What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 176 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (1,769 of 2,268 positive).
Players praise the single-player auto-battler experience as robust and refreshing. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the game poorly balanced and overly reliant on luck. [4][5][6] Several players note the UI is clunky and the game lacks clear explanations. [7][8][9]

Ultimately for me it comes down to a lack of decision making. What I want out of a game like this is to feel clever for discovering characters and abilities that synergize to make powerful combinations. What this game is instead is you pick some number of trait sets to try to hit and then you use the characters that have those traits. I don't even know what any of the characters I picked actually do outside of their …

a lot of people are complaining about the art or the difficulty of the game being too hard / too easy. it's an auto battler. those familiar with auto chess, TFT and the many games like it will find it familiar here. my biggest point of praise for this game is the single player mode being incredibly robust and fleshed out compared to any other auto battler. in single player there's no clock so you can play while you …

Tales & Tactics is a refreshing entry in the autobattler genre that cleverly merges strategic depth with whimsical storytelling, resulting in a game that feels both tactical and cozy. Developed with a clear affection for tabletop role-playing games and roguelike systems, it invites players to embark on a journey through a fantastical world where every encounter is both a battle of wits and a roll of fate. Omg, a game like this that's not multiplayer? I'm sold! Besides that, it also has some good stuff. Since it's based on TTRPG's (though mostly D&D) I'm already a big fan. The designs of your creatures and the beings you meet are pretty nifty. I also like that I can play trying to win but also play just having fun and still do pretty well. I do wish the progression system wasn't completed as quickly as it was. And …

The UI is absolutely horrid. Barely responsive and abysmally tedious, where looking up any information in the game is such an arduous task. The depth of what could truly be done with the traits felt rather disappointing, as a large amount of traits only function within themselves, meaning that they were mostly useless when not maxing them out. I wish it had more depth around mixing and matching, but alas. In the end …
Summarised from 34 of the 187 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 9, 2026. How summaries are made
71% of the 176 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Tales & Tactics. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor balance and overpowered traits. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

60 of 187 · most liked firstI played 20 hours, made it to the final tournament dozens of times... and haven't won once. The closest I got was making it to the final battle a single time, where I got absolutely destroyed. Which was extra frustrating because I had been steamrolling most of the fights leading up to it. I even had several battles where I finished with nearly my entire team at full health thanks to healing and shields. Then the final boss basically said, "That's cute." To make matters worse, NOTHING was…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very poorly balanced for the most part. The engineering trait is so powerful in the later tiers that it's impossible to beat without insane RNG. Could be very compelling with more thoughtful balance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tales & Tactics is a richly layered auto-battler roguelike that rewards patience and dedication, once you get the hang of it, it’s the kind of game that’s hard to step away from.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting concept, but once you have a grasp of what works, the game feels too easy. I was stuck with the initial character for a few runs. But once I worked out a winning strategy, i pretty much applied the same thing over and over for the different characters, winning most runs first try. Some characters are over powered compared to others and by and large, the different abilities don't seem to matter much though a few have interesting perks. I've also been able to win with a variety of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 6 hours, I'm realizing this game isn't for me. There is ALOT going on and it is hard to figure out what numbers are important, what synergies work best, and what toons are OP., none of which is really explained well enough. For hardcore min-maxxers with time on their hands I think this might be great. But I don't have the patience to figure out everything.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With a heavy heart I can't recommend this game on low-end computer. I ran heavier games just fine meanwhile this game struggled to render its tabletop pieces so that I can at least distinguish them. Combining with an unoptimize and clunky UI/UX experience, an unclear art direction, the gameplay has to be really good in order to persuade me to stay. Unfortunately I haven't played enough to comment on the quality of gameplay and balance. I had high expectation from playing Downfall - a Slay…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I put some hours into this game - so when I say don't buy I mean it. Your choices in the game are largely irrelevant and inconsequential. Your whole strategy and every single decision that you make revolves around mitigating shop randomness. And even then that is not enough, if the game decides to give you nothing you loose because the game presumes that at every step you have the maximum/or close you can possible get out of shops, perks ,etc. And the cherry on top the recent update added the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is my second auto battler, and I think the genre just isn't for me. Feels like too much out of my control with the rng, not battling myself, and the roguelike elements.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well to start, I don't see a demo available so that feels bad. Shame on the devs for that I got the game on a 90% sale, so this was an easy buy and recommend at $2. The game does what it says it does and what you'd expect from this type of game. I won campaign mode on my very first attempt, so the game is definitely beginner friendly. Some of the skill animations were absolutely great. Most of the main character portraits are ugly in my opinion, everything is too cutesy (artist clearly is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you are the type of person who wants to make spreadsheets and dive into the minute details of teambuilding and drafting, you will kind of enjoy this game around 12% of the time. The primary game mode is well-structured and enjoyable for the most part, and even winnable as a casual, no-spreadsheets gamer, but boy do we have to talk about Knockout Mode. Knockout makes the regular runs feel like infant tiny-baby mode, even at "Newcomer" level. There is so much RNG in the availability of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this game, but frankly it's not much of a strategy auto-battler as much as it is a slot machine, and even then... What's the point of getting an insane high roll where every single unit reaches Tier 4 AND synergizes with each other if it's still not enough on middling difficulties? I mean, how is 4 Shamans, 6 units with stun abilities with a Tier 4 MYTHIC that deals bonus damage on stun, on top of a thousand mana regen buffs just... Not even CLOSE to enough? Not even a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is cool! This was my first experience playing any autobattler/autochess game because I don't care for PvP in basically any game. So stating the obvious, I can't compare this to any of those other games. At first it is really overwhelming, lot's of options, characters, stats, items, abilities, etc etc. So much so that I wasn't sure it was for me...But then on just my second run, I managed to win, still didn't have really any clue what I was doing, but it was a rush...I then lost the next 4…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Poor tutorial that overwhelmed me with text and mechanics, without letting me try out much in a well paced way. I don't recall seeing the game explain any importance to placement of your characters. Just generally so much text with things I barely have any clue what it does. Pretty much had no clue what I was doing and kept losing.

