What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 260 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,823 of 4,126 positive).
Players praise the game's tense atmosphere and immersive command-line interface. [1][2][3] Many reviewers wish the game were longer, as it ends just as it gets interesting. [4][5][6] Some players find the game's depiction of self-harm poorly justified and not worth the experience. [7][8]

this is a negative review, but it's not about the length or the simple gameplay, which are both fine in a vacuum and can be actually great in the right circumstances. my problem is the way in which the game explores exactly none of itself, from story to theme to context to mechanics. (tldr: seriously do not play this if you don't want to watch a poorly-justified series of scenes describing and depicting different …

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ A+ game. My only gripe is that I wish it was longer. Way longer. The second I start understanding how to really work the terminal and find my way around, it's over. That sucks, because I was getting super into it! The atmosphere is amazing. As is the voice acting. Please, Please Mike. Make this a full thing. I will do anything.

Mike klubnika is going a generational run with his games, I dont think any game has made me feel THAT unnerved in a while. for £2.50 and around 30-60 mins of gameplay you SHOULD play. The unique feature of the game being keyboard only and in a linux command prompt make this such a unique experience too.

awesome game. the command line isn't super complicated to work with, definitely not a blocker for anyone who isn't familiar with using terminals. my only real complaints are all terminal nerd crap: 1. the game is kinda short, puzzles don't really make involved use of the shell commands 2. more involved terminal syntax doesn't work (ls can't take arguments, cd can't take absolute paths, etc) 3. the shell's line …

This game built up tension like nothing else. I wish I could pay you $100 for a full length story version of this game, it was incredible. I have historically loved the game Uplink, and never thought I'd love a hacker game more than that one, and this short game blows it out of the park, not even a question. If we got no other good games this year, but I got to experience more of the story about this diabolical …

