What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 101 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (94 of 136 positive).
Players find Second Sun a fun but flawed looter shooter with janky movement and gunplay. [1][2][3] Some reviewers appreciate its straightforward, relaxing gameplay loop and loot system. [4][5][6] Others criticize repetitive enemies, poor enemy AI, and technical issues like frame stutters. [7][8][9]

The concept is decent. I didn't find the movement that bad but many other reviews seemed to dislike it. Personally, Second Sun feels like a good gameplay concept but instead of actually designing a well-crafted world and loot, instead random generation was used so everything has this veneer of genericism applied that random generation always results in. Every dungeon is unique!... A unique series of mostly dead-end …

Look I do not want to give this game a bad review, HOWEVER there is stuff here that just broke my brain. First, I did play the demo and thought, oh hey this game might be fun. but one persistent bug/urk/issue that kept popping up ruined any joy I had with the game. So lets talk about Jars Jars are a staple of random loot and money containers in video games. So Jars in this game have ammo and money, but there is a …

Look, this is not a good game, but in my opinion it is a "fun bad game". The movement is a##, the gunplay is terrible, the game looks bad and runs even worse than it looks. Recommended, but tentatively. Second Sun is a decent looter shooter with a number of issues holding it back from its full potential. Pros/cons: + Core gameplay feels very good. + Sound design, especially on the guns, is top notch. + Open world looks nice, if a bit cheap. + Loot system, while standard Diablo fare, is well-implemented. - Enemy animations aren't good and frequently look silly and unnaturally sped up. - …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game doesn't seem to appeal to the hyper ADHD "git gud" elitist nitpicking spot farms that infest modern gaming, and that's fine by me as I am older and I enjoy it. Relaxing game loop, non-frustrating quests and simple character building that doesn't require a PHD to grasp, well implemented quick travel system, a map that makes sense and isn't 8 layers of 3d complexity that seems deigned to bamboozle. No smartarse game mechanic hyper complexity or information overload, the quests are not…

The table lost track of where it was in my deck and their efforts to mill it was ONE card off. 😬 #WOTCStaff
neutral · AI labelView post →Second Sun likens itself to various hack & slash games such as Diablo (though Hellgate: London is probably more apt for comparison) - randomized loot, (semi) randomized dungeons, hordes of enemies for you to chop up, burn, or blast... unfortunately, it's an underwhelming, mediocre experience. I personally don't care about story, so I don't find it relevant here - fine, you're an elite warrior, now go kill something, soldier. Ok, that's cool. As long as I spend a lot more time in the meat of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Among the oversaturated ARPG genre, it’s hard to cook something new that doesn’t have a too familiar aftertaste; the devs of Second Sun tried nonetheless, which is commendable, but the result is anything but spectacular. The very few redeeming qualities it might have are completely bludgeoned by the tremendous amount of technical issues, design oversight and lackluster QA it undoubtedly went through. It might be an Indie-level production, and setting our expectations bar too high would be…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What would happen if OG Oblivion, Diablo 2, Doom and Blood 2 had a test tube baby? You would totally get Second Sun. Early 00's janky gunplay - Check Slightly Dated Graphics that still look good - Check (a deliberate move by the devs by the way) Mostly Open World Roaming with Hill's separating access - Check Puzzles, Keys and Horde Spawns - Check Randomised Equipment Drops and Identification kits - Check The most basic of RPG Elements and a couple of Classes - Check No Scopes or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is like a low-budget diablo/borderlands meets doom, in a setting reminiscent of elder scrolls, with a bit of overlookable jank and a very fun gameplay loop. White it's not the most polished, I get the impression a lot of love was put into it, and I think it has a lot of charm. The world is interesting to explore, with neat little secrets scattered around, and it has satisfying combat and loot. It runs very well on handhelds, including steam deck, and it does have controller…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game. But it's probably a 4 out of 10. Second Sun is a basic looter shooter, with some levels, skills, and level up benefits. I really don't want to call this an RPG in any way. You are placed in one large valley, in a tiny military fort. The game drops an interesting lore bomb about there having been an advanced empire, but it lies in ruin due to a cult of the second sun. The second sun is blackish sun that has gradually grown in power over the years as the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's ugly and tasty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to recommend this game, I really did...but I can't. The game becomes very stale and repetitive fairly quickly. Everything about the game just feels somewhat lackluster. There is the most barebones story that never really seems to progress or develop in any meaningful way. The character creator is so barebones it's almost pointless. The RPG/skill progression system is pretty minimalistic with nothing in the way of skills or abilities that ever feel like anything but standard type…

