What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 171 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (3,737 of 6,767 positive).
Many reviewers express deep disappointment, noting the game had great potential but was never finished. [1][2][3] Some players still recommend the game, hoping for open-sourcing or dedicated servers to keep it alive. [4][5][6]

I wish, I wish, I wish. They'd just kept improving this. I remember how hyped i was for this game in 2021, it was amazing. But I couldn't recommend it now. IT was THE space game. Literally had everything you'd want ever. So so sad they had to abandon it because of funding. Will they ever get the funding to continue development please please do so. I will recommend this game to not overwhelm the developers with even …

The devs have stated they aren't going to work on this game anymore. It never left early access and this store page even says it's an Alpha build. It hasn't been updated in over 3 years so the fact it's still for sale for $35 is insane. The only reason this page is still up is to scam people who didn't do there research. DO NOT BUY.

Starbase is one of the most amazing video game experiences I have ever witnessed and I have been playing video games since 1985. Starbase caught lighting in a bottle with the star ship creator editor, single shard universe, the music, and the coding language Yolol. The SSC provides an amazing depth of capability to build a ship from the bolts up. Nothing in a video game even compares that I have seen. The concept of …

It's been a while since I last played this game. Writing this review feels a little like writing an obituary for someone who had a promising future. As far as space sim games go, this one had the best setting and game mechanics. You could build your own unique space ship or buy one already created. The building mechanics felt complicated to a newbie like myself and they were buggy too, but I could see the vision of …

Abandoned game. Devs stopped communicating, updates dried up, and what’s left is a bug-ridden game with a dead playerbase. Tons of promised features never delivered. If you’re hoping for a real MMO or fresh content, look elsewhere. Starbase is a graveyard.

It’s something you live. From day one, I was mining rocks in a starter ship barely held together by bolts, dreaming of building something greater. Years later, I’ve designed fleets, built modular factories in orbit, fought in massive PvP wars, and written…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Typical Early Access games. Promising the world, delivering very little. I really wish the "Early Access" tag was 75% off from their estimated full release price AND could be refunded anytime until 1.0/out of early access happens. That would solve the entire problem with these failed games. Now we don't own anything.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The company behind the card game announced plans to build “a grand monument” to Musk on the parcel of land it owns near Starbase, Texas, with the aim to “make him wonder, for a brief moment, ‘Wait, am I a sad little bitch with no friends?’”

