What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 183 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,233 of 2,455 positive).
Players praise the game's deep, varied synergies and high replayability. [1][2][3] Some find the game lacks polish and has unclear mechanics. [4][5][6] A few reviewers note the game can become repetitive after many runs. [7][8]

This isn't a terrible game by any means. If Steam allowed 5-pt ratings, this would probably get 2 stars. Its got a solid aesthetic, and the runs are a good length (not too short, not too long). But the actual gamplay is... mundane. As other reviews note, the "cards" in this game that you play to make attacks are extremely dull. They are just a number + color combo. You want big numbers and orange. The variety of …

I've played through 5-6 games, and each run felt very different. For example, one game I got a strength buff for being under 10hp, and then I got an event to trade Max HP for shield. So I dumped all the max HP and I was cooking. I haven't found the difficulty curve to be too hard. I think I have like a 75% win rate, and I'm now on the 5th ascension. But it's not a cake walk, and you will often need to prioritize …

This game is amazing. I want to say it is a cross between Slay the Spire and FTL, but it isn't really either of those things at all, so that is helpful I am sure. You pick from a number of pilots (each with their own special ability plus two other random abilities each run), grab from a few different ships, and run at three different zones with 2 normal enemies, a sub boss, and an end boss each. Each one enemy gives …

I see a lot of comparisons with Cobalt Core, which is a fine, cute, little and cozy game. Lonestar is much, much more than that, Its replayability is on par with the biggest exponents of the genre, as StS, Monster Train, etc. The amount of content and possible strategies is crazy: - 3 very distinguishible spaceships with their own gimmicks - A vast amount of units for each spaceship, all with different themes and …

The gameplay is solid. It’s simplistic with little variance, but that works well here. I absolutely love the inspiration from Slay the Spire and FTL. It clearly draws from both, yet still manages to introduce its own unique mechanics instead of feeling like a clone. That said, the game really stumbles when it comes to clarity and communication. The text and calculations are frustratingly unclear. Tooltips read like …

neutral · AI labelView post →It's not bad, but definitely not one I could recommend except on a decent sale. The cards are referred to as "Energy" and have a value of 1-9 which can get really confusing. I never felt misled or misinformed but I definitely had to put a lot of thought to determine whether "Energy" applies to an individual card or the value of the card in a variety of situations. Where a lot of modern roguelikes have some combination of offensive, defensive, and buff/debuff skills, LONESTAR consolidates…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has anyone else been playing the Epic Games giveaway of LONESTAR? It's been surprisingly cool!. I mean, I guess I shouldn't say "surprisingly" because that's sort of an insult to all the positive reviews it has. But still, I was hesitant based on the trailers making it look like it's too repetitive and simple relative to FTL and Slay the Spire. It's pretty satisfying to have modules that chain with each other in generating more and more energy after you've spent your last cell. It's really…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's decent, but it's the kind of game where you want to try one more game while you are playing it to see the new weapons and stuff, and then after you are done for the night you never feel the urge to go back to it. Because the items you get are just not THAT cool, and there isn't much story to speak of.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will premise this by saying: I feel this is a game moreso geared towards those well-versed in roguelikes and/or deck builders already. It lacks an amount of prettying polish that leaves it a little rough around the edges, with boring visuals and a story so forgettable I couldn’t for the life of me tell you what it’s about other than “spaceship fights”. That being said, the mechanics and QOL pieces in this game give a die-hard roguelike fan a great game to dig into. The concept is simple:…

neutral · AI labelView post →A fun roguelike. Instead of cards or dice you draw machines for your space ship. Machines can be placed into a limited number of slots along three lanes. Their placement can influence your power in that lane (that you'll try to use to overpower the enemy in that lane) or have side effects on adjacent machines, usually in a specific direction. Battle rounds consist of you getting a random amount of three types of energy, though you can influence your 'deck' of energy. You'll try to match that…

