Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven
Developer Square Enix, xeen Inc.
Romancing SaGa 2 is a 1993 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). Originally exclusive to Japan, a remaster was released worldwide on home consoles, mobile devices, and Windows from 2016 to 2017. The fifth entry in the SaGa series and second in the Romancing SaGa trilogy, the story follows the fate of Avalon, a nation that must fight… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,547 of 4,877 positive).
Players praise the remake for making the original's complex systems accessible while keeping its challenging core. [1][2][3] Many highlight the unique generational inheritance mechanic and non-linear exploration as standout features. [4][5][6][7] Some reviewers note the story is light and character attachment is difficult due to frequent time skips. [5][8][9]

The short of it if you get attached to your main characters and Side characters this game is not for you. the main character changes based on your choices and the game forces you to choose a new main character every time skip with a hole new roster of side characters. this was the straw that broke the camel's back for me I barely got through the game with a very small level of enjoyment because I got attached to my …

I usually bounce off JRPGs. The guided, story-on-rails, grind-until-your-numbers-win kind just aren't for me. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the opposite of all of that, and it became one of my favorite RPGs in years. The pitch: it's philosophically a CRPG (open, non-linear, systems-first, unafraid to let you make permanent mistakes) built in the shape of a classic turn-based JRPG. You go where you want …

Brilliant remake all around, which streamlines a classic JRPG of the early 16-bits era by making its convoluted systems accessible to modern players without sacrificing its challenging core identity, and a new take on the original's ambitious core mechanic revolving around playing throughout multiple generations of characters while building your empire. One my favorite JRPG experiences in recent years.

It may just be both the best and worst introduction to the series. It has never been easier to understand the multitude of systems SaGa offers, it's beatiful to look at, easy to play and get lost in the world and most of the new additions are good. It truly is what a remake is supposed to be...and yet at the same time, it doesn't portray what the rest of the franchise is. Is it really a SaGa game if I don't suffer?

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is actually a very impressive remake, when considering it exists off the back of a 30+ year old game. I had never played the original, but I'd watched longplays of it because I was interested in how faithful this game was, and it is truly a testament to Xeen that they made it align so closely. Upfront, it's important to note that this game isn't really for everyone. Story-wise, …

91% of the 179 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. The complaint that keeps coming up: some mechanics remain poorly explained in-game. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Prior to release, Romancing SaGa 2 was highly antipicated in Japan. It was consistently the most wanted title on Famitsu's list of expected releases from September 27, 1993 through November 14, 1993. The original release topped the Famitsu sales chart in December 1993. Romancing SaGa 2 went on to sell nearly 1.5 million copies as of March 2003. It is the best-selling entry in the original Romancing SaGa trilogy, followed by the original game and Romancing SaGa 3. Reception of the remaster was varied; according to review aggregate website Metacritic, the PS4 and Switch versions saw generally positive reviews, while the Xbox version saw a mixed response. I...never beat the original. 👉👈 I liked it, but could never trigger the events and guides for the game were scarce. I did like it tho. Here's hoping the remake has enough QOL. Heard many good things. As they say in Avalon: on y va!

Only suffering due to lack of great characters dev, & a final stretch end slog/final battle difficulty curb. Highly replayable.

positive · AI labelView post →I've been playing Romancing SaGa 2, and added a mage to my party to help round out my damage. I rarely have her cast any actual magic though, so she's just REALLY good at kicking people. I'm very happy about my mage who kicks people. This is nice game design.

neutral · AI labelView post →I bought this because the inheritance gimmick was exciting, but the execution of it really doesn't stick the landing in my opinion. Just for example, a lot of quests present themselves as urgent, but then I can accidentally trigger a time skip of like 180 years and not only will the quest still be available, the same person will still be alive to give it to me. The gameplay is good, don't get me wrong, but that's just not enough to keep me engaged. Your main character is hollow (even more so…

Spent two hours last night trying to defeat the final boss and then beat it in one go while eating breakfast this morning. I randomly picked up this game on sale and it has become one of my favorite RPGs I've played in the last few years.
positive · AI labelView post →This... is probably one of the most unusual JRPGs I've ever played. You play as the ruler of Avalon, an emperor or empress whose goal is to reunite a fractured empire and defeat the Seven Heroes, legendary saviors who have somehow returned as monstrous threats. The premise sounds fairly standard, but the way the game actually plays is anything but. This is a very open ended game. After the first hour and a half, you're free to explore the world with a party of 5, tackle different regions in…

positive · AI labelView post →Once again it would be nice if Steam would allow for some sort of Mixed rating or something... Game itself is fine. It's still Romancing SaGa 2, it's still one of the best open-ended jRPGs out there. However playing this version made me realize that SqEnix just doesn't know how to make anything new that would be even close to the quality OG RS2. Instead they just put new coat of paint on their old games, add a few bells and whistles and some quality of life features and pray it's not gonna…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't finish this game because it's just not for me. But I do recommend it because it is a solid JRPG and I recognize its merits. The combat system is engaging and the generational story is an interesting idea. There are no bugs I encountered while playing and no instability. Something about it just didn't hook me in. I think its because I like RPGs with a tight party of characters that I can get to know over the course of the story. This game doesn't have that. Instead there are time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been bouncing off of the SaGa series for decades -- I had a fondness for Final Fantasy Legend 2 back in the day, but the others in the series that I'd played made no sense to me. Saga Frontier 1 felt too random and chaotic in terms of character growth, Frontier 2 never coalesced into a combat system that made sense, Minstrel Song seemed utterly aimless, and Unlimited Saga was, you know, incomprehensible. I appreciated the general sentiment of "you can go anywhere and Write Your Own Story"…

positive · AI labelView post →7/10 TLDR: No story, gameplay is fun with a bit of complexity in team building but it loses novelty on second playthrough as you can properly abuse a united attack system and eliminate bosses pretty quick. Doesn’t really get difficult until the post game boss, but even then it’s still abuse united attacks. I would recommend it full price if you’re looking for a fun game to go through NG+ on and spend about 100 hours on it - get it on discount if you don’t really care about the NG+ and want…

Difficult but not too difficult, the curve felt natural and by the end I felt a lot stronger than the enemies the game threw at me despite how easy it was for them to get a good hit in and disrupt my strategy. Story was acceptable, lore behind the Seven Heroes was interesting enough to keep my attention but nothing groundbreaking or noteworthy. The real stars are the different classes you unlock, each one…

neutral · AI labelView post →A lot like Octopath Traveller, from the few hours I played that game at least. Turn-based combat. Enemies have weaknesses to weapon types, and elemental magic. Every character in your party of 5 can have 2 weapons of your choosing (although you are heavily encouraged to equip weapons that fit their stats well). Hitting a weakness does extra damage, and builds a super meter. When the meter is full, you can do a combo attack with two characters at once, both multiplying the damage, and allowing…