Jessica Conditt of Engadget praised the satisfying puzzles and noted that the characters, interface, and soundtrack combined for a highly immersive experience.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It builds fear through cold design rather than jump scares. After the ending, even the desktop feels unfamiliar.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, the hardest part was trying NOT to hit Tab every single time I went to autocomplete something. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you type even slightly faster than you're supposed to by developer's opinion, the game ignores half of your keyboard input. I'm all for short games, but this disregard for QoL is laughable. The game about hacker is barely playable for RL software devs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you immerse yourself in the game, the twist is gutwrenching. Gameplay is really fun, but can be confusing if you haven't used any prompt based system before. Really good game, honestly I'm amazed.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →!!!Some spoilers ahead!!! ----------------------------------------------------- TL;DR: You could basically remove the 1-2 puzzles and make it a short movie, it would actually work better IMO. I decided not to refund in hopes of seeing some updates that this game absolutely deserves to become a true masterpiece. A difficult game to review. To me that's because it's much less of a game than a ghost train ride with minimal player interaction (let alone meaningful ones). If you have ever…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't review games but I felt obliged to after seeing the truly inane top review. Your review is nearly as long as the game, and that, indeed, is bad. You want philosophical obligement and a hermeneutic discussion on consciousness, ethics, and future-tenses? Maybe don't play a game that finishes in tens of minutes. The game itself was horrific in the best ways I can imagine, and taps into a seemingly primordial, nebulous terror of: "something bad is coming towards me fast, even if I can't see…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Possibly the most uncomfortable I've ever felt in a game. Fantastic immersive short story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For just $3, you get to spend an hour in the shoes of a version of Elliot Alderson who finds the concept of sexual intercourse foreign, but fails miserably to find hair on his scalp (we shall all be there eventually, dear reader). The balance could have been tipped from chatting toward actually using the terminal, but overall, this may be Mike Klubnika's best production to date. Play Tartarus Engine first if you want to understand the lore better. It's included in the Unsorted Horror…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing little continuation of Tartarus Engine from Unsorted Horror (I didn't realize this until later). The atmosphere and the lack of information to start with made it feel very tense. Also, although it's not for everyone, the keyboard navigation was very unique and I really liked it (coming from a Linux user and programmer, so take that as you may). Cool stuff!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →based on my Computer Science degree, this game is a....... F .ING MASTERPIECE!!! hell yeah Klubnika you did it again
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend playing Tartarus Engine from Unsorted Horror if you liked this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been on a Mike Klubnika kick this year. I've played through Unsorted Horrors, Buckshot Roulette, and now s.p.l.i.t. I've enjoyed each game, however as stated in my review of Buckshot, I couldn't help being disappointed by the game in some aspects. S.p.l.i.t. has no such concerns. I adore this game! The setting, world building, and the gameplay is all what I've come to expect of Mike. My only complaint is that I want more. I was enjoying the gameplay, a mix of working through a computer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite being very short, this game took my dumb ass way more than it should. Amazing tension. Don't read any guides, it's worth to just try to work it out by yourself.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good, but keep in mind it's a) short and b) the self-harm warning is there for a reason. Play Unsorted Horror as a complement to this title.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very easy and short game. Took me about 70 minutes to get both endings, but it probably would’ve been faster if I wasn’t so confused at the beginning. The story was actually pretty nice though and the atmosphere was really good. Honestly my only complaint is that I wish it was longer because I enjoyed it more than I expected and was dissapointed it was already over.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Booting into Linux, opening Steam, just to launch a command-line simulation — 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite short but interesting gameplay and worldbuilding. The ending was one of the most terrifying/distressing things i've experienced in my life.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game got a reaction out of me.. id say its a pretty good game. Wish it was longer.... it litterally just got interesting and boom.. over...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Self Perpetuating Lobotomy Induced Trust (?) Absolutely incredible game. But so incredibly short Fair warning: if you don't have at least a cursory knowledge of how to read and use UNIX/DOS terminals, this game might end up a bit difficult. But is doable if you are willing to learn and persevere. The themes are quite heavy, and the story is confusing without context from another game, but it is an immaculate experience for the maybe 1 hour of playtime that exists.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SPLIT is a hacking-themed psychological horror game from the developer of Buckshot Roulette and many other unsettling shorts on Itch. It is every bit as grimy as you'd expect from Mike Klubnika.
neutral · AI labelView post →♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ i loved this haha. maybe one of my favourite uses of mechanical gameplay in recent years, the keyboard exclusive format does so much for immersion and tactile gamefeel. ♥♥♥♥ had me sweating a bit. doing a hacking game that isnt some bs minigame thing and actually digging through command lines and file systems is really cool to see and super gratifying to crack. i get if youre like some uber-nerd that might not be all that out there but uh, i'm not that, so i thought it was dope.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was more Split is a fantastic short experience which as someone who frequently uses the terminal is a surprisingly accurate simulation of it. The gameplay vaguely reminds me of hacknet but with a more low level twist, your gameplay consists of moving between monitors and devices to check on information with some really cool very classic hack inspired puzzles. The game's artstyle and music are also genuinely fantastic, the sound design really helps build the tension for what is at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have read many reviews complaining about the briefness of this game. And it is true: You can complete it in less than an hour. Yet it never claimed to be anything else. It's exactly what it says on the tin: a short game. It is also true that there is a lot of straightforwardness and linearity to the story. With the masterful atmosphere Kublinka is known for, you genuinely WANT there to be more. You want the game to challenge you further, to give you more to do, more to uncover, and more ways…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short but impactful experience, very creative. It can be a bit confusing if you are not used to linux terminals I guess, you will have to treat it as a puzzle and go through the help command. Worth the price and the time
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exactly what I want from a horror game. Not scary but pressing and nauseating without cheesy jumpscares or needless adrenaline.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game builds a beautifully unsettling atmosphere, and I really liked how the ending cutscene showed a glimpse into the game's world. Preferable to play at night, in the dark. Also no jumpscares, still works like a charm, incredibly done.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really interesting and unique horror experience. The worldbuilding and atmosphere are probably the best parts of the game and I really liked how the story is told through the environment and the different details you can find. The gameplay can be pretty confusing at times, especially if you don't have much experience with this kind of stuff, but overall it's definitely worth checking out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool little game, amazing atmosphere and tension. Incredibly short however, i probably could have finished it faster if i wasn't such a dumbass.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In s.p.l.i.t you try to hack into and destabilize the power core of a highly corrupt government with two buddies using old school console interface. Was a pretty short but interesting game and it replicated the console interface really well, this must be how it feels to use Linux. The game does have a pretty grim atmosphere and really sells you on the hopelesness of the world your character inhabits. One big positive from me is that although the game has two endings which diverge only at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Klubnika is a genius in creating a unique atmosphere through color, the engine he picked and vibes in general. This story/ hacking game is no miss.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This feels like the prologue to a larger game. An excellent prologue, but nevertheless not quite a full experience. Had the game been more expensive the ending would have had me expecting a title drop and opening credits. It's very short. Given that it's significantly cheaper than a movie ticket, I don't mind all that much, but I was hoping for something bigger and more complete. The downside of being a short nearly-story-only game cheaper than a movie ticket is that if I had watched a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a pretty cool experience and for 3 bucks its a great deal! You'll be spending your time here strapped to a chair navigating DOS which may be a tad challenging if you don't have any experience with this kind of stuff, It's a lot more streamlined here then the actual thing so I'm sure you can figure it out. The story is also quite good, the world this game take place in is rather interesting and leaves you with a lot of questions by the time the credits roll. The music, atmosphere,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short but great game. There's a slight learning curve with the hacking but it's worth it. I recommend it if you like horror, hacking, thrillers, etc SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER: both endings are very emotionally heavy and involve fatal self-harm. if this bothers you I advise you don't play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MIKE KLUBNIKA THE MAN THAT YOU ARE to be serious, i came into this game with ... i would say moderate knowledge of computers, but no coding or hacking experience. i decided not to check any guides and just brute force my way through, and i absolutely loved it. this ♥♥♥♥ rocks. my only complaint is that it's not a longer, feature-length game. i don't care about the price, i would have easily paid more for the experience i got - i just love the vibe, the story, the mechanics (once i got the hang…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a positive review but theres honestly not much positive to say about this game, and thats because theres simply not much to it. SO the positive: - The atmosphere and plot are well established from the jump - The artstyle, audio, and overall presentation are solid And thats about all honestly? If you have any triggers around self-harm or suicide or its discussion definitely avoid this one, its quite blunt in its portrayal and it feels more like shock content than anything profound or…

