What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 195 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (567 of 695 positive).
Players praise the Lovecraftian atmosphere and world design. [1][2][3] Many note performance issues and bugs, especially in early access. [4][5][6] Combat is often described as frustrating or janky. [7][8][9]

i like the concept but i guess the devs don't care about player feedback many things are still broken leaving a majority of players unable to beat the game. things that were reported during betas but were never fixed. So that being said don't buy this until a massive bug fix update comes out but that doesn't seem like it will happen.

Stygian: The Outer God's The package is impressive & should easily impress any fan of common day- *The Long Dark 60% (the way it looks and the way YOUR avatar rebounds or retorts or ''THINK'S OUT LOUD'' to himself) *Dishonored 20% (the way it looks and plays) *Bioshock 20% (the way it looks and plays) You'll see exactly why, just a few minutes into game. It won't take you long. I'm sure like myself, you won't put it …

The game is intriguing. I both like and dislike playing it. While there are many things to like, there are many things to dislike. So far my biggest gripe is with the combat. It's not difficult. But it's unnecessarily frustrating. Melee weapons have an EXTREMELY short and visually deceptive range regardless of which you use so the most effective method is to quite literally kiss every enemy as you swing and make …

Truly Lovecraftian, and not a run and hide simulator. More like Alien Isolation or Resident Evil Biohazard. I kept getting surprised by intelligent game design and great atmosphere. looking forward to the full release.

Fans of narrative exploration and Lovecraftian horror will find a lot to like from Stygian: Outer Gods. It's a comfortably cozy gameplay pattern of explore, solve enviormentle puzzles, find notes, and attack/sneak your way around enemies. It's more linier like RE:8 or Dishonored vs open world like Fallout or Skyrim The story feels like a love letter to the cold, slightly alien feeling of Lovecraft's work and I'm …

Blamed for the kidnapping of a baron's daughter, as the Avatar you must prove your innocence and rescue her from the depths of the Stygian Abyss... (a wrongfully imprisoned thread)
neutral · AI labelView post →The game needs way more time in the oven, there are really odd issues that were somehow allowed to get into the release version. Some weird writing decisions in the dialogue that reek of first draft that got pushed without revision. I've had a few weird dialogue situations where the wrong dialogue plays over text, or perhaps more egregious in the case of a major plot character it plays literally all of the dialogue options in one unbroken chain like it was the full mp4 file unedited. Even…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The last thing I did before shutting down Conan last night was recruit a Stygian Dancer II. She *IMMEDIATELY* took up residence on a stool at my bar. If I could change the names of thralls in the game, she'd be called Norm now. I'm still gonna do that, but the game doesn't know.
neutral · AI labelView post →Just finished playing the early access version of Stygian: Outer Gods for a writeup in PC Gamer later, but the abridged version: A gorgeously detailed set of environments that doesn't seem to know quite what kind of gameplay to fill them with. But mostly, it's We Have Resident Evil 8 At Home.
neutral · AI labelView post →Can't recommend as is. I have played the demo, which I enjoyed, in February and looked forward to finally playing the game. While I think the developers capture a good atmosphere the game seems to be lacking. Also the performance has been a pretty good step up since playing the demo. I started playing in normal difficulty but for some reason enemies are still insanely strong. You get given weapons but you're better off running away. When fighting sometimes enemies flinch, sometimes they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What I've seen so far is pretty cool so I'm hyped about this. Things that would make the game even better (in my opinion) though (QOL): - Option to Toggle Crouch, instead of needing to hold down CTRL. - Even better would be if devs could also make a "dynamic" option, which notices whether the player tapped or held CTRL, and decides the action to stand up based on that (tap F again, or just let go of the button). - Option to Hold F for lighter/lamp, instead of it being only toggle. - Same…

neutral · AI labelView post →well... yeah, as others already said, the fighting is retarded. waiting for animation to fully complete to be able to block is a huuuuuge mistake. one the developer could fix easily, but did not do that in over a year. shows you they don't care, so I'd advise you against buying this game. The same problem is present when switching weapons using quick switch bar. other annoying things - stutters. sounds being stuck - I've been hearing water splash while jumping all the time until restart.…

