What people are saying
Most players praise its visuals and fluid movement, but some find it repetitive and unpolished.
Many players are impressed by the game's stunning visuals and fluid movement, with several calling it a solid metroidvania. The combat, especially the parry system and spear throwing, is frequently highlighted as satisfying and fun. 60 of 208 · most liked firstSomber Echoes is a bit rough around the edges, but there is a lot of fun to be had with what this game has to offer. My review is after obtaining 100% achievements in 9 hours. Pros: - Combat is excellent. Attacks feel appropriately weighty, enemy attacks are properly telegraphed, and sniping enemies from across the map with the spear was never not satisfying. - The game looks excellent - Plenty of secrets to find and backtrack for - Movement is unique. There is no traditional double…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was pretty torn on this game. I very much enjoyed the first 75% of the game. It was shaping up to probably be a good solid B tier game. The end game absolutely ruined it for me and probably brings it down to a C tier game. It's really not a terrible game. It has some good things but the end game really ruined the fun for me. Positives: The game is quite immersive and has great atmosphere and art direction. It uses a very unconventional setting that helps make if feel unique and actually…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →****ReadMe**** There are a lot of paid for positive reviews on this game. Also the recorded playtime you spend in the demo will get exported to the full version if you purchase it which is kinda messed up(for refund purposes). Basically, if you played the demo, then you’ve basically played the full game. There’s nothing in the full game that’s not in the demo. When I decided to buy the full game, I thought I’d be getting more content than what I experienced in the demo. Unfortunately, after…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you are lucky enough to read this review.....Somber Echoes caught me with my guard down in the best way possible. I expected Blasphemous in space and instead i got a masterfully narrated greek tragedy (Do you remember the Ulises 31 TV show?) with astounding visuals, AMAZING combat encouraging perfect parries and projectile deflecting all together with a lot of mobility ( Aether zapping is the best FRIGGING THING EVER). I cant wait to discover everything the game has in store! What a time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried to enjoy Somber Echoes, but it simply isn’t for me. The combat and encounters are too simple, and exploration, which is a main focus, is hindered by numerous obstacles that make traversing the landscape frustrating. Climbing onto some ledges or specific points requires a level of precision that feels unnecessary and aggravating. The issue lies in how platform heights are just within the player's jumping ability, making it frustrating to barely reach them. While traversal around precise…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know how to hell I got all the achievements, but I cannot recomend this metroidvania. GOOD POINTS: - This game has nice graphics and art style. - This game has new mechanics that I didn't see in other metroidvania. - The lore of this metroidvania is relatively good BAD POINTS: - The game is extremely repetitive - A huge world almost completely empty - Few Boss fights - Extremely stressful puzzles - An AI that never gets tired of talking - Without death penalties - Lost all the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR, if you absolutely NEED a new metroidvania this checks that box, but honestly, you're better off just replaying Shadow Complex or another, far better title. I was initially sold on the trailer showing off the movement tech and indeed the movement is fairly solid. But that’s about where the good ends. What starts off as a standard metroidvania quickly devolves into mediocre and ends poorly. A lot of the other Steam reviews accurately suggest this as a 6/10 game. It’s not good, it’s not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My copy was provided by the devs* There were some parts of the game that I enjoyed, more so toward the second half once you have more freedom to explore, but overall I thought the game was very unpolished, for example it has a lot of sound effects that are too silent, mismatched, or simply missing. The game is approximately 10 to 14 hours so relatively good length, depending on how many things you collect, as well as a few additional side objectives. I actually did not enjoy the first 3 hours,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sideways thumb, at best. The game is beautiful, but it does not respect your time with the map progression, power-ups, and imbalanced boss fights. I felt lost, aimless, and underpowered the entire time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somber Echoes is a game that mashes Greco-Roman mythology with sci-fi and metroidvania. ...you heard me. But when it comes to metroidvanias, you always need every tool in your arsenal. It's just how the genre works. ...so what if we removed a key piece of our defenses? youtu.be/jszRTXzdmaM
neutral · AI labelView post →Love it, sci fi ancient greece in space never seen this combo before but damn does it work. A bit on the shorter end 10hrs in and almost at the end maybe 12-14 hrs if you explore everything but that's perfectly fine imo since i'm tired of these slog games that take 30-50hrs+ to finish. Great atmosphere, fun gameplay that's more focused on platforming than combat, bosses can take a few tries but are never unfair, parrying and deflection have huge windows so even with bad reflexes like mine i can…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well I tried my best, but the combat in this metroidvania just doesn't work. It's like sekiro except that you're super fragile... but in exchange you get health back on each kill. It kind of reminds me of grime but in grime you will do well once you understand the "dance". Here, that isn't the case. It eventually kills any fun in exploring the world.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While this game is beautiful it has a lot of problems with gameplay. The block is inconsistent. The lightstream is a pain in the butt to use in some areas. The spear is highly annoying to aim and when you try you are already being hit. The boss fights are horribly scripted and generally just use adds to be even more annoying instead of making good fights. The monsters in the game are there to be more annoying than anything else, and generally just slow down the gameplay to a grinding halt. It…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful presentation, graphics and music are fantastic. The movement is very fluid and by the end of the game you're literally flying over the map. I have a number of minor gripes, but this game is better than 75% of the metroidvanias I've played.

