Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 238 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,638 of 5,323 positive).
Players widely praise the game itself as a classic JRPG with unmatched atmosphere and challenging gameplay. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the remaster as a lazy port with compressed audio, 30fps cap, and missing content. [1][2][4] Several posters recommend using mods to fix audio and framerate issues for the best experience. [1][5][6]

I LOVE this game, its one of my favorite games ever. If you love JRPGs, you should absolutely play this game. But if you do not have the means to emulate it, please wait for a sale. $50 for a re-release of a game ported to Unity with compressed audio and a 30fps cap is absurd. They also added this horrific bloom on everything, when this is a game that's supposed to be edgy and brooding. There's not even QoL updates, …

This is one of the laziest ports that i've ever seen, and yet I absolutely suggest people to buy it over playing over the ps2 version. There is a modpack called "Quality of death" that adds a ton of QOL features that made me like this game way more than the original experience, and with the mod that uncompress the soundtrack then? It became the definitive edition of SMT III for me. Buy it on sale thought, almost 40 …

This game is harsh and unrelenting at times, but is one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. The atmosphere this game gives is unmatched. From the OST to the visuals, this game gets it down perfectly. One of the classics of JRPG's for sure. As a remaster though, this kinda blows. The "True Demon Ending" being locked behind a free DLC made me completely miss it on my first playthrough round which was a kick in …

The Gold Standard of RPGs I’ve played many RPGs—Earthbound, Final Fantasy, Persona—but NO GAME I’ve ever played comes close to being as good as this one. As a Final Fantasy lover, this game's aesthetics, setting, music, and gameplay are just perfect, this game is just on his own level. What makes it unique? (Pros) Atmospheric Dread: It’s a mix of "horror"-esque and desolation. From the very moment the game begins, …

Not the best port but got this for half-off so no complaints. Definitely mod it, the 60+ fps mod + uncompressed audio mods highly recommended. Game as a whole holds up tons in terms of gameplay + story. I only played this game once on PS2 and always wanted to give it another go. One of the more brutal SMT's, I do prefer SMTIV and STMV over it but loved this game for being the 1st 3D Megaten game. I never suggest …

Otherwise, you're going to start a new game in the original version, missing a lot of content like the fights against the Fiends and the bonus dungeon.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to preface this by saying that SMT3 is a fantastic JRPG, with a great story, and the hardest game in the franchise its praise is well warranted. The confusing thing is at this moment copies of SMT3 for PS2 can be found in listings as low as $15 at Gamestop. At some point you have to question if ATLUS realizes this games worth. It is an extremely outdated game, it's 20 years old and the design elements show. The HD remake did not do much to improve these QOL issues. When this game was…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is good and this is more of a neutral review due to the quality of this remaster, however Steam does not give you this option so I have to give this one a negative rating. Personal advice: Set in-game brightness to -2 and contrast to +3, that makes the game look close to how it looks on my calibrated CRT playing the PS2 version. These setting work great on my VA monitor, slightly different values could work better on your display. On default the game is too bright with washed out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is great but the port is awful. It requires modding just to have an uncompressed audio, which is shameful from Atlus. They also managed to destroy the ambience and the lighting of the oriignal (which, again, can be modded) and that's a design choice, a very, very, very bad design choice. Insult to injury they didn't care to remake the cinematics so, in certain points of the game, you can see the level in the cinematic with the right colors and lights and you can see the astonishing…

