What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (215 of 244 positive).
Players praise the nostalgic Gameboy-era style and deep JRPG mechanics. [1][2][3] The humor is divisive, with some finding it juvenile and others enjoying it. [4][5][6]

I feel like I was an idiot for believing the 90% positive rating, or by being fooled by the "not your mother's pokemon!" advertising. Make no mistake: this game might have good gameplay, but the writing is some of the most unfunny garbage I've ever had the displeasure of reading. Apparently, the devs think that swearing for swearing's sake is enough to make a game funny. There's no jokes. There's no actual humor. …

Forest Nymph Used Swallow. You can pick between a dog or a cat. They're adorable and precious. The game is like an irreverent vulgar sarcastic mashup of all the ♥♥♥♥ you played as a kid. But it's not just a meme it's actually got solid gameplay and definitely hits the right spot on the wandering around doing random pokemon battles vibe. Except you are the pokemon, and you learn new moves by equipping stuff and then …

Don't let the simple visual fool you! This is the heavyweight JRPG! (you can easily spend +40 hours in there). What starts as a simple joke quickly turns into deep social satire with existential questions, tactical battles, many side quests, pop-culture references, and secrets. It all feels like Quentin Tarantino, Terry Gilliam, and Darren Aronofsky decided to make an indie game!!! As a huge JRPG fan, this is simply …

An unhinged Canadian RPG where axolotls are deadly, poutine might save your life, and mimics are basically a hate crime. If you're a Pokemon fan with a love for morbid gags, or a Doom & Destiny nostalgic craving more pixelated chaos, this one’s for you. The Edge of Allegoria is a crude, absurd, and oddly charming 20-hours game if you can overlook some jokes that feel ripped from a middle school lunch table. Combat …

The dev for this game is more involved with his community than any other dev i've ever seen. He pretty much responds to every question, and constantly patches the game, sometimes multiple times a day. Player reports a bug in discussion, patch a couple hours later. Never seen anything like it. The game is obviously hit or miss, either you love this style of game or its not for you, but it's made with love, and thats …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't come into The Edge of Allegoria with very high expectations. The game is partially supposed to be a parody of Pokemon, and maybe a bit of other Gameboy era JRPGs. It's clear from the Steam store that you are getting a game with intentionally juvenile humor and simple combat, so I came in just hoping for a decent game to play while listening to podcasts. You fight one on one in basic command-based JRPG combat and learn new skills/increase stats by mastering weapons and armor. That's…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's a recommend, even though it's ultimately not for me. This is something I would've played when I was 13 - both because it's GameBoy Colour vibes, but also because a lot of what the game calls "adult humour" is mostly what a 13-year old would think is "adult humour" (at least for my taste). There's definitely quite a few laughs from time to time, but after a while I ran out of steam with the gameplay grind not changing much and the humour staying the same throughout. I really enjoy the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted so badly to like this game. It's very clear that a lot of love and effort was put in, and the sheer amount of cool enemies, spectacular pixel art, abilities, and creative ways to combo your abilities is crazy! Definitely recommend the title if that's your jam. It was not my jam. The battles themselves were alright; once you get more abilities, you can really play with a bunch of strategies, and that's fun! The problem was outside of battles. There's a clear format going on, and so for…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished the game. It was pretty solid, and I had a great time playing it. The game is obviously NOT for kids, but its also not over the top vulgar like some games in my opinion. The story isn't actually that bad, it was enough the keep me interested and wondering what was to come. Mastering weapons and finding out the best skill combos feels great. From time to time you may find yourself lost not knowing where to go. I didn't have too much trouble with this, but some people did. I…

