What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 189 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,547 of 3,167 positive).
Many players compare it to Shadow of the Colossus, praising its boss fights and atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the survival mechanics as tedious and unnecessary. [4][5][6] Others note technical issues like clunky controls and frustrating physics. [7][8][9]

I'm sorry, but no, this game doesn't work. It clearly attempts to be a new Shadow of the Colossus mixed with Breath of the Wild, but it just isn't there. It's too obscure, too overcomplicated, too misleading, too unpolished... SotC works because it's simple: you walk and climb on foot, you ride on your horse, and you use those two different gameplay systems to climb on top of monsters. You don't really need much …

If it was just boss fights I would probably recommend the game, but it's ruined by the tedious, grindy, time-wasting survival mechanics. Weapons break after a few hits, you're constantly having to manage hunger, stamina, temperature etc. Everything you do has some sort of resource cost and it's just tiring having to keep track of it all. The world feels empty, combat is clunky, climbing barely works (sometimes …

The closest thing you'll get to Shadow of the Colossus on steam, with some survival crafting elements stapled on. Considerable jank, but a commendable effort by a developer trio. If you liked SotC I would give this a chance at a discount.

What's to say that hasn't been said? It's attempting to recapture the gameplay and atmosphere of Shadow of The Colossus, but unfortunately falls short. That doesn't mean it's a bad game by any means, but Praey for The Gods sets itself a very high bar. I enjoyed it for the most part, but the survival mechanics are unnecessary. Thankfully, you can turn them almost entirely off. I appreciate that the team tried to add …

This game is really good and reminds me a lot of the classic shadow of the colossus. its almost like a copy in the sense that theres an open world with the freedom to wander around and explore in search of items and upgrades, but the main focus is finding and fighting giant titans that each have different appearances, attack patterns and ways to approach them... the core idea is still the same for all of them, you …

65% of the 189 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Praey for the Gods. The complaint that keeps coming up: survival mechanics feel tedious and unnecessary. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The PlayStation 5 version of Prey for the Gods received "generally negative reviews", while the PC version of the game received "mixed or average reviews", according to review aggregator Metacritic. Push Square and IGN both spoke negatively about the game, appreciating its strong visual design while greatly lamenting the abundance of technical problems, irritating movement, and survival mechanics. IGN in particular cited the climbing mechanic as an issue, saying the slow movement and technical glitches made it "more irritating than fun".

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great indie game, often underrated. It’s an excellent open world, with fantastic boss and mini-boss fights. The survival aspect is also present. To fully enjoy the game, you need to play on the highest difficulty, which allows you to truly appreciate it while adding a more realistic survival element, without making combat any harder.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love Shadow of the Colossus, so I was looking forward to playing this. And for the first few bosses, I really enjoyed it. But towards the end of the game, especially the last two bosses, the overall sloppiness of the mechanics that I was able to ignore at first became really problematic. The end of the game isn't difficult or challenging, it's tedious and incredibly frustrating. On top of that, I don't understand why certain aspects of the game exist at all. Equippable clothing, equippable…

neutral · AI labelView post →There's a fine game if you can get past the awkward name. Praey for the Gods isn't shy about its influences: Shadow of the Colossus, Breath of the Wild, and a hint of a Princess Mononoke vibe, all in a Fimbulwinter sort of scenario. The catch with paying homage to some serious masterpieces is you're doomed to be constantly compared to some real heavy hitters. While I wouldn't Praey for the Gods on the same pedestal held by the games it pays homage to, it's a competent entry that is able to…

