What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 276 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,966 of 2,187 positive).
Players praise the game as a fun blend of Total War battles and roguelike progression. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game lacks depth and variety in units and factions. [4][5][6] Several players request additional modes like endless mode and multiplayer. [7][3][8]

The main reason I can't recommend it, is because the meta-progression feels really, *really* bad. First of all, you have to deposit currency from your run to use it for meta-progression. This means that you have to intentionally hamper your current run to benefit your meta-progression. It's not just about picking up something like an XP boost instead of a power boost, but literally burning your run-currency to use …

Foreword: I have played Total War as my main gaming series since I was young back with Rome 1 on disk, if you're wanting combat like Total War then buy the game and try it out, it costs less than a Warhammer Total War DLC. I wholeheartedly recommend the game even if later in the review I will list a few nitpicks. I did play the demo before release and thoroughly enjoyed my time. REVIEW: Tabletop Tavern is part of …

This was built by one person, ONE person. . . . TJ you are amazing! If you wanted 'Slay the Spire' and 'Total War's' rogue like love child then this is the game for you. Easy to pick up, difficult to master and harder still to put down, it gives of the early 2000's miniclip vibe with the 2020's tech. I keep wanting "Just one more Run" Top marks, best Indie game 2026

I love total war warhammer. But inevitably every time I play those games I get caught up in the overworld resource management element of it, turtle real hard, produce overwhelming armies that can't be stood up to by the AI, and autoresolve every battle as I paint the map. Which isn't really all that fun, actually This game gives me everything I actually find FUN about those games and also gives me a CHALLENGE All …

