What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 75 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (227 of 270 positive).
Players praise Perimeter as a unique and innovative RTS with original mechanics like terraforming and energy-based resources. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game has a steep learning curve and poor tutorials that leave players confused. [4][5][6] Several players mention the game suffers from outdated graphics, repetitive soundtrack, and interface issues. [7][3][4]

LET ME START WITH THE BAD: AI sucks. Your units can land on terrain that will kill them. What's up with that? I lost more units that way than to the scourge. They cannot distinguish hostile terrain from good terrain. On defense mode, your units can, and will go into said terrain ON THEIR OWN without the player commanding them. If a building is between it and the enemy, it will NOT move to have line of sight with the …

Perimeter is a little-known gem of the real-time strategy genre. It mixes a rate-based game flow resembling that of Total Annihilation, intensive terraforming, a psychedelic posthumanist story, and graphics advanced for its time.

Awesome game. WARNING requires you to think. One of very few RTS games with truly original mechanics. PROS: - Deformable voxel terrain that actually matters - Weird story and alien setting - Variable factions - Underground units - Jumping bomb-sharks - Weaponised tornados CONS: - Older graphics - Bad voice acting - Limited explanation of game mechanics

My favorite RTS of all time. Had it on disk for years before buying it again on Steam. Perimeter provides excellent story, an interesting and unique world, and fun mechanics all wrapped up into a game with far more flexibility than the average RTS. You can really choose your playstyle and adapt as the game progresses. Perimeter has immense replayability and is an excellent experience overall. The standalone …

9/10 + good presentation (especially as i remember it when it was released), fantastic atmosphere + incredible soundrack, great sound in general that contributes to the atmosphere + very original theme, sci-fi setting, dark at times (trying to leave earth and reach the promised land may seem common, but the plot unfolds very nicely and in a unique way) + gameplay wise it's an RTS game, very fresh in ideas and full …

You play both for capturing and keeping the ground and assault all the time. But now you'll ask.. That's what we do in strategy games, isn't it? The answer is NOT exactly. Before you begin playing the game... Read the manual. I explain some things but I can't cover everything.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →perhaps little-known is that Vangers (1998) is part of the same narrative continuum as the game Perimeter (2004), also by K-D Lab. i've posted about it before, but the story is genuinely fascinating. a lot of depth was lost in translation, but has been restored to an extent in a recent Steam patch.
neutral · AI labelView post →More of a puzzle game than an RTS. I used to play this game way before it came to steam and I enjoyed it now, after many years. The concept is cool and unique and the campaign is pretty fun indeed. There are several problems with the game though: - Repetitive soundtrack and voiceacting. There is 3 factions in the game and like... 2 tracks per faction in total. So, I would recommend listening to your own music. - Game has no widescreen options and doesn't support multiple monitors properly, so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I was doing environmental storytelling in a game I would write shit like “THE HOGS HAVE BREACHED THE PERIMETER” on the walls in blood, giving players an adrenaline spike in anticipation of hogs that will never arrive, and making it more likely they miss signs of the actual threat
neutral · AI labelView post →Well, what can I say? It’s an old game, but it’s a good game. I remember, I couldn’t beat the campaign years back due to the need to distribute your attention, to dispense it on the different tasks. That’s why I think it’s good: you must be in absolute control of situation, of every part of yours and enemy’s forces. Some may call that babysitting, but I think it makes you think, adapt, be fast and precise in your actions. The storyline, its campaign, the world itself together reflect these…

neutral · AI labelView post →Funny that Perimeter is Marathon's "beginner" map, because Hauler has to be bloodiest battleground in the game so far. Cramped, dark, and stuffed with secret routes in and out. In any other battle royale-sized game it'd be the standout location. What a place.
positive · AI labelView post →Perimeter is a project that falls into a category of 'a truly great game that was not a smash hit but did not achieve a cult calssic status because it wasn't made in the West'. A small introduction, if I may: Once upon a time there lived a man by the alias of KranK. A shooting star of the young Russian videogame industry. Having recently made extremely successful Vangers, he now set out to conquer RTS. And conquer RTS he did. Because here you are in a constant struggle not only against the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me get three paragraphs out of the way real fast.. This game's pretty old, and I'm pretty sure it was experimental at the time. I got it when I was a kid in an age where online multiplayer was flaky at best, and downloadable games of this scale were unfathomable. As a result, I had few "big" games and played the few that I had *constantly*. I've become relatively good at Perimeter, but it took months since I had absolutely no help from anyone else. What people say about the tutorial is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has some interesting concepts, but is marred by bugs in the tutorial and a poor interface. The tutorial mission cuts off explanations with new lines of dialogue constantly. In game, the units can be hard to see/select, and can be hard to tell what's damaging them. Also doesn't seem to be possible to move units of a certain type individually, though I'm not sure on that one. Perhaps it's just not properly explained, or that explanation was cut off.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nightfall brought marathon's most detailed and engaging game mode by far and i'm pretty hopefully that Big Perimeter builds on what they established. i think it presents a significant challenge for the game designers: how do you make a "starting area" that never stops being meaningful/enjoyable?
positive · AI labelView post →A good game for fans of old-fashioned RTS if you can get a deal on it; it doesn't hold up as well as C&C or TA of course but the gameplay is still fun.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Painful game. The tutorial explained nothing having anything to do with the first game. Apparently, everything I had was under attack in the first game by invisible somethings with no explaination. I built a second energy station and it was attacked. The ground appeared to be splitting under the buildings which may have something to do with something but I couldn't tell. So I sat there awaiting something to happen which didn't until the power ran out and I failed the misson. At this point, the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those games that must've been pretty cool for its time, but it's pretty bad for today's standards. Story The story Actually kind of interesting? But the presentation is bland, boring and sometimes even disorienting as your camera follows balls (each representing a world) revolving around other balls in the campaign briefing screen. Learning curve In my opinion, the most annoying thing about the game is the steep learning curve, and how you got to learn everything yourself.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I could not get it to run. The solution for me was to change the Fullscreen parameter equal to 0 ,in the perimeter configuration file. I got it to run, then the problems began. Even the tutorial is misleading and unclear. The mission objectives are meaningless unless you have been playing the game for years. The pyramida level finished me off. Even after watching a youtube video of a runthrough of the level, I just could not connect the actions of the player in the video to the mission…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What idiot made this crap. It keeps telling you that an energy core is under attack, but there is no sign of anything actually attacking any energy cores until the core under attack is destroyed. By this time, of course, it is too late to do anything about it!!! I may at some point of time try to play again, but for now this is my review!!

Enemy vehicles attempting to breach it get vaporized. It’s a game-changer that adds strategic depth. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is definitely a very unique game; probably the first RTS to introduce terraforming at a truly global level. In its core, the gameplay formula is relatively traditional: the player has a moveable HQ, a resource chain focused on storage and production of energy, and a number of upgradeable military unit types, each one with certain strengths and weaknesses. Sounds simple enough... Except everything needs to be built on even terrain, so the landscape needs to be flattened by a special digger…