neutral · AI labelView post →Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne is one of my favorite games of all time, the soundtrack, this janky, unforgiving yet satisfying gameplay is one of the most fun things to be ever made in a jrpg. This HD version though, as every other fan says, is an absolute scam, it needs mods to be okay to play, it disrespects the original game and kills a lot of its genius, do not buy this game, please yar yar it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is a great game, but this PC port is broken in a fundamental way. It randomly corrupts save files. Saving in different slots will not work because they are all saved as part of the same file. The only way to mitigate this is by manually backing up your save. Atlus has not solved these bugs in years, and has left community members to fix these problems themselves, rather than applying updates. To add insult to injury, the game requires you to download free packs off of its Steam page to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you dont have mental issues stay away from this game, this game wants you to be stupid enough to solve the puzzles or figure out where you have to go, but you also have to be albert einstein to survive the boss fights, quality of life to this game is like a made up thing that doesn't exist, oh yeah and there's a f-ton of labyrinths with some of them rendering your map useless. But the atmosphere, some of the story elements and most of all, the demon pokemon hunting had me hooked. Overall i…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Phenomenal JRPG. If you've finished the modern Persona trilogy and still want more, this game is a great place to start with mainline SMT. I'd say this PC port is worth it over emulation because it adds voice acting, selective fusion inheritance and keyboard support. Past that, pretty much nothing is different. A couple things to note: When starting a new game, make sure to start on either New Game - Chronicle or New Game - Maniax. A lot of the game's content is locked behind picking one of…

neutral · AI labelView post →SMT3 is one of the quintessential JRPG titles available, and has been since its release. Just because a title is somewhat synonymous with its genre doesn't make it "the best" as books like Snow Crash prove for Cyberpunk, so it's important you know what you're getting into. First, the good: +Comprehensive world building with touches of deep-series lore. Anyone who played through the first 2 SMT games will understand and enjoy Hijiri's involvement and some subtle references made thereto.…

positive · AI labelView post →Very different from the Persona games that I'm used to. This game is more focused on combat as opposed to story. I've been enjoying this more than the Persona games for sure!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best jrpg I have ever played. Very fun and very very challenging. The atmosphere is unlike any other game I have played. I love the mix between the occult, religious, and mythological imagery. But this remaster doesn't do the game justice. I recommend using mods to make the soundtrack higher quality and bring back the darker visuals of the original game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nocturne is an excellent RPG, but the HD edition doesn't really add much, and the DLC punishes you for not paying money. 100% achievement completion is effectively locked behind the paid grinding DLC. On top of that, Chronicles Lucifer on Hard is basically an RNG fight. If you want the as-intended, non-broken version of Lucifer, you have to PAY to get the Maniax version. No thanks. I wish I just emulated this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a port of a ps2 game this is a pretty bad title, it doesn't really makes a good enough job of being a remaster and seems like Atlus has learned their lesson based on the more recent RAIDOU game, the only really novel thing they changed is being able to choose the inherited skills from demon fusion but based on the rest of the game that's more of a "minimum effort" type of change. It also features a compressed OST that is laughable for a title that claims to be a "HD Remaster" and costs so…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kind of ironic to be playing it after SMT5, but it proves that this concept was unbelievably ahead of it's time. If you ignore a few boring areas (e.g. Ikebukuro tunnel), then you'll have a great time. Great music, rewarding gameplay - that is when you follow the rules of buffing and debuffing. 😛 9/10

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who has never played this game before but has dabbled in Persona titles I was looking forward to playing through this game with all the positive reviews, even installed the HD audio mod to make the game as good as it can be. The first half of the game was pretty enjoyable, story seemed interesting and the combat has some depth to it so I was having a good time. But around that halfway point I noticed that almost every single dungeon is a maze, and a really boring one at that.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the single worst HD remaster for any game I have ever played. It only runs at 30FPS(Unless you mode it which shouldn't be needed.) The PS4/5 version plays amazing. I expected the same out of this PC port. Unless you are going to go through the hassle of modding the game, stick to the PS4/5 version. Even then the need to mod it is garbage IMO. For Atlus to release a game in this state is disgusting. The P4Golden port plays amazing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i love this game, coming from someone who had to emulate to play the ps2 version of this game. the graphics are beautiful, gameplay is fun, and story is thoughtful. however, you're telling me that in the 22 years you had to make a remaster of this game, you couldn't update the compressed battle music??? when the high quality ost is readily available on youtube??? how curious. otherwise an amazing game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gorgeous artwork, amazing music and the Fusion system adds a lot of depth / replayability. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE FREE CHRONICLE DLC PACK if you are using the Standard version of the game (Deluxe Edition users can skip this), No idea why it isn't included in the Base Game since it's literally a FREE add-on... Definitely recommend some mods to make up for some of the short comings of the Remaster; HD EARS - Fixes the compressed Music. GRAPHICS CONFIGURATOR - Unlocks the framerate and…

