Players who liked Curse of the Sea Rats talk about beautiful hand-drawn art and animations; those who didn't talk about clunky controls and unresponsive input. Which matters more to you?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Curse of the Sea Rats received an aggregate Metacritic score of 59/100 on Switch, 66/100 on PC and 63/100 on PS5, all indicating "mixed or average reviews". In a December 2022 preview, Hardcore Gamer said "it shows incredible promise so far" and praised the voice acting, animation and visuals. After its release, Slant Magazine criticized the game's humor, calling it unfunny and out of place in what seems to be meant as a challenging game. They also felt the game did not use its concept or differentiate the protagonists enough. Commenting on the game balance, they said that the bosses were frequently too easy, yet the other enemies could sometimes defeat the protagonists with ease. Pocket…

Kickstarter Backer. So uh, I don't know if that counts as a free game or not, sorry. It was given as a part of the money I gave so.. paid-ish? Some of the suggestions and bugfixes I reported back in Beta/Alpha still present, like running in the wrong direction after quick L/R input change, so that tells me they may not have been reading them all. Difficulty curve seems still unbalanced, especially at the start of the game. Certain enemy attacks track your X-position to be able to automatically…

If they would have spend more time on gameplay and controls, and a bit less on the hand drawn animations, it might have fun to play. I think this game was only intended for co-op play, but never to be played alone. Unforgiving game, you die with a few hits. This takes away all the fun and within 10 minutes you loose all the urge to even see if it get's any better if you would unlock some skills. Many have the tag metroidvania which most (atleast i) compare to Castlevania or Bloodstained, while often they fail. But Curse of the Sea Rats succeeds in that, you got this big map, you got all sorts upgrades, level ups, everything a true metroid/ratvania should have, set in a nicely animated cartoony atmosphere. I could not find myself in most of the negative reviews (and i have no idea if things have been altered since some played in a beta phase), the enemies are easy, sometimes too easy…

I wanted to finish this game before i gave it a proper review. While the hand animation art is spectacular, there comes a problem when it comes to game play elements that weren't looked into or properly play tested especially when it comes down to co-op. I played this with my friend and the amount of bugs we encountered were ridiculous and made the game frustrating at points in time. The only fix for said bugs is to exit to main menu (if you still can and are not blocked by a bug) or exit the…

I wanted to like this game. I really did. The art style and hand-drawn assets are actually very good. But the game just isn't fun to play. It focuses on the worst aspects of metroidvanias, and the actual movement and combat are very clunky and unsatisfying. Here's hoping the game did well enough for the devs to make a better game next time!

I provided some feedback regarding sound and controls that don't appear to have been fixed or resolved since reporting it and between launch. The controls aren't nearly as tight for the time they've been developing it since crowdfunding. I hope there are some post updates and considerations from the larger audience since the launch date. The game is beautifully rendered, I'll give it that much. The controls definitely leave something to be desired with an overcomplicated blocking feature that is challenging to figure out the timing of let alone figuring out the timing of enemy strikes to perfectly align the block in the middle of combat where combination swings leave you trapped in motion and open to enemy attack too often. There are too many instances of dash+ double jump that have to be perfectly executed again and again and…

This game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. I backed this game like 2 years ago because it was a "ratoidvania". I went "Ooo teehee I like rats and Metroidvanias, i will back it!" (This guy has no idea what he is doing). It starts out alright (despite the fact the opening cinematic is in 480p for some reason), kind of cool to see 4 different characters with different skill trees. I only tried one of them, so I don't know how well made that part is but the one I played was fine. One of the earliest annoyances is…

Is the game pretty to look at it? Yes. Is it fun? Kinda. Does it succeed as a metroidvania? Nope. These days, if you're going to design a game of this type then you need to recognize you are building it on the shoulders of games that came before it - games that excelled at the mechanics and tropes that now define the genre. Unfortunately, Curse of the Sea Rats leaves many of those mechanics unpolished or ignored: unbalanced skill trees and characters (is there any reason NOT to play as…

So far, so good - I liked what I played during the first hour give or take. Nice graphics and music, good-enough characters & story for the genre, and most importantly (for me) a fresh, interesting setting. Honestly, as much as I love Dark Souls and Hollow Knight, it can get tiring when almost every metroidvania nowadays follows the same template: destroyed kingdoms, punishing deaths, super-vague story and all. Gameplay here is not the snappiest but perfectly serviceable so far, especially…

