Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Case of the Mummy's Curse
Developer Zojoi
The London Times started it all – calling the murders the work of an ancient Egyptian curse. I accused the tabloid of capitalizing on the superstitions of the populace. Yet, three men were dead, with the wrappings of a 4000-year old mummy binding their fates together. From the Steam store page

Players find the game a short, FMV-heavy detective experience with cheesy acting. [1][2][3] Some enjoy the interactive story and live-action clips, while others criticize the punishing scoring system. [4][5][6] The game is seen as a niche title best for fans of Sherlock Holmes or retro FMV games. [1][7][3]

A running theme through this series is that the game system is excellent and the cases fail to live up to the possibilities. It's just as true with The Mummy's Curse, though it's at least the best of a bad lot. The biggest problem with The Case of the Mummy's Curse is it becomes fairly obvious who your culprit is early on and there is one absolutely threadbare path that allows you to haul ass to the conclusion with …

Fun but I kinda hate the point system. Feels like the game is punishing me for wanting to explore it. I guess it's just a bad fit for how I like to play games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrJUCwjLk5g Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Case of the Mummy's Curse is for a certain type of video game fan. I can't claim to be one of them. Despite that I had a great time searching the newspaper for clues and watching the live action cut scenes. Something about this game's cheap production values wins me over, from the amature acting to the obvious sets. Fans of this …

This is a great remaster but also an odd relic from the days of FMV games. I owned the original on CD-ROM back in the day and seeing the game again in high(er) quality video brought a smile to my face. Now that I'm older though I realize that the scoring system is actually counter-intuitive; the lower your score (which increases with every clue you seek out, whether it's talking to a suspect/witness or talking to …

really enjoyed the FMV scenes, and found it overall very charming! but the game itself leaves a lot to be desired, very short and the solution is obvious. Check it out if you enjoy Sherlock Holmes or cheesy FMV games but i wouldn't really recommend it for anyone outside of that demographic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

neutral · AI labelView post →The idea is a combo of deduction and required evidence; My current design is inspired by a bunch of games but I really like Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective style, where it is possible to solve it in a perfect minimal number of steps/encounters/scenes but you can take longer and still solve it
neutral · AI labelView post →I will start off by saying that this game has very little to actually "do" in it, it is more of an interactive story almost, but not quite. The object of all three of the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective mysteries is to gather clues by deciding on what people and places to visit. Once you have gotten enough information to solve the crime/s you will go before a judge and he will ask a few questions that you must answer correctly. Getting to the judge and answering questions using the fewest…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are a fan of Retro games, sure this is one to add to your library, don't expect something like Night Trap or Double Switch though. I originally owned this game on Sega CD. This game is short. Given that it was originally bundled with 2 other cases when it first came out. This game is alot better than I expected it to be given that I played the original version, either concerning video or the interface itself I came in expecting my experience on Sega CD and was suprised that it was…

neutral · AI labelView post →two recommendations from me: - Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective. brilliant genre-defining boardgame. somehow from the 80s?? - Her Story. originator of the modern FMV movement both just have that freedom to speculate on someone's motives, go: huh, i wonder... and have that immediately pay off

neutral · AI labelView post →I love the tabletop version of this game, but the digital version doesn't stand up except as a curiosity. The tabletop version has cool Side Quest mysteries to solve - little details that aren't related to the main murder, but give you some points for solving them. These have been removed from the digital version, but the clues relating to them are left in there! This means the game is left with a whole bunch of random plot threads that go absolutely nowhere. For example - in this case, you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Last night we finally cracked into Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective after having it on our shelf for a few years. I dig it. It's basically a choose-your-own-adventure deduction game where getting more story is dependent on you figuring out the story so far. Clever format, great time-for-cost.

There's no gamified deduction game here, there's just a case, some clues (newspaper, helpful characters from the hospital, scotland yard, and a list of places and people in london you can visit), and when you think you know what's happening and who's the culprit, you go to the judge and present your theory. Most of the interaction are presented by very cheesy short live-action clip that's really entertaining on their own, if you're…

It reminds me of the VCR interactive games of that time. They're pretty fun.
positive · AI labelView post →I talk about it from time to time, but I'm a big fan of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. Dave Neale who designed the last box (green) had a great conversation with Suzanne Goldberg, one of the co-creator of the original game.
positive · AI labelView post →8. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, by Gary Grady, Suzanne Goldberg, Jérôme Ropert - It’s really really fun to solve a mystery in this game. We have the Jack The Ripper edition because we already finished (not solved) all the cases in the Thames Murders set and gave that away to a friend.

positive · AI labelView post →No. Just no. I have hard times calling this a game, but whatever. Flaws in it are multifold, lets just go down a list. First, there is no handling of physical evidence. Everything is done by dialogues. Second, there is no hint of action. Be it chase, escape from locked room or trap, fight with perpetrator... These are part of Holmes universe! Yes, I know, the whole budget was consumed by shooting FMV sequences with live actors, I have no problem with that. But that leads to most catastrophic…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dr. Watson wants his money back. Holmes unwrapped the mystery, but the mummy wanted a tip for the wrapping. The Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective series are actually not very good games. They show their age quite well and are crying out for remasters that will most likely never happen. The FMV sequences are fun to watch but the acting wasn't really all that good. The main gameplay is basically just guessing who to talk to next. Discovering clues felt like such a chore or maybe it was…