negative · AI labelView post →#JustBeatIt Lonestar. That's 100% a game for me. A rougelite with a lot of risk/reward decisions. Success in challenging combats is determined by smart usage of synergies between weapons, support items and relics. All that in a western themed space environment. Awesome. @polykillpodcast.bsky.social
positive · AI labelView post →This game answers the question, "What if One Deck Dungeon didn't suck and was themed around space ships?". The mood of the game is reminiscent of FTL, with lots of great flavor text and nods here and there to other bounty hunter IPs like Cowboy Bebop. I don't know why people are tagging this with Card Battler or Roguelike Deckbuilder because it's not that, but that's a great thing. I'm frankly getting sick of "deck" mechanics in roguelikes. Boardgame players may find the mechanics…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's not really a deckbuilder, it's an engine builder - there are no cards to draw, just pieces that interact with each other. That said, it's an engine builder where the creators absolutely understood the assignment. This is fun to play over and over and over again, and the huge variety of pilot characters gives the game some real staying power.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like slay the spire, and also are not annoyed by lane mechanics, this is a reaaaaaally good game to pick up. The nature of the energy generation and the arsenal management is really satisfying, managing to create interesting engine potential in a single player rouge-like while removing some of the insanely salt inducing low-rolls of traditional deckbuilders.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just want to be clear, because I don't feel like it was really made obvious, this is a game for children. There's all sorts of poorly explained mechanics that make you think it's for adults, but it's a game to help kids practice math. Good on em for making games for kids that are engaging and fun, but I don't think it's terribly clear off the rip and it should be. There's just about no gameplay to speak of and this is basically gambling for units to mix and match for math. You're handed a…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's decent. Not great. Could use a better unlock system or a way to upgrade stuff permanently between runs. Cobalt Core is basically the same thing only better. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played one match so far but wow this is an ingeniously simple and deep game. Make your number bigger than your opponent seems like it would be boring but the way you generate power is soooooo varied and complex. I love how the different component work with each other to build synergy, sort of like Backpack Hero type games. I'm excited to play more of this. Highly recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I generally love games like this and I really want to like this game. It's the kind of thing I'm looking for but I can't recommend this game because... 1. The explanations of what different items do is confusing (it's really not well written). 2. The difficulty jump from level 0 to level 1 is so big; Level 0 I can win the game without trying, Level 1 I can't even get past the first galaxy. 3. The game gifts you the unlocks too easily, there's nothing to work towards.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kind of ok. Could probably go for a neutral option, but doesn't cut it for a recommend. It's fully functional, but lacks something that makes it compelling. Just feels like I could be playing FTL or Cobalt Core instead. Completed a run on first try. Wiped a few times after. Got a new ship, some more captains and more variety unlocked, but fail to see a reason to keep playing any further.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m really impressed, scratches exactly the right roguelike itch. A few hours in, feels well balanced, different playstyles, pilots and ways to win. Initial runs until you unlock higher difficulty maybe slightly too easy for experienced players, but still makes you think. Descriptions of effects could be a bit clearer at times and the English is sometimes a bit clunky, but all very workable and doesn’t detract from the overall charm of the game. Runs well on steam deck. Only small gripe is…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like inventory adjacency style management (Backpack Hero, Backpack Battles, God of Weapons) in a roguelite builder style, then you should enjoy this game. The number of items which modify behaviors is relatively high. One interesting feature is that you can engage in a boss gauntlet after you win the game. You can also view your old builds and statistics, and even go back and rerun the boss gauntlet again or if you fail the first time. Tose are two very interesting features that…

neutral · AI labelView post →Very fun. Instead of a rougelike deck builder, it's more of a rougelike engine builder. Good aesthetics and variety, and combos and synergies are very satisfying to pull off. It's maybe not quite up there with the greats of the genre, but it's pretty damn good and a bargain at the asking price. You should play it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am very much enjoying this. It has FTL aesthetic with the "wild west" lore of bounty hunters. The mechanics themselves are an amalgam of Slay the Spire (Deck Building + Treasures) and Monster Train (Lanes + Modulation) Haven't played enough to notice any unbalances, but it's hard to lead any game into perfection without constant playtesting, so I hope any adjustments made are from community feedback. Super fun and rewarding game. It isn't punishing as you might think. The problem, in my…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an interesting Roguelike where combos play a important role (and I don't even think I found the most impactful ones by the way). Every one of the nine slots where you can fit items can impact the others, often depending on the Energy you draw. Looks very similar to probably other titles and may lack a little bit of "soul" if you see what I mean. You can nonetheless spend several pleasant hours on this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way too much hype. Some tiles are super confusing to understand their interaction. The English is a bit off. It's just not as intuitive as a modern game should be, especially in its finished state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On first play through it doesn't feel too deep, but the more you play the deeper it gets and I've really enjoyed some truly OP combination ships
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The build variety in this game is some of the best I've ever seen! The replay value is very good and you rarely get to reuse previous strategies / cookie-cutters. Very often, the 9-unit limitation on your spaceship is super frustrating -- until you realize that it's a key element of the game design. Once you accept that it's meant to force you into making tough decisions (e.g., "is this rapid-scaling legendary attack unit better for the overall build, than this common support unit that buffs…

I think the game needs more meaningful content and/or greater variety between builds and runs. Still, I had a good amount of fun with it and it was definitely worth the 6€ or whatever I paid on sale, so thumbs up!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid idea for a game. The first two runs were pretty fun but after that all future runs felt the same. The game needs to find a way to get more variety between builds and runs. Because of this it got really boring really fast so I dropped it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some of the final bosses are plainly not fun to fight. You're at the whim of RNG rolls for a lot of them. It is not a good sign of balance when I can stomp through the entire run until the final boss. I might as well just roll a dice and if I roll a 1 I spank myself instead of playing this game. It's the same experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get it on a steep discount. The game has a lot of potential but it's wildly unbalanced at the moment. Some enemy you'll bowl over and some have advantages that make it impossible to do damage so you'll slowly bleed to death unless RNG turns in your favor. You get new modules for your ship but the descriptions are very vague forcing you to FAFO early and often. Using fuel to evade is cool but not being able to refuel in between battles takes strategy out of the game and forces you to stand…

This is the first time in a very long time that I have seen a developer implement replayability in a game where it doesnt REQUIRE you to die or finish the game multiple times just to progress. Usually you either have to grind experience by dying a few times or you need to fully complete the scenario to gain enough XP to unlock more content to play a FRESH run. This game did none of that. I not only didnt encounter any unreasonable difficulty…