neutral · AI labelView post →Looks Pretty, has a good scifi look to it mixed with greek gods feel. music feels okay. Maps are mostly empty. There are very few enemies and it feels like a long boring maze. No punishment for dying, no hand holding, but the way the levels are designed you have no clue what to do or where to go. Nothing stands out The lantern mechanic is a new take for a metroidvania type. But overall, this is a bad game. And I regret buying it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm about half way through the game, but I can already tell I like it. Having weighed in the pros and cons, I can definitely recommend it. Here are the things that I liked, and disliked, about this game. Liked - Smooth and responsive controls. Movement feels natural and intuitive, very important in games like this. - Accessible UI. Simple yet comprehensive, all the info is there without feeling overwhelming. - Graphics. One of the highlights of the game, the environment looks gorgeous all…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a solid Metroidvania. I liked the story and map design which is Greek mythology but sci-fi. The combat is also good but I never used the axe and bow and relied mostly on the sword and shield. What is also good is that you can put up to four pins with customized names and add nicknames to sub-areas to keep track of possible secrets and items. And believe me, using them helps you a lot when you get to the point where the whole map is explored and you are missing the last survivor or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful and fun to play , also runs great on Steamdeck. If you like these type of games don't miss it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has absolutely no right to be as good as it is. If you're looking for your next Metroidvania then look no further. Somber Echoes is incredibly well paced with an intriguing premise and story, challenging boss fights, tricky platforming puzzles, and a narrator that speaks in iambic trimeter like the Greek tragedies of antiquity!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing Somber Echoes is a fun experience. You take on the role of Adrestia, a resurrected tribune on a mission to stop her twin sister, Harmonia, from dismantling the universe. To do this, you explore the massive, ruined Greco-Roman spaceship Atromitos, discovering secrets, upgrading your skills, and battling powerful enemies. https://youtu.be/M8WvcxD_6vQ Traveling is especially enjoyable thanks to the Aether Lanterns: you can transform into a sun-like star, run through the air, string them…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game looked promising so I got it on discount to give it a fair shot. I was drawn in by the promise of perfect deflections, but was often dissatisfied. Overall maybe a 6/10 for me. Not horrible by any means but I found myself more frustrated and annoyed than enjoying the game. For an indie title I hope it means better things to come. I found the bosses tedious and unnecessarily punishing yet at the same time ridiculously easy. I trivialized most of the bosses by killing them in less than…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very Good overall game. Linear main story with branches for loot/ side stories. Well made in progression, platforming, combat, story, art and music. Narration feels like an old Greco-Roman play. Bonus for actually pronouncing the Greek names correctly. The only negative is the end game fast travel system.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The hitboxes are extremely terrible, the timings are terrible and something like a balance does not exist. - like 1 inch away from enemy and still hit - theoreticaly you can parry/deflect projectiles, but one milisecond too late or too early and you still get hit and since that 1 pixel (onscreen) projectile have a real hidden size of a truck, you get hit no matter what, so you cant evade or jump away or whatever - even the first enemies you ever encounter kill you in 1-2 hits, but you need…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having an absolute blast with this game so far! Somber Echoes takes the best parts of Metroidvanias and builds on them, blending action-adventure platforming with a touch of Dark Souls for a darker, more intense vibe and challenging experience. The visuals are absolutely stunning. I didn’t know a platformer could look this good! The soundtrack and narration tie everything together into a cinematic experience that gave me goosebumps more than once!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like the game! The graphics are beautiful, and the Greek voice actress Melina sounds absolutely amazing. The controls feel super responsive, and the spear you unlock early on is so much fun to use. Parrying is also really well done and satisfying. The greek dark fantasy theme is both eerie and super interesting, it’s such a cool atmosphere. The sound design is great, and the music is especially fantastic. Definitely worth playing!

