Sonic Origins
Developer Sonic Team
Sonic Origins is a 2022 video game compilation developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It features remasters of the first four platform games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series—Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic CD (1993), and Sonic 3 & Knuckles (1994)—originally released for the Sega Genesis and the Sega CD. The games are playable in their original format and a new widescreen… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 252 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (5,036 of 6,555 positive).
Many players say the game is a decent way to play the classics, especially with mods. [1][2][3] Several reviewers complain about replaced music in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. [4][5][6] Some players report bugs and performance issues, especially at launch. [7][8][9]

Borderline worthless due to Denuvo existing. This means no modding, playing offline, thousands of dollars which could have been used for the game itself. In turn you get worse performance, bugs, significantly long times to even open the game, frame dips in the menus. Sega delisted the original listings of old sega genesis roms replacing it with this, the only reason why I have this is for decomps/modding for other …

Making a positive review so more people see it) ONLY pick up this game when it's on sale so you can get Origins Plus pretty cheap and IMMEDIATELY install the Ultrafix Mod. It fixes a lot of the issues with this game and also the HQ OST Mods and you're all good to go. Otherwise avoid this and play other ports, buying this game on console is not a good idea.

Despite all the humming and hawing about this game in the end Sonic Origins is a perfectly fine way for most people to experience or re-experience the mainline Genesis Sonic games. It's not perfect, but for most people what's offered here will be more than enough; but that's not to say you're wrong if you expected a little more out of this. To start $40 + $13 of DLC for the complete package is a lot to ask, …

Bad at launch but it's a decent way to play the originals now. Most issues like music are ironed out with mods. Would only recommend buying it on a sale though, SEGA delisting the old games was a bad move.

The soundtrack for Carnival night, Launch base and Ice cap Zones are different. That breaks my heart so bad. The rest of the game is enjoyable

Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator website Metacritic, Sonic Origins received "mixed or average" reviews for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows, it received "generally favorable reviews" for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Zoey Handley of Destructoid felt that the compilation was lacking and lamented the lack of more substantial additions, writing: "The whole idea behind the new collection was apparently to 'modernize' the games; moving them into a new engine rather than simply emulating them. If that's the case, why stop with widescreen?" Brian Shea of Game Informer, by contrast, praised the enhancements made to the Anniversary mode, writing, "The Sonic Origins package is…

positive · AI labelView post →I bought Sonic Origins Plus to pause and play on my second screen while waiting for calls, but the performance is unacceptable. The game runs below 30 FPS, which is baffling when I can get smoother frame rates running the emulator version on a calculator. It is deeply perplexing that a 35-year-old 2D game performs so poorly on a modern PC, proving that emulation remains essential for playable performance. This lazy, unoptimized port cannot even run on hardware exponentially more powerful than…

neutral · AI labelView post →I was really enjoying it until I got to S3&K. Finding out that the music for Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base Zones were changed to very sub par renditions of the prototype music completely ruined the experience for me. Great performance aside I wouldn't recommend this to any 90's Sega Kid.

neutral · AI labelView post →Bundling the Retro Engine ports of Sonic 1, 2, and CD with a newly-commissioned port of S3&K should be a slam-dunk, easy win but thanks to a series of bizarre decisions this collection just feels half-baked. Good: - The actual games are great and the new S3&K port itself is everything I wanted it to be: the touchups to sprites, reworking the way S3 joins to S&K and stuff like new Blue Spheres stages, I truly love it. Headcannon did a great job. - The Story Mode is something I've wanted…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While it is a cute collection with animations, missions, and a coin/token system allows you to retry special stages which can be convenient... it still has a very frequent bug which kills your entire save file. Even if you take care to close the game properly, you will find just booting into the game it will not let you play until you delete the save and lose all progress. This means all of your in-game progress, missions, achievements, unlocks etc. In the process of just playing through Sonic…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Could've been a great collection, but unfortunately misses the mark in almost every category. Lots of low res art in the museum, music collection is lacking, UI is boring, Game Gear emulation is laggy, and in general the performance on PC is very inconsistent. The actual remasters themselves are just buggier versions of the mobile versions of 1, 2, and CD, with a brand new objectively worse version of Sonic 3, with lots of bugs and missing objects. The audio mixing is all over the place, none…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far, so good. A lot of the complaints are people mad about technical anti-piracy stuff I'm far too stupid to understand, so I'm reviewing this as the package you get. What is Sonic Origins? Sonic Origins is the original four (or five) Sonic games: Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD, with slight alterations in consideration of modern gaming. By default, these games are played in "Anniversary Mode," which removes lives, replaces them with coins that allow you to…

The laptop can handle the games of this collection perfectly fine, but not the menus, and that's just... ABSURD! I could BARELY get to any of the games without my laptop crashing. Yet, if I somehow was able to make it to one of the games, then I could easily play!

