TL;DR: Great concept and atmosphere but the execution is lacking in several crucial ways, to the point where I cannot honestly recommend this game. Rarely has a game frustrated me like Ship of Fools has. It’s a… decent game that could have been great. But there are several design decisions that make me wary of ever buying anything by this developer again. Things I liked Before I go into those, let’s talk about the …

After 12h, we finally managed to finish all 4 bosses for the first time in coop ! The game is not finished however, as like many rogue-like there are rewards to get if you finish your next runs again and again : new ships, difficulty modifiers, cosmetic/fun changes, things like that. The game is really fun to play and is very nice to look at, the rogue mechanics are classic (similar in many ways to Binding of Isaac …

It's a good couple's game for pairs who like a challenge together but aren't looking for an excuse to break up yet. The chaos of dealing with too many tasks and not enough people is challenging but not overwhelming, the humor is charming and consistent, there are power-up combinations that can be memorably game-breaking, but nothing 'necessary' to have a good run and it definitely allows for players to complement …

Played 8 hours, good game, but way too repetitive with the fact that unlocking each brightness levels means doing the same few levels over and over again. There is hard mode for bosses along the way which mixes it up a bit, but it still feels like youre just doing the same thing far too often. Lack of enemy diversity doesnt help either. Needs to be more levels IMO.

Fun and addicting co-op roguelike for naval battles. Solo play is more than manageable as well but definitely gets harder after Light level 10. If you're looking for a genuinely GOOD game to play with a friend, look no further.
Summarised from 34 of the 232 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
83% of the 189 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Ship of Fools. The complaint that keeps coming up: lack of enemy and boss variety. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received "generally favorable" reviews, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Multiplayer.it rated the game at 7.5/10. Nintendo Life described the Nintendo Switch version of the game as a "roguelite deck defence that's a blast with a mate."

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a positive review out of pity for the fact that you are a indie developer, although looking at your numbers you should be more than capable of delivering such a game in a much better state. Feedback: - Game feels abandoned. - It's cringe to advertise your other game in this game's menu. - It's cringe to advertise discord page in game menu. - Saying that we need to support your other game in order to continue updating ship of fools is also very cringe. - Menu and UI doesn't feel…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game is only 2 player which is pretty sad 4 player would be astonishingly better
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Be very careful purchasing this game. The local co-op has a bug that refuses to read your second controller (Player 2) making local co-op unplayable. The team has been aware of this bug on pc for some time and it still has not been fixed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, horrible progression sync for multiplayer. I got a 100%, my partner is stuck with 32/47. She copied my save file, we tried to get the achivements again on her account, nothing worked, she'd have to start over from scratch. Devs admit that their multiplayer progression sucks in multiple posts, but they've done nothing to fix it. We contacted the support team and they pretty much said "tough luck", forums have multiple replies where devs recognize this problem, nothing's been done to…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really needed this game to be good so my wife and I could play it. I specifically had high hopes because it looked like a more sophisticated version of the game Lovers In Dangerous Space Time. But the game started to feel bland very quickly. Also, the game is both too hectic at times and too repetitive. Just reload and moved the guns around the ship. Also, there is a game breaking bug which is you lose your hard earned items if you are carrying them on your arms and the other player moves…

neutral · AI labelView post →Free RPG Day offering seems likely to focus on Piaga 1348 and Shift. I'm rather fascinated that Piaga is another game based in the 14th century—following along from Gallows Corner: A Peasants’ Revolt, which I saw @threesailsstudios.bsky.social preview at Expo and my own Ship of Fools for Sanction.

Nothing says co-op teamwork like getting punched for sleeping. Honestly, this game should come with a warning: may cause friendly beatings.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It takes a little while to get used to it, but it's so fun to be challenged and try different strategies - you don't get bored! There's so many varieties of builds to try - my sister and I love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Superb fun - hard to think of a better casual co-op game. Only drawback is that if you have more than one friend/loved one in your life, you may need to choose between them. But, come on, you don't need more than one. Stop hoarding friends! Pick your favourite and set the rest free.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →+Nice artstyle. +Interesting and promising start. +Co-op. +Cheap. -Difficulty changes too abruptly. Game is simple but last boss makes you sweat. -Too short for rougelike. -No builds, you just grab what you get. -Lack of diversity. Fools (characters) differ in one passive that doesn't really change the gameplay. -Endgame sucks. -DLC sucks. After completing the game (on the 5th or 6th try) you don't want to play it anymore because you've already seen everything the game has to offer you.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game #35 of 2026: Ship of Fools 🐟⚓ I was looking for a nice couch co-op to play with my significant other, and this one was fantastic! I rarely see people mention it, but it's honestly one of the better multiplayer experiences I've had. We rolled the credits, but there's more to play- and we will!
positive · AI labelView post →Me and my boyfriend love this game! We both wish there was more to it though, theres only 4 bosses that are always in the same location. I wish there was at least 2 bosses for each "area" so it would be a bit of a suprise which you'll be fighting. Would be nice to have more variety between runs but i look forward to see what happens with future updates!

