Playing Dread Templar is an immensely frustrating experience for me. I want to like this game but there are so many design choices that turn me off. It's biggest design flaw is it's strange insistence on secret hunting. There are A LOT of secrets in this game. The problem with it is that most secrets are necessary for getting upgrades. This means most of your weapons suck at the beginning, they become better and more fun, the more upgrades you have. So what do you do? You look for the…

After playing the game for 2 hours I lost any kind of interset at continuing. There are so many better boomer shooters, this one is average at best. If I were to describe the whole experience in a single word it would be bland.

Very mid, I like all the guns but it feels over stuffed with features. The game is also way too long and gets super boring after the 2nd chapter.

Fast and relentless retro like 90s FPS. Find secrets to get more power ups and better weapons early, some of them are really hard to find. Gameplay is quick and deadly and so are the monsters. Plenty of different weapons like bow, rocket launcher, katanas, shotgun, electro gun, you can punch enemies in the face. Music is metal ok but a bit loud. Levels are mostly caves and other dark places you don't wanna visit at night. Some filters like pixelated graphics, noir, sepia and such to make…

Has the ingredients for a good boomer shooter. The combat could work. Movement feels good, controls are tight and responsive. But in practice, the combat is an absolute SLOG. Every enemy is a bullet sponge, so weapons feel weak. Ammo is always running low. Whenever you find a weapon modifier that feels powerful and nice, it drains ammo like crazy, making it highly situational at best. Level design is ok, a tad bit repetitive. Graphics are fine, though the game lacks a distinct visual identity.…

Soft Recommend, I had trouble getting into this at first, so much of the level design felt same-y, but then it won me over after episode 2, I'll always be a sucker for Ice and Desert Worlds. Very fun weapons and a soundtrack that just keeps chugging along, I think the most creativity went into designing and hiding all the secrets. The bow and throwable katana are the things that will eventually bring me back for a replay, both felt so good

I did it! I found a boomer shooter thats not fun!!! Played 2 out of 5 chapters but i cant, its so badly designed. I love boomer shooters, trying to play all of them they so fun but this one is just annoyingly stupid. -the blade cant be used as you will die straight away if you get close to the enemies - the maps are easily the worst designed in boomer shooters ive seen, where everything is a maze, also not very "eye catching" looking - the guns feel cheap and not powerful at all, ur ultrapower…

With this game, I struggled with Steam's binary rating scheme, did I want to give a positive review with a but or a negative review with a but? After sleeping on the issue, I decided for the latter. So let's first get the "but" out of the way - DT IS pretty fun to play for large stretches of time, maybe 80%. During some of that time, caveats apply, but it's still solid entertainment. Par for the course for boomer shooters, it isn't anything to write home about graphically in this day and…

Frustrating game. The movement, level design, weapons, and art style are all really good. The problem is so much of the games best weapons and runes (game changing mechanics) are hidden beyond secrets that most players won't ever find unless they use a guide. Just checking the steam achievements shows that most of the secrets are only found by around 4% of players...

The game is great, i have no idea where all the bad reviews are coming from. Combat is fast and intense especially on the higher difficulty like Hell(the one im playing on) The music is amazing rivaling even the great Mick Gordon himself, and the Graphics and maps really do look and feel great to play on. If you like games like Doom, Ultrakill and Quake youll love this game.

I've tried to play through this game twice, but everything after episode 2 is such a slog. It's like mowing a lawn. No combination of upgrades can make my weapons satisfying to use. 75% of the enemy roster just sprints directly at you and takes 2-4 super shotgun blasts to bring down. The rest sit back taking potshots at you with projectiles that are often the same color as the environment, and clip through their allies so you can't see them coming. And when you walk 30 feet ahead another…

Dread Templar is just fine. The first 1/5 of the game is the best part of it, you can drop the game after level 6 having experienced the game's peak. I'm actually a fan of the game in its early levels; if everything afterwards had the same design competence as it, I would've liked it much more. Yet, after those first few levels, it's a slow and steady decline into semi-frustrating game design on average combat encounters that don't seem to have much thought put into them. Your best strategy for…

It's a fantastic FPS game with some level design and production issues. As far indie shooters go, I would say this one is a gem. Many indie shooters are just straight up "run and gun" games that require little skill as long as you keep moving. "Dread Templar" is more of a strategic fast paced shooter similar to games like Turok or Doom 2016. If you simply run in and shoot everything on the harder difficulties, you will die. This game requires a lot of consideration on weapon usage and you have…