neutral · AI labelView post →Easily the best Arch Linux install simulator out there. I just wish it was longer. The lore is confusing but kinda captivating and I really enjoyed it overall. Not very replayable, but the first run is tough as hell since you probably have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue what you're doing 😁

neutral · AI labelView post →Very cool, short game. Definitely worth the small asking price. Nice soundtrack, neat gameplay, and a really compelling story. Above and beyond for a $3 game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Turn you lights off, mute all notifications type game. Give yourself about an hour (play time will depend on your experience with Terminal/CMD prompts, but don't fear, you will figure it out). Deeply unsettling. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its not that good as the reviews say tbh. I got the story and the world they are in but its a bit too short to be called a "short" game. There is no huge plot twist or huge worldbuilding as the reviews say. It finished way faster to be called a huge plot twist. To me the reviews here are biased. If there was a bit info about the background and the story it would have been worth to play it otherwise its not worth the full price. I spent 40-50 mins extra on puzzles cuz of a dumb mistake otherwise…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a excellent horror game and definately worth the like 5 bucks It's this short experience in uneasiness, rush, discomfort and horror. However, read the content warning, they are not kidding about that ♥♥♥♥.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as a cybersecurity specialist with mental issues, I liked this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worth checking out, try not looking into guides - the game is short enough to avoid it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In this new Dev Dive interview, I talked to @mikeklubnika.bsky.social, the creator of the viral hit Buckshot Roulette, who gave me exclusive access to the story behind his next game. It's a totally bizarre command prompt hacking thriller called S.P.L.I.T. #gamedev youtu.be/Q608LadLXx0
neutral · AI labelView post →Just wish the hacking part was longer, just when I felt I was finally understanding it, it was over. Definitely not bloated, all the files i found that were not necessary to progress were empty and the dialogue is very intentional and minimal. One of the reasons I had gotten this game was for some of the lore hidden in the files, so when I go back for the second ending I'll snoop about for those. So worth buying, especially for the price. Just wish it was longer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't remember when I got the game or why I got it, but I'm not disappointed in the past me. For being a very short game, it has that something that makes you want to know about the story and what is happening. I really hope that this plot can be continued in possible future games ;)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →mental. i hope mike elaborates on the other entries in unsorted horror as well.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why do I feel a bit ashamed reading your reviews and seeing how fast everyone beat this game? I felt like I took a little longer than most, but I really took my time and didn't use any guides at all—which honestly made it so much more exciting to figure out on my own. As for the game itself, 10/10! It really made me live the moment. It's just a shame that right when I finally got the hang of the controls and adapted to everything, it ended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is difficult to understand but worth sticking through. First and foremost this game is about typing commands into a terminal. As someone who doesn't have to do this it was difficult to get around and very confusing. Maybe this is the point and I would say if that turns you off don't get it. I think it does add to the vibe and is worth perservering through if you have the patience to do so. The ending is very intense and involves brain stuff which for me if I had known would be enough…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting game, and worth the price, the ending is the best part for sure. I probably wouldn't of recommended this if it was any more expensive though, its very short and light on content.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a short yet difficult game, at least for me since I am pretty slow! I recommend it, I would say that the game looks like it would last hours because it's quite hard. But it lasts less than 2 hours to get both endings, I didnt got a refund obviously because it's good! Well, at any rate I felt a good feeling playing this game! Like I was getting smarter >v< Well well I am just noyurii bye bye!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very cool story, the atmosphere was amazing and although I already have enough terminal experience so it wasn't hard it was very fun working around the workspace. I wish there was a tab autocompletion and if the story was longer it'd be a great 10/10. I won't be refunding this because I would really like to see more works like this! Great job and to everyone reading you should try it out.