positive · AI labelView post →This game always goes on sale because they have to appease their "investors". Do not buy, no matter how many users purchase this game, it will not go towards any further development. They are working on another Trine game. This has been officially confirmed by the dev team as being abandonware. I was a day 1 buyer, I made the mistake of trusting this studio. That was my mistake, don't make the same mistake I did. Any Early Access game has no obligation of updating or releasing their game. There…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steam really shouldn't allow this game to go on sale given that it it is unplayable abandonware.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is abandonware, the last word from the devs was back in 2024. Steam is wrong to lure players into buying this game with a sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still in EA after 4 years and no updates in almost 6 months... game is most likely abandoned. Terribly disappointing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →@ Frozenbyte Please open-source this software. You can even do it in a way that enables commercial forks. When/if you are ever able to return and continue development, you can then re-fork and provide copies to those who have bought your game. If not, the code will at least be out there. This is better than the game being dead, and you will receive goodwill from the community and even prospective players for doing this and this being part of your story.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Development has been paused for a long time, then the devs came back for a short time, now it's dead again. Since there hasn't been any news on any channels known to me, I assume it has finally been abandoned.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The projected emissions from "Starbase, Louisiana" are staggering for a single facility. It's as if the tech bros are all playing a secret game of "hold my beer" as they burn the atmosphere to fund an escape to Mars. Mass collective delusions are not uncommon in cults.
neutral · AI labelView post →I got it shortly after launch, and the game was nothing like we were promised. Now it's abandoned. Save your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trust me, I absolutely wanted to love this game but with the multiple of years of radio silence from the developers its impossible to recommend and would consider it dead Even after last years "were not dead :D" video they have given us one (1) SINGULAR update and nothing since I want to change this review but I don't think I will. EDIT: I'm trying to refund this game for abandonment, lets see how it goes EDT2: Steam will not refund you
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SCAM + ABANDONED + NEVER BUY FROM FROZENBYTE
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i wish this game was singleplayer coop or server based like other games and these building mechanics and complexity but with single player survival with modded systems would be way better do not buy this game no updates no information
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another abandoned cash grab. Steam need to develop a method of blocking abandoning devs from ever pitching another game here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this could be the best space game out.....if they did anything with it....its dead now
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is dead now, and it is a shame. Could have been something awesome.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Starbase is a game with a great foundation that really has substantial gaps that get in the way of having a good time, and the devs have not solved those problems since this game went Early Access multiple years ago (from when I am writing this, today being June 27 2025). I bought this game when it entered Early Access, and yeah there were huge bugs, which the devs fixed, and then I had a whole bunch of fun. At that point the game was rather busy and plenty of people playing, it was great!…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't even play the game anymore, and the developers have both gone silent and refused to admit that the game is abandoned; they literally have a picture on their discord of 4 machines daisychained together with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FUNERAL CANDLE on top of them. I've requested multiple refunds due to their lack of communications and the fact that updates committed almost 21 months ago broke my ability to connect, despite still (somehow) keeping a player base of 10+ players. Do. NOT. Buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanna see this game thrive but the devs haven't touched the main build in over 3 years and they're not active on the discord, I just don't see the game coming back anytime soon.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game that needs to be kept alive. Would love to see dedicated servers released to keep this game from dying all the way. RELEASE THE DEDICATED SERVER AND LET THIS GAME COME BACK!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandonware. Dead game. The fact that steam allows to buy this game and even offers sale is just a scam/fraud.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This could have been the best game that ever was and ever will be... it simply didn't attract enough numbers to ever realise its potential. Why is that? Many have opinions on why, but I believe it comes down to 3 core issues: - The complexity: The game is a complicated masterpiece. Whilst some people find appeal in the Yolol coding and intricate ship building, many find it a turn off as their free time is a commodity they cannot part with easily. This has given rise to the CoD's, Megabonks,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the game for years. Left of a lot of treasures for people to find since the development team stopped working on the game for now. I wouldn't say any of my time playing this was a waste of time because no matter what I had a great time playing with my best friend brother and friend, Glux. If it wasnt for him I wouldn't have played as much. Anyway I really hope the game continues cause I really think this game has a lot of promise. You can build ships, built space stations, build moon…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →like everyone else is pointing out, game is more or less abandoned and dead as well. honestly i dont even like MMOs, not sure why i got this, and i cant really provide any valuable opinions on this game because of my disdain for games that do not allow hosting your own servers, but i can say with confidence that it is dead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really sad to see this game die. I only had about 8 hours in years ago, was hoping it would take off and add more content; I checked in regularly. I guess I'm finally hopeless for this title. Sad as the design was cool, super atmospheric and vibey. The ship building was really cool. Really a shame it never got adequate funding and the player base it deserved.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Money I will never get back. The game has been dead for a few years now. Steam, please, just take it off the platform already, it's unplayable in this state and it should be considered a scam to charge money for it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →would be better if it was single player
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →abandoned, left to rot. get space engineers instead of this piece of ♥♥♥♥
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this game. The devs abandoned it 3 years ago. I don't know why it's still listed in the store. I don't know why devs bother putting the game on sale, feels like a huge disrespect to put on sale an abandoned game just to see if someone will be dumb enough to buy it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Devs abandoned this game don’t bother
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →came back after a few years to check on it and the other reviews are all true; this game is abandoned and the content that does exist is either buggy, nonfunctional or straight up not fun. back when it release me and some buddies thought this could be a replacement to space engineers after we had a falling out with a public server admin and boy were we wrong save your money, if you want a space building sandbox go play space engineers and support the development of Space Engineers 2
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Come back devs :(
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not support this game. Do not support this company. Game studios that put money before passion do not deserve to exist.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly the best space game on the market, no other games don't even come close in terms of depth. But at the same time, the devs had shown no signs of life for over two years by the time of writing, and at this point it's safe to say they've left it to die, and us along with it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game had an quite unique ideea, very nice building mechanics, strucutral integrity, large structure, large universe but due to objective factors it was discontinued. Sadly its fate is sealed for now with no end of tunnel in sight. Maybe the devs can give this game to comunity to mod it and rescue what can be saved
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has been the one game i have seen the most potential with the worst execution. i purchased on release. yes it was buggy but there were players. we had pvp and we had exploration. i didnt even mind flying 2 or 3 HOURS to get from point A to point B at the time to find the good ore. made it more valuable and there was real risks to go get it. but failed patch after failed patch. and added content that wasnt even remotely ready to be pushed out not being fixed before pushing another…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it was a awesome game but now that the developers have dropped the game we all should get a refund since it was a great game but it is dead now unfortunatly.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had a cool concept but the devs decided that they didn't want to work on this game anymore, with no transparent communication about why. It is utterly unfinished and what should be considered a spectacle of early access scams. I have no faith in Frozenbyte to finish this game and the fact they are running a sale on it while it has not been updated in years speaks for itself. This game was a simple cash grab and nothing more for them. Do not support this dev in the future and do not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hyped up for so long just to see the death of game right on the launch. This is the definition of the worst Early Access investment. Don't buy this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Starbase had incredible potential — a beautiful world, deep engineering systems, and a sense of scale that few space games ever reach. But sadly, it feels abandoned. Updates have slowed to a crawl, and the community is shrinking. It’s hard to recommend in its current state, but if it ever sees a true revival, I’d come back in a heartbeat.

neutral · AI labelView post →Though the game has been abandonned, it is still in my opinion the most detailed ship building game ever. It is rough around the edges and difficult to learn, but after a while I was able to pimp my ship, add whatever elements I wanted, wire everything up, program it and fly away! Easy build is bad because it's buggy and quite limited, but ship editor and in game building are fantastic in my opinion. You must however be patient to place everything correctly, weld the beams, bolt and wire the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yes. I still have hope. Customized controls, space mechanics are good. Right now it's about what kind of content the developer's want to focus on. This is pre-alpha for all intent and purposes. As many has said about its issues the real issue is there isn't a lot to do except build and mine and maybe build a base. Yes I know players can fight other players and it is supposed to have a player driven economy. However everyone can eventually grind up all the build skills. Except for…
