but I struggle to have the time now to play something really long like Civ I think the mechanics are explained pretty well and I didn't have any problems understanding the basics fairly quickly. There are some various pre-set maps and scenarios to explore and you can choose your civ. The game looks neat and tidy. The mini-quests work OK for me as they don't require a huge…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →And the game starts like the Ozymandias poem. With a carving of the eternal Hallownest, the last and only civilization, entirely gone except for the greed and violence. The entire history of this kingdom easily could be a couple of days 😭 for the variety of lifespan of the different species.
neutral · AI labelView post →Okay, uh, how to put it. I like this game. It is polished, it is clean, core gameplay loop is solid. However. 1) It is not a 4X game. You do not explore. You do not exploit. You do not exterminate. 2) It is not a 4X game. There is no diplomacy, trade, or espionage. It is a board game. Coupled with the player having no knowledge of what AI is doing during their turn, and with obnoxious tile-threat mechanic, it becomes a frustrating puzzle. 3) It is not a strategy game. The only valid direction…

In retaliation, some ‘GAME OF THRONES’ fans allegedly review-bombed “Ozymandias,” dropping its 13-year perfect 10.0 to 9.8.
neutral · AI labelView post →This is not a 4X game. There is no exploration: the map is known from the outset. It's basically something like Go but themed around a map with tiles having varying properties--so essentially a puzzle game about domination of territory. It's decent for what it is, with a good tutorial, but if, like me, you were expecting a 4X game from the way that it is described by the developers in the store, you might be disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't think it's a *bad* game, but it really isn't a 4X like it claims to be. By shortening the playtime to a single sitting, they cut out enough that's closer to a strategy board game. It felt fine, but relatively shallow.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine. Doesn't keep the attention too long because despite different civilizations, the screens and mechanics are all the same. Would recommend below 10 dollars.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would give this game a mixed review if that was possible. It doesn't cost all that much and like many of the positive reviews here truly state it offers a compact civilization type game in about 45 minutes, its friendly to newbies, the core mechanics work fine and it has a great tutorial. The game gets a thub down from me do its replayability. Factions have a template, but nothing else unique about them. That means the militant Spartains and Assyrians are exactly the same except for their…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, rules are simple enough to easily grasp but allows for emergent gameplay. Encompasses Civ's feeling of "just.. one more turn" quite well, and the games are relatively pretty quick. However, the game UI could use some polish. One gripe I have is that after winning I'm not able to see which missions I've completed (wonders built) to get the winning crowns. Even after saving and reloading a turn before, that section is wiped - don't know it it's intentional, but I would like to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Every game you play in Ozymandias plays exactly the same.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ozymandias is not a 4X game (no exploration, no dimplomacy), it is a basically a board game and nothing more. Seems like many people enjoy this game, but i was only bored out of my mind, most likely because I was expecting a proper 4X game. My rating is 4/10, no recomendation from me.

neutral · AI labelView post →- Playtime: 9,5 hours (tutorial + ~6 games) - Played: 2026 - Context: I love 4X but don't really care for Civilization. Intro Ozymandias is a strategy game in which you pick one of up to 10 different types of civilizations and try to accomplish a number of goals like "own X areas" or "have X power". Gameplay consists of annexing areas, moving land/sea units, doing research, building/growing cities and balancing food/research/wealth/power. The map consists of hexes, each with its own cost…

neutral · AI labelView post →9.5/10 This is such a sleeper hit of a digital board game. I've gotten pleasantly lost over the past several months picking this up, beating a few of the several dozen different playable positions and maps - all with their own challenges - putting the game down and coming back a few weeks later to remember what made it so engrossing. It's quick and easy to learn, but several starting positions can be a real challenge! I'd gladly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good solo board game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its really simplistic but has all elements you know from a strategy game (except politics). Its not a big deep game but it also doesnt want to be one. Its a nice little game for in between where one match is not longer than 60 to 90 minutes. But even though its simplistic it has alot of content.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For the record, I don't think he's alive Also, don't be mad because of the spoiler. It's been almost a decade since this game was released, and I cut out as much as I could. This is like posting the Ozymandias scene from Breaking Bad

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As good a game as it is a poem as it is an episode of Breaking Bad. It's a really fun, simple strategy game which can be played in one sitting. All the different maps and civilizations give you plenty of varied content to play, even though the base mechanics never change it's enough variation to make each challenge feel fresh. I finally 100%ed it. Canaanites on the Near East is rough. My one criticism is the victory conditions. Points earned towards victory feel very divorced from actual…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Also a terrific historical game, now on Android: Secret Games and published by @goblinzstudio.com Ozymandias (Also on Steam on sale for 4 more hours) A gem; an abstraction of 4x historical empire games that offers radically streamlined, but still INCREDIBLY challenging (in best way) choices 1/
positive · AI labelView post →A cute little game that knows what it wants to be and executes well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think while it’s a good game it’s not for me and that’s why I have to leave this review. It’s so zoomed out, that it’s really just a math and spatial puzzle. The theme really doesn’t come through much at all. It’s all about optimizing your position on the board but there’s no asymmetry or theme beyond what terrain a space is. Just not in depth or thematic enough to hold my interest for more than the 12 hours I put in. I do wish the developer luck in their next project though, because…

