Sifu
Developer Sloclap
Sifu is a 2022 beat 'em up game developed and published by Sloclap. Set in China, players control the child of a martial arts school's sifu (master) who seeks revenge on those responsible for their father's death. Every time the protagonist dies, they are resurrected and age up, gaining access to more powerful attacks but reducing their health. When the player character becomes too old, they can die permanently, in… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

I don't like Sifu and it's entirely a skill issue on my part. I just find the combat in Sifu so frustratingly hard. It feels like it relies more on memorization of enemy movesets than it does on testing my own reflexes. The game also mostly drops you in without giving you much time to learn to play. There is the prologue followed by the basic tutorial, but I felt it didn't give me enough to truly understand the game …

Sifu is basically a game about getting beaten up until you finally learn how to beat everyone else up. At first you feel like a martial arts master, then the first real enemy shows up and suddenly you’re 70 years old and questioning your life choices. The combat is super satisfying once you learn it, but the game will absolutely punish you for every mistake. Hard, frustrating, but really fun when it finally clicks. …

A Brutal, Beautiful Lesson in Kung Fu and Humility Sifu isn’t just a game, it’s a test of patience, a cinematic masterpiece, and a digital mid-life crisis all rolled into one. Developed by Sloclap, this is a title that demands your absolute respect. If you go into this thinking you can just mash buttons and "Bruce Lee" your way to the finish line, the first group of nameless thugs in the Squats will gladly show you …

Sifu didn’t click the first time. Came back later and it became one of the best combat experiences I’ve ever had. Fast to learn, brutally hard to master. Once the dodge system clicks, everything flows.

1 hour of gameplay: I want to get a refund for this game but I won't because I bought this for my birthday so therefore I shall keep it. Already at the starting level and died because this game is either straight up unfair or just completely broken. You will almost never parry in this game unless you have no job which gives you the time to memorize every single enemy's attack pattern. Dodging in this game is also a …

87% of the 268 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Sifu. The complaint that keeps coming up: very high difficulty can be frustrating. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Sifu received "generally favorable" reviews from critics for most platforms, except for the PS4 version which received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. IGN called the game "utterly uncompromising in its design", praising the narrative, combat, controller haptics, environments, AI, structure, and expressed minor issues with the camera. Destructoid called it "a constant uphill battle" and "intensely rewarding", concluding, "Sifu is a challenge worth taking on and overcoming. It's a story of vengeance with a little heart at the end, and though it might not land perfectly, it's got a lot of style and action to back it up." Game Informer's review was…

It perfectly mashes beat 'em up, souls-like, and rogue-like elements in a way we've never seen before. Game Design and Mechanics The game designers of Sifu are genuinely geniuses. The rogue-like age gimmick, sekiro's posture bar and beat 'em up mechanics that feel great all have a synergy that reinforces each other. The art style is phenomenal, the game looks insanely good, proving once again…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To be fair the game presents itself well and looks pretty nice at first glance. When the combat actually works the takedowns and beating ts out of people is genuinely satisfying. Unfortunately that is where the praise ends. The biggest flaw dragging this game down is the combat system itself. Instead of feeling like a kung fu panda martial arts master the gameplay devolves into mindless button spamming. Relying on the parry button is always a hit or miss gamble. Even if you take your time to…

I recommend the Sifu guide by underthemayo on youtube if you're having trouble with the game. I don't really know what else to say other than that it's just a sick ass game, I hope every future beat em up takes notes from this one, would love a co-op version of this game.

neutral · AI labelView post →I recently played through Sifu, and I had to draw the main character, because the game is extremely cool. Every time you die in the game you get resurrected, but you are 1 year older, as it is about how vengeance will consume your life if you let it. #Art #Sifu
positive · AI labelView post →Look up the game “Sifu” it’s a beat em up action game. You play as a martial artist and if you “die” you’re resurrected but aged older. As you age your attacks are stronger but you have less and less health.
neutral · AI labelView post →Sifu’s a top tier action game that nails tons of Chinese Kung Fu moves perfectly. If it only had the Vengeance ending it’d be straight up mid, but the Wude true ending is what gives the whole game its real heart. It’s got a decent learning curve on top of that, and group fights can hit way harder than bosses sometimes. Pretty bittersweet that a French dev put together such a solid showcase of Chinese culture.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is it an interesting combat system? Yes. Does the combat take place in interesting environments? Yes. Is the aging mechanic a cheap trick to add runtime to a game with 5 levels? Yes.