neutral · AI labelView post →Utterly boring and shallow as a glass of water. Imagine, if you will, making a joke and then repeating it for 100 hours. All with a mind dulling green palette, clunky ass Pokemon controls, and boring, slow combat. If you play the game for 20 minutes, the rest of the game is exactly the same. Aside from some occasionally interesting visual effects, there is nothing here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game could be fun, but the battles are way too difficult at the beginning. I battled a moose that was 1 level below me, had to use every piece of food that I had, and it still killed me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are parts and ideas that are interesting but the game is very frustrating in the beginning and very repetitive later on. The Pokemon battle system doesn't work as well when its just you and not 5 other characters after you. The humor gets real old real fast and the combat and equipment system ultimately boil down to using the same stuff and moves for most of the game. I wouldn't recommend even on sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recommend this game but feel it is necessary to inform people of one big thing that sadly ruined the game for me, however I know this is a issue few will have but do still want to warn people of it. This game has level scaling foes levels are decided based off what level you are when you enter a area same with bosses. For me this ruined leveling for me since the only way to out level a area or boss is to first get to said area then leave to level, however this mean the next area will just be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get it on a considerably discounted sale. The Edge of Allegoria is a pokemon-like game with a joke around every corner. Initially, there are a bunch of laughs to be had, though the novelty and sense of humour in a game like this eventually wear off. It has a gear system simple enough to keep your buttonmashing fingertips happy; you find equipment, you master equipment, and the stats are permanently applied to your character. Has some good moments. The Price Tag... I'm someone who tries to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Edge of Allegoria might like like a nice, funny Game-Boy-style adventure, but it sure isn't. The is out on Switch now and I had the joy to work in the localization last year. Beware: The game's a "bit" bawdy in places. www.nintendo.com/de-de/Spiele...
neutral · AI labelView post →This game cured my depression and gave me a heaping helping of nostalgia that i didn't know i needed. Hidden gem if you have the sense of humor for it. Horse Master Away. Edit: I just finished my first playthrough, and I'm blown away. A more serious review: Don't let the jokes turn you away from this, it's a very well made game, you can tell a lot of love and effort went into it. 10/10. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm a sucker for Gameboy era games, so this game's style drew me in immediately. And, so far, I'm pleased to say I'm really enjoying what the game has to offer. From the crass humor to the depth of the JRPG mechanics, I feel like the game really commits to the bit and provides some good fun in the meantime. Mechanically and spiritually, the game is a lot like Pokémon. Your character just so happens to be the one using the moves and learning the skills this time around. There are a few…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very solid turn based rpg in Gameboy style graphics, with a pretty solid combat system that have more depth than you might think at first. There are not really any equipment choices, you want to have everything for their permanent stats anyway but there are a few different skill builds you can go for. But towards the end three are a few that are so ridiculously overpowered that you really don't need to use anything else, the guitar that get exponentially more powerful for each time you use it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"The Edge of Allegoria" on Steam and Switch is amazing
positive · AI labelView post →The irony of the intentionally excessive profanity seems to be lost on the people leaving negative reviews. Pokemon was overly childish and hand-holdy, and after years of being repetitively exposed to that, the polar opposite is cathartic. The developer went for the complete inverse of that dialogue, and it was brilliant and obviously intentional. There are even references to the self awareness within the game if you talk to certain NPCS. If you started with Pokemon Yellow / Red / Blue or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Looking on the surface this game looks like a crude parody of jrpgs. When you look inside you realize...its a crude parody of jrpgs with dark humor, terrible people, and some of the most safe for work lewd enemies you've ever beaten to death. This game is really good at what it does, from the design, the music (that even changes based on what status affliction you have) the comedy, and the story which has you basically helping society as a whole. Yeah this game is deeper than it looks while…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely love it. It’s like playing Pokémon Red for the first time again, but at 33.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first backed Kickstarter project, and man, I was not disappointed! The game has be hilarious AF, and glad to see what happens next. I did restart my save after finding out I can have a rat instead of a dog. I still don't find any capybaras or the guy that is looking for one yet, but if you find him, maybe you can help? I also got Eternal Damnation at one point in the game, and my kids say I deserve it. Yes! It is fun for the whole family! ...If they are at least age 18+. Lots of swearing in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really want to enjoy this, but the fact that grinding for mastery on every weapon / equipment and being one level higher than the first boss and still getting steamrolled by BS double swings, CRITS, and full health bar attacks while only being able to just constantly heal is really irritating. That's not intuitive combat, there is no lesson to learn or skill/ability to gain an edge when the boss is constantly faster than you, regardless of your equipment or stats. I'm not going to keep Grinding…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% Achievement review - an absolutely great JRPG style parody game. This has OG Pokémon Red and Blue Gameboy graphics and references but no monster catching, a lot of foul language and potty humor. You start as a humble fisherman who can't fish worth a ♥♥♥♥ and get roped into saving the world or something? I dunno. Don't really feel like much of a hero and half the towns you leave worse than when you go there, but hey. There are lots of side quests, hidden areas, crossovers, pop culture…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →**mon at it's finest, but different! The BEST conversations, interesting loot, a lot of secrets and enough dungeons to explore. I missed a bit the fighting complexy and taming or sth like that would be a thing for sure, but I'm also pretty satisfied in the way the game is currently :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In just under 2 hours (7pm Pacific/10 ET) it's time to get back to the Edge of Allegoria! Come for the indie game vibes, stay for the social commentary and general silliness. Clip related www.twitch.tv/theanimation... #indiegames #vtuber
neutral · AI labelView post →Super interesting game. It's a sometimes hyper crass Earthbound like, with gameplay elements pulled from Riviera the Promised land, and presentation straight from Pokemon. The often extreme vulgarity will be a sticking point with some people, and I'll admit that I didn't always care for it. It does lighten up eventually, and expands the scope of the plot really well as it goes on. Allegoria is a really interesting setting with plenty of lore to dig into, and the ending is surprisingly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game for fans of old school pokemon games, the humor sadly falls off in the second half of the game, taking itself a little too serious. Still enjoyed my time in Allegoria, hope for a sequel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Edge of Allegoria is the most unhinged game that I ever played. It looks and feels like Pokemon, but it's really Deadpool meets South Park. theswitcheffect.net/2025/09/revi...

