[4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize the dated gameplay and lack of direction, but appreciate the effort. [7][8][9]

If you love backtracking, having absolutely no idea where to go at all times and surroundings which all look the same, then this is the game for you. Note that my review is about the actual game, not the port. The latter has been done magnificently by Night Dive.

This what a true Remaster should be. Not just updating the graphics but bringing back cut stuff that the original game developers couldn't fit in before. This is the one true expansion that everyone should seek & know no bounds when discovering the very foundation, in & out. There are many dangers at your proposal. Tread lightly. And it is also worth the price, you will not be bored.

This game man. This game. I had no idea how absolutely amazing this game would be. I went in blind just from a friend's recommendation. I have played hundreds of games and this easily goes into my top 5 of all time. The game feels great to play, the levels and the world is a joy to explore, the atmosphere and especially the soundtrack are just something out of this world and I can't get enough of it. The story and …

If, like me, you missed the original game but long for the kind of horror games they just don't make anymore, this game is a must-play. The atmosphere is outstanding, and that’s basically what carries the whole thing from beginning to end. At first, the locations may seem small, but the more you level up, the more you realize how vast and intricately designed the world really is. In terms of gameplay, it reminded me …

I didn't expect to like Shadow Man Remastered this much, I remember the original game being good, but I expected it to be very dated by now. That didn't happen. First, the remaster: this is a brilliant remaster, with many QoL features, better controls and camera, nice graphics enhancements, and HD textures that are faithful to the original but in much better quality. Nightdive deserves all the accolades once again. …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an absolute masterpiece of a game, but not without its flaws (due to its age). Imagine the tense atmosphere while exploring an abandoned underground subway in "Down Street Station" London, encountering the modern reincarnation of Jack the Ripper, only to find his private quarters deep inside the tunnels full with dead bodies hanging inside his closets. Then finding his diary... Imagine the disturbing atmosphere exploring an abondoned apartment building in "Mordant Street, Queens NY"…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unbiased review: Never heard about this game, never played this game before. Saw a new game from the Nightdive and bought it. PROPS: Probably the biggest sized world I saw in an adventure game. Can't understand how they packed so much in a game from 1999. This game will test your memory, you need to remember where u been, where to go, all the possible roads, turns, doors etc. By the end of the game I had an awesome feeling that I finally started to understand the world, how to move in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL/DR: good game music, got lost, blah blah. The store page says Shadow Man is a 3rd-person action-adventure game, but let me clear this up. That ♥♥♥♥ isn't the full truth! Shadow Man is an action-adventure and a listening to what Vincent Van Goh hears at 3AM simulator. Originally released on Nintendo 64, it was rushed out to meet a deadline, leaving about 30% of the original game cut in order to get this bad boy to console for its MASSIVE and WAITING fanbase who were so enthusiastic they…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THIS IS ONE OF THE COOLEST GAMES OF ALL TIME! I think it is a really cool game with cool world and settings and fun gameplay. It has fun levels, cool weapons and cool enemy and envirnoment designs. And it has a cool variety of different weapons that you will unlock throughout playing through the game, and you starting with the Shadow Gun pistol a cool gun which I used always throughout my playthrough and later you will unlocking more cool new weapons. And you will also unlock tools as well…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Old-school masochist style game-play. Get lost for days even with a guide. Also it's way too long, especially after the added cut-content.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is how you do a remaster properly
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nightdive studio head when Trump was pew pew'ed said that supporters deserved it too. This rhetoric is disgusting, abhorrent, and indicative of The Rot festering in far too many minds of people in our society.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not really my cup of tea. Still, I can see why people like it. It's very, *very* similar to Soul Reaver but with a much less easy to navigate overworld. It's probably pretty telling that - according to the Steam achievement stats - two thirds of all players don't even get as far as the first boss.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow what a remaster! As someone who loved the game since playing it back on Dreamcast , (see my review on the original PC version) this is everything anyone who loved the original game could want and more. Taking an already epic adventure and adding to it with three extra maps, new enemies, and other cool bonus stuff make it a must fan of the original Shadow Man game. Graphics are more colorful and richer, control is solid and it's rewarding to find all the secrets, dark souls, and new…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The remaster does a great job of putting a spit shine on this early 3D era classic. If you played it before and loved it, you still will. If you played it back on N64, Dreamcast, or PS1, and didn't like it. This probably won't change your mind.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is quite big. A lot to explore. I oftentimes got lost a bit because there are so many ways to go. But it trains the brain to better remember where you were going. The storyline is amazing and so detailed in some parts. It is what makes the game unique and special in it's own way. They seem to be working currently on a new ShadowMan game here > https://store.steampowered.com/app/1578870/Shadowman_Darque_Legacy/