neutral · AI labelView post →Felt closer to a board game than a grand strategy title. Calling it "Grand Strategy" is a bold tag choice. Yeah, the map is big, but the rest? Also, I wonder who decided the whole of Anatolia has "yellow" vegetation. Combat feels odd and there's barely any proper information about how it works. It's shallower than a board game, except on the budget management side. They tried a few things with the management systems, but it ends up more annoying than fun or strategic in any meaningful way. The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I can't have a remaster of Civilization: Revolution 1&2 on Steam then this is the next best thing. A fun, deep empire builder where you can finish a game within a couple of hours. Exactly what I've been looking for.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Bronze age setting is what originally brought me to the game. The clean, fun, simple 4x gameplay with a great UI and feel is what's kept me coming back! The story campaign/tutorial is one of the cleanest introductions to the mechanics of any game I've ever seen, building up the complexity at just the right rate to keep itself fresh but not overwhelming. Being able to change the difficulty by wealth generation, civ choice AND win conditions is a big plus! Being able to go up in difficulty…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ozymandias: Bronze Age Empire Sim is a fascinating experiment in the evolution of the 4X strategy genre, reimagining what empire-building can feel like when stripped of unnecessary complexity. Developed by The Secret Games Company and published by Goblinz Publishing and IndieArk, it offers a refreshing alternative to the sprawling micromanagement and overwhelming menus that often define traditional 4X games. Rather than burying players in minutiae, Ozymandias distills the essence of conquest,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Surprising amount of nuances hiding behind the simplistic exterior of this minimalist 4X. Very addictive thanks to streamlined mechanics, definitely has "one more turn" magic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good attempt at a bite-sized 4X, though I find that most of my matches still lasts about 1-2 hours. I enjoyed the framing and writing in the tutorial, it's a good intro and sets the scene nicely. Graphics are basic but serviceable. The interface is pretty good but with how crucial upgrades are, I find that I cycle through the submenus every turn, sometimes multiple times. It feels like bringing those into the main map screen would prevent the need for the constant opening and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →KAMGUSTA'S MINI REVIEW It's a nice take on the "area majority / influence" genre - it could be easily mistaken for a board game. It is NOT a 4X, as it's very limited in your exploration, expansion, trading, research and even the actual actions you can do (take land and/or move unit). You just play on a limited screen-size map where you have to extend your empire until it reaches enemies' borders. Then you try to take their lands piece by piece. The real choices are planning where to expand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I don't dislike the game, it has some serious marks against it. One is that I got stuck in the combat tutorial stage and it straight up won't let me progress until I beat this, but also won't give me any useful information on how to beat it. I have replayed the tutorial twice up to that point and paid attention to the explanations but can't make any progress, which apparently affects my ability to play the rest of the game. The way numbers are presented is very odd as well, I'd love it to…

neutral · AI labelView post →Love it. It's a map and some numbers, that's enough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun, quick paced strategy game. None of the dread of being 5 hours into a game and realizing you've lost like Civilization
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very slick and underrated simple tactics game. Not particularly deep, but fun for a few hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ozymandias is my name. King of kings is my game. I'm whackn' the White House like a vandal and keeping gov't shut to avoid the scandal (boots and cats boots and cats)
neutral · AI labelView post →8.5/10. Genuinely surprised by how much I like this game. A super simplified turn-based strategy game. If you are wondering about this game, you will for sure know if it is for you or not within the first 2 hours. In the 6 hours I've played, I think I have finished 5 games (1 of them being the story/tutorial that they have). Get it, play the story and if by then you are yet to be intrigued, return it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is nothing wrong with a game being basic, but then the gameplay that exists has to be stellar. I don't think the gameplay in this game is good enough for a recommendation, although it's not terrible either. In my longest game I was waiting for random troop boost cards, turn after turn, to give me enough +strength to do anything.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can hace the whole essence of a civilization-like game, concentrated and refinated into 1-2 hours games. For me, it has a perfect balance between all what makes the 4X genre adictive, and a fast and easy-to-learn gameplay. The largest con of this game is the limited number of scenarios (I bought all of them, and I enjoyed them very much). Also, it has an ansynchronous mode for multiplayer, which allows you to play with many people (I think i have played more time in multiplayer than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First actually recent video game! 🤯 Ozymandias is a 4x game you can play in under an hour. Dont get me wrong. I love me some Civ 6. Enemy at the Gates is cool. All hail Stellaris or EU or Galactic Civilizations or whatever. But 4x games are looooong. Its an achievement worth hailing to condense it.
positive · AI labelView post →This is a fun, fast playing 4x game, which is unusual in the genre. I have not tried multiplayer, but I enjoy the single player mode quite a bit.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A stripped down 4X where you play bronze age civilizations competing for territory. Has a good amount of depth, different scenarios with different maps and different civilizations with varying bonuses. Scratches the strategy itch nicely.
