Many players find the game over-hated and enjoyable despite flaws. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the story as convoluted and choices as meaningless. [4][5][6] Fans of Dead by Daylight appreciate the lore and references. [7][8][9]

The Casting of Frank Stone When someone mentions Supermassive Games, I immediately think of great memories and some fantastic games such as Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology (well, except for The Devil in Me, which wasn't exactly their strongest title), and The Quarry. All of these games shared two things: horror and engaging gameplay, accompanied by stories that ranged from amazing to at least decent. But …

This has to be the worst entry from Supermassive thus far. I played every interactive Supermassive game. I am a huge fan of the stories, and so for me to dislike this as much as I did was shocking. But the game just sucks, the story is all over the place and even though it was only 5 hours, which is less than half of most of the other entries, it manages to have the most filler where nothing is happening. Horror is …

I don't think The Casting of Frank Stone deserves the negative attention it’s been getting. As a longtime fan of decision-driven horror games, this one is well worth your time. Jumping between different time periods to piece the narrative together bit by bit gives the game a great pace and mystery. On top of that, blending the lore of Dead by Daylight into Supermassive’s cinematic storytelling formula is absolute …

For a Dead by Daylight lore enthusiast, the game is pretty cool. You see lots of references and connections to its universe. For someone who's not at all familiar with Dead by Daylight, the game is mid. The choices don't really matter, and maybe three characters at most will seem somewhat interesting to you. Oh, and the game's optimization is one of the worst I've ever seen. I'll let my bias win and give it a …

Over hated, I would say. It's definitely not the best Supermassive game, but it kept me entertained and played like a decent horror film.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first glance, The Casting of Frank Stone looked like a perfect idea on paper and a lot of us were excited about the concept. A narrative-driven horror game developed by Supermassive Games and tied into the world of Dead by Daylight should have been a slam dunk for fans of cinematic horror. Instead, what we received was a game that felt strangely hollow, unfocused, and ultimately forgettable. The Casting of Frank Stone struggles to justify its own existence. While it constantly references…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is cool and all but getting stuck in a room behind characters is kind of ridiculous. Especially since I'm seeing reddit posts of people getting stuck in this same room in chapter 5 TWO YEARS AGO. I'm not seeing how fixing such a small but frustrating issue is so hard for companies these days. #minimaleffort

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firstly, I have never played DBD. So this review is just based on this game's playthrough. The story hops across three timelines, centering on a group of teens trying to shoot an indie horror flick in 1980. For a short 6 to 8 hour game, it takes an agonizingly long time to get moving. The actual villain, Frank Stone, vanishes for massive chunks of the middle act, leaving you with mundane exploration and teen drama. The mechanics here feel exceptionally thin. The superficial puzzle solving and…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The choices you make don't matter. The overall story is convoluted. The characters change personalities with each passing scene. And all fifteen endings are exactly the same, which is just lazy. Then there are the bugs and the unoptimization as a whole. I can't recommend it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →About three hours into the game, you will be exploring the old mill. Everything works fine up until this point, but there is an optional hallway to explore where the other three NPCs will clog up the doorway and become stuck. What makes it worse is that the game auto-saves once you pick up an item in the room, effectively bricking your save. I have tried following the methods listed online, but no dice. I lost a whole evening's worth of progress and cannot find it within me to start over again,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At the start the game looked promising. I liked graphics, character animations, the setup. However, very soon I started to suspect that choices are just illusion to make player think the story can be influenced. Later it becomes obvious. It would be better to remove choices at all and just watch as a movie - not much difference. The game and story had potential but it haven't been implemented properly. Therefore, can be purchased only with great discount and played if nothing else to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this. If you are looking for something of Until Dawn or Dark Pictures quality this isn't it. It relies heavily on the player being a DBD lore fanatic to get much impact out of it's story and buildup, and even then it doesn't particularly deliver outside of a cool ending. Said ending being getting to actually see first hand what it looks like as the entity devours a world, and real perspective on the camp fire realm among other little things.. Story itself feels like a…