neutral · AI labelView post →The atmosphere is definitely there, but that's about it. The combat is laughable and flat. Especially the hand to hand one. You are too slow to do side step, or any type of dodge, so the only option is to block. But there are enemies with much faster attack pattern than your block-attack-block. This means that either you block constantly, or you open up for attacks, but if you do that, you will be killed with 2-3 swipes. So you take the pistol, but ammo and the resources to make some are so…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you can't make your game run at 60 FPS on a 4080 you really do not deserve a positive review.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game when it was still new and had no issues with it. but now every 30 minutes of gameplay my game crashes and says "fatal error" i have tried everything I can think of and looked online for help but nothing. I can't recommend this game until they fix the stability issues.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it has a gamebreaking bug 7 hours in (after a pretty obnoxious boss fight) that traps you in a loop of immediately getting frostbitten in a random place with almost zero visibility and dying in like 5 seconds. because of the way saving works in this game i can't roll back to an earlier save. lol. lmao. i thought about starting a new run and seeing if that fixes things but it just doesn't feel worth it? the protagonist is dull as dirt and underdeveloped and the only interesting character in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stygian: Outer Gods. Set in the universe of Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the game lets players witness and influence the events preceding the Black Day.
neutral · AI labelView post →Not my final verdict since it is still in EA, but for now, here we go. Performance is terrible! And how can it be worse inside the mansion than outside? Inside of the mansion is almost unplayable for me. A flip book gives me more fps. Atmosphere, level design, story, all okay. Combat feels a little weird, but that is probably due to the horrible perfomance. Can't say if it is supposed to be like that - just slow, melee hits that don't connect, stuff like that. Imo a lot of "small" things need…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is one of the creepiest games I've ever played. Although, and considering it's still in EA, there's the question of optimization, which it seems to have none. The game, although pretty, runs extremely poorly on LOW settings, and even if my laptop is not the best, 10 fps is not acceptable, since it can and will run Elden Ring and Cyberpunk on HIGH settings. For the moment I cannot really recommend it, since, for what I noticed, the devs keep adding new areas to the game, new game-play…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game could be interesting in version 1.0 if they make the right choices. The story is engaging, the atmosphere is good, and the survival mechanics are basic but they work. However, the combat system is really not polished, and even with DLSS and Frame Generation, it only runs at around 40–60 FPS max, whereas I can play games like Cyberpunk and Crimson Desert at over 100+ FPS on max settings...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool concept and the game was neat in the beginning. No matter what graphic settings I chose the game just lagged and shuddered. I have a 3070 with 32GB RAM and an i9 CPU so it’s not my PC. Auto Detect in game, sets the graphics at High, and even turning down to Low the game just seems like it’s catching up with itself. The DLSS feature makes it even worse and tries setting my NVIDIA GPU to TSR. I tried troubleshooting everything and the game still underperforms. Maybe I will try again…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →garbage combat. i cant stomach a survival horror that cant figure out how combat with long ghost frames that make blocks not work and enemys with hyper armor being unfair and totally jank ruins the game. its not a stealth focused game you dont hide in lockers and back stab enemys. you are expected to fight and they cant even get that part right.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Look I love this game a lot, but the swinging of a weapon takes forever and there is no chance to block straight after doing a melee attack which is a bad thing. When I 1st load the game and load a save file it crashes back to the desktop then I have to launch the game again and then the save file will work, it happens everytime I start to play this game, even a new game?? I'll give it a positive for now but please fix the melee as I do love this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →wanted to like this game but the optimization is extremely bad and its just a red flag to me when even the players have been wanting fixes for the games performance since last year and still havent gotten it wish i could play it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is interesting and I cannot wait to play it, but the optimization is HORROR. cannot recommend it for now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grimbeard had a great video on the first game, which really felt like it was onto something cool and then just... stops. This new Stygian just has me thinking 'I really should replay RE8'. Also reminded me that I never got round to the expansion for it.
negative · AI labelView post →The atmosphere is there, buuut that's all. Infuriating combat, atrocious VA, and no love for AMD users. They added DLSS and, their answer regarding FSR, was that they chose TSR instead of FSR because it looked the same, felt the same and they didn't need to hassle with the implementation. They literally said TSR = FSR 4.1. NO, you were just lazy and subjective for choosing only DLSS.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It needs performance updates. The game glitches and stutters constantly to the point where it’s not fun to play. Once that improves then this game is an easy recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game releasing in this so-called "final" state is a bad joke : physic glitches, enemy AI, the final chapter... you've betrayed those who put money into the pre-release. what a scam.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i wouldnt buy it unless they seriously patch the game. the combat is a slugfest. you are either too weak to do anything or there are too many enemies which 3 hit you while you need to hit a shitload of times. that messes the experience, i died 4 times because there are places where you cannot for the life of you pass undetected. it's a shame that this is the second Stygian game which sucks and i really wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt that is why i bought it while on EA
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enemies can not only detect, attack, and kill you through walls and staircases, which is absurd, but their attack range also seems to be magically three to five times greater than yours. I understand you're not a high-budget studio with FPS legends like John Carmack and John Romero, or veterans behind DOOM, Quake, Half-Life, and F.E.A.R. consulting on your combat systems. But in a game like this, you absolutely must nail the FPS combat and how it feels. Otherwise, you're leaving players with a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Promising premise, cool aesthetic, solid survival horror framework - ruined by unstable performance issues post-patch one month after initial EA release and very clunky combat. Low of the creators to release a tiny demo (in length, size was still 10+ GB) you could complete within a few minutes that largely hid these issues, take a month to put out a patch, and still no scheduling commitments for the roadmap. Little trust with how this game moves forward.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Orcus help me but not having a magazine to work on at the moment has left empty a small amount of real estate in my head for an old game I’d toyed with back in 2018 to escape from its gaol in the Stygian depths of my consciousness & plant its tattered flag upon.
neutral · AI labelView post →I don't usually play many single-player horror games, but this one managed to pull me in completely. From gameplay perspective, there's definitely room for improvement. The gunplay feels underwhelming, with some weapons lacking any real sense of impact or usefulness, while the stealth mechanics leave quite a bit to be desired. Melee is fun, yet sometimes enemy attack range could give you a bit of frustration. That said, I would still recommend it. The story is easily the game's strongest…

