Terror At Oakheart
Developer Tainted Pact
The renowned slasher horror films of the 1980s and 1990s serve as a source of inspiration for Terror at Oakheart. The community of Oakheart has been terrorized by Teddy, a masked serial killer. As the body count rises, you discover there is more going on here than just a man in a mask. From the Steam store page

Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 190 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (399 of 492 positive).
Players praise the game's authentic 80s slasher movie atmosphere and pixel art style. [1][2][3] Many find the gameplay repetitive, with long walking sections and clunky combat. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the final boss fight is frustrating due to difficulty and crashes. [4][7][8]

As far as I am aware, this is made by a single guy, so I don't want to dump on it too hard. That said, I also don't want anyone to actually pay money for this. There's very little meat in these gym mats. Even as a bundle stuffer given out for free, it simply isn't worth the 2-3 hours time investment to play through. To the players, For the vast majority of the game, the gameplay is just your character saying "I need …

So the game is great and as a horror fan I get the references and it really is a treat for any gore hound. Very nice setup which leads to a pretty solid finale. However I can't in good conscience recommend it due to the final boss and that level in general. So I get that the developers felt the need to do some kind of elaborate final fight in order to prolong the game/give some gameplay value but here it just …

Terror at Oakheart is a 2D simple side scrolling game that plays out like an 80's slasher movie. It is almost like a typical "3D Walking Simulator" game, but in 2D. For the first 80% of the game there is hardly any shooting or action, most of the gameplay comes strictly in 2D where you walk around, collect items, and unfold the story. This is not a metroidvania, the levels are super simple where you just walk left …

A really fun slasher that stick true to the general tropes of the genre. This game feels more like an interactive movie then a game but I still found it very enjoyable. The art is also amazing. Really like how freaky Teddy looks. I highly recommend this game though I do warn some; you will have to kill a dog.

Terror at Oakheart totally nails that 80s slasher vibe in a cool side-scrolling indie package. New weapons get added as you go, and some segments even throw in boss fights to keep things exciting. Getting to play as the killer sometimes is such a fun twist: it’s creepy, gory, and just the right amount of campy. Perfect for horror fans looking for something fresh.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short 2D horror game based on 80s slasher movies. The story is good, gameplay a little boring and janky - I still had fun tho. Just the final boss made me angry, not becaues he was hard but because my game crashed during that battle so I had to replay the entire chapter again.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is the game here? You RAPIDLY switch characters who take turns walking left and right until the killer runs in and kills them. Rinse and repeat for about 3 hours, and it's over. Recommend watching a Let's Play instead of spending on this.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s sad to see the heart of a game ruined by every other aspect of its execution. There’s clearly a lot of love on display in Terror at Oakheart – environment backgrounds are well crafted and character animations are fluid. The fact that this same attention to detail doesn’t seem to extend to other parts of the game is its biggest weakness. Everything else feels half-baked and unrealised. The adventure/puzzle sections consist mostly of walking from room to room, picking up the prerequisite…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't believe I'm seeing all the positive reviews. People have no standards anymore. This game could barely be okay if it was free, but because it's not, you'd expect something out of it. But there's nothing really here. Gameplay is too simplistic, most of the time it is a "walking simulator", but there are some "combat" sections which are annoying and very repetitive. If there was at least some interesting writing, story, characters, anything... nope. I can't recommend it. There's just too…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR: A side-scrolling, gory pixel-art, slasher game with walking sim, light survival horror, and some combat elements. A game for horror movie fans who are gamers, rather than a horror game for gamers who don't know who Tom Savini is. I loved it! Terror At Oakheart priortizes a horror movie like presentation of story and gameplay, which is fantastic for horror movie fans. It also brings variety to the experience as it puts you in the roles of an Art The Clown inspired killer, several victims,…

neutral · AI labelView post →Preface that this is more a negative neutral than a hard no. Terror at Oakheart is an amateurishly written slasher in side-scrolling pixel art form. About half the game is more a walking sim than anything else, laying out plot events with an almost charming predictability. Then, eventually, you reach the "survival horror" portion, which is more side-scrolling action than survival or horrific. It's... fine. Some of the killer's kills are charmingly animated, even if I recognize what they're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game contains animal harm. Though that's not why I'm recommending it - just a mention. A very short game that feels like it's trying to simulate an oldschool slasher, taking inspiration from the likes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, Halloween, et al, and does it really well in a platformer-style game that might also be trying to imitate games of old as well. I wouldn't say it's a particularly scary game. There was at least one mild jumpscare near the start though. Outside of that,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →4/10 Short pixel graphics slasher homage, with excellent atmosphere but the game play is just too damned clunky for it to be that fun.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game doesn't decide it wants to be a game until half way through, when it finally introduces fighting mechanics. Up to this point, there are no puzzles or anything noteworthy, it's moving your character from Point A to Point B. They introduce a hiding mechanic that is only used once and never touched again, in favor of walking to the objective. There was promise in being able to play as the killer as well as the victims, but there isn't any substance to it. Lots of potential, it was fun…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I don't like to tear into games especially with some passion behind it but I just hated this, a 2d side scroller where each character predictably dies after doing walking sim ♥♥♥♥ then followed by just some really frustrating fights especially the final boss(es) and a heavily tropey and boring story, the visuals are nice and the music is nice but the audio mixing is really bad. I was just frustrated by this game and it's more in line with a bad walking sim hybrid