Like others, I wanted to enjoy this game as it is actually full of charm, however, the controls are stiff and unsatisfying, everything does unnecessary large and unbalanced amounts of damage, and speaking of damage, there is something about the contact damage in this game, I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's really annoying, I think it's the fact that there is no knock back and there are very few frames of invincibility after taking damage, which causes you to sometimes sit inside an…

I wanted to like this game, but there's several problems. Namely, the combat is really hard, -but- doesn't give you a way to dodge roll, seemingly never gives you I-frames, and you get hurt just by touching an enemy, even if that doesn't make any sense given the enemy. (For example, why should the enemy whose entire moveset is to throw bombs damage you by proximity? By that logic why don't we damage them by proximity?) It's also unreasonably hard to jump over enemies. Oh, and speaking of…

Hate to be that guy because the characters look great and the game looked promising in Early access. ***My hour count was reset after the release*** I have 8 hrs total with the demo and previous build. TLDR: It's an Ok game, but not a good Metroidvania. The gameplay is not great. character combat is clunky locking you into a sequence so you can't avoid hits. It wouldn't be so bad because there is not a lot of enemies but you hit a room with many of them in wave and that's where the fight…

I had a lot of fun with this, even though I'm not even a fan of metroidvania style games. The art style of this game is beautiful, and I love the small animated cutscenes where it feels like watching an animated movie. The platforming can be a bit rough at times, since the character seems a bit ‘heavy’. But I got used to it over time. Combat is fine. Nothing to gush about, but definitely not as unfair or clunky as some reviews make it seem to be in my opinion. (Maybe there was an update?)…

I randomly bought this on release and finished it then (albeit one of the bad endings) but put it on the backburner to see how the game would mature with future patches. I was pleasantly surprised to see it had quite a bit in the ensuing three months or so. At launch, it had some questionable design decisions that were at odds with what one would expect from a metroidvania such as pitfalls that resulted in game over, attacks that overcommitted as you couldn't cancel the animation, and a…

I am going to get straight to the point. Curse of the Sea Rats is a by the numbers Metroidvania that brings absolutely nothing to the genre. The map layout and design is as basic as they come, with barely any fun secrets to discover and not that exciting to traverse through. Combat also is extremely basic, you have a set of well... basic attacks and you stay with them start to finish. Even though you unlock a couple of spells/special attacks they are barely worth the trouble and after a bit of…

Hard pass. Another style over substance which I'm getting tired of with games. While aesthetically it is fantastic, there are lots of control and platforming issues. It seems about a third of the time trying to perform an air attack the character would just jump without attacking while hitting the attack button. Then there were sequences where you would need to climb/escape a growing hazard and lets say you just wanted to jump to the platform above you but it was short and there was a wall next…

There are some minor issues with hit boxes, knock back, and control inputs that could be tighter, but I'm still enjoying it overall (and it's launch day, so they may clean it up). Curse of the Sea Rats is a beautifully animated, pirate-themed Metroidvania that immediately stands out thanks to its rich hand-drawn art style and charmingly odd premise. Developed by Petoons Studio and published by PQube, the game begins aboard a British prison ship in 1777, where a powerful pirate witch named Flora Burn uses her magic to transform the entire crew into humanoid rats. Four prisoners—each condemned for their own misdeeds—are promised freedom if they can track down Flora, rescue…

I haven't finished the game yet but so far I don't understand why the reviews are mixed. It might be the fixes, I can't know. But the exploration, music, enemies and characters are all great. It's very much inspired by Hollow Knight. So you have to learn how to fight, sure, but you can still grind exp and skill points, so I don't think it's too difficult. Only thing I dislike is that two characters have derogatory names.

