Planet Zoo is one of those games that quietly eats entire afternoons without you realizing it. You open it thinking, “I’ll just fix the habitat layout real quick,” and suddenly it’s three hours later, your zoo is making negative profit, half your animals are stressed, and you’re still having the time of your life. Planet Zoo is hands down the best zoo simulator ever made. The animals are unbelievably detailed, the environments feel alive, and the level of creativity the game allows is ridiculous. Players who liked Planet Zoo talk about highly detailed and realistic animal behaviors and habitats; those who didn't talk about complex and unintuitive building and pathing systems. Which matters more to you?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Planet Zoo received "generally positive reviews" according to review aggregator website Metacritic. It was praised for its attention to detail, graphics, heavily-researched animal behavior, robust build tools, in-depth management and economy system, and educational value regarding wildlife conservation. Drawing from Planet Coaster, the game was construed as offering players unparalleled flexibility and scope to design a zoological park unbound by creativity relative to previous zoo-based simulation games. IGN described the game as "widely satisfying" and "wowed with a huge amount of customization." Destructoid praised it as successfully capturing the spirit of Zoo Tycoon and many reviews…

3.5/5 stars. There's so much to this game, which is nice, but it's overwhelming and it takes hours and hours of gameplay to explore and figure it all out. Sometimes that's a good thing, but in this case, I found it irritating. The campaigns should work to introduce you to all the features available in the game, but they do not do much to help you learn the game beyond the tutorial. The story was nice, but the goals were similar throughout the campaigns. Given how much there is to the game, it's…

Planet Zoo is a building game disguised as a zoo management game. I am a lifelong player of Zoo Tycoon and was excited to see a worthy successor but no matter how hard I try to get into it I am disappointed. If you don't enjoy building complex structures, there is no simple way to build guest buildings. Pre-fabs are sorely lacking and the design process is extremely complex. If you primarily like architecture focus and complex builds, this is the game for you. However, there is little focus…

I have played a lot of Tycoon/City Builder/Resource Managements etc games. Like a lot, a lot. Never in my life have I experienced such an obtuse, finnicky, clunky, building system. From the way barriers are placed, to the terrain and pathing system, ever single part of the experience was absolutely miserable. Every other aspect of the game is great and I'd really like to be able to enjoy it but I just cannot. UPDATE: As seen from my playtime since the review, after 3 hours of Youtube…

They release a base game and charge money for it, but the content is empty. Want actual content? You need to buy at least 20 DLCs just to enjoy the game. On top of the base game, you have to spend at least $50 for it to feel complete and enjoyable. In my opinion, this is basically a scam. Don’t feel sorry for these kinds of companies—don’t let them take your money!

7/10 I liked the game, got it on sale for 1 dollar. It is not as casual as it looks there are a lot of elements that are unforgiving: building scenery, staff management and AI being really dumb, i had only 2 habitats and 4 mechanics still my walls broke and I had to manually assign them. The economy is unforgiving too, if you make small mistakes in the beginning you need to restart basically. On sale it costs 1 dollar so it was worth for me but if it wasnt on sale I probably wouldnt get it…

I am giving this game a negative Review, not because I think its bad, but because Frontier's greedy DLC policy which doesn't allow you to buy bundles for yourself and "complete the set" if you already own part of the bundle. Instead they want you to buy every single DLC separately. Even Paradox allows that, which is saying something. Will not buy any other game from Frontier until they change that.

I love this game, but if you're considering purchasing it, it's important that you know what it is and what it is not. If you are looking for the kind of game with heavy player-animal interaction, this is probably not the game for you. If you want to do minimal management, this may not be the game for you. If you do not like design and construction (and I mean, a LOT of design and construction), this is not for you. All that said, this is probably the best zoo simulator to ever exist. The…

Not Recommended I’ve been playing Planet Zoo for many years and already own the base game along with many DLCs. This review comes from a long-time player. The issue is not the quality of the game, but how DLC discounts and bundles are handled. After more than six years and a large number of expansions, there is still no proper way for existing players to complete their collection at a reasonable bundle discount. Practically every system in this game is frustratingly unintuitive, especially if you're like me and prefer to dive straight into Sandbox Mode. The worst cases being the fences and paths...arguably the most important things for a zoo to have, and the things that should definitely be simple to use, yet here I feel like I have no creative control over what the fences and paths are doing, so I just end up with a zoo full of practically-identical blobs. I like this game, but I like my legal rights more. Arbitration is a massive screwjob to consumers and you should be wary of any companies eager to force that and anti class action measures. Do some research on arbitration, it's very anti-consumer. All this does is continue to lower accountability for companies. Sadly, I say you should move on and avoid Frontier. I grew up on Zoo Tycoon 2, one of the best games I've ever played. Its a lot more complicated but like, I'm older now so that isn't a huge deal for me. I'm getting a hang of it and its starting to feel more and more like Zoo Tycoon 2. I'm sure as I sink more time into it I'll feel right at home playing it. I do miss having my old favorites like the Fennec Fox and the Gray Wolf and I hope they're added eventually.

What blows my mind about this is their other game, Planet Zoo really pushes that environmental issues are important. And yet here they are using a "tool" that stands heavily in opposition to that

I've never felt so annoyed by a simulation game before. The KnM controls are so inconsistent - just trying to exit out of a menu is a gamble whether it wants a right-click, a click elsewhere on the screen, or an esc key press, as an example. The building editor is god-awful. In the tutorial you are given the objective to add more species to a zoo immediately after having you setup some exhibits. Copying and pasting the exhibit buildings is effectively impossible. Took me 20mins just to select…

Planet Zoo is just a modern day version of Zoo Tycoon with so much more content. There are countless creatures, designs, architecture available, so much that its honestly staggering. There are lists of details and pictures for every animal in the game, an encyclopedic level of information provided to the player, and those details can be passed on to guests in a variety of ways. I often found myself spending hours designing each exhibit and its surroundings, creating unique geographic areas…