neutral · AI labelView post →This was really good. I especially enjoyed the exploration with how quickly you can move about the map with tons of fast travel points, shortcuts and generally the movement abilities you have. The combat was fun - the parry timing was super forgiving as well. Bosses had really cool designs and their fading in and out of the background was really cool. The aesthetic in general and the atmosphere it delivered was top notch. Gave me some really old school Metroidvania feeling. Especially when you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad! Not exactly top tier in this genre, but a respectable entry. The combat feels pretty solid, even if there isn't a huge roster of enemies and bosses. Platforming is also fun, with a somewhat unique gimmick with the "Aether Lamps", that let you create your own jump pads, of a sort. I like this because it makes tough platforming challenges into more of a puzzle that has to be worked out, rather than the solution being obvious and simply requiring precise mechanical execution. I like the…

neutral · AI labelView post →I will start this review with a quick summary, just in case you are interested in an overall view without reading too much. Somber Echoes is a metroidvania with a huge focus on platforming, exploration and parry-based combat, emphasizing in the first two. To give you an example; have you played GRIME? That's another metroidvania with parry-based combat and some challenging platforming. Well, this game is like GRIME, but exchanging the combat sections for platforming/exploration, and that…

neutral · AI labelView post →Somber Echoes is a beautiful but boring game. It's not the fault of the art team - they knocked it out of the park. Every background is filled with gorgeous Roman art. Vast cities, raging fires, Romanesque hi-tech trains, and esoteric biological experiments line the background. The background is filled with sweeping vista after sweeping vista, and I want to go to those places and explore them. I want to see the Roman city, the verdant forest, the hi-tech laboratory - they look genuinely cool.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was about to give it a positive review but the inconsistency of the hover boots and the frustration of the puzzle that involve them are too much. They are absoluttely atrocious.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was a bit of a disappointment. The game has a decent look overall. Movement is good, and the dash/warp ability is satisfying. The upgrades you get don't change the game much, you get a spear and a bow which has a downside, so I didn't really use it, and you get multiple dash charges, but that's about it. The combat is very basic, just spamming 1 attack basically. The story makes little sense, as it's basically you walking around admiring statues and looking at objects in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game, one of the best metroidvanias I've played. It's more traversal-oriented, not combat, but this is refreshing after all these soulslikes. Movement is fluent, upgrades are gamechanging, the world and overall vibe are a bit dark, but also, at the same time, full of hope. I'm glad I gave it a chance.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game guys, really enjoyed it. Savoured every bit of it. Music, ambience and graphics are awesome. I played it on Steamdeck, the play is solid. I'm a big Metroid fan and you guys pulled through. I think the difficulty level is just right. Could be harder, but this level is enjoyable. I did encounter a few bugs that I already submitted to the discord channel but nothing major. I love that you put a save right next to the throne room so we can go through the different endings without too…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am really surprised how good this game is. I was just looking for something to fill the MV itch but the developers here have really outdone themselves. A whole lot of TLC went into making this game and it shows. It is breathtaking. i found myself holding the aether orb just so i could rotate my left thumb stick and enjoy the lighting effects on the different angles of the ship. There are plenty of tried and true mechanics here, but there are some very unique ones as well. It took me a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's so so good. It's a solid metroidvania. Very touching story also
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an incredible experience in gameplay dynamics and visuals! I haven't played through the whole game yet, but I'm looking forward to every free moment... when the kids are at school and kindergarten. :) I especially love the 'Bird' boss fight! BRAVO!