Sacred Gold

ActionRPG

Developer Studio II

Sacred is a 2004 action role-playing game developed by the German company Ascaron and published by Take 2 Interactive. It is set on the magical continent of Ancaria, with characters of various races (dark elf, vampiress, dwarf, etc.) each with their own missions. Two expansion packs were released for the game in 2004 and 2005. In 2008, Linux Game Publishing announced that they would port the game to the Linux… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I can only recommend the game who have the will to tinker with the game for an hour so it runs on new systems. If you don't, buy the GOG version, that just works. I love STEAM but it is sad they are willing to sell you games that won't start.

An anomaly of ARPG gaming that has been forgotten and buried. This game world is absurd, massive, filled with lore and easter eggs. 83% of the 166 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Sacred Gold. The complaint that keeps coming up: technical issues on modern systems. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Sacred garnered average to good reviews from the media. 1up called it "Diablo for masochists", while IGN called it "A diamond in the rough". The editors of PC Gamer US presented Sacred with their "Best Roleplaying Game 2004" award. Greg Vederman of the magazine wrote that it "provides the loot addict with a deliciously strong dose of the good stuff." Sacred was an immediate hit in the German market, where it opened as the top-selling full-price computer game of February 2004, according to Media Control. It remained in fourth place on the charts by April. Early that month, the game received a "Gold" certification from the Verband der Unterhaltungssoftware Deutschland (VUD), for sales of at…

An old classic, a Diablo clone from 2004 that is surprisingly fast paced with relatively minimal jank. With eight different characters to select, each with their own selection of Combat Arts and personality (get used to those voice quips!), and two long campaigns to go through, if a little repetitive due to being a hack 'n slash - short bursts recommended - set in a massive open world with a ton of different nooks and crannies to explore, and a bunch of random go there fetch / kill this type of…

Originally released in 2004, Sacred’s main innovation, brought to an ARPG genre freshly coalescing in the wake of genre godfather Diablo 2, was to completely eschew the typical procedurally generated maps and a strict act structure in favour of a large open world and MMO-style sidequests o’plenty. And while this is undoubtedly a unique approach for the genre, the game consequently suffers the exact same pitfalls as every other open world game: namely, the world is barren and mostly devoid of…

Is a great game still one the best even in 2026, and it is so much better than Sacred 2. However It took me forever to get Sacred Gold to work without any mods, but all you have to do is open the Scared Gold "Config.exe" and select in there Video Compatibility Mode, unless you want to play the game in true Fullscreen then you will need the PureHD Mod.

I have played this game since I was a little boy. I have always absolutely loved it. I used to play with my family for game night, I love jumping in after all these years and playing for hours still. Brings back so many memories, and is so good to chill and grind loosing track of time. Even though it's um..... well quite old at this point, it still holds up and is 100% worth playing today. Just keep in mind its not a 2026 game, and I think that's part of why I love it so much.

Diablo made the genre famous. Titan Quest and Grim Dawn kept it alive on borrowed engines and borrowed lore. Sacred did the one thing none of them ever quite nailed: it holds up. Distinct armor sets, a genuine "you leveled up" visual payoff, damage types with clear tells on how to counter them, followers and pets with actual dedicated heal shortcuts, and a backpack big enough to function like an inventory instead of a math problem. Small things, but things nobody after it bothered replicating…

Played this after hundreds of hours on Sacred 2 and was not disappointed at all! Some features are actually better-handled than the second chapter, and some others are entirely missing, which makes the two games different enough to be enjoyed separately but still clearly part of the same universe. There are some obvious graphic and gameplay features typical of the time of development that can be not for everyone, but I did appreciated them immensely. Without a doubt a 10/10 game.

I liked a blend of story and combat. If a game is going to over one or the other, IMO, it's has to be very good at one or the other and unfortunately, I feel like Sacred Gold is one of those games that fails at that. It's a beautiful world and there's a lot there and yet there isn't? There's a ton of quests in the game and a lot of places to go, but it just feels all pointless. Most of what's there is in the journal and even that's brief. The world is simply just too massive for it's own…

Only worth buying if you: A) grew up with it and want the nostalgia B) want to say you tried it This game is a slow, crude, monotonous, slog. There's barely any feeling of progression, and the story may as well not exist. I cannot recommend the experience on any grounds. From the endless respawning of hundreds of fodder enemies. The random nature of abilitity upgrades/unlocks. The instability on modern systems. The game is just a misery to play today.

I like playing Sacred Gold, it's a fun action, hack and slash RPG game. Athough, it took a little adjustment to get it to work, which is understandable since it's a game that came out in 2004/2005. There exists a breed of game so profoundly antagonistic toward the player’s time, patience, and basic sense of coherence that one must wonder whether its developers were driven not by the ambition to entertain, but by the unholy urge to create a digital torture device masquerading as an action RPG. *Sacred Gold* is not merely such a game—it is the very codex of such games. It is the barbed wire-wrapped love letter to every broken design choice ever sanctified by the genre’s darkest instincts.…

11/10 isometric rpg of the olden days. I must have clocked around 20,000 hours of this on a CD version, back before steam was really around. Very fun, different classes offer an extremely varied way to play the game and each have their own back-story and reactions to different parts/characters of the world. Gold comes with the DLC Underworld campaign which follows the events of the main story.

A fun little classic hack-and-slash RPG, this title is alright for a single playthrough. The opening area helps you acclimatise to the gameplay, but after that its just a case of constant fighting beyond, and exploring, with little means to track down the path towards the main story of the game. Reasonable, but personally I would buy it only if you're interested it.

Sacred is a classic old-school RPG that offers a lot of content and depth, but it also shows its age in several areas. The first hours can be frustrating, as the game does not explain its systems very well. Combat, skills, and character builds take time to understand, which may discourage new players. Once you get past the learning curve, however, the game becomes very enjoyable. The RPG mechanics are deep, the world is large, and there is a strong sense of progression. The story is solid…
