What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 62 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (89 of 121 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful visuals and relaxing soundtrack. [1][2][3] Many find the story confusing due to its non-linear presentation. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the gameplay is slow-paced and repetitive. [7][6][8]

Undeniably elegant and gorgeous aesthetic versus abysmal, boring gameplay with a confusing story After finishing The Companion, I am conflicted. The visuals are beyond stunning, with some of the prettiest colour hue combinations I have seen. Each area is beautiful, incorporating different colours and patterns. Yet, the gameplay is essentially non-existent with repetitive tasks of running around aimlessly, followed …

Warning: if you don't enjoy slow-paced walking/jogging simulators with nonlinear narrative that you have to piece together (the story is told both front to back and back to front, from the middle, and you're often unsure which is which!) then you will NOT enjoy this game, and that seems to cover the vast majority of the negative reviews. I however, very much do enjoy them. This is a beautiful looking and sounding …

Holy cow! I was getting a little bored near the end but the absolutely jaw dropping aesthetic kept me engaged enough to finish. The soundtrack is phenomenal and evoked a plethora of emotions. The last song? Tears. Would definitely recommend for those looking for a casual story-driven exploration game with beautiful visuals and even more beautiful music.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Companion Visually impressive with a nice relaxing soundtrack, but it is too long, too repetitive and the story is a little bland and confusing. Introduction There seems to be a lot of nature based, walking simulators involving animal protagonists on Steam at the moment. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not a "Collector's Edition" guy at *all*, but I got the UFO Deluxe box from @fangamer.com and couldn't be happier. So much great work went into this and the Companion guide especially is just perfect, and actually useful for playing these games that don't always explain themselves that well.
positive · AI labelView post →Just a Crow having some cawfee 🐦⬛☕ One more week! 🫶 I'm dealing with a big cold right now, I hope I can finish Davrin and Lucanis for the Companion series I'm doing before the game releases. 😭 For now it's just some quick doodles 🥺

neutral · AI labelView post →A slow-paced walking simulator with beautiful graphics and serene soundtrack. The Companion shows you a story of a family of five who are on a work-vacation in this dense lush forest. You get to learn of their story and at the same time appreciate the beautiful nature of this world. The game was alright, as a walking simulator it was a little too non-linear, where it didn't really guide you to a direction all that much, but allowed you to wander around aimlessly. Wandering around aimlessly…

Summon and follow wisps, witness visions of the past, and interact with the present to change the future. At first, I was very impressed by The Companion. This visually striking, emotional fantasy adventure hits all the right notes both figuratively and literally (the score is heartbreaking in all the best ways). Then I found out…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lovingly stalk a family of 5 as they take a work-vacation to a dense and isolated forest; find out the reason they are there and follow them back home. 6+ hours, an open-world exploration walking sim with collectables. 7 areas, 7 chapters, 91 collectables (Runic Stones) and sort-of multiple endings. The graphics, voice actors, story, and music were really good! Interacting with a Runic Stone releases a spirit animal to wander around the map, and the more Runic Stones you interacted with the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Games featuring foxes, or what I like to call, the fox sim, have become increasingly popular in recent years. We've had The First Tree, Sprit of the North and Lost Ember – and now The Companion. The game is part third person, open world adventure, part narrative walking simulator. Told over a series of acts, a family mystery unfolds. As a three tailed spirit fox, it’s your job to scour the luminously populated land for memories, visions of the past, often found in non-chronological order. You…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Basic & Expert then AD&D, but I bought the Companion set later. I enjoyed it for the expansion of the B/X game, as the OG poster says.
neutral · AI labelView post →The companion is a walking simulator, you play as.... I'm actually not sure if it's a wolf or nine-tailed fox, it feels like a mix of both. Stunning visuals, amazing soundtrack, you get to unlock multiple abilities. This is impressive knowing that it was made by a solo dev. The only down side is the story is disordered which leads to not fully understand all of it. Thanks to Sachoza for asking more details about the story and Dewi Morgan for answering, I found some answers and it was very…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A little adventure game with a beautiful story, some colorful graphics and a relaxing music... I recommend it. 🦊💗
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just a quick first impressions review, so far ive been impressed that this was done by one person and its not a bad start really. its a very colourful game with a fair amount of exploration so far and the story currently is keeping me interested. i will say that the game could benefit from a little bit of a linear path for the story telling as it can get a bit jumbled since you can freely roam around which can lead you to find story pieces out of order. Still for a solo dev and first game its…

