What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 190 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (415 of 577 positive).
Some players praise the game for its authentic 80s slasher atmosphere and campy charm. [1][2][3] Others criticize it for undisclosed AI-generated art and assets. [4][5][6] Many find the gameplay boring, calling it a slow walking simulator with tedious mini-games. [7][8][9]

This game is a love letter to all the 80's slashers! The characters are monotone, every action is cheesy and needlessly violent, and everyone's mildly stupid, it feels perfect for its element of recreating the slashers of the time. All in all this was a fun game to play in one sitting on a rain afternoon.

It's not worth the asking price, but if you can get it on sale you have a 2 hour interactive slasher movie that's fun to laugh at and ends before it wears out its welcome. There's barely any gameplay here, its barely even a walking sim, you're just moving a character from one slasher movie scene to the next. There's some movie theater concession stand work that breaks up chapters, but that's braindead simple. The …

Undisclosed GenAI usage at the time of review, many image assets ie packaging, posters, logos are AI generated. Aside from that, I had more fun picking a hole in my shirt while waiting to actually play the game between snail pace "serve customer" segments.

I got this in a Fanatical bundle for $3.33 and I can't even say it was worth that, honestly. I love the idea of a playable 80's Slasher film, but the execution here was not doing anything for me. Just incredibly boring gameplay segments punctuated by shoddily animated kills, rinse and repeat for a couple hours. I don't mind that the voice acting was bad (camp works for this genre), or even that it doesn't look/feel …

got this in some humble bundle last october. poor use of suspense. cheap random jumpscares. undisclosed use of ai. a minute of waiting followed by 30 seconds of gameplay rinse and repeat. frankly just an insulting game I didn't even bother beating it. just play one of the thousands of free horror games on this platform instead which aren't just the lowest common denominator ue trash to fit into a 2+ hour timeframe

neutral · AI labelView post →I genuinely cannot tell if this is a parody or a legitimate attempt at making a horror game. There are many gripes I have, but to boil it down, the 'scares' are abysmal trash. the voice acting is mediocre at best, comically bad at worst. most of the time running around doing the objectives is boring and sluggish. and the only good/fun parts of the game aren't even horror related; the simulation mode is far more fun and engaging than anything that happens in story mode. And you have the gall…

neutral · AI labelView post →I'll be updating this with my full thoughts later. There is heavy, undisclosed use of AI generated art in this game. It is boring, it is poorly made. It does nothing special, and is just not worth 12.99

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think Massacre at the Mirage might end up being the hands down best Horror game of 2024. And there's been some GREAT games this year. Its oozes 80s slasher movie energy alongside tongue in cheek hyper-violence reminiscent of The Terrifier. Don't sleep on this one. 10/10
positive · AI labelView post →Its okay, up until you realise the voices and imagery are ai, from slow paced story to slower paced concessions simulator.. it tries to be a horror game but ends up flat i dragged myself to the end just so i could say I've finished it but i found myself getting distracted from the game due to it being a whole lot of nothing.. the game starts off fine as it feels like there's going to be a real threat that you have to try and not get caught but it ends up just being "oh im controlling this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really wanted to like this one. Compared to similar job simulator + horror games like Kiosk or The Boba Tea Shop, this game sadly pales in comparison. The core game mechanic is toooo boring, it feels like filler, and it kills the pacing of the game completely. I see the author was going for 80s movies campiness, it's sort of a love letter to old horror flicks and it's what drew me to try the game in the first place. However, it feels pretty soulless, and I'm pretty sure AI was used to generate…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Uses ai kind of a lot and is in general not fun at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The kills are pretty cool. Not disclosing AI art is not so cool. Which is a shame because some of the key art is really good. With one of the first lines ending in "How's the pre-show vibe?" I am not confident the dialog was not also written by AI.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where do I begin with how disastrously this game fails? First off: the dialogue is horrendously bad from the very first scene: “Why is there an ice cream truck?” / “Why did it stop like that?”. It’s hard to feel scared when the protagonist sounds confused by the basic concept of vehicles. The story doesn’t get any better. It reads like a fifth-grader stitched it together at recess — shallow, directionless, and packed with horror clichés that never amount to anything. Most of the “gameplay” is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's hilarious, not scary in the slightest. Performance is terrible given how bad the graphics are. I'm convinced AI was used for some of the textures as there's spelling mistakes, e.g. "PEANUTES" and "PRETZAL" There's a room dedicated to who I assume are Twitch/YouTube people? I feel like this game was made as streamer bait as there's basically no gameplay involved, it's just walking around and clicking on stuff. Get it on sale if you're interested as it's not worth £10.29.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Massacre at the Mirage is a great indie horror game that totally nails those classic 80s slasher vibes. The mix of different character perspectives keeps things fresh and adds tension to every scene. The jumpscares hit hard without feeling cheap, and the gameplay is surprisingly fun and engaging throughout. It’s a must-try for horror fans who love that retro feel with a modern twist.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing the demo, I was super excited to play the game. Unfortunately, it was kind of a disappointment. I think calling this a game is generous. You cannot make any choices, there's nothing to explore or find. You just walk from point A to point B to watch the next murder scene happen. You don't develop any attachments to the characters because each one is seen so briefly and everyone makes the dumbest choices time and time again. Plotwise....creepy killer clown. Maybe 2 hours of…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game, but it sadly feels really half baked. There are two main modes to play through, one is a short story mode that can be summed up as, "We have Terrifier at home" and the other is a repetitive concession stand simulator. I also swear AI art was used for some of the assets (even though the developer doesn't disclose that on the Steam store page) which is a massive bummer. Mostly because what original art IS in the game looks really good, especially the main menu…

neutral · AI labelView post →Love how this game plays. It is like you are watching a movie and you go from character to character. You are not making choices, running away ... anything. You just go with the flow and get killed. Love it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A slow series of drawn out empty sequences killing time between encounters with ooooh a scary clown! how original. Not compelling, just dull and frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The whole thing feels simultaneously like a labor of love and oddly heartless. There's a ploddingness to the whole game, from the wooden dialogue to the filler tasks to the kill sequences themselves. The minigames are universally unfun and the villain not especially compelling. Sorry. :-(.

positive · AI labelView post →I had a really good time with Massacre At The Mirage. I'm a fan of slasher movies, so the idea of being trapped inside an old movie theater while a masked killer hunts everyone down was right up my alley. It's a great setting for this kind of game. positive · AI labelView post →Gory Horror B Movie Style Narrative Massacre at the Mirage is really nothing more than a walking simulator through the eyes of its characters. Only one jump scare got me, the rest of the game never again. It's really not that scary, but I did enjoy playing it for the story and some of the cut scenes were well done. There's a couple mini games but they are not that great. Doing the snack bar mini game during the story was kind of slow but I can see why it was added as filler since the game is…