It's a fun little game. A smaller, simplified version of Total War Warhammer with a classic roguelite board instead of the global strategy part, even most factions and units are clearly based off it. For a single dev it's a good accomplishment, special props for making source code public on github to share with other aspiring devs. As for feedback and suggestions - it lacks diversity and uniqueness in units and …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty cool game. Lots of potential. I WISH there was an endless mode, where you can fight increasingly harder maps or acts until you die. The fact it just stops after act 3 is disappointing. I was ready to continue the story of my army and making them stronger. Please if you could add this mode I'd be so hyped. Just an endless mode until you die. I was looking forward to continuing my army's story for many acts still.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At £17 its a little steep of a price for the amount of Game here. You run through 7 ish battles 3 times on a campaign whilst developing your own army. The relics and consumables add some variety but it feels like the balance of challenge is all over the place. A campaign is either a stomp or ended by a sudden difficulty spike depending on RNG. Battles are fun but can feel tedious when its an obvious victory and you still take big losses. AI in battles is a little dumb. Its easy to exploit…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review will be edited and expanded upon this weekend - probably - maybe. First things first. This game is NOT an intricate tactical game worthy of replacing titles such as Master of Command, Total War, WARNO, or similar titles. It is NOT an in-depth RTS game worthy of replacing titles such as Warcraft III, Tempest Rising, Age of Empires, etc. It also is NOT a complex roguelike with deep progression like Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy. This game is a much-needed, arcade-depth tactical game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm speaking as an indie dev myself. This is a great project at a very fair price. Is it as deep and polished as Creative Assembly Total War games? No. Is it as content rich as other Roguelites? No. It is, however, an extremely well thought out merger between two popular yet still relatively niche genres. It does a fantastic job blending the elements of both top down battlefield commanding as well as the randomized, progression unlocking Roguelite adventure system. Furthermore, it is getting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a shame that I have to give the game a negative review. I played the demo and loved it but after playing the full game it just seems a bit samey. The AI doesn't seem to have any plan except to place everything together (unless it has the ability to be placed out of zone) and then walk directly towards you. They seem to always walk to you (if it isn't a siege). The factions felt kinda of samey. Honestly it is a cool idea and I want to like it but I don't :(
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game but little customization and also little strategy. The maps are too similar, units are too similar too also there isn't abilities and formations or some side of internal minigame around units. There is the skeleton of a great experience but it lacks the deepness. Play Masters of Command if you want a Total War-Roguelite experience,it has many great ideas and a better gameplay
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun conceptually. i think for a game only focused on combat the combat feel is quite lacking. projectiles aren't true projectiles (as in they don't have to physically hit their target) and carry no tangible power, melee clashes and especially charges have no oomph. units almost move too responsively, makes them feel like paper with no variance or weight to them. i think the out-of-battlemap systems are great, and intelligent. however, i find myself unsatisfied with the combat, which, unlike…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game was released as a finished product, so I wrote my review based on that. Bold fusion of the Total War battle system with roguelike mechanics, and it was kind of ok. However, I decided to give it a negative review because of its poor replayability and a lack of content. Campain Pros: 1. Fast and simple. 2. Faction have some distinctions. They are small and sometimes insignificant, but they do exist. Cons: 1. For a unit collecting game it has small selection of units(3-4 sometimes 5…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game isn't bad, it's just not worth $20. For a dev like this, it's decently made and feels honest. Someone got an idea for the game concept and went with it. I definitely think the game has potential, but the perpetual sales alone speak to my complaints about the cost to quality factor. This game can go places, but I think a smaller up-front fee for early adopters would sell more people on the game when they see other playing it. Why do I think it's overpriced? The battles: Unit control…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One dude did better than CA in 20 years. He even promised to not make paying DLC and even open sourced the code of the game. The game is great, the roguelike mechanic is awesome. If i could refund every € i put in total war to give it to this guy i would.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted it to be good but was bored after the first two runs, I played to the 4th difficulty because each one is gate kept if you like that. multiplayer battles wont fix it for me as the battle are better in tww2 so id just play that instead. The replayability is lacking, in a run based game the core loop is the most important part. Coop campaign would help but improving replayability is whats needed and I dont mean grinding gold from each run and playing each difficulty to unlock 10…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great game and I emplore you to consider thoroughly if any of the negative reviews truly manage to argue that the game is bad or just give a thumbs down because it wasn't perfect. For the scope and the price tag I think the developer definitely deserves a thumbs up and I am glad I spent my money for both a fun experience to begin with and to support a good idea.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The roguelike portion suffers from a severe lack of content — you’ll see everything the game has to offer within 2–3 runs, and the so‑called “random events” are basically nonexistent, leaving almost no variation between playthroughs. The game also throws an unnecessarily large number of characters at you, yet none of them feel distinct. Melee units without shields, even at the highest rarity, get instantly deleted by ranged attacks and have no real purpose. The RTS portion — supposedly the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me start of by saying i like the game. I played the demo when it first came out and while i saw some bugs I honestly couldnt wait to play more of this. But as soon as i now play the main game, get into the battle and use the ALT-DRAG function to move my units forward they turn to the side going into pencil formation. THAT WAS THE SAME BUG I ENCOUNTERED DURING THE FIRST DEMO! How is this still a problem? Moving your army around is like 90% of the gameplay. If not even the most basic of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Total War shrunk down to the perfect size. - Every unit matters - It's not overwhelming - The factions are different enough to feel unique - The roguelike loop is fun and makes your units feel more individual Just a good game. There's still a handful of things it needs to become a great game, but it looks like the developer is active and will reach that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is phenomenal. In the mood for a total war campaign but don't have days to spend completing it? This scratches that itch. 10/10 play this game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game and dev. It's fun when your tactics in the field win you battles at poor odds and it's fun when your choices in random rewards line up to become very powerful. It'd be nice if the game had an endless mode rewarding being too powerful. I have another 80 hours on the demo and many on discord. I really hope this game and sub genre take off. The dev uses his enthousiastic community very well, I've had a blast contributing there. He's planning to add more updates and factions without…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game but for now its more of a buy and wait half a year game. Right now it needs performance fixes and more varied events to land on. This game can be somthin truly special if given the right updates. But even as is, Its a very fun game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept is genius in its simplicity. And there are just enough mechanics in the different generals to make you try out new army comps. Wanted to wield shogun 2 armies against the tw3 vampire counts? Now you can! Maybe they even have elven arches, because why not. The fights are sadly very basic. Its no total war engine, has no hero units and almost no special abilites or magic. Lacking such the factions are not as unique as they could be and feel very samy besides the looks. (VCs have…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game started with a great idea, and delivered, for the most part, on the execution. Some of the best games have come about by someone mashing two good things together, like Balatro combining deck builders with normal poker. Total War battles with STS roguelike progression - something I never knew I wanted until this guy made it. Any downsides I could mention may very well be outdated in weeks if not days; the dev is cranking out fixes and improvements like a madman. Never seen a game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is fine. It just is what it is, a knock off of TW:W. Gonna list a few issues I have had in the few hours I've played. The different unit types all feel the same (infantry, archers, etc.) and this is from playing 4 different factions, it seems the gameplay is you just throw units into each other without any real strategy. 2x damage on anti-infantry and anti-large is too much. Units will sometimes get the flanked debuff when facing off against only 1 enemy unit. Large single entity…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its not worth in it's current state. the units are too similar. You just buy troops and win by having the better troops, the strategies are the same in most battles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rarely write reviews, only when I really feel the need to say something. And I have to say something. This game is great. Now the rts tactical component is obviously not as deep and introcate as the Total War games but it's still worth to play with your brain instead of mindlessly collecting troops and sending them in. The visuals are some of the most creative I've seen in indie rts games- by that I mean the whole tabletop vibe. I felt so giddy when I zoomed out as far as I could for the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Avid RTS player. The game is fun overall, maxed it out in about 30 hours, probably could have done it in 24 or so. Gameplay loop does get quite repetitive, but I feel this would be a good intro into RTS for people who may not enjoy it as much as those that are very hardcore. The 3 act 12 chapter length is much too short with little variation. I didn't lose a single campaign run which makes me feel it's not all that rogue-like. Some of the balancing is just way too broken for certain…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I genuinely went into this expecting to refund it. Not because it looked bad, but because I don't normally gel with roguelikes. And with this being essentially Total War without the grand campaign, I didn't expect to enjoy it. BUT I absolutely love the total war battles formula, so I bought it. The concept sounded brilliant, but the first couple of battles just didn't click with me, which I fully expected. I wasn't really enjoying it and thought it might not be for me. Thankfully, I stuck…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So far I like where the game is. And I like that its released in a complete state, no early access half-finished released. The game has a beginning middle and end, multiple fleshed out factions, a host of items, 2 leaders per faction. It feels like a full game and I look forward to what the dev has promised to add in further updates. Its obvious the Total War Warhammer inspsiration is worn on the sleeve of this game. To me as a total war fan it's nice to have a condensed Total-War like game…