"This game was released in 2019 and was well-received for its depiction of a “Black Day” in which the world is engulfed in cosmic terror.「Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones」Although it is a sequel, chronologically this work comes before it, so it is a so-called prequel. neutral · AI labelView post →Good, but not great. It’s a first-person horror game with some stealth and action elements. There’s crafting, and you can shape your character with a modest selection of skills and perks, which is a nice touch. The Lovecraftian atmosphere works to a certain degree, but in terms of horror, it didn’t fully resonate with me. The story is decent, and the voice acting is fine. The visuals are good overall, but performance dips make me wonder if something less demanding than UE5 would have been a…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like Stygian: Outer Gods. With its promise of Lovecraftian horror, rich world-building, and tactical combat, I thought it would be a unique, atmospheric experience. Unfortunately, the game fails to live up to its potential in almost every way. And I know it is EARLY ACCESS but I also am hard stuck at the very end of the new content update as I have NO AMMO to defeat the witch in the Boss fight. I keep dying because I do not have shotgun ammo. My pistol only has 6 rounds…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good. Early access about 4-6 hours. Story pacing and game flow done well. I got addicted to it and got bummed when the game stopped and said "thanks for playing early access, the end for now." Framerate can get terrible, hope that gets better. Guns are fine, but I'm not sure if melee is ironed out yet. Good for an indie game though. Think there are only two enemy type right now. Well done, keep at it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →what would be a pretty ok to even great game is ruined buy the truly garbage combat and clearly the first draft of the script, i tried it a few times in EA and assumed they would fix how awful it is, but like most EA games when the full 1.0 comes a vast majority of the issues are left unchanged. likely as funding has dried up and they just want this out the door to focus on whatever they can half bake next. a shame, if this had combat worth playing and just hiring an editor to write more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Same old problem of trying to do way too much and not polishing any of it.. Also runs like shit
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More than any individual flaw, this game is boring. The melee is almost unplayable unless you take the Heavy Attack perk, then it's just Kings Field. It's incredibly easy and incredibly unappealing. The VA work is terrible, the storytelling is pretty bad. Not recommended, I don't see this one getting better anytime soon. If the developers want a different melee system, you should play Condemned Criminal Origins.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stygian: Outer Gods is an exciting first-person shoot-n-loot based on the world of Lovecraft. Given that I have read some of Lovecraft's work, including some short stories and part of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, I have a mild knowledge of the literary background. I found that this game keeps to mythos while retaining a spark of individual creativity. While the Crawling Chaos or Cthulu had not made an appearance, the setting of Kingsport was an accurate New England setting. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to be charitable and leave this game with a positive review and come back to it upon its release. So far it's a decent survival horror game with a Lovecraft theme but is a little jagged along the edges, which is to be expected from an Early Access game. The writing is very true to the short stories of Lovecraft with antique English so it is kind of a pre-requisite that your English is in good shape to have an understanding of what is going on. Most of the game takes place in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really love the atmosphere, however it took me a hour or two to get hooked into it. Story is okay, nothing particularly original, but very serviceable to eldritch horror lore. Graphics is pretty, however the game needs better optimization since like most other UE5 games it suffers from being made in that engine - which is slightly a shame since I think the same artstyle could be achieved in less HW demanding engines. I am still not at the end of public beta, the reason being that the game…
