What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 261 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (28,390 of 34,242 positive).
Many complain about Ubisoft's online requirements, DLC locks, and server issues. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note region-locked languages and lack of English in certain areas. [4][5]

No English language option available for our region (CIS/Georgia) — only Russian and Simplified Chinese. English files are completely cut from the game files. Unbelievable region lock in 2026. Refunded.

Still the best ski/snowboard game ten years later. Not “one of the best.” Not “good for its age.” The best. And before anyone shows up talking about “realistic sims,” let me stop you: Steep isn’t a sim. Steep is what happens when an arcade game, a travel documentary, and a mid‑life crisis decide to go heli‑skiing together. But here’s the real kicker: Steep is so good it made me angry. Angry that Ubisoft looked at …

Really good game, Ubisoft absolutely nailed the graphics and the music is so chill. Only thing that sucks is Ubisoft's DLC/microtransaction ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 💀 Bought Gold Edition, got no DLC and had to refund it and bought the base game instead.. Still recommend the game tho.

✅ Open world snowy mountains to explore with a very atmospheric feeling ✅ Challenges are satisfying to complete ✅ Graphics is pretty good ✅ Relaxing game to play ❌ Online only game. If server gets shut down the game will become permanently unplayable ❌ Can't change soundtrack ❌ Can't pause during riding. Pausing instantly restarts the run ❌ Many contents are locked behind DLCs

Underrated game, but regardless of how good a game is, making a singleplayer game online only should be a crime.

Players who liked Steep™ talk about beautiful graphics and relaxing atmosphere; those who didn't talk about online-only with server issues and forced Uplay. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Steep received "mixed or average" reviews, according to Metacritic. While critics generally lauded the game's vast open world and enjoyable activities, critics also pointed out its lack of direction and overall scope, with critique also being directed at its always-online concept. In February 2019, Ubisoft announced that Steep was played by 10 million individual players. Matthew Kato of Game Informer awarded the game a positive review. While he was initially wondering if a game solely centered on extreme sports and a vast open world would capture the players, he found Steep to be very captivating through its open world, gameplay, and atmosphere. He called the "volume of challenges [...]…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're picking this up specifically to play with a friend, don't bother, it doesn't work like that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's OK and arcade-y fun, but the end game is locked behind micro transactions / DLC so don't expect a full game for the price, sadly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not try the game tricks IRL. You are not that good. Trust me speaking from experience :d