Played on the Steam Deck [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45534557/]@MatureContent Beside the horrible optimization, this is in my opinion one of the better games from Supermassive Games. There is a perfect balance between gameplay and cutscenes, where the gameplay doesn’t feel repetitive and tiring and where the cutscenes are good enough to keep you seated through all of them. The story reminded me a lot of Stranger…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the word that can best sum up my experience is disappointment. For someone totally unfamiliar with the Dead by Daylight universe, it was confusing, although most stuff was easy to understand, in the end a lot of things were left unexplained, which made the ending and the last 15–20% of the game a total mess for me. After the mediocre implementation of the antagonist in The Devil in Me, I never thought I would see one even worse. Still, the story felt, up to a point, really interesting,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →𖤐𖤐𖤐𖤐 Wow. Just wow. This was genuinely such a fantastic game. I have no idea why it has mixed reviews. If you've played other Supermassive titles like The Dark Pictures Anthology, you'll likely enjoy this as it's just as good, if not better than some of them. The atmosphere is incredible, the story is intricate but not at all hard to follow and the mysteries it unravels kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I couldn't stop playing until it was over. This would have made for a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This feels less like a horror game and more like a Dead by Daylight tribute project that forgot to be fun. It tries to mix mystery and slasher vibes, but the story ends up being both predictable and confusing... a weird combo that somehow works against itself. Technically, it looks nice, definitely a step up from The Devil in Me, but performance is rough, and once again the camera deserves its own horror category. The gameplay? Same old Supermassive routine: pick up shiny objects, make random…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The reviews on this game are a bit harsh. Yes, the game is very predictible. Yes, the story starts off good but hits a low point quite early in. Yes, the writing is not the best. But is it enjoyable? Also yes. The game is not the perfect story game, it focuses on two narratives, past and present. The present is in my opinion what is draging the story down. Most of it is a boring walking sim where you dont feel like youre getting anywhere untill much later into the story. The past on the other…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I paid 50€ for this game at release only to play it twice and never again. Truly an uninteresting game only deepening my belief that Supermassive Games fell off HARD.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While having some endearing moments and references, it fully lacks depth and Frank Stone as a main character is really uninspiring. I cant think of a game I played more recently that has such a dull antagonist and weird sci fi stuff that isnt fully explained or really makes sense. Some plot points are explored too much and others are not explored enough. That leaves this game feeling like its underbaked and honestly felt like a waste of time, when I could have seen all the cool stuff in a quick…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very disappointing, and to put it bluntly its quite pathetic of these developers to have a bug in their AI programming which make them stand still in doorways. 3 hours into a playthrough and I run into 2 characters standing still in a doorway refusing to move. This prevents the player from even advancing through the doorway ultimately softlocking the save file. No matter how many times I tried nudging myself through, it did nothing. Online reports and blogs show this happens to quite a lot…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not nearly as good as the quarry or until dawn. Has very lacklsuter action and story. It felt like it was building tension for nearly 7 hours
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. All the bad reviews are from whiny dead by daylight players. The story really is not that hard to follow. Good replay-ability.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a fan of DBD I was extremely excited for this game but it fell flat in a number of ways. I'm a fan of what Supermassive could be, I always feel like they almost hit the mark with their interactive horror movie formula and it feels like a genre made perfectly for my tastes. However, I never feel like they execute on that vision as well as I hoped. Frank Stone was pulling from an existing universe full of lore, a game that has a massive existing fan base and it felt like this could be the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There aren't that many franchises where an entirely separate game developed by a separate studio gets to solidify so much of the canon and side lore. It's a treasure trove of lore that I feel not even Dead by Daylight has in the game. I played it on my alt and it was just under 6 hours for one playthrough. It's designed for multiple playthroughs due to collectibles, yet you can't skip cut scenes. Though I've spent eight years of my life and thousands of hours on DBD, I don't really have the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What the fxck is this game.... Story at first was interesting full of vibe full of life After that it turned to your idiotic Dead By Daylight game exactly the way you wanted to.... I'm sad and dissapointed that I gave out money for a garbage like this and I would totally refound the product if the story wast 5 hours long .... Good luck in the future making terrible games with terrible twist with more worse ending than this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 526: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆☆ (4/10) How much did Behaviour Interactive Inc. pay Supermassive Games in this collaboration? I hope it was worth it because as a standalone product, this is easily the weakest of Supermassive's catalog—and I say this as someone who loves even the weaker titles. I know very little of Dead by Daylight, and I think even if I did, I would still feel as lukewarm. Well, not lukewarm. Annoyed, frustrated, and bored. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i want a story of the original 4 dbd survivors not this; if only not for the sale i wouldn't have bought this. i'll give proper feedback after i finished this game tomorrow State of the Game: The game keeps crashing, only fix seems to be send a report and restart (on UE5 dialogue box). HUD: The interface element that appears on the top right after making choices or seeing results/items disappears too quickly to read. It might not bother everyone, but I found it frustrating. Gameplay: Puzzle…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not horrible.. I don't think these Until Dawn type of games are stuff I can enjoy, good models, good graphics, etc. Frank Stone seems cool so far, just. Feels like I'm watching a interactive movie or something, and not enough horror in the first moments. Or anything it feels.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this. Anyone who has played games like Until Dawn will love it too. Had no technical problems. Loved the story and the way it was executed. My only complaint would be that I would have loved it to be a longer game. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 I don’t know what’s up with all the negative reviews, I really liked The Casting of Frank Stone. The story was a little confusing until the end, but I enjoyed it, especially the DBD references. Can’t complain since the game was so cheap. Definitely worth it if you’re a Dead by Daylight fan.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe skip this, even if you play DBD. The Casting of Frank Stone was honestly a massive letdown. The characters felt very flat with zero depth, so it was impossible to actually care about what happened to them. On top of that, the game is absolutely packed with filler cutscenes that just drag out the story instead of making it interesting. Areas to explore and gameplay mechanics are a bit repetitive at times. To make matters worse, there are barely any real choices to make, and the few you do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty good ngl for 5 euros it's really good but not for 40 euros.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The choices in this game are fake and the plot is so basic, it is a waste if Supermassive's talent. It is not anywhere in the realm of their other titles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Until Dawn, the Quarry and most of the Dark pictures anthology games are bangers, Supermassive games makes great horror story games, I thought having one inspired by Dead by Daylight would be cool but this one sadly very much misses the mark, starting the game the story already stopped making sense, it's all over the place.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as a dbd enjoyer i absolutely loved spotting all the lil references, easter eggs and bits of lore scattered throughout the game. i also rlly enjoyed how much your choices actually matter. even the smallest decisions can end up changing who lives and who dies T_T there’s loads of replayability too with all the different outcomes, endings and collectibles, so it’s definitely worth playing more than once if you’re anything like me. i will say it’s a lil on the shorter side, so i’d probably…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Casting of Frank Stone is a cinematic horror adventure that focuses more on atmosphere & story choices, rather than constant game action. Solid pick if you enjoy story driven horror with branching choices.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before anything, threat this review as more of a rant about the optimization I have no idea what they did, but something went horribly wrong. Even with a decent PC you probably will have to use some AI upscaling/frame gen to get the game running properly, it feels VERY poorly optimized no matter what you do. Having to either use DLSS or playing on lower resolution isn't right at all and shouldn't be left like that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I truly can't understand the hate. The story was good, the sound was good, the graphics are great. It's basically just a visual novel/naughty dog type of game. I loved this hybrid of cut scene/gameplay and I missed some QTEs not being ready for them. It's a little on the shorter side so maybe wait for a sale but I can easily recommend this game to anyone and even more so if you enjoy DBD. That ending tying it all together was (chefs kiss). For those complaining about clunky controls it was…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, not bad if you're a total horror wuss like me, although I enjoyed the story it really felt like, just an entirely unnecessary addition to the universe/franchise... I was hoping for so so much more Entity Lore, instead we got a bunch of characters I don't really gaf about and like, a few minutes of already established or at the very least heavily implied already, lore. just kinda disappointing unfortunately, it had the bones to be so much more. shame.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, I am dissapointed. I played the Demo a year ago and picked up the game on sale to finally play it this spooky season. The Problem is, it's not spooky. I liked the demo and loved The Quarry and was expecting something similar. But let me tell you, The Quarry is leagues ahead in every aspect. I finished The Quarry multiple time and wish I had spent the time playing it again instead. I finished this game because it seemed all the story threads will lead to something greater, at…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing for hours and getting to Chapter 5. Got hit with a softlock and i cannot get out of at all. In the Mill where you go into the small room and pick up some keys, Jaime and Linda are blocking the doorway causing you to get stuck. Looking on Reddit, Google, etc. this appears to be a common softlock within the game that somehow hasnt been patched 2 years after release of the game. Can't recommend a game that causes this that apparently hasnt been patched.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →please do not buy this game outside of a sale. if you are particularly interested in the dead by daylight mythos or have no other game to play i suppose it is serviceable. the story is not very standout in quality and neither is the game but it isn't so bad so as to write it off completely