neutral · AI labelView post →I think this game should have been given a bit more of a visual upgrade. It's one of the best RPGs ever but it really needs the fanmade 60 fps patch (at the very least). The video cutscenes look very jarring and out of place. Also, they locked the Dante stuff behind a paywall. Not cool. It has JP/EN voice acting now, and some QoL in acquiring skills so it's definitely the version to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve seen hell and it’s featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry™ series. I’ve been playing Persona games since like 15 years ago, and was always acutely aware of the Shin Megami Tensei series, but I was never actually tempted to pick up any of ’em. But I recently got Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster (presumably named that because visually it’d look right at home on a 720p TV) as a Christmas present, so I figured I’d finally tackle that challenge. And now that I’ve beaten it, I don’t…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Refunded after 40 minutes of playing because holy crap this is possibly one of the laziest remasters I've seen Atlus have the ability to make great remasters/remakes. They've proven this with the Persona series. Games like Persona 3 Reload. So that's the kind of remake/remaster quality I was expecting going into this. Having to install a bunch of mods just to make a... 2020 game ACTUALLY have 2020 (screw that, mid 2010s) features like 60fps (honestly I'd prefer 120fps), 16:9 cutscenes and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rules. Starting with the few things I don't like about this game: Random encounters suck but to each their own, the beginning of the game is kind of a slog without the compendium and then once you finally get it you either have to grind macca, or wait until you are handed 250k to be able to do anything with it. The demon xp sucks in this game but 2 of my issues are solved with the dlc. Once you hit ~Asakusa this turns into a brand new game and turns into what makes Megaten best…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm honestly not really happy with this port. The new voice work is great, and being able to select the inherited skills is much needed quality of life. Still, the new lighting looks kind of odd, especially compared to the pre-rendered cutscenes that they couldn't bother to remaster. As for the game itself, it's really good. Was my first proper entry into smt after a long time of being a persona fan. I love the press turn combat system, I adore the bleak nature and atmosphere of the world the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is a real man's rpg, typa game to put some hair on ya chest. no handholding, no fair fights, no mercy. it is suffering and struggle incarnate, which is why its peak play with mods that rebalance and modernize some of the mechanics tho, also the one that raises the fps and its genuinely an amazing experience

neutral · AI labelView post →This game may well be a blast from the past for SMT veterans, but it really does not hold up well to modern gameplay features and functions. The remaster project was a great opportunity for the developers to inject modern QoL features, but they barely did much on that front. The "Bad" - Flat out annoying things (some of these are fixable via mods, definitely should get them) Controls are a bit janky. Encounter rates are insanely high. Buffs/debuffs aren't tracked and displayed (especially…

I love Atlus' modern output, but part of me misses the era when their gameplay was more focused on dungeon crawling and turn-based battles that actually challenged you. This is a game about bringing the world back from absolute destruction, and the gameplay reflects that by having a massive world filled with dangerous labyrinths and challenging encounters. The dungeon design is insanely creative, with tons of awesome puzzles and unique mechanics. I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY THIS GAME AT FULL PRICE!!!! It's a lazy a** port. The game itself is pretty good. If your right stick isn't working for the camera. Try Alt+Tab out. That fixed it for me. I played with the stupid bumpers as camera controls for almost 2 hours before I figured that out. Still haven't figured out what the POV button is supposed to do. Doesn't do squat for me.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first Shin Megami Tensei game. Great gameplay, a fantastic soundtrack, and a very good story, it's an excellent game overall. The characters are very charismatic. The only one I didn't care about was Isamu; he felt random to me from start to finish. He was also the only bad boss fight in the entire game. I didn't feel much desire to see the other endings besides the True Demon ending. Maybe I'll go for the Freedom ending in the future when I do a 100% run. The Puzzle Boy minigame…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SMT3 is a good game if you're really into turn based combat grind. Skill advancement and monster recruitment and development are all very solid. There just isn't anything else. Nothing beyond the barest of minimum stories, level design, and interactions. This is like playing Persona only for the randomized dungeons.