Before i start, i wanna say this game is sick Also want to mention, once the campaign is complete, there is a infinite replay ability factor i was un aware of call the infinity tower inside of infinity valley. You can do loads of dungeons for high tier loot, high risk high reward vibe. very nice touch, because by the end i was almost disappointed, then this pulled me back in. Campaign is complete. 6/10 story (pretty interesting story but also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Environmental visuals are good. and the store page video really sells the game well. BUT damn guys, the Enemy intelligence really ruined this game for me. I just find myself being bombarded with hoards of the same enemies over that just chase you in a linear path with linear movement, you end up running backwards the whole time. Trying to strafe/dash around feels very meh, as the enemies just don't have much depth to them. you would expect different states, perhaps a melee enemy trying to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really, really wanted to like this and give a good review, but that would be misleading. The game is... OK. The graphics, are OK, the story is OK, the loot system is OK, but, unfortunately the skill system is clearly an afterthought and damn near meaningless. The guns all work the same except for the 5 different skins having different ammo capacity, and different rate of fire. There are maybe a dozen or so different monsters but you typically get the same 6 over and over again. There is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is really cool in concept, but there's some QoL issues across the board that I think the devs should consider improving on. First off is general visibility. Everything has this same earthy color palette, making it really difficult to discern what is just environment vs what is and enemy, or what you can interact with at a glance. This is particularly bad when it comes to encountering enemies that look like tree stumps in the middle of a forest. Now enemies do appear on your…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super repetitive with basically three enemies, endless waves of enemies to shoot without much in the way of level design or quest design, this just feels very shallow and boring in the end. I did not enjoy my time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately I cannot recommend the game in its current state. Literally the first "dungeon" I went into I had to redo because the monster/boss didn't spawn. There doesn't appear to be a huge variety of guns - you have the different types on guns (Assault Rifles, Shotguns, LMG etc) but the only variance between each type is the gun model and the magazine size, each variance of assault rifle, shotgun etc all sound and feel exactly the same. A game like this lives or dies on its gunplay and…

neutral · AI labelView post →the world looks bland. difficulty scaling ramps up to fast and the bad frame pacing doesn't help. but it gets loot right which is something looter shooters rarely do. You feel like there are constantly upgrades dropping and even in the early game you see stats to be thinking about. honestly while the game needs some technical help its wonderful outside of that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some real wild games on @thattcgguy.bsky.social’s stream tonight. I managed to win both games with alternate win cons. Triskaidekaphile in Game 1 and Approach of the Second Sun in game 2. Approach was the only way I could win game 2 against turbo fog despite having nearly 100 power on board
neutral · AI labelView post →There are the bones of a decent game here, but the whole package falls short constantly. Story? A semi-functional Warhammer 40,000 knockoff. The Emperor's in a coma, daemon cults are running amok, the standing army is barely holding things together, and 90% of the people you interact with in the sadsack world are already dead or will be by the time you're done talking with them. Such is life on Volg. Design? A nebulous (thing)Punk aesthetic from somewhere between World War 1 and 2, that…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played almost 15 hours thus far and I'm having lots of fun with the game, It's basically a dungeon crawler with guns. The only issue I have with the game is that the human enemies hit way too hard and they need a slight nerf in my opinion. I will continue playing it and most likely finish the campaign since I'm enjoying the game so much. Please also note that the game does offer controller support. I have been using an Xbox controller since day one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother with it right now, nothing is working as intended. Half the quests are busted and are unable to progress. Even the main story quest boss is not even spawning for me lol, so I'm stuck with progressing, falling through the map in certain areas. Every gun feels and sounds the same, legendary guns/armor do not really change your gameplay in the slightest, with zero impact. There is an abundance of ammo and health, so there is no real threat at all from any enemy. The difficulty is just…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun! Janky! Crunchy weapons! Cool aesthetic! Maximum indie! Not Destiny 2 or BL4! Loot! Needs some work, but the foundation is solid! I hope the devs will keep at it because this could turn into something very special with some time in the oven!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oblivion Remastered with Guns. Teenage dream of an old man. 10/10 Really excellent open world fantasy shooter; small responsive team to questions/update requests. Worth full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great little looter shooter with plenty of loot options to build around. Needs more enemy types and better variety in dungeon layouts/tile types. A great start and hope they keep going fleshing it out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I played for a while, thinking that I've found a good magical looter-shooter, but actually I didn't have fun. Loot is there and it's fine. But world is empty and lifeless. There are only a few monster types, that are repeated again and again. Dungeons are random, but you actually see, that they are assembled from a few pieces only and there is no need to visit any next ones after you've seen one. Shooting is fine, but a skill tree for devoter (mage type) doesn't look good to me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game isn't really bad, but it's not really good either. The gameplay feels really uninspired with a bare bones skill tree and very basic gunplay. It's like a first person Diablo 1 but without any of the atmosphere or charm of Diablo or the improvements brought by 2. The equipment and inventory system feel more like a hassle to deal with than anything and the open world doesn't really add anything other than time running between locations. The dungeons are also very basic and don't bring…