positive · AI labelView post →I am not a big fan of fighting games, but I have thoroughly enjoyed this one. PROS + very nice graphical style + good gameplay + good story CONS - signifficant fps drops when the game loads new areas (aka not during fights) - alot of one-way doors that make you miss collectibles for no good reason - quite poor keyboard controlls (its meant for controller it seems) - cant change camera FOV or distance, it feels too zoomed in - missing mouse lock to window
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the concept of En Garde! but after playing the game I think I love the concept far more than the game itself does. Letting AAA/Sifu-isms affect the main gimmick of the game by having all items auto target was IMO a huge mistake esp with how insanely strong items are to begin with
neutral · AI labelView post →Received it on Epic Games for free. Then purchased it on Steam to support the devs. + + + Feels like an interactive kung fu movie. GREAT atmoshpere, music, animation, story and art style. Secret Level series on Prime has a "Sifu: It Takes a Life" 7 minutes long episode. That sums up perfetly what this whole game is about. - - - BE AWARE! It will take time and lots of practice to master the fight system (parry timing and combos) and actually be good at this game. Skill based progress…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This looks INSANE! (Side note: why don’t anyone make a game based on THE RAID or at least the concept, which seems absolutely ripe for adaptation. SIFU came close. Or, DREAD for that matter, which is basically sci-fI THE RAID.)
neutral · AI labelView post →The best Kung Fu game. It’s a shame the developer shifted their focus on making football game rather than a sequel to this masterpiece.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FYI Sifu is on Xbox game pass - if you haven’t checked it out and enjoy a game with challenging and responsive combat, I strongly recommend it. It’s got the best hand to hand combat I’ve ever seen in a game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So immersive that I masterfully performed a flying kick into my monitor... Anyway, I love beating up strong independent women and this game taught me that it's always ok to use your fists and legs instead of your words. And I mean, I've been applying that to everyday life lately and already I've noticed a strong increase in me winning debates left and right via this new method. 9/10 - I entered a nightclub at the age of 20 and left at 70. Enough said.

neutral · AI labelView post →By far one of the best martial arts games I've ever played. Sifu takes Sekiro's posture system (or Structure as it's called in the game) and builds it up from there. Not only can you 'parry', but also dodge to regain structure. Couple that with simple but deep combat and a variety of engaging enemies, you end up with a satisfying dance of attack and defence. It rewards mindful patience, timing, and spacing, over thoughtless button mashing. You’d be surprised how useful spacing out your…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this originally because it was on sale in a bundle with Expidition 33 and it was cheaper than just buying E33 by itself so i thought why not buy it for cheaper with another game instead... After playing both I can say this game is WAYYYYYY better than E33 and this is honestly one of my favorite games OAT with some of the best replayability for a story game I've seen!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are so many things about this game that are so cool. The style, the animation, the fighting mechanics. My biggest problem is, if you're going to make a game that's this punishing, you better at least make it fair. If I'm landing a combo, an enemy can interrupt it and knock me down. If an enemy is landing a combo on me, I can't interrupt it, even if I'm not stunned and able to throw a punch. Games like this that aim for the "Souls-like" level of difficulty need to work perfectly, otherwise…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One final thing I'll say about Sifu is that the game has style o' plenty. It'd be so easy to lean into the typical Chinese elements and have the level be a restaurant or the Great Wall. Instead, we have a nightclub an a museum. There is something punk-ish about it. And it's why Sifu stands out.

Don't listen to reviews saying the combat is lacking or unbalanced those people are objectively bad at the game and should feel bad because of it. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a crappy PC, but if you set everything to low and the resolution to 800x600, you can easily get 60 fps. The game is always interesting because searching for hiding places and keys is part of it. I love it, and the adrenaline rush of each fight is incredible. You will suffer a lot at the beginning because it's difficult (I play with a keyboard and mouse), but once you get used to it, you'll have a great time playing. 100% recommended if you love martial arts.