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thumbs Down Paid for the game, can’t even play it. Ubisoft account creation/sign-in does not work, and the game is completely locked behind it. If a required launcher breaks, the game is useless. Unacceptable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is good to just ♥♥♥♥ around in and have fun ridding down mountains Still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate ubisoft tho
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Refuses to connect to servers and there is no way to exit the game while its failing to connect. I am unable to start the game despite having a solid internet connection, and I have to force-exit from it every time. Going to try and get a refund.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I sincerely recommend this game to y'all because it's the best extreme sports game I have ever played in my life. There are some cons regarding the game design and some bad decisions in terms of checkpoint locations in the missions. I'd like to remove the Ubisoft stuff because it's sometimes distracting, and I don't want to see unknown HUD notifications. I'm used to seeing Steam notifications, and that's enough for me. I love the snowy atmosphere. It's really beautiful when the snow…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horrible, Ubisoft for some reason thinks that Georgia is China or Russia, therefore only available languages are Chinese and Russian. Despite all my efforts and trying all the possible ways I still could not switch the language to English so I deleted the game. I don't recommend buying this game if your region is anywhere else but from EU or NA and you don't speak Russian and Chinese.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game about downhill runs on skis, snowboards, sleds, and wingsuits. The game exceeded my expectations. The only downside is that a lot of content is unavailable in the base version of the game, including sleds. For those who value their bones and don't want a broken spine or neck, it's better to play this game and not try this stuff in real life. I say this from personal experience: when I was younger, I used to go downhill on sleds too, and once I flew out of one and narrowly avoided…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steep is the game where I start skiing like a pro, then somehow end up tumbling down a mountain, flying off a cliff, and somehow surviving just to do it again. Wingsuits make me feel like a superhero until I slam into a tree, and snowboarding tricks are half style, half accidental chaos. Beautiful, ridiculous, and completely addictive.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GIVE ME SNOWBiRD!!! Steep isn’t about racing for records—it’s a chill yet addictive journey through the winter Alps, packed with opportunities to experiment and express yourself on the slopes. Here’s a quick rundown on why the game’s worth checking out: • The open-world Alps are made with love: vast snowy plains, slopes, gorges, and sheer ridges give you that real freeride feeling and make you want to explore just for the views and the vibe. • Variety of disciplines: skiing, snowboarding,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i bought this game for one dollar and 50 cents, and i still think i should've been paid to play, the Ubisoft UI is trash, the social club ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is trash, Ubisoft ruins every single good idea they have with their horrible systems.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't even finish tutorial if you play with controller. Even after tutorial, setting up the input bind for controller is a pain in the ass. Very unfortunate since it seems like a really good sit on your couch game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gotta deal with the ubisoft bs, but the game is fun to mess around in when youre bored. Id give it a 84/100
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fly 200mph into a rock and get back up, put on a jetpack try to fly but just flys into a rock Very fun game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game on PlayStation when it came out. Nice to play it on a better machine. Still the best snow boarding and skiing game. I also have rider republic, but if you like a more realistic feel this is the one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I need to replay the tutorial but game doesn't allow it hence i won't recommend it until they change this because idk how to play it. other than that the game is great, not very many games that allow snowboarding. would refund it but i want to play this game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2016 game that still looks and feels amazing, still unbeatable to this day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Fell from atleast 400 feet, picked up my skis and continue skiing like nothing happened.* what a grate game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game does not work properly with a controller. I'm sure you can get it to work, but i shouldn't have to remap controls and edit settings to make my xbox controller usable, especially when it clearly recognizes it uses the xbox controller symbols. I can move around in game fine, no issue with the gameplay whatsoever, but the menus are unusable. As soon as you go into a menu the controller becomes unresponsive and you are forced to use a keyboard. Seems likes a great game, controller…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good chill game and graphics still hold today
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Converted my save from Ubisoft to play with a bit better control features. Steep is an absolutely amazing game. It might be a touch dated graphically these days, but even then it still looks fantastic and gives off a great sensation of being in the mountains. And the mountains are awesome in this game. Quite a nice variety with TONS of different ways to play the game. Jetpacks, wingsuits, skis, snowboards, et cetera. It's all here in mostly great quality. Not too much I can rat on this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →great game, cool visuals, very chill got me reminiscing about the slopes i wanna go snowboarding again...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Be Careful - That first steps a doosey. Surfers Code surf game and game game too. Wishlist it on steam. #indiegame #indiedev #screenshotsaturday #surfing #steep
positive · AI labelView post →I like this game! It's insanely beautiful and very detailed. There are many cool tricks to learn and winter sports to try. But I didn't like the rocket wingsuit and paragliding, they are triggering my motion sickness. I just do wingsuit, ski, and snowboard. There are 2 different locations Alaska and Swiss Alps, both are just a 10/10 eye candy. The cinematic cuts are stunning! As someone who lives near the equator, this game is a daydream. Because I know there's no way I'll be able to do any of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ubisoft is very insensitive by limiting this game in --Ukraine-- to be playable only in Chinese and Russian. I get it that they have some limits with licensing, but there are definitely much better solutions than this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game it self is fun. Sometimes it feels a bit poorly since its a console game. Graphics are great for a game that launched in 2016. The DLC's aren't worth a single penny. 7/10 "/8\ if the menu didn't suck balls"