neutral · AI labelView post →Played about 8 hours of the demo and finished two runs of the EA. I recommend this game heartily as it stands NOW. If you like Total War style combat - that's all you need to enjoy this game. Everything else is icing on the cake. The resource management is fun and simple, the rogue aspects keep it varied and interesting, and the concept of the game is just strong top to bottom. The fact that the dev is promising more from here is incredible. I don't need multiplayer, but I'm glad it's an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Total War mixed with a Roguelite and it absolutely slaps. Good army variety and enough different in the runs to keep things interesting. Plenty of different map conditions but could do with different base terrain. Can't wait to see how this grows!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to recommend this game. The AI in its current state is far to simple to make the main feature of combat fun and exciting. My eyes tend to glaze over and just end up auto resolve battles so I'm not slogging through battles which seems counter to the enjoyment of the game. Idk. Maybe down the road ill give it another shot but its just not cooked up enough.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As of right now I would definitely give this game a 4/5, as a big fan of total war games the combat feels good for being capped at 10 units, although to be fair I have been playing on a lower difficulty just to mess around. I do enjoy the rogue-like elements how everything feels very limiting once you do a run or two, adding some more events on the map would help a huge deal. Also feels like once you get your units and gear down in your run there is nothing else to do besides min max, maybe a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great spin on the genre. It's a great game for when you want that Total War combat without having to commit to a full campaign. The roguelike elements are a great addition and really make this a very fresh experience. The controls are great if only in need of a little polishing (The CTRL rotation for units feels off). The battles are responsive and don't take too much time, but I wish they didn't end immediately upon all enemy units routing, sometimes I just want to run my enemies down. I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, but is not finished yet. Battles feel the same very quick as unit variety is quite low. Every faction has the same kinds of units, not clear what differentiates each faction. Dev said there is a magic system coming, which might help differentiate the factions more, but for now it feels very "same", except looks wise. If more unit variety is introduced and factions are made more different in gameplay, I will update my review to a positive one, but this game is all style and little…