This one is more impressive than the screenshots make it look (at least for me). - [Lunacid](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1745510/Lunacid/) - I love the visual style and atmosphere of this. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It took me 3 hours to defeat the 7th boss. That's not even the last boss. Why was the 7th boss so hard? I'll tell you: -critical grapple points so dark I do not notice them -getting hit by things that i visibly dodge clear out of the way from -falling off the monster because the MC controls like a drunk with no fingers. -somehow climbing INSIDE the 3d model of the monster and getting stuck? Why WASN'T the 7th boss hard? -because it was a difficult fight. When this game is easy, it's fun.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's the type of game you play one afternoon, don't dislike your time with it. But then you go to sleep and completely forget it existed and never finish the story. It would be 6-7/10 in universe where media didn't completely break the scoring system.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL:DR: 7/10 - Frustrating frozen fun found from first fight forward until finish. For those still reading. This game is basically Shadow of The Colossus in the deep Nordth, on a mission to save the world from a never ending winter. The game is much smaller than SotC and swaps mounted travel, for a grappling hook and glider. On Legendary/Survival difficulty I did not feel like I could really take in and appreciate the world as much. I was on a mad dash to make it from one boss to the next…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another Kickstarter disappointment. Shadow of the Colossus and Breath of the Wild go together like milk and coke. Remove the stamina, the weapon durability and the inventory management then it could be alright. Going off achievements there is a huge drop off after the introductory boss so this isn’t just me. But even during the boss fights, it feels like I'm fighting the physics rather than the monsters.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I regret not heading the warnings in other reviews. Praey for the Gods has a stellar premise, but the execution falls flat. The difficulty scaling is artificial; it feels like the developers decided that making a climb take longer was the same thing as making it more difficult. There are various survival and combat mechanics included, but they feel like afterthoughts. They aren't required for boss fights or general progression, leaving you with a gameplay loop that consists of nothing but…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Happy four years, Praey For The Gods Among my favorite Indie games I played, with the Nordic setting and the designs of the Colossi. This game is inspired by SOTC while standing different from the game itself. A tribute artwork I wanted to make for this cool game
positive · AI labelView post →Not bad, but far from good. The boss fights are mostly well-designed, but the rest of the game is an ill-conceived slog. I'll take the L for being in the credits and move on. (My alpha and beta hours were not logged by Steam)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was purely a game to ride off of Shadow of the Colossus. It's sad to see that it went the way of a basic :Run around and find resources" simulator rather than an actual game. I could not recommend it in good faith.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The controls are clunky. the survival mechanics feel tacked on. The boss fights are not as inspired, and it's overall just not a fun time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/10 There seems to be a lot of potential to this game, but I cannot recommend it. I am very happy I did not pay for the game (got it as part of a bundle). The music is really great. Some of the boss fights have some cool mechanics and details. They tie a lot of tips into the world and the lore, which I think is well done. But there are so many problems... I wanted to explore the world, but there is very little reason to do so. And the world is huge, but you are often stuck in water or snow…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have mixed feelings about this game. Ultimately, I think it's a bit too rough for the asking price. The controls are bit weird, there's pretty much no story at all, you are just thrown into the world and told "Kill X boss". That's it. Crafting feels underdeveloped, and gear progression is borderline pointless. There is some exploration, which is nice, but there's kinda no point in doing it due to the lackluster progression. Music is a standout here, elevating the experience. The boss…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aside from the movement everything feels unfinished. Theres is fires you can't use for anything, including the one you can create yourself. Graphical glitches all over the place. Things just hit you when you are nearby and you can never tell why or where you would not have been hit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel this way about so many indie games. - Praey for the Gods - Obviously inspired by the classic, Shadow of the Colossus - The Upturned - A horror-comedy game with a great sense of humor - Your Spider - A great indie horror game with puzzles like Silent Hill. Plus it has an adorable spider. This is one of my favorite indie horror games. - Exanima - Looks at first like a normal dungeon crawler, but its physics-based combat controls and enemy AI make this a very unique and interesting game,…
neutral · AI labelView post →I've played a whole load of bad games in my day, but this one qualifies very high on that list. The bosses were overal pretty easy aside from the jank that is quite literally the only thing that is making this game somewhat mediocre in terms of difficulty. I have tried to give this game a chance by actually finishing it, but I was left as disappointed as I was at the start. If you can see past the jank and the several genres it's trying to be, maybe you can see something aside from a polished…