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too clunky to enjoy, too cool to hate Shadow Man Remastered is a lovingly-crafted expanded remaster of an old 5th Gen cult classic, based on an even older comic book. You play as Mike LeRoi, 1998s Coolest Man, who moonlights as the Shadow Man, a voodoo-powered badass, who walks between the lands of the living and the dead. As the Shadow Man, you must explore both Deadside and Liveside to thwart the evil schemes of five undead serial killers to bring about Armageddon. The story is sparse,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an old game so be prepared for dated gameplay, but its not about that. You're playing because its a weird freaking game that gets very, very dark and disturbing. You'll have weird dreams. You might have unusual feelings in liminal spaces. Have fun!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty nice port but the game itself is fairly confusing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What can I say... If I have to tell an example of something that actually forges your life in a way it would be this game. Why? A few reasons would be that I played it as a little kid and it stuck to me hard. The atmosphere, the soundtrack, the enemies, the lore, every small bit of this game is in my heart. I recommend it for a few reasons. The game is long, addictive and is a masterpiece for the time it was released. It has you running though the same levels all over again just to find other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just sharing little thing I've been doing these last three weeks on my off time. If ya didn't know I worked on Shadow Man Remastered and I thought it'd be cool to recreate the starting area from the second game in the first game. It's a small 5 minute area with one cutscene! I love vertex colors <3
positive · AI labelView post →Great game made even better with this remaster. All it needed was an ingame map as a quality of life upgrade because you will get lost, alot. Other than that, this is a certified hood classic. 8.9/10 will play again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the demo when I was a kid and it always kind of stuck with me. Honestly the game was better than I expected. It's kind of like a dungeon crawly, metroidvania. If you can get past the jank and cheesy dialogue, I think it's worth trying. I really enjoyed it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadowman was definitely a game ahead of its time when it first released. Picked it up on the N64, and I was far too young to understand just what in the heck I was in for. Glad Nightdive Studios gave this game a proper remaster, and now I can enjoy it, and actually progress through it now that I am older. Still makes my brain hurt from time to time due to the amount of backtracking(think Soul Reaver times 50), but having a blast still playing through it. Look forward to finally completed the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best game of the 90's made even better for modern day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Underappreciated classic. Weird as ♥♥♥♥ and pretty confusing, but worth the playthrough for sure.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadow Man Remastered is, as the name says, a remastered version of the classic `99 game Shadow Man. I never played it as a child, but having experienced it now, I can say it's one of the best (and maybe one of the most overlooked) action adventures of the late 90s. It's marvelous in almost every aspect, from gameplay feel to sound to environmental design to ambience. As Shadow Man Michael LeRoi, you explore the world of the dead, Deadside, to stop Legion sending an army of souls to overtake…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This plays as it should. If I had to guess, if you happen to be looking at this, you already know the game exists and you enjoyed it way back in the day. Maybe you like the comics, which is really sick of you. Point is that if that is the case, this is the real deal and it doesn't suck. Now for the real peeps who might have found this by random chance or through boomer game searches, or you're lost in Nightdive's roster of games: This is an action adventure game. It's got a narrative focus…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything is already said here. This game is a masterpiece of exploration and atmosphere. I have played this game so much when I was a teenager and it still holds up if you ask me. The remaster is fantastic as I have come to expect from Night Dive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →incredibly fun game to spend time on. the vibes captured me immediately. the map can be confusing at first, but if you play it regularly, you should get to know it pretty quick. the platforming is fun & pretty easy to master. I loved the concept of the story, as someone who loves esoteric stuff. the writing is funny. the voice acting of Shadow Man is captivating. the world is vast and detailed, with explorable nooks and crannies. never had as much fun and pain at the same time while achievement…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the original game expanded upon, and built upon. This is everything the original tried to be yet was unable to be, due to time constraints and limitations of 90s tech. It's what every remastered game should aim to be. The absolute best job any developer could've done for such an iconic game. Job well done, Nightdive Studios.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts out fine, even a bit silly. The first level is mostly jumping. The second level is jumping and a maze with some combat. You have a roll and a pistol. I can not figure out the maze for the life of me and I think the game expects that because theyre 2 cutscenes saying to "use your eyes." With the game having that Intendo 64 look, its hard to tell what Im looking at. Some things look great like Shadow Man, some things just look awful. I followed the enemies, did a jump puzzle, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly suprised how quickly I breeze through the game after all those years The bosses that got cut from the original caught me by surprise Gameplay is very fun and smooth overall Adding the Light Soul in The Fogometers is a cool addition, so the extra 166 cadeaux have a point beyond completionism The Playrooms music is still cringe Don't listen to it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Believe me or not this is my all-time favorite game. For the first time I've played it more than 25 years ago 😂. I was stunned by the intro the graphics and overall atmosphere. This isn't a fast paced adventure. This is a very long and lonely journey.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →incredible atmosphere/ world. Only other game I've played like it is ocarina of time - was also originally on the n64 - and its a brilliant remaster from what I can tell. Had to search for a few guides sometimes during my ~24hrs playthrough when I was lost (there's no actual maps but a vague drawing in the back of a book you get/ some npc cutscenes will remind you) but I was still super enthralled. luckily i have a decent sense of direction. really recommend this