neutral · AI labelView post →I haven't completed it yet but so far I really like this game. It's gorgeous. The visuals alone are enough to keep you engaged. The music is also quite beautiful. There's a story here too that is slowly told in between exploration. It's a serene experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the whole game in 6 hours. Sorry to have to give this a negative vote. If you like supernatural stories with magic animals and no clear explanations, you may like this game. Otherwise you may not. Pros: good graphics, only two glitches and one crash, all at the end. Cons: supernatural, out-of-place combat. It's a running simulator. Sometimes you run through nice leafy green places, other times dark scary places. Stuff happens, and mostly you just observing it. You're a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I guess thats not a game for everyone. Its some kind of story-driven walking simulator / exploration game with very beautiful graphics and music. Its just a game to relax and maybe you will be touched by the story. For me the visuals are stunning and i really liked them from the beginning until the end, starting from the beautiful environment up to the spiritual design of the family we are following. The story on the other hand was a lttle bit too slow paced for me and also sometimes too…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My husband watched me play this game expecting me to fall in love with the Companion Cube and was MORTIFIED when I HATED it because it felt like a clingy boyfriend to me! So much for my feminine nurturing instincts, I guess!
negative · AI labelView post →I was so hyped for this game to be excellent, but I was bored by the first act. Great visuals can't make up for a confusing story and repetitive gameplay. I'm sorry, but I won't recommend this game to anyone.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The visuals are amazing. I really wanted this to be a positive review but the story did not capture my interest at all and I was already bored after the prologue. It was not for me, unfortunately.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story is good, the atmosphere is quite immersive and the soundtrack is incredible. The gameplay can be rather redundant, but it's a chill, relaxing game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i didnt understand the story at all but the game is beautiful and its fun to explore and collect shiny particles