It’s an indie game that clearly idolizes Shadow of the Colossus, mixes in a dash of survival mechanics, and then drops you into a frozen, godforsaken wasteland with nothing but determination and a grappling hook. It’s ambitious, raw, and at times breathtaking — but it’s also rough around the edges in ways that can’t be ignored. The highlight, of course, is the colossal…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have mixed feelings about Praey for the Gods. While the game clearly draws inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, which is a game I adore, it struggles to justify its asking price due to a number of rough edges. --Minor Issues-- - You’re thrown in with minimal context. There’s no real story, no emotional hook, just a vague directive to go kill bosses. That might work for some, but it left the experience feeling hollow and directionless. - Boss fights are repetitive. Despite being the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who didn't get to play Shadow of the Colossus but love the idea of fighting giant monsters up and close, I loved the game! The difficulty is customizable, art style is good, fights are challenging and rewarding, world is immersive, RPG elements are just right - enough to keep you engaged, but not requiring too much grind or management. I'm enjoying it! Kudos to the devs!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Underdeveloped game with a lot of missed opportunities. Q: Would I recommend? A: Only on a heavy discount and if you're ready to get bored. [+] 1) Tight leather pants At least something to look at in this game... 2) Overall good performance There are some huge FPS drops, especially during boss fight, but overall solid native 4K 120+ FPS performance. 3) Good idea, but underdeveloped [-] 1) No in-game FPS limiter 2) Crude, unpolished 3) Big, but empty world 4) Simple survival…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically Shadow of Colossus for PC, which would be great. The boss fights are sight to behold and I enjoyed them every time. There is a big BUT though, the controls are terrible, absolutely horrible. I gave up just before the last boss fight because jumping around platforms and walls became so unbearable - the controls are clunky, you are never sure whether your grab will be registered. It is just exercise in patience, whether you can push through the bad controls or they will defeat you.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In the start I was actually really pulled in by the atmosphere and scale of the world and the bosses. Seeing that there were some treasure hunting to be done I got really optimistic as I'm usually a sucker for collectibles and earning achievements. It was disappointing to realise that the pace of which this game is running ruined my enjoyment and the whole experience. The bells did this. Boss designs are insane with nice variety and original ideas, one of which gave me actual chills when it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peoples enjoyment of this game seems be predicated on nostalgia for Shadow of the Colossus. I never played that so there's no nostalgia to get me through the "jank" or "clunky" game play, as described in many other reviews. It doesn't feel smooth to play. The world also felt very sterile. Which may be the point but isn't something that's for me these days.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was good for about 15-20 hours of frozen wasteland exploration and boss killing then I didn't have much desire to continue exploring after I beat the game. A visually striking boss-focused adventure with some memorable moments, but repetitive exploration, shallow progression systems, lack or character development / story make it a 1 and done. SPOILERS: I've done two playthroughs of this title. First one was during early release before the game was complete and then I just did a new…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a much needed game to play when there are so few of its type. Like many people have said it feels like Shadow of Colossus and that is because there aren't many games like that. This was a pretty well done attempt at it. It has a mysterious atmosphere that has nuggets of lore that can be found around but also leaves stuff up to imagination for people to theorize. The game play is pretty solid with each boss feeling unique and challenging to figure out how to defeat. I see it as a spirit…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice love letter to Shadow of the Colossus. Minimal story, plenty of exploring, mild survival play, strategic battles with the giant beasts. It can be a bit "bland" roaming the overworld as there is not a lot going on, even wild life is scarce making the survival aspect a bit difficult. Overall, A fun, well made title that I think any Shadow of the Colossus fan will enjoy in their spare time.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was really good. I had a lot of fun playing it. However, it need's a final coat of paint. There are a lot of details that are missing, especially from the cut scenes and animation. The foundation is all there, it just needs that extra finish. The main thing I love about this game is the freedom it gives to perform stunts. One moment in particular stood out to me: During the winged boss fight, I was holding onto the tip of the left wing and I was running out of stamina. I needed to…