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tl;dr: Game is worth it, remaster is awesome with new content cut from the original game. DON'T PLAY THE HORROR. I don't remember exactly why I bought this game. But I'm glad I did. A 3D Third Person Metroidvania is a cool concept and I really enjoy it here as well as the story setting. Idk if I should read the comics. I think the gameplay is good and fun though there are a few complaints. First of all no map for levels. Which like, isn't a huge problem but it makes getting around tedious…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FANTASTIC old school game. Must play if you love classics. This game is up there with Deus Ex and System shock 2 (originals)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Underrated in my opinion.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Vibes are crazy. Character has great voice
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3D Adventure-action game with a Metroidvania style of progression and horrific atmosphere Please note that I haven't played the original game on any version. This review will be based on the game as is and not the Remastered parts. As the title implies, you play as Michael LeRoi aka the Shadow Man, a voodoo warrior whose main goal is to protect Liveside, the world of the living, from the Apocalypse. To do so, he must journey into Deadside, the world of the dead and gather 120 Dark Souls…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great retro game that plays very well remastered, definitely recommend for tomb raider/action lovers
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →REMINDS ME OF MY N64 HIGHSCHOOL DAYS, LONG WEEKENDS PLAYING, AND ALL THE COLOURFUL NIGHTMARES I WOULD HAVE FROM THE WONDERFULLY INSIDIOUS SOUNDTRACK!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They don't make games like this anymore. I'd describe it as voodoo tombraider/stage based metroidvania. Complaints wise well, I don't think I've ever been so lost in a games mazelike levels. Also, I wish they'd have speed up certain animations for the remaster. Things like swimming or moving across ledges. But really, the style carries this through. Such a singular vision throughout is rare these days. I didn't quite 100% it as I do most 'vanias. Finding all of the cadeuex and secrets seemed…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game as a kid, and while it shows its age such as the environments are a labyrinthine pain the rear to find your way around as well as some of the fights between characters in cutscenes looking absolutely wonky, I still had fun revisiting this classic around 25 years later.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite literally this is one of the best games i've ever played. I remember when i tried to play original digital version as a child and i didn't know "map" i got so lost that even walkthroughs didn't help me at that point so i gave up, but when remastered got released i decided to try this game again and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it is just so good. I just can't point any other game that is this atmospheric.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best single play action horror game so far!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played some PS1 games when I was little but I never tried Shadow Man until today! I was about to try the OG version until I found out about the Remastered and I'm so thankful that it exists! I've seen footage of the original version on the web and the new lighting in the remaster makes it look so much more atmospheric paired with the excellent OST of the game! I was expecting the gameplay to be kind of meh but it turned out to be quite fun! The camera works surprisingly well too, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this on sale for 3.99. I had the original version from steam, the n64, and the ps1 version. I was never terribly interested in this game. Playing this remastered version is pretty fun. I love the voodoo atmosphere of it. The mouse and keyboard controls work great on this version. My Xbox controller also work pretty well for it. I love the N64 enhanced graphics of the game. Its got a cool spooky and gross look to it. I have not played to far into this game. I don't really know the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only heard about this game from my dad and found it on steam for 3 dollars. Its easily become one of my favorite games OAT. A masterpiece hands down, even if it is old.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved it back in the day on dreamcast and it has that nostalgia factor, but having no map makes this game super rough when you get deep into it. I got around 75% through and after running around aimlessly for hour/s I stopped playing and couldn't be bothered to try and dig up ancient guides on where to go next.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent remaster, super fun game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely the definitive way to play this game. Really would have loved a map system to work off of but the objectives in the world select makes this game much easier to navigate. Grindy ass game, but that's the retro touch. Loved it, first time I played it fully through, time to go have a drink with a snake...

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shadow Man Remastered is a rare kind of revival—a game that doesn’t simply polish an old classic, but attempts to restore and elevate a piece of atmospheric, late-90s experimental design for a modern audience. Nightdive Studios, known for meticulous restoration work, took the original 1999 Acclaim Studios Teesside title and rebuilt it with contemporary rendering techniques, restored content, and enhanced controls while retaining its unmistakable identity. The result is a carefully preserved…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember seeing this game as a child, and I wasn't allowed to play it (It was rated M. It had a warning label on the box saying it included adult content, whatever that meant). Flash forward to 2025 and I learned that there was a remastered version of the game, and so I had to give it a whirl. Considering the game originally released in 1999, there's a lot of positive things here. It's definitely not a "must play" title, but there is something about it that enticed me to play it to the end.…
