Beyond Sunset definitely wins style points - the game's environments are pretty for a boomer shooter and the cyberpunk elements are applied consistently enough to make the game world feel believable. The soundtrack is nice too. It has a few issues though. Biggest of all, there are a lot of bugs - thanks to those, I was not able to progress after about halfway into the game without completely restarting the episode I …

I give this game a mild recommendation. First the good stuff. The basic gunplay and movement work well. Soundtrack is solid and the story and little details are solid. However there are few very annoying flaws. The biggest one is the katana gameplay. It lacks any feel and just feels bad. It's also very hard to connect with the damage you are taking. Many times you just die in the middle of the fight, because the …

I haven't been able to go to full AAA titles in a while, and I've had trouble finding indy games that feel appealing to me. I've been curious to try more boomer shooters after my obession with Doom 2016/Eternal, so I decided to see what Steam has for Mac. The aesthetic and story for this one sounded cool, and the demo felt really nice, so I went for it. This is one of my favorite game purchases I've made in a while, …

My game, Beyond Sunset, is made on the GZDoom game engine, a modern port of the classic Doom engine. We originally used the engine's support for Strife: Quest for the Sigill to power our character interactions, but eventually replaced it with our own JSON-based dialogue trees with a graphical editor

Beyond Sunset seems like a promising boomer shooter that mixes in some RPG elements, and I was fully on-board at first. The game starts out VERY strong. The first episode is an open city of a few interconnected maps where your mission is to defeat a few minibosses to collect keykards. Simple enough, but the presentation, sheer size, secrets, and side-quests make it really impressive. Each map feels unique, from the skyscraper-filled residential area to the quarantined slums that have a…

Game removes all of your upgrades and guns that you get in the first level, invalidating anything you do within it and making you start over in the next level. Completely killed my desire to continue the game knowing you'll just lose all your character's progress with each level.

Really wanted to enjoy this game, but its just a weird, choppy gzdoom. I expected Ion Fury-ish gameplay, but you just get a sword and all you do is left click, F, and deflect. Left click kills everyone who is within range, so F has no use, and when the game spawns like 10 enemies, its not even feasible trying to figure out that 2 is supposed to be killed with F, especially when the death cry is extremely loud and annoying. As for the deflect, its not implemented as good and fluid as in jedi…

BEYOND DISSAPOINTING Let me start off by saying that the first two levels of this game are phenomenal. Good pacing, large and open ended levels, enemy variety, lore, good level design, good art design, secrets abound, etc. It all goes to utter sh!t after that. The game doesn't innovate, it only escalates. Difficulty becomes bullet sponge enemies and lots of them. A normal larger level in an FPS game such as this should have maybe about a few hundred enemies. Multiple levels in this game…

20 minutes in the game expects you to answer a phone. While on the phone, the game spawns in enemies which then shoot you while you're locked into a un-skippable conversation. While in this un-skippable conversation while the game spawns enemies to shoot at you, the game saves. a good GZdoom mod but the "rpg" mechanics are greatly exaggerated. you will spend time and energy every level completing additional objectives to upgrade your character. that progress will be destroyed at random points throughout the campaign due to an annoying story mechanic. So all the work and additional progress you have invested in your character is taken from you constantly.

What a disappointment. This game nails the cyberpunk look, and its of decent length, and the shooting works fine. Those are about the only positives. First off, the game is trying to be a boomer shooter and Deus Ex and fails at both. There are a few interesting mechanics like the power slash which gives you health and ammo, but the whole thing falls apart because nothing feels punchy. The weapons feel weak and so do the enemies. I think the biggest problem this game has is the sound design, it's probably why I don't enjoy it at all. The music is okay but the rest of the audio is…

Beyond Sunset is a game with grand ambitions, but unfortunately fails to realise them. I do recommend it for boomer shooter fans, albeit with some caveats. Beyond Sunset is a boomer shooter at it's core, but it tries to be different things throughout it's runtime. E1 is pretty straightforward, but then E2 hints at a more open, Deus Ex style approach. Things are pretty interesting here, but this is then abandoned in E3 for a linear, arena shooter style which sadly is implemented very poorly. I…

Beyond Sunset has cool visuals, music, and a futuristic setting but the game is wildly unbalanced. The map is largely useless considering it doesn't tell you where key objectives are so you'll be lost most of the time. This is a huge problem considering the maps are very large in scale. The combat encounters that occur when you obtain a severed hand, which lets you open blocked off areas of the map, are way too hard even on the easiest difficulty. You face mobs of enemies that keep…