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my best friends gifted this to me. Holy crap am I glad he did. This scratches my Millennial stupid-comedy / GameBoy Pokemon-obsessed nostalgia itch so much while also adding an easy to understand but fun combat system. I can't stop playing this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Watch the trailer first to see if you like the humor. If you are looking for an edgy pokemon like game, look no further! This game has so much love put into it! Shoutout to dev Joe who frequents the discussion board to help anyone with questions. He replied in under 24 hours regarding the last two items I needed to 100% Absolutely worth the price!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found it funny when I was stoned, I haven't tried it sober yet.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game took all the not so fun grindy parts out of Pokemon, and added a lot of extremely crass and frankly, not funny, humor to pad it for an adult audience. That being said, the developer should not pursue a job in stand up comedy or any comedy for that matter, because this humor seems to be tailored for the neckbeards. I was extremely uncomfortable with a lot of the sexual poses that the enemies were making, as well as the main character's comments on what they would do to said creature.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game lets me have a pet rat, make goblins burn my house down as revenge, and cuck a man. I'm in the second town.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fell in love with this game the instant I watched the trailer, even more so after 5 hrs in the demo. The humor is on point and never ending, there are all sorts of little tidbits in the world that give it attitude. The gameplay is a great homage to classic GBA Pokemon combat combined with amazing pixel animations and a well-crafted status effect system. There's nods to pop culture that I grew up on sprinkled everywhere. Play it, love it, can't get enough of it.

neutral · AI labelView post →Great game, with minor bugs. It plays out like a GB Pokemon game without the captures and the puzzles do get harder the longer you play. The little animations details help grab attention to anything that you may not see or things you should spot. All in all great for gameplay and references. Remember to save your game... I beat the boss at the end didn't save since 5 hours into the game. I was level 104 I'm back down to 17.. save your game.... autosaves don't exist... save your game

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Phenomenal. No notes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely Vulgar.... and I love it! - Only an hour in so far - but for a retro feeling RPG reminiscent of the early Gameboy days (but without the need for a screen torch to see in the dark) and a healthy dose of vulgarity, humour and great game-play mechanics, great dialogue and plenty of surprises - I can already recommend this game highly! Can't wait to play more of this!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great fun so far. Been enjoying the visuals and combat quite a bit. Has a very fair challenge to it, particularly the boss battles. Main strengths for me is the story and music. There are some moments in the game that the dialogue seems normal, and then cracks a very well written dark humour joke. The music is so nostalgic that it brings me back to the old Gameboy classics. Really recommend this for more mature gamers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Heya folks, here's a first set of screenshots featuring an indie RPG called The Edge of Allegoria So, this game may look like Pokemon but it's very adult oriented lols. There's also no creature collecting in the game. #theedgeofallegoria #videogames #indiegames #rpg #screenshots
neutral · AI labelView post →While I liked the humor, the game has some grind resembling the early pokemon games. And with attack effects not obviously stated "while fighting" you have to look them up out of fight and memorize them. Nope.