Sadly this is the kind of game which is worth less than the sum of it's parts. Let's get the most obvious and glaring stuff out of the way first. Shadow of the Colossus is a game which came out in 2005 and is generally regarded as a classic. Laser focused design, no compromise whatsoever. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm coming in as an outsider. Didn't fund the kickstarter and never heard of this game until I searched for spiritual successors to shadow of the colossus. This game REALLY scratches that itch - it's a fun game and it was only like $8 on sale. Some of the colossi are really fun, and have really cool designs. The "survival" aspects of it feel like an afterthought - it didn't really bother me that much though. I played on the normal difficulty. You CAN explore but there's really not that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like it. But it falls flat compared to Shadow of the Colossus. There is to many indicators on what to do. It just makes the game really easy. Part of the fun of SotC was figuring out how to defeat a boss. Boss seven was decent all the rest make this game seem like its for kids. Just to easy and very short. All in all the game is okay. I wouldnt purchase this full price you can get way more value from other games. If you really think this is your thing MAYBE 75% off. neutral · AI labelView post →I hate to say it but this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful. Shadow of the Colossus is among my favorite games of all time, and it's straight up offensive to refer to this as a "spiritual successor" when it's full of tacked-on mechanics like blizzards and weapon breakage that distract from the core gameplay. On top of that, the devs blew all their good ideas on the first couple bosses and the bosses become worse and worse over time. I'm on the 5th boss and I'm on the verge of uninstalling because this is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boss fights are fun, story is meh, but my main issue with the game are the controls and combat. Controls are awful and need a major rework, sometimes there are bugs also preventing me from moving. Combat is not an essential part of the game, but they are terrible as well. Only enjoy the boss fights in terms of idea and atmosphere, but in general, I wouldn't recommend this game. If you want to buy it, it has to be a gigantic discount, and watch/read some reviews first before you do.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has been a bit of a mixed bag for me. I've enjoyed it for the most part, but it kept leaving me confused and lost, and not in a good way. The good: - Our hero has learned platforming tricks from the best. She could hang out with Lara Croft and Aloy, and not be ashamed of her skills. - Bosses are challenging but not punishing. At least, not in the difficulty settings I played on ("Normal" and "Boost"). - Health recovery is maybe TOO good? I only died once in the first two bosses,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Praey for the Gods offers a captivating survival experience set in a frostbitten world. You play as a lone hero exploring a desolate land plagued by massive, enigmatic giants. The game excels in creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere with its striking landscapes and towering foes. The core gameplay revolves around climbing, battling colossal creatures, and managing your survival needs in a harsh environment. The climbing mechanics are engaging, though they can be a bit finicky at times.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very much a Shadow of the Colossus like. I did appreciate that there was a survival and crafting aspect to the game while on your way to the titans as opposed to just essentially walking to them like in Shadow. I would say my only real complaint would be that the combat with smaller monsters could've used a bit more polishing but it was still service-able. It's been a long time since I've played Shadow of the Colossus so I don't remember if there were many puzzles during the boss fights there,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible. Controls and fights are clunky, slow and far from enjoyable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like Shadow of the Colossus and Breath of the Wild had a baby. You have the obvious comparisons to SoC from the large monster fights where you have to climb them and strike them at specific points on their bodies. But the game also is very BotW-esque with the stamina, climbing, paraglider, and inventory. While I still haven't gotten around to SoC (at the time of playing and writing this) but I think this is a really solid SoC style game. The have has these survival elements with hunger,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has a lot of potential and it's pretty well done for a team of 3. It is a bit janky with the combat and clibing the bosses so I decided to not finished the game but I had fun with it, the music is good, it runs a 60fps and I like the vibe of Shadow of the colossus and Castlevania LoS it gives. Will be looking out for the next game for sure. If you can get it in sale, it's the best deal I think for this kind of game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →one of the clunkiest games i've ever played; not sure why you'd design movement that actively hates the player.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I'm rating it positively but I will not be playing more for now I think. Shadow of the colossus is one of my favourite games so I got this, but the story beats so far are exactly the same but just not as good as a timeless classic. You start off somewhere, you climb a wall, you fight a first colossus, you show up at a sanctuary where an icon of the first colossus fades showing more remaining. A faceless and powerful voice talks to you except its not dormin its the norn sisters or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is not how I PREFER having a story told. You pick up a lot of it from items you find around the world rather than it engaging you directly. However, the mechanics are a lot of fun, and I find the setting and atmosphere inspiring. I've ended up incorporating a cold mechanic into my Dungeons and Dragons games, inspired by this game. Also the aesthetics are personally right up my alley.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine ♥♥♥♥ version of Shadow of the Colossus. Thats basically that game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →VERY Unfinished. Feels like i'm beta-testing. Modeling looks very dated, and not in stylistic way. The animations are janky, disconnected, and some are missing. Texture seams are everywhere. Game concepts were chosen to be explained at random through an ugly and blunt UI, leaving the player informed of the obvious but completely lost on other issues (A person inexperienced with video games in general would not be able to play this). Combining Zelda with Shadow of the Clossus is a cool idea,…
