Tales of Monkey Island: Complete Season
Developer Telltale
Tales of Monkey Island is a 2009 graphic adventure video game developed by Telltale Games under license from LucasArts. It is the fifth game in the Monkey Island series, released nearly a decade after the previous installment, Escape from Monkey Island. Developed for Windows and the Wii console, the game was released in five episodic segments, between July and December 2009. In contrast to Telltale's previous… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 182 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (719 of 815 positive).
Players widely praise the game for capturing the charm and humor of the Monkey Island series. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers note that the controls, especially with a mouse, are frustrating. [5][6][7] A few players consider it an underrated entry in the franchise. [8][9][10]

It's a point and click adventure game which had a brief uptick in the nineties and probably should have stayed there. The humor is pretty good, better than other humorous games. But the problem with these kinds of games is that the solution is always bizarrely illogical, like Grim Fandango, which means you have to repeat actions over and over, which kills comedy.

(This review is for the complete season, episodes 1-5) I've had this in my games library forever and for some reason never played it until now. I think I was originally turned off by the art style, in the trailer videos it looks quite horrible, not to mention the transition from 2D to 3D. But I finally gave it a try and I'm happy I did. The art style grew on me and I was used to it a few hours into the first …

Altogether this feels like a Monkey Island game, and that's the highest praise I can give.

this game gives the full monkey island feeling. in my eyes it is a worthy successor and i really loved playing through.

In my personal opinion, The Curse of Monkey Island is still the best game in the series—but this one comes very close. It has all the charm and humor the series is famous for, along with good puzzles and decent controls (especially when compared to the horrible fourth title, Escape from Monkey Island). The puzzles themselves are fair and well-designed. I only had to check a walkthrough twice, and you can definitely …
Summarised from 34 of the 245 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
86% of the 182 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Tales of Monkey Island: Complete Season. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor mouse controls and movement. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Tales of Monkey Island was a commercial success, and it exceeded Telltale's sales projections. While no figures for the game have been released, the game was the company's most successful project, until it was outstripped by Back to the Future: The Game, which was released a year and a half later. Telltale CEO Dan Conners noted that the game had been the top selling product on Steam for "a few days". According to Telltale's marketing department, the game was predominately purchased as a full season, rather than as individual episodes. This was attributed to the strong narrative between episodes, in contrast to Telltale's previous work. Critics believed that the first chapter, "Launch of the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tales of Monkey Island was the second game anyone allowed me to do game design work on, which was a harrowing prospect when my childhood love of Monkey Island was why I was interested in video games as a creative medium. Fortunately I was working with a bunch of people who knew what they were doing.
positive · AI labelView post →I finally got around to playing this game, and it’s a solid start to the series. While the graphics can feel a bit generic at times with repetitive character models the overall setting is well crafted and visually appealing. The new characters introduced here are entertaining, with plenty of funny lines, and the dialogue is strong throughout. The story is set up nicely, laying a good foundation for what’s to come. I’m genuinely excited to continue with the next four parts. If they maintain the…

It's not a typical TellTale game, but a Monkey Island game with a TellTale approach. Although the story was engaging throughout the playthrough, I think this a one-time playthrough game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2887044399 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2888875006

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic set of episodes with some really great jokes. I had to resort to walkthroughs on a few puzzles, sometimes because I was just stuck, but other times because the interface didn't quite make it obvious what I could do to solve something (like the keys at the end of episode 5). But a really great game for Monkey Island fans.

positive · AI labelView post →This is a review for all five chapters of the game Tales of Monkey Island, which is a 3D point & click adventure in the very long Monkey Island series (Secret of Monkey Island was the first PC game that I ever played, 35 years ago). The voice acting, the 3D graphics, the visual and spoken humour, and the sheer imagination of the developers, are all superb and very enjoyable. I quickly found myself back in the familiar and happy/silly/pirate-y waters of the Caribbean with Guybrush, Elaine,…

neutral · AI labelView post →Well, what can I say: It's Monkey Island at its core and it was really fun. The story is ridiculous and the humor feels natural. The voice acting is well done and I actually enjoyed having this whole thing split up into 5 small parts. My favorites being episodes 2 and 3. Episode 1 is a really slow start and while 4 was still great, it felt a bit more "serious" than the rest of the game. Part 5 is way too much back and forth for my taste, that was kinda tedious. Navigating Guybrush is okayish…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was expecting a Telltale game like The Walking Dead, since I got this in a Telltale bundle. However this is a point and click with one of the worst control schemes ever. Very unamusing and I will not continue playing, and certainly not the rest of the episodes either.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is probably the most underrated game in the franchise & from TellTale studio: PROS: Exploring, solving puzzles and collecting clues and loot in the large world of Flotsam Island is lots of fun. The game's playful Caribbean music hit the right notes. 3D visuals and movement were done right. Each puzzle is generally satisfyingly challenging and silly. Most importantly, the game is peppered with the series' signature humour. CONS: It was a bit time consuming when it came to downloading…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute waste of time. The story is mediocre, totally outside any Monkey Island relevancy, characters are shaved to their absolute core and basically just caricatures of what they resemble in other Monkey Island games. The only thing this does better than Escape from Monkey Island is that this has better movement controls. Otherwise it's both the same waste of time, money and brain energy. At least the Escape felt more true to its origin. The only reason I went through all 5 tales was to have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SUMMARY Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1 was an exercise in frustration. First off, the graphics. While hard to compete with the original inspired sprite-work of the first few games, this one never actually "wows" the player with any sights of scenes of visual vista or splendor. The original game had a true artists mind behind every screen, with each location feeling iconic and every character looking memorable. None of that is shown here. It's all flatly lit (except for the voodoo hut),…