positive · AI labelView post →Awesome game! I love the tavern aesthetic with the Total war approach to battle. I wish to see more map and the overworld layouts/ variety.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Total War battle gameplay meets classic roguelike "slay the spire" progression through tree like map/acts structure. Hire new units in between battle, upgrade them, and fight it out to the best of your abilities. I'm not gonna lie this is fun and refreshing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've an obscene amount of time in Total War games, and this right here is a very good intro to the style. The unit variety is interesting, each faction encourages different tactics to help you get going. And it loads very fast, so it's more fights per hour than Total War, without the overworld ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that can often get in the way of the game being good. The army sizes are more compact, which I think Total War excels at when it's less than 10 V 10, and the artifacts allow for a variety of on…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I made treants awkwardly rub shoulders with ringwraiths in the Total War-style RTS roguelike Tabletop Tavern, and I'm surprised as anybody that it worked. It takes all sorts.
positive · AI labelView post →I have discovered a game on steam called Tabletop Tavern. Its literally Total War combat styling wrapped up in a roguelike package which is my big game autisms wrapped up into one package. I want to see this succeed so badly. store.steampowered.com/app/3410010/...
positive · AI labelView post →Maaan, i didnt know you dev, but if you see this, thanks! You are restoring the gaming spirit in games. I have been a total war fan since i was 8 and I love the series. This game takes that idea and combat mechanics (to the point btw, didnt expect an indie game to have such details) and adds a cool roguelike idea to it! The game has a lot more content that any indie game should have and yet the dev is already adding more content for free. For this i wouldn't even hesitate to buy a paid dlc,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Total War Warhammer for beginners Very Cookie cutter and simplistic. Rock beats scissors and paper beats rock. Epic scissors beats normal rock kinda thing. Animations are not good dont focus on the battles to closely just health bars and flank. If you wanna be just one faction bc you think there cool you get penalized for it. Example: you wanna be vampires to control a undead army the game encourages you to conscript survivors after every battle (you can only field 10 units in a battle) and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →total war, roguelike and the developer actually cares , i cannot wait to see where this game and developer go keep up the fantastic work :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didn't want to leave a review till I beat the game on Overlord. Great game very challenging at times and still a relaxing "cozy" game. Highly recommend. Changes: - Sanguine court & Taelindor forest felt like weak factions - Indicators of faction battle bonus being active Additions: - Hero Powers or Spells to influence the maps further and fill more like you have more impact on the game - More maps and weather effects
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At the current state of early access I can't really recommend it. It's severely lacking in content/Variety, sieges are a joke, most factions feel very similar and you mostly play each fight the same way with little difference. This game needs to: 1. Improve Sieges, Something like Medieval 2's cities randomly generated with the specific Faction the town belongs to would be cool as hell and actually give it an edge over Creative Assembly. 2. Make the game harder, at the moment there are…

positive · AI labelView post →Finished my first play-through so thought I'd give my thoughts. Tabletop Tavern is a very clear love letter to the RTS genre, pulling heavy inspiration from the Total War games- if you've played one of those, the control schemes are nearly identical and it won't take much to play this game. The game itself is very two dimensional compared to its TW counterparts, but in a positive way that lets the player focus purely on the combat and army crafting. It's refreshing not having to micro-manage…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game for the asking price, but it can get repetitive quite fast. The real time battles with the roguelike elements do mix well, but we need more diversity in the events on the map. Let's say a boss or elite unite appears and helps the enemy, maybe some AOE effects (it's raining and lighting is randomly hitting the units),
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really love it. It's not quite on Total War level yet, but enough of the core pieces of the puzzle are there to make these battles a lot of fun. The idea of turning the higher strategy level into a slay the spire style roguelike is brilliant. Things to work on: The game still needs a bit of balance tweaking and AI improvements. It feels a little stiff and robotic (read predictable) to fight against. That's the biggest thing lacking in battles at the moment that is necessary for this game to…
