What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 245 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (5,918 of 7,916 positive).
Players enjoy the game's setting and building mechanics, but many cite performance issues and repetitive gameplay. [1][2][3] Some reviewers compare it unfavorably to Medieval Dynasty, noting missing features and poor optimization. [4][5][6] A few players report game-breaking bugs and crashes that make late-game unplayable. [7][8][9]

If you bought this game because you loved Medieval Dynasty you are not gonna like this game. If you never played MD you are probably going to like Sengoku. I have mixed feelings about it, because how do you make a game like MD and then instead of making it better you make it worse. I was happy to pay for a medieval dynasty with a Japanese skin but it's more of a temu MD. Things that are different/better are being …

Gosh as someone who rarely writes negative reviews, I just wouldn't recommend Sengoku Dynasty to anyone, especially if your coming from Medieval Dynasty. Before I discuss my complaints, I would like to say after reading through other users negative reviews I noticed there are some serious die hard fans who refuse to hear criticism of this game. It gets to the point they just resort to insulting people and making …

My Sengoku Dynasty Review I went into Sengoku Dynasty expecting a relaxing survival-builder set in feudal Japan, and for the most part, that’s exactly what I got. It’s a game I liked—sometimes a lot—but also one that slowly wore me down the longer I played. It never really crashes or burns, it just kind of… plateaus. What you see in the first several hours is almost exactly what you’ll be doing for the rest of the …

Unplayable after some progress.. I love the game and played it for hours and days.. but after every building and villiger you can see the Performance Drop with everything you build or recute. I played with my setting and go to low setting but nothing changed.. i had just 18 fps at the end.. I really like the game but its not playable anymore like this.

