Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 103 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (190 of 222 positive).
Players praise the game as a faithful and improved remaster of the original beat 'em up. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the high price and lack of significant changes for returning players. [4][5] Several players appreciate the new content like enemy characters and co-op modes. [6][7][8]

Look how the massacred my boy! After much consideration, I decided to give the "Ultimate" version a try, and oh man, I don't know why exactly this game had to be remade by making almost everything inferior. I absolutely adore the original version, and I have quite literally 100% it (down to maximizing every single playable character and getting all Steam achievements). Do note that I STILL recommend the original …

Before I start, I'd like to thank the Rocket Panda Games and the PB community for keeping the PB series alive, and I can't wait to introduce new players to this game! This review will remain spoiler free. Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Ultimate is the second rerelease of PB:BG, the other being Battle Grounds Overdrive. PB:BGU now uses Unreal Engine 5, and this game was completely redone from the ground up. In terms …

The Skyrim of beat em' ups, this is a popular genre classic that has been repackaged and re-released on every possible device since the PS3/360 era. Back again, and this time fully remastered!(?) Except it's not. Frankly, they've changed hardly anything, and certainly not enough to justify a $25 price tag and an "Ultimate" title. Doesn't help they removed the original and already perfectly fine version from the …

🏙️ I'm so excited for the re-release! It's a wonderful title and a great game in the genre. In case you were wondering, it has differences from the original. Besides some visual changes, there are many small QoL improvements. It's less grindy, there are new enemy types / behaviors, new mechanics (skills equip), a different balance (Nightmare is harder), but the coolest thing is the ability to play as any enemy, …

This game brings back what made the old Phantom Breaker good, and improves on it with new content like Equipment and passive skills, and funny extra characters based on the mobs. Definitely recommended, for new players and for returning players.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Skyrim of beat 'em ups is back with yet another port/remaster, but the title having Ultimate in it feels accurate. First off, the marketing for this game is a bit poor and doing the upgrade a disservice. The combat is a lot looser than previous versions, with lots more jump cancel points and easier ways to get into air combos. The sixth level, which was a terrible frustrating maze in previous versions, is now completely linear. I have bought this game several times and getting to this…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to enjoy this game but the sound issues it has currently is making it difficult for me to enjoy, you can still faintly hear background music even when setting it to 0. And other sound effects are only adjustable by 10s and even at 10 its still pretty loud and "annoying" cause everytime you make an action or pick something up it makes a sound. Wish we could lower the volume a little bit more maybe by 5s or lower the amount of voice and SE procs. Was told from one of the developers…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With it being labeled a "Remaster" of the original Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds, I was very excited to think that it would play just like the original with some added features. Although there are features such like playing as enemy NPCs; the game still chose to keep some gimmicks and mechanics from the Phantom Breaker: Overdrive version of the game, which I myself was not too fond of. The game is fun if you are looking to play with friends in story or arcade mode, but after all is done and…

Phantom Breaker Omnia The developers of Asuka 120% got together later to work on this anime game, which inherits the same ideas like clashes and guard cancels. Also, the ability to choose Styles with mechanics like double jump and different combo rules. store.steampowered.com/app/1184560/...