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For all the Eastern European bros out there who are forced into Russian language region lock you can add one more dollar (on discount) and buy x-games gold edition which will let you play your game in English.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- within the first 10 minutes i get ingame ad to buy a DLC - always online connection to UBISOFT servers required, disconecting returns you to menu - they should have mark the game as "Controller required to play this game" as having to use AWSD and IJKL at the same time is absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I would not even consider this game if I knew this beforehand. I tried getting around that with some clever keybinding, but the controlls are split into many categories, and there is always something…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is the best game to just relax to or burn time or play while watching something in the background honestly i cant find a single flaw
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →super awesome atmosphere. dont have a lot of playtime its all on my ps5 but im trying to play more on steam deck. very beautiful and fun to play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The problems getting this game just to work are unreal there are some really bad connection issues getting on to the servers I just cant get on so I can only say dont bother
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bought game for two bucks, it opened up ubisoft launcher, i closed game after not being able to use my controller for some reason. I hate you Ubisoft
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ever since Skate 3, nothing has really scratched that itch for me. Modern games usually miss the point—they clutter the screen with menus, force you into stressful leaderboards, or just try way too hard. This is the first game in over a decade that actually gets it. My favorite thing about it has nothing to do with high scores or completing tasks. It’s those nights where it's 1:00 AM, the house is quiet, and my brain is totally cooked from the day. I don't want to think. I don't want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love it, very 'open world' for exploration, or instant quick action and fun :O
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Opened the game and ended up playing for 2.8 hours and started streaming in the middle of it. Pretty nice game, rare ubisoft W
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worst Launch possibly imagine, doesn't save and unable to connect server.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the tutorial, was excited to play, only to find out multiplayer was MANDATORY. I’ve never heard of that for a game that could work perfectly well with a single player option. This might not be a big deal to some, but I just wanted to experience the game without other people, and that’s not possible for some strange reason. As for the gameplay, I guess it’s alright, just be ready to clip into other people.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really good relaxing gameplay. Great for when you're tired or don't know what else to play. Just pop on some tunes and send it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steep – Pure Snowboarding Freedom Steep is an absolute blast for anyone who enjoys snowboarding or just loves the feeling of freedom in an open world. From the moment you drop into the mountains, the game captures that exhilarating sense of carving through fresh snow and pulling off smooth lines down massive slopes. What makes Steep so enjoyable is how natural and fluid everything feels. Whether you’re casually cruising down a mountain or attempting tricks and challenges, the controls are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good game got on sale for 5 bucks but it lowkey gets boring after a min
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dont buy the gold edition of this game. The DLC does not work on steam and by the time you notice Steam wont let you return it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun game with beautiful mountains and a great vibe. Snowboarding and exploring never gets old. Definitely worth playing if you love extreme sports! 🎿
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is riddled with content behind dlc paywalls and the good parts of it that remain aren't even that polished. I was giving ubisoft a chance because of the steep 95% discount (pun intended?) but I don't even want to have this embarrassment in my library, regardless of the price. I pity the developers, who had a cool game design and probably could have made a great final product. But ubisoft did what ubisoft do, and left the game an empty husk with their attempt to suck out all the money…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphics are decent, but thats about it. Controls are clunky and hard, gameplay is boring and the game tells its story and gameplay through videos. I am here to play man, not watch tutorial videos constantly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Poorly optimized, clanky movement, and the G Force system is just unrealistic and stupid, if you want an actually good snowboarding game buy shredders.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game. I love x sports type games. Tony Hawk is like my comfort food for video games. The game looks amazing, it feels amazing, there's a large open world... it's just soooo blaaaand though. Firstly, it's incredibly easy. My SEVEN YEAR OLD son, picked up the controller after seeing the game for like 30 seconds. I showed him the controls. His first just he did like a double backflip 540 or something, and landed it fine. You just push the buttons needed, and the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The core gameplay is fun, but you literally can't do anything except pointless free-roam whenever you're not connected to Ubisoft's servers. Events can be played in singleplayer... but only when you're online. Not only does this make Steep a game on death row, I've already encountered the servers being down in just 2 hours of playtime.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extreme snowsports polyathlete sim. Amazing for its age. If you can snag a sale, don't miss it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. I can absolutely see Ubisoft team having a blast making this game. One of the best Ubisoft games. They put their heart into this game. I remember as a small kid in 2018 raging at the Winterfest and Extreme DLC challenges. Now I completed them easily. Currently trying to 100% it. 10/10, must play.