60 of 302 · most liked firstThis is a tough review. I thoroughly enjoyed my 60 hours of playtime but I have to stop playing due to extreme lag near late game - I've literally decided to stop playing and write this review. This is disappointing enough to discourage ppl from buying it at this point since you may not be able to comfortably reach end game with current performance issues. That said, here's my general overview: Pros: - If you like Medieval Dynasty you’ll like this as well - there is a lot of gameplay to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sengoku Dynasty literally changed my life. I was playing it in late 2023/early 2024 and realised I wanted IRL to do all these things; living off the land, growing food, exploring, etc. So then I proceeded to do just that. I went to Japan on an extended working holiday visa, and among other things went to go live with people who were living in a small remote river valley. I got to plant vegetables and rice, watch it grow, harvest it, dry it, thresh and winnow it and eventually eat it. Got to see…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me start by saying I love this game, but I am sad to rate it this way. The crashes and Fatal Errors are really starting to get to me. I can't go 10 minutes without my game locking up. Otherwise this game is very addicting. I genuinely want it to do well. Please fix whatever is causing this issue. Thank you. <3
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sengoku Dynasty has improved with time, but still need a little more. The gameflow is as follows: A player encounters a refugee and engages in a conversation. All refugees have specializations. A choice is made if the refugee is suitable to join the village. If refugee joins: The refugee is assigned a bed, and a position of work. otherwise, the refugee is ignored. Refugees have up to eight needs to be met which unlock based on population. If needs are not met, villagers will…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You know why I am going to downvote this game. Theirs too much clutter and nothing I can pick up. Walking up to bandit huts, stalls or even peoples houses. Seeing handfuls of items, meats, necklaces, weapons. None of which I can interact with. Instead I'm forced to find a chest hidden in the dirt, that has 2 useless or barely useful items. I'm okay with this being a simpler version of Medieval Dynasty. But the lack of being able to interact with the world besides with what I build is wild. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At current state, I cannot recommend this game. It has a lot of potential with the setting in Japan but constantly feel like an early access product. Beds that costs different resource but purely cosmetic that has no mention of any effect, wolves that walks among the refugee without interacting with them, the enemy AIs feels like too simple: enemies run to you to some range then stop and run back and you just keep shooting them in the back. This lists can go on. I do hope they can continue to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seem great until the seasons change and you realize you have to manually micromanage foraging and farming because there's no way to plan it out by season, a feature Medieval Dynasty has but Sengoku Dynasty lacks. It's so stupid that this feature wasn't in the game at launch, and it will always be a black mark against the developer and the publisher if it never gets patched in. It should have been patched in months ago. This is a feature that worked fine in the first game they know how to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried playing this a dozen times now with other people. Now I've even tried doing coop on LAN. New game, no buildings or complex villages, and the rubber banding makes it impossible. We're hardwired and have way better machines than required, and my wife rubberbands a dozen yards to either side including off of cliffs and into the ocean. It's just entirely unplayable. Single player runs fine, but the co-op/networking is absolute garbage.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I think I got my money's worth, this game suffers from very poor optimization. At around 30 villagers I start hitting constant stuttering as the game waits for a single thread to constantly calculate villager pathing. This happens regardless of where you are on the map and isn't even based on PC limitations (my CPU is at 14%, GPU at 14%, RAM at 45%). These stutters get so bad it even causes the hostile AI mobs you fight to stop pathing properly or even freezing in place. The multiplayer…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've enjoyed this laid-back building sim with light survival elements and plenty of combat. It’s quite good for a long while, but as you move into the later mid and end game, quality-of-life issues start to become more apparent. Because of those problems, it isn’t something I can keep playing or see myself replaying. That said, I still got more than 80 hours of great fun out of it. The game looks and sounds good and generally runs well. Combat isn’t deep, but it’s serviceable, and learning…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to give this game a middling review, but alas Steam only allows for either a yes or a no recommendation. It can be pretty, but the game itself is quite shallow. Grindy, in an almost zen-like fashion -- so long as you avoid the combat. The game loop's simple; gather resources, build things, recruit people, rinse and repeat. Which would be fine if not for the flaws in the other half of the game: combat. The fighting itself is incredibly frustrating. You have enemies that instantly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think it's a great game, until you start getting further into it. The lag is terrible once you've started developing your village. The villagers doing task and moving creates lag, but in order to really progress the game, you need villagers to do villager only buildings. The entire world feels fully loaded, and not chunked in active spots. I can see fires burning on the other of an island, and when it snows.... I tried it with minimal graphics in the video, and it does not have enough…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as much as I enjoy this game, there's a few things that make the experience a bit less enjoyable 1 - health regens too slow (I have to sit and wait between enemies and work on something else while my health returns.) if health items didn't expire, this wouldn't be too bad. 2 - combat is a little clunky at times (the best experience I have had with a weapon is the naginata) some weapons just don't work how you think they would and the block/parry mechanic just doesn't really work. 3 - seasons…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: We just got an 1.2 update and it addresses few of my concerns out of the bat and expands on the game. This gives me a lot of hope the game will get better with time. If you like this type of games I think it is very much worth trying out. Game is fine. Some systems are overly complicated and confusing for no reason. It is hard to figure out optimized way to do things, but overall it is ok. Skills are super important and it is not properly communicated or intuitive. Menus could be a bit…

This game is still good when you want MD in an Asian setting with more vibrating colours and more comfort. So now im on my way to make my last playtrough (number 7) to try the last 2 beauty spots and about 250 hours in. i payed about 10 cents per hour making this a very good buy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy this game. Group of friends bought it planning for COOP sessions back on release. We've attempted multiple runs over the years without any progression because the network code for this game is terrible. Lag makes the game unplayable multiplayer, especially because of how combat is so fast paced. This is still not fixed. I ended up playing a full solo campaign because I bought the game and wanted to experience it, and was let down incredibly. Village Management and UI: Do you…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sengoku Dynasty started as a great game with lots to do. Then they added the latest update with upgrade of the Bell Tower and if that doesn't work the entire game fails. It may work on Windows but it does not upgrade in Linux even though they state they are certified for the Steam Machine. (Steam Machine is Linux if you don't know) So on Linux when I try to update the Bell Tower it goes through the action but fails to actually update. This ends the game for me after there are 3 people in…

