The game is often compared to Banished or Frostpunk, but opinions vary on its quality. [1][2][3][4]

The game is a tedious mess. It lacks the basic Quality of Life features - like being able to select available guardians (soldiers) and to send them to attack hostiles inside of your base, you have to go to every guard structure one by one, select one soldier assigned to it one by one, as the soldier could be wandering somewhere, then direct the soldier to an enemy and then repeat with all your other soldiers. The …

I am bit shocked with the state of this game. A few years already passed since the release, couple DLCs was pushed, and the game still is riddled with bugs. Just in first coupe hours of playthrough i have discovered a dozen critical and game-breaking bugs, including memory leaks and game mechanics stopping to work after 2-3 hours of gameplay. Then there is poorly design and lackluster GUI, This game is in worst …

Being a bit worried about recent mixed reviews, I thought it's time to write my own. As you can see, I have enjoyed this game immensely. I play a lot of city builders and management games, and I call Surviving the Aftermath my favourite. On top of the theme and basic mechanics, I like the special characters and the world map. I also enjoyed the scenarios and that this game actually has so much different difficulty …

Playtime: [11 hours] What's good: - Addictive core loop of gathering resources, expanding the colony, and managing specialists with their own skills - Customizable catastrophe/difficulty settings let you dial in how brutal you want the run to be - Over 130 buildings and a decent variety of disasters (radiation, storms, raiders) keep things from getting stale What's not: - Tutorial and in-game guidance are thin — key …

TLDR: Rating: 65 / 100 It's decent colony game. It resembles a game like "Banished" - where you have to protect your citizens from natural dissasters and establish a steady production of goods (good, medicine, clothes) for your colony and for trading purposes. Positives: - The game is quite intuitive. I didn't need to look for any external sources on how to handle things. - There is a reasonable diversity in the …