The story focus, pacing and setting does usually change. The graphics are generally okay. The characters are expressive and the game can be very colourful even if it’s not impressive technically. The voice actors did a good job, the UI is clearer and better than the previous games. The controls are pretty bad when you try to play it entirely with a mouse.…

I think I've played all the Monkey Island games and have enjoyed them all - Tales of Monkey Island no exception. Seems like I got this on sale, making it all the sweeter, but honestly, I stumbled across this in a purely fortuitous chance encounter... in other words, I was thrilled to see a new Monkey Island, and would've purchased it whether on sale or not. Now... as to the original games, you certainly don't need to play…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly, my copies of the graphical+addingvoice acting remakes of Monkey Island 1 & 2 and my copy of the 5th game, Tales of Monkey Island, still require me to break out my PS3 to play them.
neutral · AI labelView post →Tales of Monkey Island is really fun. This is VERY much a puzzle game. Not too fast-paced but not slow at all. My favorite thing about TOMI, is evenif you mess up and go the "wrong order", you can still go back and retrieve something you didn't before. My hours here are how long it took me to finish this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A quick bit of history. In 2016, I bought the Daedalic bundle, at a really good price (a 90% discount). The bundle was definitely an impulse purchase as point and click games are not normally the type of games that I play. To my surprise, many of the games weren't half bad. Since then, I have bought a few more Daedalic games, also at a discount, and with mix results. With point and click games, Telltale games seems to have a really great reputation, so, in 2024, I decided to buy a Humble Bundle…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Escape from Flotsam Island. Fun return to the series, not the best but at £2 for all the episodes definitely worth the price. Funny characters, make sure to use all the chat options to get all the jokes from the game. Mouse movement controls are poor so I'd advise sticking to WASD for movement. Also a couple of random crashes on my playthrough so I'd suggest saving often so as not to lose progress.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Among all the games in the Monkey Island series, the Tales games are my favorite. I played it with my wife and we had an amazing time. The art style is amazing, the voice acting is great, and the humor will keep you laughing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best Monkey Island game hands down, with a spectacular ending that actually delivers and respects the player's expectations... unlike some games (like LeChuck's Revenge and Return to Monkey Island)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tales of Monkey Island (or 5) is probably the most forgotten of the series, while 1 and 2 where consider timeless classics, 3 open up the franchise to a whole new generation an made it more popular, 4 was shattered by critics but still manage to be some people´s first, and 6 being the big divisive return/final chapter of the Ron Gilbert, creator of the series; 5 was just kind of there, and didn´t reach the praise their Sam and max series got, or the mainstream attention their later visual…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tales is the most underrated entry in the Monkey Island franchise. It handles legacy characters with respect, introduces plenty of exciting new faces, and tells a fun lengthy story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first episode is quite good, the other four not so much. You always carry tons of items that you either don't need or no longer need. The game has tons of locations you can go to even after there is nothing left to do in them. The resulting permutations of items, hot-spots and locations to use together becomes way too high. You'll get stuck eventually and have to use a walkthrough. The game has a hint system but the hints are completely useless. For example: There is a captain that you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →50. Tales of Monkey Island (2009, Video Game) A solid adventure game. Starts off on not the best foot but the last half is (mostly) a significant improvement. Puzzles were generally sensible. It also has one of the most vile character models I've seen in all of gaming
neutral · AI labelView post →Telltale game gameplay without telltale story. The puzzles are... alright, but not very interesting and mostly tedious. Story is as basic as it can be and the jokes might be funny for a twelveyear old.

neutral · AI labelView post →Tales of Monkey Island: Complete Season, is not a personal preference when considering the type (point and click, puzzle) game, nor a script that favours my preferences, and there are zero in-game achievements to accomplish, which had mislead my understanding when trophy guides are available online, perhaps only for other platforms or maybe another edition. TellTale games, however, have produced some of my favourite adaptions or retelling of stories; The Walking Dead, Back To The Future, The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Chapter 1 of 5 I'm a big fan of the MI series and have mixed feelings on this chapter. The graphics are ok but I don't like how the characters looks, especially Guybrush Threepwood. I much prefer the look of the Special Editions. The jokes are rather weak, some are just crude and cringey with no purpose. They lack the original dry humour that MI is known for. Enjoyed the puzzles so I'll continue on to the next chapter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, lots of fun puzzles to make you think. This is nostalgia from the early 90s but with modern graphics. the series is totally worth it. I wish they would make a second tales of Monkeys Islands. I miss these types of games.

neutral · AI labelView post →This was the one MI game I missed (mostly because after Escape the 3D graphics gave me PTSD), and... No, just no. It doesn't feel like a Monkey Island game. The controls are somehow worse than Escape and most puzzles are just not quite there. Not as in "they are too easy/hard", but as in "I randomly shoot a cannon which will somehow do an unexpected thing that solves a puzzle in another area". Somehow Guybrush and Elaine feel out of character. Heck, every character except LeChuck does. And…