Fortunately there's no desync but... the problem are weirder... (and random...) and here is the list of all we encountered in ~12H of gameplay.. : - Ennemies & animals simply ignoring the players... - Some graphics just don't load - Dynasty ressources management not updating correctly - Some Player skills not having effect (Stone axe no skills : 7 hits... stone axe maxed all axe skills…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the game a lot, the only thing that makes me want to stop playing it forever is the god awful Dynasty management UI. IT WOULD BE SO EASY TO FIX, SO DO IT. LET US SORT BY JOBS AND SORT PEOPLE BY WHICH VILLAGE THEY LIVE IN.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is worth keeping in mind most 'X dynasty' games are made by different developers, same publisher, so they can have very different qualities despite sharing a theme. This one is, at time of writing, (very) roughly a year into early access, and seems to be one of the better ones, where your village(s) are more related to the world at large, with political and social aspects both playing into it. It's worth giving a chance if you are interested in the setting.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let’s start with the “interesting” parts: - NPCs feel… unique. Not sure if it’s a design choice or they just woke up on the wrong side of the code. Sometimes I wake up and get stuck in bed. Truly immersive—just like real life, but less comfortable. - NPC animations can be wild. After fights, some of them forget how to be normal humans. I’ve seen faces with no eyes, no mouth… just eyebrows. Impressive, honestly. - Performance still needs work—there’s stuttering here and there. - Tried playing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game because I was a fan of Medieval Dynasty and the era this one is based in. So I figured I'd give it a shot. I liked bits of it, but I cannot recommend this game unfortunately. I had a bug where you cannot continue the story because it refuses to accept that you finished the quest when you turn it in. It acts like it does. But it does not. Now - I of course posted about it on the discussions. They told me things to fix or attempt. I tried about anything they suggested and I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like and recommend this game but I cannot in its current state. - It is not sufficiently optimized - I have played Bellwright, Medieval Dynasty, and other similar sim titles and this is the worst I've played in terms of freezes, stuttering, crashes. I cannot stream the game to Discord or Twitch without crashing my system's memory and corrupting my drive. - I want to like the combat system but the AI and systems are quite poor for both the enemy and your villagers. You do not have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like this game, as a big fan of Japan. The graphics are nice, building is decent, combat is not too difficult. Despite this, the game seems very poorly optimized. It lags too much over time and finishing daily production freezes the game. I also miss snapping objects when building or some way to better align them so I don't have to rotate the building 4-5 times .... I also miss a lot of village settings, where we could choose what exactly and especially how many villagers can use! Or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although Medieval Dynasty is the more fleshed out game this game scratches the itch more for me. It's still got a long way to go, but for where it's at you'll get your money's worth if survival village builders are your thing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spending time with Sengoku Dynasty tonight. A builder game where you're shipwrecked and have to start a new dynasty (village) and build it from scratch, then recruit refugees. Part survival too, as you have to watch your food, HP, stamina. I just love feudal Japan. I already built a small house!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game with potential, but horribly optimized. Frame rates drop to 10% randomly every few seconds. Come on devs, you got a pretty good game on your hands, just make it run right.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find this game difficult to review in that it has some very good points and some exceedingly irritating ones. Developers might want to look at the following (or let me know where theses things are that I have missed. As others have said the management of villagers is very time consuming. Silly things such as not being able to allocate more than one type of crop to a worker so that when seasons change u have to manually change the crop or they end up doing nothing for a good part of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At the current moment, this game is ultimately unplayable for me, and likely many others. The optimization is NONEXISTENT. Through turning all my video settings to low, updating my drivers, tweaking graphics settings etc., and still, stuttering every few steps, lag and low frames and it gave me a migraine to even get past the starting beach. I'm going to come back to this game when I either get a better PC, or if/when they update the optimization. This is sad.