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad! Short and sweet. I'm a big fan of horror movies, so the sheer bulk of references to the genre kept it pretty entertaining for me- and as you might guess, it pretty much is an interactive 80's horror movie(s) lol so it makes sense. There's a middle part where it sorta gets boring, but it's fun to move to story along. And don't worry, it picks back up towards the end >:) It had some neat boss fights, some fun sound, graphics, and story- and honestly I don't think there's anything I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The final boss ruined the whole game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I very rarely don't like games, typically seeing the good in the bad, but I couldn't see that here. the gameplay is mind numbing, comprised of just walking left, then right, to the far end of the map, to the opposite end. It wholeheartedly could have bored me to death.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you want to play a game that feels like watching a beautiful combination of Friday the 13th and Evil Dead, you need to check out Terror at Oakheart You’ll want to set aside about 2-3 hours to play this one. The music, the suspense, and the gameplay are all absolutely stellar
positive · AI labelView post →wanna kill an unscripted, unhostile, defenseless dog cause the dev couldnt be bothered to at least program some aggression to it to at least justify it in self defense. NO. We been killing videogame dogs since videogames have existed, and if a real life mean dog attacks me and i have the means to defend myself, i will try to take it out. But this is just lazy and mean, you can walk past it, but the game won't even let you advance until you kill it. So i won't bother doing it, and i won't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is so-so, the graphics are decent, the gameplay is terrible. It's basically a walking simulator with a bit of combat (which is really frustratingly bad, and this is felt the most in the final chapter) and some "puzzles" which are so easy to solve that they might as well not be there at all. I beat the game, tried the bonus mode, and the bonus is awful. More frustrating than the main game. Boring, simple, yet drags on and, god forbid you miss a few souls, makes you backtrack all the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pretty solid little slasher movie adventure. The end does go a little too much in on the action aspect of the gameplay, and that isn't the games strong side. But it's still a great homage to the genre, great twist on the villain, great graphical style, pretty creative in the slasher kills, even if a lot of them are clear homages to classic movies. Will absolutely check out more from this dev. Easy 100%, as long as you do minor exploration you will find the collectables (there are more than 1…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of the best pixel horror games I've played. As a huge fan of horror movies, I can say that if you're looking to experience the vibe of 80s and 90s slasher films, this game is for you! Positive aspects: The pixel graphics are beautifully done, the soundtrack is fantastic, the story is decent, and it gives a great representation of classic slasher themes. You also switch between the killer and the survivors pov. Negative aspects: While the gameplay becomes manageable once you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game when I bought Massacre at the Mirage. I saw it was getting good reviews, and figured I would just buy the entire bundle and play the other 2 games when I get around to it. Turns out, I started playing this first, before starting the one I actually wanted lol. This game is gorgeous, and is very detailed for a 2D pixel art game. It’s very gory, well lit, and the character designs are great in the sense that the devs were able to convey who is who very easily (there’s lots of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →not much gameplay, not much puzzles, not much combat, not much dialogue, no much story, not much music, not much playtime, not much content. a not much game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This would have been a great 2D survival horror, if at least half of the care would have been invested in the gameplay, compared to what the devs spent on pixel art and atmosphere related stuff (writing, music, animations, etc). It's basically a walking simulator, from the worst type; running around in labyrinth-like buildings, picking up items and doing different objectives. There is combat, but it's super barebone and limited. Mash the shoot button, sometimes reload. Dodge the enemies. When…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very nice 2d horror game, I loved It and would love to see more games like this. The only annoying thing was the last mini game to get the final achievement.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The pixel art was beautiful, and the game has some great atmosphere and ideas, but I just can't recommend it. The combat is slow, frustrating, and boring. The enemies you encounter (especially at the end) are annoying damage sponges and the bosses aren't great. Playing as Teddy is fun, but when you're stuck as the human characters the game really drags. I salute the obvious passion that was put into this game, and if you're big on classic slasher flicks you might get more out of it than me, but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dramatic irony is served in no better genre than a slasher film. The audience is burdened with the weighty foresight that the shadowy killer is lying in wait, making it their responsibility to shout at the screen, "Don't go in there!" If irony is dead, then dramatic irony has moved to the farm upstate in Terror at Oakheart. For all its charms as a well-made pixel side-scrolling adventure game with a ton of polish comes undone with its fatal flaw. It's having so much fun as a slasher homage…

neutral · AI labelView post →Really well done little horror game! Looks really amazing and somehow there's so much depth to the story and gameplay even when it's just "a side scroller" game. Really loved the possibility of playing all sort of characters, from villains to everyone else. Achievements are doable, which is always a plus.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is very little to say. If you want a (barely) interactive story, then it might be for you, but there is no game here. It's just a painfully slow 2D walking simulator with seemingly no guidance as to where to go. In the third chapter after losing track of where the game wanted me to go, I just dropped it. The style and visuals are great, but it just suffers from a lack of actual game.