positive · AI labelView post →Appleseed's Indie Game Of The Day! Day 9) Ship of Fools by Fika Productions This sea faring roguelike has you shooting cannonballs and deflecting attacks from waves of enemies. It's a super fun game to play co-op, that personally consumed my partner and I until we beat the final boss.
positive · AI labelView post →Ship of Fools is a great duo co-op game, if you've been looking for one! it's currently on sale for very cheap and 100% worth it remote play also works pretty well slapping an approval seal on it :)
positive · AI labelView post →The game doesn't work at all on Steam Deck since the Unity patch update. I initially thought that the game had massive audio issues (no music nor game audio) and froze whenever I checked out the audio settings. I later tried starting the actual game past the menu and it has become a very unstable, laggy mess. I have played the game before this update and it worked fine with no issues. Now I can't play the game at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was playing co-op with a friend when the blue screen popped up and my computer rebooted. After that, when I log on, the game logo pops up and doesn't fall in the next loading window. It loads indefinitely. I was in the position of being invited in. Since then, I've applied all the solutions that come out after searching, but it's not solved. I've applied game reinstallation, integrity check, graphics driver update, compatibility check option, direct and visual installation, cmd scanner…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If neutral was an option i would choose it. The game is fun, but at the time of writing (5 hours of playtime) i don't have any new stuff to do except grind the same contet untill you reach 100%. It's a shame, because it is fun, but it is just very short. Buy on sale, if not then skip.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game of two-player coop on the couch. Controller support is excellent. Runs well on Linux.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →boyfriend and I play this together. It is a lot of fun so far! We keep progressing more and more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First playthrough is casual as ♥♥♥♥ after a few upgrades, and all the next ones are just unbalanced unfun hell. Devs just couldn't figure out how to scale the difficulty smartly. Do not waste your time and money, it's just a bad roguelite

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like the game, i think there are elements to enjoy here but it could be a me problem since i played it single player but the game gets rediculously hard further on and i just cant complete it. Im not sure if things would be better with another person but as of my play through i cant recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great little roguelike, with all the DLC now it feels quite fleshed out and with tons of replayability. A mix of Overcooked, Don't Starve Together, Cult of the Lamb. Lots of fun to play with a friend, highly recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is great but it randomly booted me to the main screen and deleted all our progress. Very irritating as we spent over 3 hours playing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had a chat about Gallows Corner with Three Sails Studios at UK Games Expo. Art looks fantastic. It sounds like a fascinating game premise, and I'm right there to support ANOTHER setting/game set in the 14th century 😂 See also: SHIP OF FOOLS
neutral · AI labelView post →There's a bunch of video game soundtracks on sale on steam right now. Which ones should I get? I've got the following OSTs in the cart: * Disco Elysium: The Final Cut * Ship of Fools * Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition * Deep Rock Galactic Vol. I & II
neutral · AI labelView post →The game is a lot of fun to play with a friend. It does have some flaws, though, including a lack of variety in its biomes, bosses, and enemies. Unfortunately, I found the DLCs to be pretty underwhelming. They don't add much meaningful content, and I think the developers could have put more effort into expanding the game. Overall, it's still a fun game to spend 20–30 hours on with a friend, but it had the potential to be so much more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →one of the best co-op games for two people I ever played, the roguelike aspect keeps it fresh for replayability the solo mode could be a bit better and it lacks the ability to have other save files but overall a really fun game :]
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3 hours to kill the last boss for the first time, quite easy, but fun =] Edit: If only I did know...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A decent, but fun, co-op roguelite. The presentation of the game is great with simple but effective art direction. The characters, enemies, and bosses all feel distinct both functionally and visually. The OST is very strong too. The gameplay itself is fine. Unfortunately, its combat doesn’t offer much mechanical depth or skill expression. This causes the loop to get stale fast, even though it has a good amount of content. The progression is solid with plenty of items, characters, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got my progress wiped out, even steam cloud did not help... Well, it was a good run, but I won't leave a positive review for a game that wipes hours of my gameplay. HIC SUNT DRACONES... goodbye
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game breaking bug where only the first used controller works. Thread regarding this bug has been opened 2 years with no fix yet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the easier roguelikes I've played, but I enjoyed it enough to solo all the achievements. Game is desperately in need of enemy and boss variety. The game has plenty of potential they can take from folktales and myths about the sea for future content.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It needs some optimization but otherwise it's a great game 8/10 because of optimization
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great roguelike. Unfortunately only for two players.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is honestly a 3 out of 5 with it being just good enough to be positively recommended. This should 100% be played cooperatively. It's extremely hard enough to juggle all of the things being thrown at you even with another person to help you. Loads of different types of ammo and guns and ships for massive replayability. I'm not a fan of being able to hit and even possibly knocking your friend down. There should be a setting to turn off friendly fire. Best part of the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game. Awesome co-op specific mechanics. Very inspiring game design. I specifically really liked the character design, dialogues and the type of humour. The cannon ammunition mechanic. And the Map navigation. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Found this game on a video someone had put together featuring games that were fun to play with your partner and picked it up the same day because it looked like so much fun. And it is! I've been playing it with my boyfriend and it's really addicting! There's a lot of options for what you can do and build up to in the game and we naturally fell into a combo that has some nice synergy together. It's hectic and at some points feels almost unfair... at least until you figure out what it is you need…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game does not work with 2 controllers for local. Confirmed on 8bitdo pro2 and stadia over bluetooth. After encountering the issue I found a forum post with multiple other people who share the same issue. This has been ongoing since 2023. Do not expect a fix if you are trying to play for couch co-op
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its like a 6/10. definatly wouldnt pay full price for it but if you can get it on sale and have soneone to play with its fun for 4 - 5 hours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you haven't played Ship of Fools I HIGHLY recommend it. I've sunk nearly 50 hours into it and I love the game. Gameplay loop is fantastic and co-op is great.
positive · AI labelView post →Really fun progression and great replayability. It's very addictive once you figure out how to build for the best results.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ship of fools is a really good co-op roguelite that allows you to fix the ship, man the cannons with your friend and find all kinds of artifacts and ammo to help you through your run. With a lot of base game characters to play around with, it really is replayable and fun to enjoy! 9/10 - Amazing game. Wish it had room for more players and more biomes.
