While the game is "inspired by The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", it uses an original plotline — set in London in 1897 — and allows the… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (474 of 809 positive).
Players find the game a mixed experience, praising its story and puzzles but criticizing its controls and difficulty. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note it is a step up from earlier titles but still suffers from clunky mechanics. [4][5][6] Several players report technical issues and frustrating gameplay elements like pixel hunting and stealth sections. [7][8][9]

pros ✅ nice looking and detailed graphics which aged quite well ✅ character models and cutscenes looks decent ✅ there are nice variety and many complex, challenging puzzles ✅ two playable characters (Sherlock and Watson) ✅ soundtrack consist of some classical music masterpieces ✅ there is a map for fast travel ✅a well written, engaging and intriguing story about the murder of a wealthy man, whose murder was …

The story is sometimes a little hard to follow and the controls are pretty wonky. Overall I'd say it's the worst of the Sherlock Holmes games I have played so far, but it's still alright and I don't regret playing through it.

I am fresh from Holmes' 10-minute long summation of the case.... how in the eff was I supposed to figure out all of that? Never mind, it's perfectly fine to sit back and be dazzled by how Holmes is able to construct a flowing narrative about how a crime was committed based off sparse testimonies, documentations, evidences and exagerrated tales of certain characters' demises. The Secret of the Silver Earring is FAR …

After my painful experience with "Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy", the next game in the series was this one, "Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring". At first glance the game seemed like a massive improvement over its predecessor, and this motivated me to start it soon after finishing the traumatic experience of completing the first game without using a guide. The whole game feels a lot more polished than …

Easily the worst of the Holmes games by Frogwares. The sluggish imprecise movement and lack of visual clarity is bad enough when trying to gather clues, but then there are sequences where for some reason they thought it should turn into a stealth game. I gave up after getting stuck on the first of these, but have read that it wasn't the last. The sequence which caused me to quit the game and begin writing this …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The computer version of The Case of the Silver Earring was met with average reception, as GameRankings gave it a score of 70.23%, while Metacritic gave it 68 out of 100. According to Christopher Kellner of German publisher DTP Entertainment, The Case of the Silver Earring achieved "incredibly high sales" in its first three weeks in Germany, and became a "big commercial success" in the region. Alongside titles such as The Black Mirror and The Moment of Silence, it contributed to DTP's large-scale growth during 2004. Silver Earring's publisher in Britain, Digital Jesters, likewise reported "very promising" early sales figures by late 2004. During the August 21–28 period, the game debuted in…