Today I'm going to be looking at the latest game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise: *Sonic X Shadow Generations*. This game is a 2024 remake of the 2011 game *Sonic Generations*, which itself was a modern tribute to Sonic's past games fighting against Dr. Eggman. *Side note: His name was Dr. Robotnik in the old American version of the games, but he's always been known as Dr. Eggman in the…

neutral · AI labelView post →not that anti denuvo has been removed. Game runs great, super fun. Older comments reflect when denuvo would cause lag and other nonsense which is no longer the case. Buncha QOL changes: Like in sonic 1 you can play without lives but the "lives" you collect can be used as restarts for the emerald challenges
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This collection is good if you mod it, and that's it. Base game is very subpar and not worth the price at all. Friendly reminder to people that this collection had a mostly negative rating on steam until relatively recently. The only thing that changed was more community mods coming out and fixes Sega's crappy product. The game itself didn't ever get fixed so I'm leaving a negative review
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sonic fan for more than two decades here! It's always great to see more people interested in the franchise! I would say that maybe it would be good to start with Sonic Generations (or Sonic x Shadow Generations if you can afford it, which is the same but with the Shadow The Hedgehog story as an extra), so you get familiar with the gameplay of both classic and modern games, have a sense of where it's going and decide whether to go ahead or not. I see that your interest is more focused on the…
neutral · AI labelView post →OK so if you really like the games included - just use an emulator. There's no benefit to this and the boss rushes are missing bosses. Also super inconsistent on which ones give you rings and which ones you are expected to do hitless.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, I'm not quite sure SEGA get it, so maybe it's best we spell it out a bit. People will generally buy this for nostalgia sake more than anything else and the music is part of that nostalgia. So going off and creating new music for the games which is, to put it plainly, awful, ruins the experience. I've had to stop my play-through in disgust and doubt i'll come back to this again. If you feel nostalgia, just download the originals and give this cash-grab a miss.

negative · AI labelView post →Imagine paying $60 for 4 16-bit games with no option to play with lives (how the games were originally designed to be played). [I've played a lot of this game offline, which only works for a little while before having to reconnect to the internet to satisfy Denuvo (boo!). Including Denuvo with an overpriced re-release of old games is a bit much.] Really, the only thing this collection offers that isn't provided by fan projects are some Knuckles-exclusive routes in CD and a playable Amy (which…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite frankly, the only reason I "recommend" this game is due to the fact that you can fix it with mods. Specifically the Ultrafix mod goes a long way in repairing what is otherwise the videogame equivalent of Bill Buckner's ground ball miss. Something that in theory should be impossible to f*ck up and is guranteed to result in a W, only to somehow find a way to choke it hardcore. Not to say there aren't things about it that work. The coin mechanic is an exellent way to ease new players into…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah I'm playing Sonic Mania right after wrapping up Sonic Origins, why not. By the end of S3&K I was getting a bit burned out by how those stages were a bit too long and some of the bosses are gimmicky and annoying and require waiting for a thing. So yeah I'll play a game that does more of that.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just give us the option to play classic and annaversry in 4:3 or wide screen man, Honestly i have zero clue why you locked it behind a gamemode, also please let me change my settings mid game, MANIA lets me do that why doesn't origins? negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't want to assume that the glitch would work on actual hardware/other emulators without testing, because holy fuck the game gear emulation on the Switch version of Sonic Origins Plus is dogshit. Can't maintain frame rate, constant audio glitches, it's a fucking disaster.
negative · AI labelView post →My opinions on this game are.. mixed to say the least. First I want to get something out of the way, if you are new to the Sonic franchise and games, this is the best place to start officially. This is a collection of 4 of the arguably best Sonic games ever made. That being said, as a more hardcore fan. This is a rather disappointing collection, especially compared to what the fans have created. (Sonic Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 A.I.R) The games are quite literally just the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First, I was unaware this game had denuvo drm. That should be a good reason not to buy this. When I bought this game not long after launch, I was not in my "avoid non drm free games" ark. Anyways, there isn't really a reason to play this collection, especially if you're on PC. There are multiple better ways to play all the games featured in Origins. Sonic 1, 2, and CD all have decomp ports. Sonic 3 & Knuckles can be played via A.I.R. All of these versions have better mod support compared to…

Getting past the absurd number of Labor Laws and Sanitation Regulations we're violating with that set-up, in addition to how badly this is pissing off of the union if the restaurant happens to be unionized... Most modern restaurants have dish washing machines minimizing the need for bus boys. Additionally, there's a little thing called job training that typically has to be done. You…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know people joke that Sonic is just a “hold right to win” game, but mirror mode in Sonic Origins just feels deeply unconfortable to me! It’s just… *wrong* somehow… 😅

neutral · AI labelView post →First, play Sonic Origins. This is a compilation remaster of Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, and CD, with QoL updates and widescreen. Available on all post-2013 consoles. And/or, play Sonic Mania. Often regarded as the best Sonic game *since* '94, it's also a bit easier than the classics.