neutral · AI labelView post →If you like a bit of gore and horror without having to do too much in the way of engaging your brain, this might be the game for you. The pixelart looks nice, the animations are smooth. That's pretty much all this game has going for it, but if that floats your boat (as it did mine), have a (shotgun) blast with it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommending this game because the vibes are really neat and the art is fun. If you like retro pixel art and slashers you'll enjoy this a lot. The characters are fun and the monster designs are really neat, and the general plot is pretty interesting. My cons to this are that the game play is rather repetitive ( walk left/right, pick something up, make something ) + the last chapter is pretty obnoxious. The enemy fights are simple shoot-to-kills but they're very clunky + drawn out and it sends…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, pretty damn cool. Definitely worth checking out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would have been a fun retro slasher game, but it has a very big difficulty spike for the TWO back to back boss battles at the end and the controls are just too clunky and slow to respond for it to be a fun experience. Sometimes you take hits because you pressed F and nothing happened.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short fun and murderous game. I wish it was longer but I am content with my purchase. I enjoy the mechanics of playing different characters. I truly got a little stress and anxiety from fear a couple times which is great for a horror based game. Still very reminiscent of OG pixel point and click adventure games. Do not expect this to be some outrageous masterpiece, however, it is good for its genre and niche.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game highly recommend for any slasher fan man really loved it ! really hope they make a sequel .
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's very mediocre. Overall, it's a walking simulator and some segments tend to drag on far past their welcome. Because of this, the short soundtrack becomes repetitive quickly. It has a short, predictable story that's inspired by a lot of 80's and 90's horror and tends to be a little on the nose about which. The pixel art is fine and some of the murders are pretty comical. Some enemies and bosses require pretty accurate timing and sometimes it feels a little too tight. Checkpoints are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very mediocre game, that just slighty falls below the midpoint into the "do not recommend" territory. Pros: The best thing about this game is the graphics and atmosphere that evokes the 1980's slasher movie feeling. Also, getting to play multiple characters including the main villian. Getting to kill some of the teenagers at the camps is disturbingly satisfying. Cons: The whole game in general feels slowed down to drag out your play-time. The loading screens, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I like the pixel art and the campy slasher story, the overall gameplay is riddled with issues - Inability to run makes getting places feel like a slog even in the relatively small maps - Boss fight at the end was unnecessarily frustrating and tedious Now I might have still recommended it, but the dev's use of Gen-AI in 'Massacare at the Mirage' has made it so that I unfortunately can't do that as I don't want to knowingly support anyone that uses it in anyway
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely loved this game! despite some of the negative reviews I personally had a great time playing this game. I was able to eat snacks, chill out and relax my mind with this easy going vintage/retro style gaming. Great atmosphere/feeling and storytelling overall, absolutely worth the $3-$4 I paid on discount, this company deserves it. Cheers!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a Neutral / Maybe option, most of the time you will walking from point A to point B, flipping a switch, grabbing an item and then dying a scripted death or mandatorily killing someone to proceed. The parts where you do actually get to play, the chapters where you control the sheriff, i actually had fun, there was even a couple "boss" battles, but that was about 30% of the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything was fine until the final chapter. That chapter robbed me of any horror/slasher atmosphere and left me frustrated. Why did you have to turn the game into shooter where every time you dodge you flip a coin to see if an enemy will 360-no-scope right at the end of the roll animation? Why there has to be more than 3 phases for the last boss? Why there is no save mid-fight for the last boss if you knew your game is in this terrible condition? Seriously, everything except for the final…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game ruined by a obnoxious game mechanics, bullets not being able to hit more than one enemy and completely destroying a run as it likes to pick and chose, enemies immune to bullets after animations, i shoot 2 bullets and reload 6 and the end game is just boring and repetitive. However Mr Tops is on top frfr.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to recommend this game but I don't think I can. The story is nothing special but it's fun, the art is very well done with it's pixel styled movement and the writing isn't the worst but it's just not a good game. It feels like you're moving from point A to B for almost the entire game and no real semblance of actual gameplay appears until more then half way through the game. The combat is janky at best but also does not feel rewarding. The horror stingers got a little old and you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting premise and fun retro style. However, character motion kinda sucks (ie, won't turn to fire even though moved in the direction) and bosses take 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000 shots and will not die. Would be better if a tad more playable (ie bosses actually die like expected, could heal, characters actually moved correctly.) - fun to a point but pretty much giving up as not worth finishing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine up until the final boss where they have tighter dodge-timings than Dark Souls or Elden Ring. It could be a fun experience but the whole game is let down by terrible combat and dodging. I watched the ending on YouTube and the person playing was killing enemies in 1-2 hits whereas it was taking me 3-4??? So I'm not sure if there's a hidden easy mode which is never explained. Unless you want to deal with awful combat and tedious bosses then I wouldn't bother.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super fun Slasher where you get to play both the baddie and the victims! Some of the combat was frustrating at the end but got through it. Music is also great and the achievement pixel art is REALLY awesome.