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very pleasing to the eye, very satisfying on the exploration side like any metroidvania should be. Bosses are harder but manageable, maybe with the exception of the 2 giant spiders who really gave me a hard time. Some small bugs (like not being able to upgrade a weapon although you have all that is needed in your inventory, or the laser robot arm hitting you thru walls) but not to a point where it blocked me in progressing. Just completed the game (1 of the 4 endings, need to try the other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somber Echoes is a 2.5D Metroidvania with a great story and playbility, you play as Adestia a warrior who lives on Atromitos (Giant Mother Ship) in space and venture into a very interesting choices of biomes full of secrets and challenging platforming sections. The gameplay is solid, you will need sometime at the beginning to master the lantern system, but once you do, the game gets even more fun, as you progress you will get abilities in form / shapes of weapons that will help you backtrack…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game will definitely scratch the Metroid dread itch. It has the same general feel and graphics, world layout, as Metroid dread. The combat and moment is extremely fluid, satisfying, and fun. The Aether Lantern ability, being granted so early in the game, being so intrinsic to the gameplay, is ridiculously satisfying and more games should absolutely utilize gimmicks like this for basic world traversal. It even grants you a Metroid like morph/spider ball and version of a shinespark in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early game.. I hated it.. almost refunded it. Then it's flaw were less visible and the caracter movement improved a lot. The late game exploration is very enjoyable. It's a casual metroidvania. Just need to get off the early game! 6/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The background scenery is the best I've ever seen in a side scroller. Every room seems different and looks beautifully done. 10/10 on the artwork. Great little metroidvania. Combat feels good and exploration is fun. The story is interesting the narration is nice. About 17 hours or so for full completion. Would recommend at full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Copying my comments from elsewhere (hope it formats properly.) Gonna start with the positives and then get to the negatives. - The spear throwing is incredibly fun, and made me feel like a ninja at times. - Late-game mobility is very freeing and fluid (unless you're getting hit by a fire beam.) - Some of the OSTs are amazing (still sad that they took that one away from near the beginning, but I can see why they did.) - A fantastic use of 3D environments in a side-scrolling game. Really made…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite Adrestia’s combat prowess which is on showcase right away, Somber Echoes is more of an exploration-based Metroidvania. That said, Adrestia has quite the arsenal at her disposal that you should learn how to utilize so that when fighting is necessary, you will be ready. Shortly after starting, you get a sword, Gladius, and a shield. The shield is not just for blocking. Parrying is a key component to the combat system. A last-minute block with briefly stun your enemy, common ones and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a tough decision but after considering all positives and negatives I have decided to refund the game. It's not a totally bad game, I was struggling with my decision, but ultimately I'have decided to wait and see if the game will improve in the future with updates. The main reason for me to skip this title was a mix of difficulty and scarce save points. I don't mind difficulty, but if the distance between save points is huge it means I have to repeat certain areas many times. Here's an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this one. Very solid game and has a rather interestin' story. I like that is has very good voice actin' to back it up. Graphically it looks good as well. That lighting really adds to the atmosphere. The price may be a bit steep for some but I think it's warranted here. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A stunning looking metroidvania with unique atmosphere. Surprisingly engaging storytelling which you don't have to follow if you are too eager to explore. It is obviously crafted it out of love for the genre. A must play for metroidvania fans.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somber Echoes is fine. You, the player character, are brought back to life at the bottem of some type of scifi greek mythology spaceship and must climb up it again. While there is more to the story, it is told entirely through a narrator in the past tense. Encounters with NPCs or flashbacks are explained/narrated to you rather than actually happening (think, instead of an NPC saying "Thanks" you have the narrator say "The NPC thanked you". This may work for some players but for me it never…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a surprisingly good metroidvania. Although it starts fairly weak, after an hour or so it gets a lot more interesting. Both mechanically as well as story and environments. Solid platforming, exploration and combat, with a few difficulty spikes but overall not at Hollow Knight difficulty level. It excels at exploration and secrets and the story is actually very good. Definitely recommended if you like HK, Ori et al.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somehow, despite loving the gloom & doom nature of some games and other forms of media (books, movies, stories, etc.), and despite favoring that kind of theme in video games, seeking it out and always marveling at and witnessing it always culminating in grim devastation, with, if we are lucky, perhaps a glimmer of hope at the end, never occurred to me to look for that in a Metroidvania. By stroke of luck, I started playing Somber Echoes, and it was just that. The mix of Olympians and…