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I personally love atmospheric games like this, which allow you to roam and look at the beautiful scenery (Act V's area was my favorite). Just a nice game to sit back and relax to. A very well spent 6 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played a bit of this game so far, and have to say AMAZING !!!! It reminds me of a few of my other fav games. More to come when played further....
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →</3 Sad to see so much GenAI in the Companion Falls for You sale. That said, love to see the reviews that point out how bad the game play is for those games that use GenAI. It's almost like game development is stunted when passion is filled in artificially.
neutral · AI labelView post →A charming little adventure game with an interesting story and BOOMING aesthetics. Be warned that the game is not very optimized though, so you'll need a beefy PC to make it look like the trailers. On the Steam Deck it runs like a Switch game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another indie developer makes a "game" with animals wondering around a dazzling environment, full of stunning over-saturated colors from a unity asset shader in a non-interactive world of generic props and no gameplay with that same boring soft piano song that you already knew was going to be there before you started it! Kill me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The spirit creatures and the wips’ dancing lights are so well animated. The story told through memories is really poetic. The voice acting delivers. The locations are breathtaking. The soundtrack is relaxing. The camera movement is dynamic. The controls are so fun to learn and customize. Contemplative, beautiful and healing. Exactly what I needed. Thank you, dev ^^
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Companion is a gorgeous game, filled with a beautifully detailed world, gorgeous music that fits perfectly with each scenario, and a story that is heartbreaking but full of hope and leaving you wanting more with unanswered questions that could only be answered with a sequel. There are a few bugs here and there, nothing gamebreaking, mostly either annoying or highly amusing. The jumping animation is a bit wonky but I'm not complaining. One that I would call more a design flaw though, is it's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A hidden gem of a game with some of the most incredibly stunning visuals, and gorgeous music. An interesting story-line told through memories you can find along the way as you walk through a world of spirits. The story isn't fully explained so it allows your mind to wander and perhaps insert your own memories or feelings of similar situations you have faced. A really great game, not too long to 100% complete, with the option of going back to previously completed levels if you missed something.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first hour and chapter I was a bit lost. Didn't really get the story but continued playing and it made more and more sense Relaxing gameplay with a lovely ost and smooth colour schemes.. Not a challenging game at all, but sometimes it's just nice to run around in the nature just enjoying the view. A minus would be that some of the achievements seems to be bugged for me even when trying some tricks using guides.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good catch for those looking for soothing calm atmospheric experience. visuals are great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →stunning aesthetics, i love all the animals and the characters, its all so well animated. shame its a bit repetitive, tho i like kinda slower paced games. would recommend :D fajne jednym slowem
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolutely gorgeous game. 10/10 rating for the feelings alone, I can't wait to dive more into this story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Am I the only one not getting the point of this... well... let's call it game? Why collecting spirit, why summon animals?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came across this game in a game dev subreddit and fell in love with it. I wish-listed and finally for summer sale, happily made the purchase. The game is beautiful with compelling graphics and music. It is very relaxing to play and just take a step back from life. The plot at times can be a bit confusing with some holes and unrealistic dialogue that make it less immersive. You could say some parts are 'cheesy', however, the game is successful in still conveying the chosen emotions very well.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute stunning visual and audio! A perfect game for those who are looking for a chill, relaxing and exploration game. The controls are great too! I really love the dash ability. Different levels also have very distinct visual. The developer is also very open to feedbacks and continously improve the game overtime, really appreciate it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stunning premise, poor execution Summary ; TLDR Stellar visuals, music composition and voice acting. Unfortunately, the voice acting is hindered by unnatural, lackluster dialogue. It has convoluted and unfinished story telling, unsatisfying sometimes purposeless game play mechanics, bugs and annoyances; none that are gamebreaking just exit to main menu fix. As well as, it's just a bit too long and too ambitous with world size for monotonous gameplay. Look, give it a go if it's on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a beautiful graphics. The family story is interesting. Soothing background music and dialogues makes the memories more lively. As everyone says, its walking simulator. Just roam around the world, and enjoy the scenery. Memories are fragmented and becomes difficult to know what exactly story is. One has to read forums to understand what’s going on with the family.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr If you like walking sims, and don't want to 100%, then I actually would recommend. Otherwise, steer clear unless there's a sale, or you're passionate about supporting solo devs. I'll be following Fazzio in the future for sure. As other's have said, it has a somewhat compelling story, and the visuals are nice (though the saturation and bloom could be reduced a bunch.) Where this game falls short is in the gameplay, which I can only describe as being less "play" and more "game". Like, it's…

neutral · AI labelView post →better than walking simulation
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's okay. Left me cold. Tutorial info was never very well translated.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Companion is an atmospheric adventure that favors emotion, exploration, and introspection over traditional action-oriented gameplay. Set within a mystical realm that exists between life and death, the game casts players as a spiritual fox whose purpose gradually unfolds through an intimate journey filled with symbolism and quiet storytelling. Instead of relying on dramatic conflicts or fast-paced mechanics, it encourages players to immerse themselves in a serene world where every landscape,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →good story and I love the graphics of the game. The music is very relaxing. I like how very chill the game is and where you have no worries through the game. Just something fun to play.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art work and music are both beautiful, and the game play is mostly relaxing (which I like). The story seems to jump around, but my guess is that sequential time doesn't exist given it's about witnessing memories mostly, and memories don't come to us sequentially. The one thing (two things actually) I wasn't ready for was what I call the boss levels with the ash-monsters. The game is just so chill up to the first level of battle, and it was a bit of a surprise, but once you know how to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Graphics are really pretty and the map design is great. Exploring the world feels nice and relaxing. Gameplay is light and calm, which makes the game very enjoyable. The story can be a little unclear at times, but it doesn’t really hurt the experience. Overall, the atmosphere and visuals make it worth playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's get the good out of the way: The music is AMAZING, the kind of uplifting track that makes you want to get out there and explore. Now if only the rest of is matched the mood. The is very little "gameplay" besides a few areas that need you to jump (clunkily, I might add) to climb up them. Each collectable you find automatically spawns a wisp to lead you to the next, and if you somehow manage to loose the one you're following, you can summon a new one at almost no cost. And the…
