I *really* wanted to like this, but the combat is pretty lame and to make the hoverboard mechanic more fun (more speed) you have to constantly detach from it to farm resources to craft new components using a system that feels more complicated than it needs to be. I am begging games with cool movement mechanics to stop trying to make me detach from the cool movement mechanics.

This is a legit short (positive thing) open-world that adds some new fresh element to the BOTW/TOTK formula, keeping a very strong identity on its own. The overboard alone is worth the ticket, exploration is excellent and relaxing, crafting is not deep but rewarding and combat is surprisingly dynamic. I'm so sorry that this game will never be known from the big public, it's a shame because this is truly an indie Hidden Gem at the moment and it deserves way more than this. It is not a perfect game, yes, but it comes very close to it and I found here stuff that I never found in any other game. Star Overdrive is so much bigger than I expected. If you played the demo, just know that it only hints at what the full game has to offer. The world opens up in a major way, with a sense of scale and exploration that really surprised me. The atmosphere is incredible. The soundscape fits the vast and lonely setting perfectly. Put on your headphones and let the original soundtrack pull you in. It completely transforms the experience. The hoverboard riding is a blast. It feels smooth right from…

I'll start with something positive: The game looks nice, and the hoverboard feels great to control, it's fun to ramp off the hills and get a huge boost. To be honest, the idea of Breath Of The Wild with a hoverboard is a fun concept on paper.... but the execution... The rest of the game though is very undercooked. The music sounds like generic_rock.mp3 (when there's music). The combat is attrocious, you bounce around way too much and everything feels so slow! The Shrine levels are way too big…

After playing some more, I'm changing this to a positive review. I wish steam had a neutral option... I'll leave most of my negative review below because I think it's fair but I cannot deny how much fun I had with the game when I finally grinded out enough of the Shrines to upgrade my character and just went out into the world to ride around and explore. The TL;DR here is: the core loop of "ride, explore, upgrade board, explore better" IS fun. However, it feels like a lot of the upgrades…

Star Overdrive is a game I have... mixed feelings about, like. It's good! It's... not as good as it should be, and there's a lot of small -and- big reasons why. I'll start with the positives - for one, the game oozes style and charm. Colorful cartoony graphics and beautiful landscapes, all set to an enjoyable Van Halen pastiche - the entire game is infused with a love for music and it's an utter delight. And the opening hours are just, constant joy. Some lovely environmental platforming,…

Nice game, great visuals and very smooth controls (playing with gameplad). The puzzles are a cool variation and in general I like how the pace of this game constantly changes from super fast races to relaxing moments of puzzles/platforming explotarion. I'll keep playing and I'll update the review once finished. A small great surprise of 2025!

A deeply flawed but wonderful game. Note that I played the demo for almost 3 hours and progress transferred across, so my actual play time at review was almost exactly 8 hours. Platforming is unnecessarily punishing when it really a matters. Anybody as old as me may remembers the 'pixel-perfect precision' required by some 8-bit platformers. There really is no need for this. Dying 4 or 5 times trying to make a crucial jump because there is literally no room for error is not fun. The overall…

A game that chose to be a meh action fighting game, and a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ platformer. All of the actual progression of the game is made by zelda like puzzles, all requiring platforming which is something the game does not excel at. The more you progress the more you spend your time platforming. I want to like this game, but it's constantly ruining its own fun. If you want a game that is a fun hoverboard game this isn't it. In an industry with so many open world games it's hard to stand out, especially as an indie game. Star Overdrive is probably the most unique one I have ever played. The hoverboard traversal and the musical theming is so refreshing, I spent most of my time just riding around the world doing tricks in the air, and listening to the amazing soundtrack. The customization of the hoverboard is also 10/10. I loved the different designs and I just couldn't stop changing it every hour or so because I…

I just finished the campaign and I've got to say this is probably one of the best games I have ever played. I was never really a huge BOTW fan mostly because having to cross a large open empty world on foot or by horse. However, this game takes that formula, makes you that kid from Treasure Planet, so that you can ride a hover board on Arrakis with 80's metal music playing in the background. Sounds cool right? You can tell that the Devs put there heart and soul into this game and delivered an…

I played the demo some time ago and have been waiting for the full release. At times, it reminds me of the latest Zelda games, but it sets itself apart with one key element: the hoverboard. Traveling through the desert on a hoverboard is already very satisfying, but the ability to customize the board completely won me over. The board’s aesthetics are fantastic and upgrading it as the game progressed made it feel like the hoverboard was truly something I had built myself. Even the combat, which…