In this game you'll begin by selecting a difficulty, selecting a “champion”, and essentially starting your run. Within each run you'll recruit members of your team. Your team needs to synchronize with each unit, and honestly you may have to shift strategies at some points. Your team will consist of upwards 6 to 8…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not a bad game. And that's the best I can say. Dead game? I unlocked the full mastery tree, it didn't take long, which was a bummer. The Steam discussion board for this game is not active at all. I've played TFT since season 1, still do, but want to find a different good auto battler game. This ain't it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun and interesting game. Lots of strategy on team building and what to do during events. Reminds me a lot of roguelite deckbuilders but has auto battling gameplay instead of cards. Took a few runs to win our first ending, but the learning curve isn't too bad despite the walls of text early on. 100% the game! I was unexpectedly hooked! Took many runs for me but I managed it. DLC update: Lots of new content and re-100% the game. Challenges get very difficult. Took longer to 100% the DLC than…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its a ok for solo play i guess, but the multiplayer is a lie there are no other real players its just AI the game is also very pre determined there's very little skill either you will win or you will lose the game decides
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the entire autobattler genre is just RTS for fools
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Might be interesting for some, but for me, it leans too heavily into RNG into almost all aspects - which is more annoying than enjoyable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i just wanna play an autobattler i dont care about your lore popups i have to click through multiple times to get a reward. i dont wanna see my characters square portrait bash into another characters after each round. how is there not a setting to get rid of this? why can i not push a hotkey to start a round? the autobattler stuff itself doesn't even seem particularly good, but i also spend so much time clicking through ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ instead of playing the game. the visuals are a complete mess in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The characters feel very woke and uninteresting, personally I think there are better games out there within this genre
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played TFT before in master tier so I have some experience in the genre. This game is nice, you have a shop, 5 slot, refresh with 1 gold, combine 3 hero to upgrade, synergy your team to hit trait BP. In 1 sentence, this is TFT but PVE. I beat the highest difficulty which I think is understandable if someone going to said it was unfun for spamming 1 comp to win. But that's one of the fun, you get something, and you build upon it. If it's not working, it mean you're doing something…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played my first game, earned 1400 points. Spent 500 and ended up with -3900 points? Played my second game, won the tournament and earned like 4300 points. Spent 500 again and ended up with 450 points? Why have a cost if you charge a random amount? I dont have much of a drive to play this anymore if simple math is wrong. Dont waste your time with this game!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I sort of slept on the auto battler genre because most were PvP but the few good auto battler games for single player that exist were starting to grow on me, so I decided to expand my list. This one came across a few forums I looked through to find recommendation for good Auto Battler games and I am very glad I got it. This is a solid tactical game with enough challenge to make it immersive and interesting. Highly recommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best single player auto battler If you like auto battler games or just enjoy roguelikes and want to try something new definitely give it a go I got my first win in about 3 hours of play time so I'd say this is pretty "noobie" friendly since I barely ever touched an auto battler game. Was waiting to buy it since they announced it (been playing the devs slay the spire mod) and honestly wondering why I didn't do it sooner. Great game will keep playing over time
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the campaign structure, player choice, risk/reward chaos dungeons, gameplay speed settings & overall theme of Tales & Tactics but the experience suffers upon launch with elements that a new player or someone coming from a continuously supported & refined product might find archaic, overwhelming or frustrating . Quick examples: The screen is always loud with colour & imagery, the UI is information overload with a surplus of text & graphics, units lack distinct visual identity in shops…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It got boring fast. Instead of tactics this game is more about different combination building depending on what you up against then put it on auto mode. There's no fun in that. Couldn't keep my curiosity going so dropped fast. I don't recommend even as a potential backlog.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wokiest looking characters i ever saw. they look like non binary gender studies college students Also buggy game, soundtrack keeps on playing after closing the client
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyable auto-battler. Once you unlock everything and have a good feel for what works for you runs you'll realize that you're mostly stuck with the RNG of what you're given. That can make it rough when you don't get what you need to make your run work. Still recommend, and don't think you'll get bored in the first 20 hours if you like this type of game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What I like about the game: - Decent game loop - Great unlocks making new runs more and more fun - Decent graphics What I dislike about the game: - Item customization is meh - Character designs and portraits ugly af. Your male characters are either gay, fat or gay and fat; your female characters are either ugly, fat, or looks like a man. You can smell DEI from galaxies away. Conclusion: Nice game but definitely not recommending to anyone. Zero tolerance for forced DEI in gaming sphere.