This game comes pretty close to being enjoyable but doesn't quite hit the mark. The worst thing about this game is its awful weapon slot system. Each gun is placed in a category that can be selected by pressing 1, 2, 3 etc. The single and double-barrel shotgun belong to 3. Let's say you use single-barrel by hitting 3 and then switch to pistols. But then a close-range high HP enemy closes in on you, and you are in urgent need of the double-barrel. By pressing 3, the selects the single-barrel…

This is a weird review to write because the game isn't horrible its just not balanced well. Bullet sponge enemies mixed with lack luster weapons really hurt the games flow. I would not recommend this game to anyone that wasn't a die hard fan of the boomer shooter genre. Really enjoyable quake like shooter, felt like a mix of dusk + quake, with some additional modern items, like bullet time, upgrades, and dash. The weapons are all really fun to use, and the game encourages using all of them. Each one has great animations and feel punchy, and the combat effects like gibbing are really enjoyable. The sound design as well is great, with the enemies having tells that they're attacking or getting hit, making it easier to tell what's going on. I noticed a big…

8/10 Would Get Ambushed by Psychic Demons Again This game is a love letter to boomer shooters with all the classic chaos, pixelated gore, and a soundtrack that slaps harder than a demon ambush around every blind corner. The upgrades aren’t overwhelming, but there’s enough there to give you some tasty build variety. The level design was fun and varied, but sometimes the enemies know you're there before even God does. I turned a corner and got jumped by a demon SWAT team like I owed them rent.…

A different style of DOOM game. The secrets that give you perks and blood gems make you significantly stronger, some even changing how you play completely without having to increase the difficulty. Some of the secrets are very old school with some references to games of the olden era, Blood, Doom, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat, even the Terminator. The music in this game slaps hard, E3M1 Dead Sails really got the old juices flowing. Highly recommend! Full-price and on sale!

This game feels bad to play. You're just slow enough for it to be annoying, movement feels clunky as your guy will stand on and be stopped by the smallest portrusions on walls and doors (some doors are too small to just run though you need to crouch for some reason). There are often parts where you need to jump over a gap using the dash multiple times in a row so you're left just waiting for the cooldown between jumps. I would give this game a 6/10. This is the second boomer shooter I've ever played (other than the original Doom), and I gotta say I was expecting more out of Dread Templar. There is quite a bit of different weapons and enemies, and the maps are cool to explore (while visually/artistically not that impressive), but I felt like there wasn't really a lot of incentive to switch between the different weapons other than because you had run out of ammo. Maybe it's a skill issue, but it didn't really…

This is honestly one of the most boring games I’ve ever played. The sound effects are super basic, sometimes even bad. The enemies are all the same and way too easy, and that’s with me playing on medium difficulty. The weapons don’t have anything special about them, the maps feel almost empty, and they always want you to do the exact same stuff—turn something on, turn something off, kill some enemies, and that’s it. There aren’t many moves or mechanics that make the gameplay better or more fun.…

It is not a bad game, but there are a lot of others like this and I'd recommend those over this; especially when this game costs twice (20 euro) as it should. My primary dislike was just annoying map layout and enemies. Often shooting before you round a corner making certain sections more of a trial and error slog, rather than a display of skill.

A decent retro FPS that nails the fast-paced boomer shooter combat and weapon variety, but gets dragged down by confusing level design and tedious secret hunting. The retro neon-gothic aesthetics are great, but some clunky platforming and repetitive pacing keep it from greatness. Worth a look if you're starving for a new FPS, just maybe wait for a discount.

The endless references to other games, the maps inspired by those references, it's all very nice. Some levels are quite nice, like the library of E3M4, other very plain and boring, like the desert city of E4M1. My big grip with it is that weapons modifiers, some of which are actually more like new weapons, are to be found in secrets, some of which are pretty tough to crack. Everyone else has already replied to your question, but take a tip from me. If you have an old PC or low-spec system, dual-boot Linux Mint alongside Windows. Run games on Windows natively because Wine always yields fewer FPS than Windows. Proof: I get around 45-55 FPS in a game called Dread Templar on Proton, but on Windows, I get 60 FPS with same settings.

The Most METAL FPS out there. Even more metal than the new doom releases, i'd say. You open the menu, hear the soundtrack and go "HELL YEAH". You pick up a shotgun and go "HELL YEAH". You get to a new level, take one look at it and go "HELL YEAH". Soundtrack and art-style are just magnificent, those are the elements that make Dread Templar stand out It plays mostly like quake with some additional elements. Nothing crazy in that regard.