Critics, per Wikipedia
In 2019, shortly after the early release, PC World said it "mostly feels like a reskin of Surviving Mars" and that the content available at that time was thin. PC Gamer called its design "surprisingly conservative" compared to Surviving Mars but said that it adds some twists to the standard city-building formula. In 2020, 4Players described the game as having a less bleak atmosphere than Frostpunk and said the current version was already a fun city-building game. Around the same time, Rock Paper Shotgun recommended it to fans of Fallout 4's settlement building element. While the reviewer praised Iceflake's responsiveness to the community, he felt releasing the game unannounced probably…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Apparently they have the resources to put of a swarm of DLC's, but not the resources to fix the multitude of bugs that are still present in the base game. Game itself is rather boring and to annoying. Constantly spammed with pointless messages and an annoying sound effect for EVERY....SINGLE...ONE. Most of you time is spent just staring at the screen waiting on time to pass.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Caveat recommend. Maybe wait for a sale, unless you're really struggling to play a post apocalyptic city builder. Nothing here is strictly bad, not a lot is really good. It's got everything it needs to work, it's entertaining enough for like 10 to 15 hours. As with many city builders, there comes a point where to sustain your society, i.e. advance to the higher tech stuff, you need to build a ridiculous amount of stuff. To operate all that stuff you need people, which exacerbates the problems.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Today was a nice day off. Had therapy, played a new game (Surviving the Aftermath), went and hung out with @harmoniccity.bsky.social, and now it's time for edibles and Taco Bell. 🥰
neutral · AI labelView post →I was writing a pretty comprehensive review of why the game is bad, and my Steam restarted. So I'll give you a shorter one. The game IS BAD. It tries to be Frostpunk, but it's Frostpunk's from a dollar store. The storyline is boring and almost nonexistent. More resources don't make a better game, they make it irritating. Mining for concrete blocks from the ground made me laugh out loud. Building structures that require resources that themselves produce is mind-boggling. Okay, you can go to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels like a decent game, but I just cannot recommend it. It is almost there, but the descriptions of different mechanics are just not there, and I was having to turn to googling parts of the main gameplay loop. I chose to turn tutorial on for my first run, that means that I want it to give at least small hints on tools, not to let me fall behind because I did not know I had to access menus it never told me about. I like the genre, and I've spent plenty of time in ONI and Frostpunk, but it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't in good faith recommend this game. Got it solely based off the fact that Surviving Mars was a hit success for me and this was a similar genre of game, even from the same publisher. However, what you get from this game is a half-baked RTS where even the simplest difficulties become unsustainable due to poor design. (i.e. finite resources) In addition, the "disasters" that happen on a random basis happen much to often, that even when scaled down to the bare minimum, have barely any…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Scam. Do not buy anything from this dev. They will never update or expand the game unless they can re-sell it for full price.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There’s this indie game called Surviving the Aftermath that I’m a bit obsessed with because it’s about community rebuilding after catastrophe. Not a sole person saving everything with guns and murder, but regular people working together to repair what’s broken.
positive · AI labelView post →I just bought the game, and in just 2 hours I had 3 C.T.D.s... Hard pass. If they can't fix bugs like this after several years since release, they never will. It's sad, the game seems fun.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm really not sure why this game has so many negative reviews, besides the large number of DLCs. The game feels about as complete and full as Banished, which I would consider one of the best games of this genre. Granted, I have only been playing on an easier difficulty while I get used to the gameplay loop and figure out what things I need to be mindful of. I stayed up past dawn yesterday playing, and then once I woke up I went right back to it until I needed to call it a day again. I'd say…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game and its not very enjoyable. The tutorials were rough and I would have to figure a lot on my own. Just meh, not sure why it has so much DLC, I hope it made it better. If you like a slow burn management kind of game then go ahead and enjoy this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I want to like it, but I actually dislike the game, now I'm almost done with it, I still hate it. ... and worse part is that I generally like games like this (sims/builders/management games etc). It is a mid tier game overall; the music, sfx, gfx are all mid - a bit forgettable and slightly plastic. The damn sound effect for each notification is driving me nuts as I'm going through disasters and endure to ensure my long term plans work, but pops die like flies or get sick and the damn sound…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Their most recent game with Paradox was Surviving the Aftermath, which is an OK post-apocalyptic colony building game Still not much of a history, but its not nothing or just mobile slop. store.steampowered.com/app/684450/S...
neutral · AI labelView post →I like this game. This is a great game to play if you have a cold and are spending a couple days keeping to yourself in a room. Not that this would be the only time you would want to play this game, but it's one of the best times. Something about the post-apocalyptic struggle with frequent challenges and suffering aligns well with how it feels to be sitting around with a head cold and body aches hoping things get better soon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came to Surviving the Aftermath after playing and really enjoying Surviving Mars, and I’ve got to say—I’m loving this game too. I jumped straight into the Complete Edition, so I can’t speak for the base game on its own, but with all the DLCs included, the experience feels rich, layered, and constantly engaging. I’ve seen some negative reviews about the DLCs, but honestly, I don’t get it. Each one adds something meaningful: new systems, new challenges, and more depth to the survival and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've tried to get into this one... I just can't. “Surviving the Aftermath” feels like it’s trying to recapture the charm of Surviving Mars—but instead of a dry planet, we’re stuck micromanaging a slog. I wanted to like this game. I gave it a fair shake, but after hours of play, I just wasn’t getting into it. The core issue is the pacing: it takes far too long to reach anything meaningful or interesting. Early-game buildings become obstacles to progress mid-game, forcing you to either…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had a detailed review on why I don't like this, but Steam ate it so my summary is just buy Endzone instead. This one is very badly thought out, with minimal focus on the fun exploration and city building parts and a heavy focus on the garbage combat. Combine that with bugs, terrible pathfinding, a duel problem of not being allowed to micromanage your people while being forced to micromanage your guards and specialists (the hero units), the almost comical 'X number of citizens must be injured…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After ~10 hours of playtime I can see where I'm going to win the game, it was just that it was going to take an additional ten hours and I was no longer having fun. It's a slog of a city builder, it was decent for the first half but after that you know all the mechanics and it's just a question of "do I want to sit here and wait for everything to research so I can say I beat it?" The answer for me was no.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →♥♥♥♥ game launcher. Still having loading problems after many years. Don't buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game, even on 50% difficulty, throws too much at you, without any let-up. The amount of times I have restarted it, only to have some other crisis come up 5 seconds after I put out the first problem, is ridiculous. There needs to be better balance to it. It is an unrelenting grind, and it sucks the joy out of it when you cannot progress normally, but are forced to play it to the game's high-pressure strong-arming. Each new DLC you add makes the complexity even worse, and foists more…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So..... It's just the same as Surviving the Aftermath? Oh, and they added in a multiplayer mode akin to all those mobile game that have you raid other player.
neutral · AI labelView post →Don't like to leave negative reviews but I can't recommend this game. The game feels like it is in Early Access and hasn't been finished yet. It doesn't always explain stuff properly so I end up having to search online for guidance, an example is if you find a vehicle and bring it back to your base before researching the garage it vanishes into limbo until you have one but the game doesn't tell you this. Another issue is a stupid bug where the specialists can't do anything on the world map…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love to build mu city and fight for survival
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'd really like to recommend it, but there is one major issue: You have to wait too much. The game is fun, complex enough and also enough things to do, but not in the speed time passes. You are very much waiting for resources to be gathered, is it in your camp or by scavenging or for new technologies to be discovered. It's just not well balanced. Everything else seems fine to me: Had no issues so far, user experience is ok (could be better, but also be much worse), enough techs in the tree etc.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →no idea whats with all these negative reviews. Bought it on sale, added all the DLC. First couple of hours the game seems incredibly simple but the complexity builds quick! love it! somthing that needs a bit of actual thinking and deciding what route with research, people are going to die (the point at any game I'd usually reload because I'm a bleeding heart) but its part of the game and it works and WHY DO THE FIELDS CONTAMINATE I JUST WANMT CROPS and you can adjust the difficulty exactly to…

neutral · AI labelView post →I feel like the Devs walked away after the release. This game has potential but too many clunky aspects that make game play painful. No minimap, always screen scrolling to the other side of the map looking for stuff with alarms going off. Too many useless icons cluttering the screen for things you don't need. No option to invert mouse functions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty solid city builder game it can be challenging at times but not impossible to overcome with the right skills you learn in game