neutral · AI labelView post →Tales & Tactics fits squarely into the "I Can't Believe It's Not A Mobile App" bucket of Steam shovelware. Taking a look at this you might be fooled into thinking this is a deckbuilding kind of Might & Magic style tactical fantasy battle game, and that's understandable because it sure looks like one. But it's not. This is a dumb as a box of hammers autobattler... select your cards and then the combat happens outside of your control... heck, I've seen more sophisticated web browser games.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although I found the game fun, I felt there was *too much* reliance on RNG rather than skill in the higher difficulties. The reason I emphasize "too much" is because games like this will always have an RNG element which isn't inherently bad. The bad comes when RNG supersedes the influence of one's decision-making skills and overall strategy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i am so bad at this game but it is sooo fun if you love strat games. i love games that have a card or board game like play to them so this is horribly addictive
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The visual design and color palette doesn't make the units nearly distinct enough. This makes the game confusing and unfun to watch, which is terrible for an autobattler.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is soo satisfying to build up your team and take into account all the fun mechanics that get introduced over time!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very hard for newcomers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You gather a team of ugly monsters to fight opponents tft style. Its not too bad but I really wished it was easier to understand what I was looking at because the the characters look like they bubbled up out of someones puke
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At later difficulties, combat is a fiesta with about ten different effects going off at the same time, constantly teleporting units around or some distracting effect that makes it hard to read what the hell is going on. The later difficulties also make the game more and more based solely on RNG as most of the improvements you find in the form of perks, units and items become less and less useful against overbuffed enemies
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I refunded this game even having bought it at an 80% discount. Coming from TFT, this auto-battler showcased the importance of good visual communication. In Tales & Tactics I found obtaining relevant information to be continuously strenuous. The characters on the board are small and not visually distinct enough, and the menus lack overview and tooltips. Although I don't recommend TFT because it requires kernel-level anti-cheat, and doesn't run on Linux, I found Tales & Tactics unplayable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels half served in PvE I couldn't imagine giving PvP a try. The PvE is fun, sometimes the game feels like it ramps up too soon too quick. Very niche game. Make sure you know you want and prefer this game. There are loads of Auto-Chess games out there.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wholesome little auto-battler. I, even as a big League of Legends enjoyer, have never vibed with TFT and never got into it despite trying several times. Biggest gripe was the timers, when I started, I did not know ♥♥♥♥. This game, while it does not offer that large of a tutorial, hands you all the information on a silver platter. And after a couple hours, and a couple good runs, opens up even more with its unlocks. (I do not have 20 hours /played and I've unlocked everything save for the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Roguelike auto-battler with an achievement meta that kept me experimenting. Finished the achievements and bounced happy. Single‑player is the draw; MP was a one‑and‑done for me. If you like trying new comps/races with clear goals, this scratches the itch without demanding a forever‑grind.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Permanently lost Lobby connection.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is fine right till you hit around challenge level 8. Then you have to use specific hero's and builds or you insta lose. So just becomes RNG runs around that level and there is no fun left just doing cookie cutter builds.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perhaps Tales And Tactics doesn't look like much at first glance, but there is a solid (enough) game under the hood. It's one of those go-wide-but-not-deep games. Like other games in the genre, you will struggle to find early success until you complete a few runs and unlock additional features which make the game a little more fair. For me, completing runs (win or lose) was satisfying. There are many, many unlocks available which greatly expand your options during a run. This keeps your first…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Blobert is a fluorescent green ogre-like creature. Blobert's skill is Slime Grab, which pulls the most distant enemy directly to itself. After being pulled, the enemy takes 200 Spell Damage and is Rooted for 3 seconds. Blobert's recommended items (as in the Compendium) are Emergency Chicken, Mallet of Mashing and Pyromaniac's Kit. Recommended!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a nice little game, but there are a few things I'd want to see improved upon; Firstly I'd like to listen to another song once in a while, it's pretty much always the same over and over again and that can get a bit annoying despite it being good ^^ Secondly I'd like to 'coded' characters to be included in the main roster (optionally or otherwise) so the Quick Play starting option and the regular random picker can select them. Otherwise it could use a bit more variety as there are many…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Have I enjoyed my time with it? Yeah. Is it sometimes a bit too slow? Yeah. Is the music awful? Yeah. Are some/all of the units premade assets which you may have seen in various different games by different devs? Yeah. Would my review be a positive one if they'd made their own assets? Yeah.