I really want to like it, but it's in a severely rough state. Soft locks where you get stuck in level geometry and you can't get out unless you exit to main menu then enter the game again, reseting your progress by the way. Grammar errors throughout the entire game. Mechanics that are poorly explained. Weird, janky mechanics that feel experimental, rather than fully fleshed out. The entire game feels like it needed more time in the oven. I can see the devs had ambition, but ambition alone…

I’ll admit I was skeptical at first: some praise this game, but it flew so far under the radar I didn’t know what to expect. Then I tried the demo… and wow. This game blew me away. It’s like someone took the open-ended exploration of Breath of the Wild, added a healthy dose of real, satisfying action, and strapped it all onto a hoverboard. The result is a thrilling, fluid, and deeply immersive experience that somehow isn’t being talked about nearly enough. If you’re on the fence, try the…

Prepare to be disappointed. An idea of racing around on an alien planet with a hoverboard sounds cool, and at times it is, but theres about all there is positive to this game. The story is pretty meh, you're trying to rescue your GF, and its mostly just finding videos of her talking for a bit and thats the entire story. Theres 4 boss fights, 3 of which are super gimmicky and dumb, the final is decent. Combat is pretty janky and meh, you unlock a bunch of abilities but most are just used for…

Take a bit of time to get the rhythm of the hoverboard right, but it becomes a very satisfying cruise around the map once you get the muscle memory down. Sure, it lacks some of the polish of a AAA but they get pretty damn close to knocking it out. Hover-boarding around feels incredible and the sense of speed is really felt. Navigating the world aboard your Overdrive is AMAZING!!! Moving around, gaining speed, and learning how to take advantage of the map’s layout to optimize your routes... This game is rad as heck. I genuinely like this more than Breath of the Wild or Tear of the Kingdom. The hover board fixes alot of the open world problems by just letting you do cool tricks, jump high and far of ramps and dunes, and go absurdly fast. The puzzles are overall very good, and make use of the abilities they give you. Speaking of which, the abilities you get are all really good, and they all have uses not just in puzzles, but also on hoverboard, and even in combat. The combat itself…

Its fun going around on the hoverboard. That's the main hook with most of it's design being lifted from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. So you will know what you are getting into.

Star Overdrive is an ambitious sci-fi action-adventure that places freedom of movement at the center of its identity, building an experience that feels driven by speed, momentum, and atmosphere rather than constant combat or dense storytelling. From the outset, the game establishes a sense of mystery as the protagonist is drawn to an unfamiliar alien world in search of a missing partner, only to find himself stranded on a vast and often lonely planet. Rather than overwhelming the player with…

Takes a little bit of time to get into and it doesn't always hold your hand but the movement is super fun - could do with a few more characters but a stellar game!

if you like the exploration and solving puzzle segments in zelda Botw, this is the game for it, with more special abilities bigger bigger maps and faster traversal, essentially octane version of that segment in botw,

Great game with interesting physics based abilities. Visuals and music go well together.

I think there's a lot of unrealized potential here, mainly in areas of combat and level/puzzle design, but riding the hoverboard feels great and I'm desperate for Treasure Planet - type stuff so I quite enjoyed this.

(NOTE: This brief review is not based on a full completion of the game, as I'm currently stuck on some story puzzles and don't know how to get further for the time being. I've spent 27-ish hours on the game.) I really enjoyed the momentum from the skating around across the planet! It was easily the thing I liked most about the game, especially with trying to figure out how to incorporate some of the powers into doing more advanced tricks. However, I kinda wish there were more types of…

I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. I haven't played much Breath of the Wild but this does give that kind of vibe a bit. Very very much an open-world-a-thon, you pretty quickly zoop around on your hoverboard over a pretty big map and complete puzzle-platformy towers to unlock underground hoverboard-less dungeons which are also very puzzle platformy. Some of those give you new abilities like a bouncy platform or grapple beam thingy. It took a little getting used to what the game was…

I refunded it, for now, but still recommend, if you don't mind these three caviats: 1. Sounddesign is rough (sounds are too loud and don't feel integrated into the world) 2. Janky floaty movement, way too slow at the beginning of the game (later a bit better) 3. Combat and combat animations are clunky I will pick it up again after some improvements were made. Sci Fi Breath of the Wild with a trick-based hoverboard system, pretty awesome tbh.