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a real pleasure to have a surviving game like we can found on Mobile, but with a real nice story a free use of all actions (no energy constraints). A very good ambiance and different side quest with enougth small styor, but quite repetitive though. Have a real pleausre of gaming with it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ignorance is a bliss: why learn the very game subject (survival) before developing the game? - Iodine pills DO NOT heal or cure anyone from radiation sickness, but merely prevent an absorbsion of radioactive iodine-131 isotope if taken daily (7-10 days tops or ones kindeys will fall off) BEFORE the exposure and only in younger people. They will do nothing for cesium-137 or strontium-90 being absorbed by ones body either.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall great game for one that loves to rebuild a post-apocalyptic society! It gets boring towards the end-game though. I'd say replayability is quite decent.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's bad rimworld, if you're looking to play a game like this go there and download some mods. I wanted to like this game but it's just a subpar base builder to start with. Plenty of QOL features are missing and the game honestly feels like an abandonware game. You can't really zoom out to take a look at your colony. The colonists and specialists have no personality. There isn't even an outline of objects which makes construction and planning a nightmare. 10$ for it plus all the dlc is fine.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a weird game, the mechanics are as barebones as it can get but it still gave me a fine time as a builder. I do wish there were more assets to customize like fences lamp post (better as the lamps in the game are really bad) hedges parks etc. If it is not your first city builder and you still have an itch this can get that itch but ultimately it is a weak game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Poor design everything in the game is designed to drag things out from structure placement then replacement, resource gathering to the mini over world game you do with heros is a bore. No real challenge unless you wanna crank the random world event generator and then its just adding more tedium, "build 2 or 3 med centers instead of 1". When Stronghold from the 90's did city building and resource gathering better its rough. I also wish i could turn off NPC portraits they make starfield character…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very clunky and the longer you play the less fun you have
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shallow game, very bad performance, boring after 10 hours
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →one of my favs as of late. surprisingly, it has a lot of replay value as long as you don't overdo it (keep those play settings reasonable). it has a lot fewer bugs than surviving mars. it's a pity devs abbadonned it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Surviving the Aftermath is a solid blend of city-building and survival management set in a post-apocalyptic world. If you enjoy games like Frostpunk, Surviving Mars, or Cities: Skylines, this one’s worth a look. The core gameplay revolves around managing resources, expanding your colony, and making tough calls that directly affect your people’s survival. Between random catastrophes, bandit raids, and moral dilemmas, no two playthroughs feel quite the same. The game throws curveballs at you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favourite games. I wish there was a bit more cosmetic/QOL for citizens depth for more passive lategame play where I can just enjoy the vibes of a successful city, but the mechanics of the game are entirely engaging & truly rewarding. Feels like a complete game, runs pretty well for me, though I've had a few bugs but nothing game breaking. Would recommend. Graphics are nice, the designs of buildings feel wonderfully thematic, the mechanics & bits feel very convincingly crafted with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I truly wanted to like this title. Game feels very time sink w/o thrill or payoff. Cut the cost of research and builds to one-tenth. Triple the hazards and add about twenty more kinds. e.g., termites, slime in water tanks, brain parasites, ad nauseum. Liked story element but cascade the outcomes, so one choice made impacts the ones to follow.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I survived, but at what cost
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is what it says it is. Decent game. Late game is just weird and drawn out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I forgot to review this. Years later I still remember how totally disapointing this game was. Still makes me mad in 2026.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I also have this game on my PlayStation and I love it. Perfect combination of post-apocalyptic and Civ vibes. Highly recommend for a more chill game that keeps your attention.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is tedious and lacks plenty of QoL features. There will be plenty of nuances when combine together can make the game feel sluggish, and at time more of a chore then anything. Of course there good sides to it as well but its small and in between. Overall, if you are planning to buy this game, only buy it at its highest discount. Or play endzone/frostpunk. 1-UI The UI are counter intuitive. They either show you the stored amount or the amount produce. Hovering your cursor will give…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Fun game! Challenging enough at lower difficulty Cons: CONSTANT NOTIFICATIONS FOR LITTLE THINGS Can run out of wood if you are a slow player. Upgrade your first building to open more of the map. Everything else is fun. I enjoy the raids that happen, the moral choices and unforeseen consequences. I will probably get the DLC.

positive · AI labelView post →Not sure exactly what you’re looking for, but Captain of Industry has a bit of city builder mixed with production chain stuff. Cities Skylines is pretty good as a builder/management game. Banished is one I had a lot of fun with. Timberborn has come a long way, though it’s still in Early Access. Could even look at something like Surviving the Aftermath or Endzone: A world Apart for something with a more survival/post apocalyptic feel.