This is absolutely a sleeper hit that people are going to skip on because it was stealth launched with zero publicity. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its got the potential to be pretty fun, but i sadly requested a refund after a week of no reply (both on steam discussion and discord) to my report on a game breaking bug that can cause any dungeon generated when making a character to have a never spawning boss (and in the case i found this bug.. the tutorial... which permanently locked that character out of the rest of the game) i was also sorely disappointed in mercenaries who have lemming mentality.. as soon as i hired one it ran off into…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cons: #1. No difficulty info. You aren't told ANYTHING regarding what the difference is between easy, normal, hard, etc. #2. No info on the classes. They don't tell you that only the ranger can use crossbows or that he has 50% more hp than the Diviner, or that only the Diviner is capable of using staves, and you're not given ANY info on the different skills that are exclusive to each class. You literally have to create a new character with each class and go through the intro and then open the…

Like this one. I always loved loot-based games, since Diablo 1 back in Neolithic. In time I realized the looter shooters are even more fun, so I kept an eye out for any looter shooter coming out. I played many, some were great, some decent, some not so much. Second Sun is one of the better ones, even in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it, it's nice relaxing game and I played until now to level 20 Sentinel. I have sometimes a Deja Vu feeling from other games, but not in a bad way. For under 20 Euro you can get much worse games. But some things could be changed: 1. The destruction og items. I can smash the vases, but why not the boxes and many other items? 2. The Dungeons feel a little empty. Could be more in it and maybe a little jumpscare from an enemy or some traps 3. The soldiers at higher level are way…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game should not be in 1.0 with the amount of bugs it has. It's barely a minimal viable product. Quests are soft-locked if you interact with NPCs in the wrong order. Weapons have a fixed set of skins and pretty much fire the same way. Too much screen shake with no way to disable it. The overall game is too dark with no brightness slider. Dungeons are procedurally generated with the same few set of tiles. As you level up, so do the enemies and the game gets more difficult, so there is no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Guns. Enemies come at you. Shoot them. Do it again. One skip-able cut-scene so far. Very little dialogue. Some resource grind. It's not pretty, the enemies are from 1995 and the abilities are borderline useless. No gimmick weapons. No life stories from fairy queens. 90's game that isn't on rails set in a modern game engine. So the performance is terrible. I love all of it. I bought it late last night and stayed up way past bedtime. Oops.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing so far! - All the right ingredients to make a very fun game with very little to get in the way of that. Simply straight to the fun. It's a classic FPS with RPG elements and I'm having a blast so far. Most of all the combat is fun. 10/10 for the price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels like doom / painkiller / serious sam. Fun so far, havent played long but enjoyed it enough to recommend. Skill tree is easy to understand, gunplay feels good, spells are strong as diviner, ill have to start a character for each of the 3 classes available. Run around, jump around, shoot scoot and loot, its a hoot! The only con for me is the soundtrack is a bit soft so far. Doesnt feel metal enough or hardcore enough. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →High potential with some huge flaws. The setting is awesome along with the combat idea of blending gunplay and magic. But enemy autoleveling ruins the whole excitement of leveling up and progression. The enemy behaviour suggests the use of a dash, but there is none in the game, so instead of creating various tactics which would be possible with the dash move, there's only one - keep distance and shoot. There are some artistic flaws as well. For instance, adding fade ins and outs when the scene…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyable, and has a lot of potential to build upon the solid base that has been released. Variety is missing, gun play is great, there are some glitches and quality of life changes certainly needed, but I do honestly believe this already fun game could become something much bigger. To me it feels somewhat like Serious Sam, at least in the brainless (I do not mean this in a bad way, it is a compliment) shoot shoot go here shoot shoot loot loot way that sometimes is just what you may need to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, not bad for the 20% discount, roughly $16. Some improvement ideas: - The options menu could be put together better (they look amateurish right now). - The loot definitions and labels could use larger lettering or words. - Loot and pickup items could "glow" a bit brighter for better visibility. - The gun sounds are ok, but sound like a bouncing ball in a barrel. - The explosions sound muffled and weak. - The overall game environment color is a bit bland, dark, and washed out (I…