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like this game, but it falls way short. Play Medieval Dynasty instead. I got frustrated at the fact you can't rename your fast travel points, and how much work it is to place people where they belong. Whether it's in a job, or a place to sleep. The plus is the combat. Better than the other dynasty game, but that is kind of a low bar to be honest.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't in good faith recommend this even though I have enjoyed every second of it (minus the very little co-op). At current state there are far too many bugs, optimization issues, and gameplay discrepancies to make it worth a purchase. Once you get any depth into the game things start having issues, and sure thats to be expected but for a game that allows you to have multiple villages... having only one cause issues when hitting 40+ population is absurd and dont even get me started on the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In short this game is early access at best at worst it is outright lying about what it offers ie network coop issues among vast swaths of the user base. I happened to have bought it exclusively to play with friends. We eventually got it to work but it drops constantly and requires command prompt level ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around every time just to make it work. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a great game. I've really been quite enjoying it. It has some elements of Medieval Dynasty but enough variation to tell its a different game. You can build a ton of different things. Decorate up the wazoo. Everything you find in game you can also learn to craft. For the combat being an afterthought after players asked for it, its done pretty well. I love the mechanic of taking over territory yet still being able to build anywhere. The map is very well done. Having differences in biomes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ran absolutely horribly for me. Even on lowest graphics it stuttered like crazy. People will say "oh, just go change this setting or disable this or that on your computer" but no, a game shouldn't require that to run smoothly. Tutorial is just text boxes with a novel of text that pop up without pausing the game. This isn't ideal when the game is as complicated as it is. The dynasty system is a great idea but so tedious to work out. Villagers need food? Assign jobs for them to get food. Oh, but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fun when playing in coop! The devs have been constantly updating the game adding new content (new mechanics included), still polishing the basics with tins of QoL improvements. Though there is still a long way to go but I hope that they will continue!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first I was a little hesitant to dive into this game thinking it would be pretty complex...but once you've played the first few hours you notice that it's not that bad at all. I did choose a more relaxed difficulty mode and I'm convinced that there's quite the challenge to be had if you go for a higher one. All in all though, I did enjoy my time with Sengoku Dynasty. Are there still issues? Yes. Is the combat system the best I've ever played? Not at all. Is the story engaging? Barely. Are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is... a lot of things. Perhaps those things that it tries to do, ultimately makes it fade into the background rather than define itself as unique unto itself. Combat is still pretty clunky. It's unnecessarily hard sometimes, and while a little bit of planning can certainly go a long way towards successful encounters, it doesn't feel fluid. Also, what is the point of having all these villagers if you can't make some of them companions that help you in combat? Is this game so reliant…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this game for about 7 days.. here are my few comments: I’d love to see a few improvements: More customization for villagers (clothes and weapons) Add pagoda structures for historical accuracy Let villagers join as companions when attacking enemy bases A family system where villagers can pair up and have up to 2 children Add customize pond in ZEN buildings Also, there’s a bug where moving items to storage sometimes changes the quantity. Overall, I love the game and see huge potential…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game but it feels as if there needs to be more content. Once you reach the endgame (100 villagers, all enemy strongholds taken down) you run out of things to do. All I have left to do in my game is just finish the special projects and grind out combat XP. All my dynasty needs are more than taken care of. Do I view that all as a bad thing though no. It's a good game for the price and quite fun. Could it use more content and fixes? yes. Will it eventually? hopefully. The combat…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 game! (It would be 10/10, read more.) Sengoku Dynasty is a great game. The developer Superkami had an extremely ambitious vision. The game is jammed packed with a lot of content, items, variety, and gameplay options. The reason the game isn't a 10/10, is because it still lacks polish. Sengoku Dynasty has some minor, and even some major technical issues you must overcome. Honestly in the first 10 hours I heavily contemplated quitting, the bugs and technical issues are…