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the different paths to the ending. Nice little Dead By Daylight easter eggs and collectibles scattered throughout, just needs to be made into a chapter on DBD to really top it off! Not really sure what people were expecting with this game to review it so badly! Also I didn't have any crashes or bugs personally only the occasional frame drop for a moment during a few cutscenes but that didn't affect actual gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came into this game as someone who began playing Dead by Daylight in 2018 and really loves its lore, so my review is not about the game's technicalities but rather its story. I get what the Supermassive devs tried to do here, and to their credit, it does seem like they spent a lot of time familiarizing themselves with BHVR's overarching DbD lore (as inconsistent and repeatedly-retconned that lore has been over the last 10 years). They have made a really sincere and honest attempt here at…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was alright, actually. It's a very bog standard Supermassive game. Some cheeky DbD references, but what really feels stupid is that they never did anything with these characters, in the actual game of Dead by Daylight. The game also isn't the most terribly optimised UE5 game, too, but it still absolutely has its Unreal Engine 5 issues. It's dirt cheap, right now. I say buy it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →LET'S GET INTO IT. This game really was really good compared to what everyone here in the comments made it out to be. The story is really intriguing and the graphics could be amazing if they could just get the damn game optimized. I think if you enjoy story based, choices matter games, and this is one sale. Then you should 100% grab it! ---{ Graphics }--- ☐ You forget what reality is ☐ Beautiful ☑ Good/Great for being released at that time ☐ Decent ☑ Bad ☐ Don‘t look too long at it ☐…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What is a interesting story is unfortunately a headache due to the massive frame drops every cutscene start up and mid gameplay. Some people it works fine, so you can try it out, and see, if you have issues with the frames you will see it really quick for a refund. This has no business being this poorly optimized 2 years after release, my pc is more than strong enough to handle this game, yet I have to pause every cutscene and wait from 4 to 10 seconds, which isn't terrible but EVERY…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →would not recommend, and i wish i could since i love choice-based games and dead by daylight. the story was not that bad, although it could be more interesting, i personally felt kinda bored and had a hard time finishing the game. it felt like idk, its lacking something, but thats my personal opnion. not to mention, the optimisation at the end of the game is so bad that i thought something happened to my pc-turned out it was a common problem with sudden fps drops out of nowhere. if you want to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to be honest, I only got this game because it was on sale, and because of the free cosmetics in Dead by Daylight. My main survivor, Vee, did not even get the shirt (as of March 2026 (Every current original survivor except her has a shirt.)) Just to clear something up, if you refund the game, your rewards will be revoked in Dead by Daylight, just to let you know. Very little choices matter in this game. That's not good for a choice based game. Spoilers, only one character can really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you get this game. Don't expect many choices that matter. Of those choices, you can't really infer what will happen. Even if you could, you won't care what happens as the story makes no sense and the characters constantly contradict logic/reality. The setting feels like it should be cool, but there is effectively two locations to explore with nothing to find other than collectibles. The action/gameplay is nonexistent as even the quick time events are pointless. If you're looking for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is definetely full of bugs, but most of them are visual bugs.. Not softlocks or anything. When it comes to replayability and earning achievements, this game is awesome. The web feature is honestly so cool and so helpful, the game knows that having to replay the entire game just to avoid ONE characters death is frustrating, so it lets you go back in time while having multiple open routes. I also find the story to be very interesting and unique. A con I have to say is that the…