I backed this on Kickstarter in 2020 and followed the development over the years, because I was excited for the self-proclaimed 'ratoid-vania' and the art style drew me in. Now that it's finally here, I've gotten through one playthrough and it's fair to say the wait was questionable. First of all, the game's main difficulty curve relies on you being able to react quickly to flying enemies that can tank half your health no matter how much health you have or whatever level you are. This is a good game. As someone who played it twice (both before and after the quality of life improvements) I can say it is a good game. It has its flaws with the combat and exploration but being labyrinthian metriodvania, issues with exploration is a given. The humor with the writing and dialogue is some of the best I've seen/heard in a video game like this. The visuals are still so so good with the animation and character models. Its was never too hard or too easy as long as you take your…

Curse of the Sea Rats is a very nice metroidvania game where all the ship crew were cursed and turned into rats, you venture in order to find a way to stop the curse and take on the enemy pirate crew that caused all this hassle. I would first like to highlighted the bosses in the game as I loved each single one of them, they were very nice and very unique, gives you a tough challenge especially early game when you first start. the art design for each one along with the enemies and main…

---see where this game landed on my Metroidvania tier list beneath this review!--- Very surprised that this turned out to be a fun game in June 2024 given its mixed reception. Perhaps things have improved since launch? It took me 7.5 hours for 100%. It's just a very solid game sort of in the vein of HunterX and Bloodstained: RotN (but smaller in scale, easier and minus the spells). The game has gorgeous visuals, the music is also quite decent (though no bangers). Biggest issue I had…

If you want a pretty, simple, low-stress metroidvania, this is a decent choice. The best part of coming late to the party is all of the QoL and bug fixes being implemented. Game play was smooth, outside of freezing during the final boss fight (opened inventory to load up on healing items a bit too fast). Outside of boss fights, most spike traps and pits don't instakill you. Plenty of resources to be had. The quests were fairly straightforward, and most secrets were pretty easy to find. I was…

not a masterpiece by any stretch but i played it with my wife who is relatively new to gaming and we had a great time working through the stages and completing the game. the coop really made it worth it i don't think i would have had the same response if i played it alone. it would have been nice if there was more to spend money on and if the bosses required a little more strategy, other then the first boss who seemed to be ridiculous every boss after that was a blip in the road map. but for…

I played this game in co-op and had a blast! One of the best co-op MVs I can think of. The lockdown at the end was a little frustrating, but it didn’t ruin it for us. Also, if you make it to Flora and aren’t done clearing off the rest of the map or doing quests, just let her kill you. We had about 94.5% of the map done as the last ~ 5% is in the final area of the game after Flora. All-in-all a fun MV that doesn’t deserve the hate it’s getting currently imo. Another thing worth noting is the…

The game is looking great but... It really feels bad. Main issue is the combat and controls. Some one will love the game for coop and visuals but not me, sry devs.

I backed this game on Kick Starter when it was still in the development passe. This game has some issues that need to be addressed, the games tutorial tells you very little of what you need to know about how to play, The skill increase menu is hidden behind a dialog wall, and it can feel like a grind at first. The art style is nicely done, more so knowing that this is hand drawn. Each character feels different with different combat styles, making for a good experience over all.

What a banger. Art is great. Story is cool. We need more pirate MVs imo. Exploration is great and the dialogue is actually good enough to keep my interest. 4 characters to choose from with different attacks. Music is excellent. They managed to cram so many cool and piratey biomes into this. Fun bosses. Automatic map markers for important npcs. My biggest complaints are tracking quests is not anywhere in the game menus so you have to remember most things. Thankfully npcs are marked. Combat can…

I really wanted to give this game a chance, but, it has so many issues. Beautiful Animations and Art, sound is good, map design being a good Metroidvania. But those are things that ruined it for me. - Contact damage combined with short range attacks where you are basically needing to be lucky if you hit the enemy or vice versa. - Imbalance of characters, with Buffalo having the only range attack, making her better than the rest. - Soulslike (combined with the hit detection) approach with a…

It's not perfect, but it's a good metroidvania and it's fun to play both alone and with friends. I didn't play before it got patched, but I think the game is plenty enjoyable as it is now. The art and the music are definitely top tier!

Whoa what a fantastic ride! The 4 player characters are very unique and the way everything's laid out with skill advancement but shared points to spend on it I think works very well. The animations are AMAZING and I love all of the voice acting! The story is cute and engaging and some of the side quests are very sweet. The platforming is mostly easy with some sudden spikes in lethality with a soul's like loss of half your points to spend on skills and unlocking quick travel and money. Enemy…

Curse of the Sea Rat is a audio-visually solid handrawn 2D metroidvania platformer for genre newbies which misses (like Itorah) the chance to really stand out from a game mechanical point of view. Overall      ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8/10 Music        ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8/10 Graphics   ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8/10 Gameplay ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8/10 Story         ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8/10 Difficulty ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆ (two difficulties to choose from) Updated for v1.5.7 Pros: * absolutely awesome character and world design (especially Flora…