neutral · AI labelView post →The only notable addition to this deluxe version, are enemy characters included in the roster. Remaster is false advertisement. I beat it earlier, and this is literally the same feature-wise as the vanilla game. Could not tell any balancing or minor changes even. Main characters movesets are same. Not worth $25, unless you are a newcomer. For people returning, $10 is being generous for what is essentially DLC adding half-baked enemy characters with reduced movesets.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i really wish that leveling was just for stats, if anything, or that arcade mode made it so you played with maxed out characters and was balanced for that. because now there's over 30 characters and starting a new character with no abilities who can't even dash or double jump is insane. i saw a review that said to slow down the XP rate and don't ever listen to that guy, he is a masochist. but the game is really really fun so you should get it anyway
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sorry I bought Phantom Breaker Omnia on sale and I think it might be the best fighting game ever. "Asuka 120% but weebier and a quarter of the cast is janky pre-rendered 3D sprites" I'm in love
positive · AI labelView post →I love beat em'ups! This looked promising with the selection of characters, story mode and cutesy art style. Sadly, the gameplay is NOT good. I tried to like it, but its either to simple or just.. not fun and not enough variety? I got bored in 3 minutes. Cleared a few stages.. but stopped. This has so much potential. I don't know anything about this game [other than being a remake? I dunno]. It is not fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In general - average experience. Battles mostly are mindless button mashers with a lot of enemies. You have 2 lines, you can get level ups, improve some stat, skills, drops. Good: - Lot of characters to play - Has 6 player coop mode and 8 player pvp - Visuals are good - Crossplay - Local play (only 4 people) - Progression with leveling and some drops Bad: - Not much of explaining how stuff work. Tips are hidden behind 'Reference' option, instead of saying FAQ, Help, Tips, Manual, etc. Even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A modern re-release/remaster of my favorite kawaii anime girl beat-em up game? Definitely the EASIEST cop of all time!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate (PB:BGU) has cute and good-looking character sprites - that's pretty much where the positives end for me. PB:BGU is a beat'em up that plays a bit more like a 2D fighting game instead of a traditional beat'em up - a consequence of this is that you press UP to jump, DOWN to crouch, and you can't move up or down on the platform, instead you switch between one of two lanes to fight on. While none of PB:BGU's other aspects are terrible, they are unfortunately…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This isn't your OG Battlegrounds. No sir! *Said reviewer received game before release to test and review the game!* A mix of both Omnia and Battlegrounds, Ultimate is back and ready for Shenanigans. 6 player co-op? Yes sir. Don't mind if I bully every enemy and boss. 8 player BG mode? Heck yes. It has team battling! From 4v4 to 2 on 2s, there is something for someone, regardless of skill. Some of the playable NPCS are broken, and may need some tweaking to remain balanced. The…

neutral · AI labelView post →Neutral jump and back jump are more traditional, albeit slow. Then, you have **clashes**. Everything **clashes**, almost like Phantom Breaker Omnia on steroids. If you play this game, you're going to see this hitspark so very often it's unreal.
neutral · AI labelView post →I was doing some reading on this game and apparently the original Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds was already made for Xbox back in 2013 or something. So that makes this a port, but the implementation really sucks. I think I'm going to ask for my money back. I bought this to play with my kids. The 30 page explainer tucked away in the menu helps but so much is unexplained. We can't figure out how to spend our skill points. I read on Steam community that it is in between games..which are 40…

I've been a fan of the Phantom breaker series since i came across the original Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds on Xbox 360. Now Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate is a full on remake made in Unreal Engine 5. This version of Battle Grounds aims to be as faithful to the original and Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds OverDrive and let me just say it passes that in every aspect. everything that you know…

Hands down the best Phantom Breaker game, and this Ultimate edition is amazing! -- Honestly, only thing it needs? MORE STAGES. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's #RandomGameSaturday time again and this week I have Phantom Breaker: Extra. It's a fighting game with a visual novel character as a fighter! You'd think that would make for a novel (heh) oddity in the genre, but I can think of at least 4 other fighters that also have VN characters, so...
neutral · AI labelView post →Very nostalgic playing this. I appreciate the new remixes as well as the english dubbing. I was hoping that more characters from the fighting game series would be implemented into the game but it's fine because we got to play as all the enemy characters which was actually something I wanted to do back when I had this game on my Xbox 360.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just recently found out about the remaster and had to check it out ASAP. I was very excited to play this as PBBG was one of my very first beat 'em up's and a game I grew up with ꉂ(˵˃ ᗜ ˂˵) !! From an honest perspective, this game doesn't fully capture the essence of it predecessor but it still offers that nostalgic experience I believe fans will appreciate. I think a standout feature is the fond memories that this game evoked, with the characters, the art style, and even offering the option to…

