What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (1,713 of 2,465 positive).
Players praise the unique turn-based combat and satisfying gameplay. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the clunky controls and unresolved bugs. [4][5][6] Some recommend buying on sale due to short length and lack of polish. [7][8][9]

Its like Gunpoint (remember that game?), but far more frustrating. It tries to be a turn based combat game, but every single fight consists of jumping up and down until the guys with guns stop to reload. Controls are awful, half of the time the character jumps or grapples something you didn't want. Once you start a jump, you have to press the right analog to cancel it, instead of ANY of the unused buttons. Sometimes …

Cool concept, terrible execution. Clumsy and inconsistent controls. Known bugs unfixed after a decade. Doesn't work at high resolution, no resolution controls in options - just windowed or full screen. For it to be playable at all I have to play in a tiny window that takes up 1/6 of my screen. There's forum posts complaining about this dated to 2016. Gameplay is sorta turn based, and accurate movement is critical. …

This game is ridiculously fun. I replay it periodically because it's just that good, and I keep checking back on the developer here on Steam to see if he's put out a new game. It's been ten years since this was put on Steam (at the time of this writing), and I'm still hoping for more games like this. Just a great game.

Mark of the Ninja meets Gunpoint. If the controls were tightened up (often you jump or grapple when you mean to attack, wasting your turn and getting you killed), if the game was longer, and if it didn't have the absurd difficulty spike on the second to last boss, I'd say this is an underrated classic. As it stands however, it's simply a cool idea executed in a somewhat mediocre way. Every day I wish Steam would add …

Quick! Slash that guy! PAUSE... Oh, uh... Slash THAT guy! PAUSE... Okay... Ronin instantly reminded me of Mark of the Ninja, but the gameplay couldn't be more different. It's a side-scrolling action platformer with a turn-based twist. Not something you see very often... if ever. The art style isn't the greatest, but it fits the game well enough. The gameplay is what kept me coming back, with each encounter feeling …

Players who liked RONIN talk about unique turn-based combat that feels like a tactical puzzle; those who didn't talk about clunky and inconsistent controls. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The PC and PlayStation 4 versions received "mixed or average reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Reviewers praised the PC version's overall design concept and the alikeness with Gunpoint. Though, people still differentiated them, where Phil Savage of PC Gamer stated that Ronin is "the schlocky B-movie to Gunpoint's more cerebral stealth-puzzling". Something that was not as well received was the repetitiveness of some levels, as Matt Porter of Hooked Gamers wrote: "Each of the five people you have to kill are in the same type of boring office building." Ronin's lowest review rating was given by Steven Bogos of The Escapist, who said, "Ronin is a remarkably…

positive · AI labelView post →The look and idea behind this game is good but the inconsistent controls destroy it. This kind of game needs precise controls and not the clunky mess that we got in this game. My rating 5/10, not recommended.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As others have said, this is an incredibly polished and good looking short game that feels like a chore to play due to poor UI, imprecise implementation of core combat mechanics that _require precision from the player_, and the generally unsatisfying feel of the movement that the game is based around enjoying. On a positive note, the art direction and music are fantastic. They remind me a lot of the cell-shaded Newgrounds-era art style that a lot of indie games in the 2000s used, and it's…