neutral · AI labelView post →I've been playing Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive and I'm happy to say they've finally did it after iterating on the same game for over a decade they have finally made a version that cuts out the tedium and feels snappy to play
positive · AI labelView post →I don't play a lot of beat'em ups, but PBBG has satisfying gameplay, great presentation, and fun anime girls, so I found it really enjoyable. However, this doesn't feel that different from the original, so I don't know how much of an improvement it actually is for people who already owned it, but for anyone who doesn't, this is an easy pick.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Impressively, this has to be the worst feeling beat 'em up I've ever played. If you don't go full aggro ham on the enemies immediately, they'll hit you once. At this point, all 30 of them will overlap and gang up on you, and proceed to infini-juggle you to death. It's as awful playing as it is to read.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Phantom Breaker Ultimate got its first DLC and its a collab with Kaho Shibuya which is her as a baking themed magical girl apparently it was her idea to have a baugette as her main weapon she's actually so fun i wish she was in the fighting game
neutral · AI labelView post →This is my favorite beat-em-up. The biggest 2 draws for me are: 1. Lanes. My biggest struggle with most beat-em-ups is lining up my character so my hits actually connect to the enemy. This game has just 2 lanes to jump between that eliminates almost all of that headache. (I say almost because it's not always 100% clear which lane the enemy is in) 2. Fighting-game style combos. Doing a 9 hit combo canceled into a super, and canceling that into an EX super just feels so good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the best remakes out there! Fixes up some of the outdated aspects while keeping everything that made the original great, all the while adding a good amount of new stuff, and here, there is a lot of that, the title system from Omnia was brought over and if there was ever a enemy you enjoyed fighting or liked the design of before, you can play as them now! Soundtrack got a amazing remix for Ultimate and Co-Op has never been more fun to enjoy with friends. I look forward to whatever…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a pretty nice upgrade from the original with a lot of nice visual updates and some new mechanics. If I wasn't already busy with 20 other games I'd grind this game out just as much as I did with the original.

You don't gotta pick it up as you can always hear it in game or some youtube video but I'm grabbing it for myself and to support it. >The artstyle is from a bygone era so they look fresh in 2020 since not many current anime trend use this style anymore. The illustration modernization really helps keep this style up to date…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, it's a pretty cool game. It's not perfect, but I do really enjoy playing it. I’ve always loved beat 'em up games, and this one has a cute style that makes it stand out. It can be a bit tough at first if you don’t know what you’re doing, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes surprisingly fun and kind of relaxing in a way. I just love smashing buttons lol
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this series. So much fun. I love the fighting game as well. hope we get another one. Music is awesome. Characters are soooo cute. Big thumbs up from me. Cheers. https://youtu.be/RFCONaeqeuw

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is amazing! Super fun gameplay with anime fighting game like combo feel and movement. Great OST! Wonderful voice acting! Beautiful character animations! I love playing this on my Hit Box too! 100% recommend this for any beat em up or fighting game fans. Would've like the story to be a little longer, but with multiple characters, modes and difficulty, there is still plenty of replay value.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had the original game back in the day and I really only played it a little before not playing it further. At the time I didn't like how it forced you into lanes and it felt kinda samey from screen to screen with the overwhelming number of enemies. For whatever reason I liked it this time around. The combos and counters and different fighting game mechanics are pretty awesome and as the game goes on the enemy diversity increases and while often hack and slash oriented, it definitely has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steam deck IMO runs perfectly out of the box. The same beloved game, a fresh coat of paint, pumped up to 11. It's no secret, I love Phantom Breaker and have purchased and played every re-release and Omnia. If you're a returning fan or new to this franchise, I highly recommend picking this version up.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still Super fun, but i feel like the exp rate early game... look i did a single playthrough on hard story mode so far and i'm level 75. the game feels easier and the exp rate is super fast and i would love to see a patch to slow down the exp rate. as for co op, i haven't tried playing with my EU friend cause, well, hes asleep but well see if it holds tomorrow >:D (will edit in future) i didn't know about outrange items in previous variations but the menus are easier to traverse so maybe i…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As fun as I remember it. Only downside is that it's now impossible to level up through Arcade Mode, which you, if i remember correctly, you used to be able to do.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to play this in the PSVita. Still the same boring game, get Castle Crashers instead. It's cheaper
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a mid option for this game. A 2D fighting game/beat'em up with an arcade mode that's very short. When picking "story" only 4 of all available characters are playable which is just sad. There are multiple difficulties, sure, and the ga,eplay is fun. Fun enough at least to complete the Story with all 4 characters at least once and try 2 or 3 from arcade. It's fine and enjoyable, pretty visuals too. HOWEVER what you get for the price is not great. I will leave this review as…
