I absolutely LOVE this game, but it's not for everyone. Look, I'll cut straight to it - The Forever Winter is phenomenal. The atmosphere is suffocating in the best way possible, the premise of being a nobody scavenger in a 50 year war between massive superpowers is incredibly unique, and the world building is some of the best I've ever experienced in a game. The graphics and art direction? Top tier. This game nails …

You missed out already. Allow me to explain. Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But would I recommend this game to anyone in its current state? Absolutely not. Why I wouldn't recommend it yet is how the Devs are handling things. The game released in a horrible state, the hot fixes and new updates have definitely made the game a lot more enjoyable and playable overall but they are treating the game like it was fully released instead of still being in early access. They've released a handful of DLCs, new questlines, guns etc. Instead of…

EDIT: (4/13/26) — The developers have responded to my review. Taking into consideration their response, and their more exhaustive update on their Discord, I am, cautiously, optimistic about the future of the game. In that update they address some of the problems we've had with the game — The cost to enter the tunnels, Hunter Killer teams being sent after you for looting too much, Ashen Mesa and Scorched Enclave being made free to enter again, adjusted spawn rates for the tunnels, the very real…

Judging this game by an aesthetic: 10/10 Judging this game by how fun it is to play: 2/10 It is very rarely rewarding, and usually a run ends up being a huge waste of time. It definitely has potential, but as it is now there is little reason to play other than the cool art and concepts. Two things that I think (in my unprofessional opinion) should be fixed/changed in order to make this game wayyyy more enjoyable: - It's okay for the game to be hard, but sometimes the AI focuses on you way…

Disappointing and Misleading Forever Winter is simply not the game it was advertised to be. The promise of being a small fish in a massive apocalypse completely falls apart once you actually play it. Instead of surviving in a living, dangerous world, you are constantly reminded that the apocalypse is being run by braindead AI that behaves in predictable and immersion breaking ways. The battlefield never feels dynamic or threatening. Enemy behavior is easy to read, encounters play out the same…

The current meta is to walk 50 feet out of spawn in tunnel 1, fill your pack and turn around and experience less than 1% of the game. That's right, the game punishes you for wanting to see more of it. The tunnels update made it so every single map (some of which are quite nice) is put in a linear series with procedurally generated tunnel segments between them (ala Nitrome's Leap Day). The average map can be completed in 3-15 minutes and tunnels typically take 30-45 minutes. However, there is…

I'll start with the conclusion to save you time. Game has potential, but potential is meaningless until it is realized. Come back in about a year and check on the game then. This is still very much an early Alpha state, it is going to have issues, and generally feel incomplete. I hope that in one to two years time I can come back and make this a recommendation. Now the yapping, I'll try to keep it brief. Game has a captivating setting, with unique art and ideas that would make it stand out…

The gunplay is good The gameplay loop is alright, could be better missions. Amazing concept, Awesome art design, good game play loop. All consistently ruined by bad decisions. First it was water being a mobile game mechanic that was tied to real time that hurt people with jobs or busy lives. Then they added a stamina system which could have been fine if it were balanced right, but NOPE it only lets you run for about 5 seconds when it should be more like 20 seconds AT BASE! consistently the devs find ways to take a good thing and make it into a slog. The recent…

I wish Steam had a “mixed” review option, because I’m genuinely torn on this game. TFW has an artstyle, soundtrack and set of levels that really nails what it's going for. But, the whole "you are not that guy" premise starts to collapse once the game inevitably escalates you into being that guy. The punishments for butchering dozens of enemies or loot-goblining your way across the battlefield is underwhelming at best - I've never really felt threatened by any of the hunter-killer units the…

I got this game when it first released for Early Access. It wasn't great, but it was reasonably playable despite many bugs and I would have recommended people buy and support the extremely small dev team even though I wasn't a fan of the water "tamagochii" feature, I could live with it as it was. I've just updated the game and jumped in. First off; I'm glad they've removed the out-of-game tick down of water. I no longer feel pressured into logging in one day just to top off water supplies…

Come back when it's fully released and read some reviews then. The game's in a ridiculous state right now. Much of the game's content is gated behind a tedious looting and crafting mechanic. You frequently lose 1/2 hour or more of progress due to mechanics you didn't know about, or lethal bugs. Many of the games mechanics are cryptic or misleading. I don't think of the game as Nintendo Hard, I think it's on Sadistic Difficulty. For every good thing I can name, there's a more severe…

I really want to like this game, it has a lot going for it, but there's too many massive bugs and mechanics that take the fun right out of it after a while. Has promise, but after about 2 years it doesn't seem to have made much progress and design choices have gone against the original theme of the game. -In Multiplayer roughly every 3rd match your game crashes, very rarely happens in single player. -In Multiplayer everyone but host has their gun shoot up to 30 degrees to the right of where…

When it is, it's in miniscule ways that don't affect the grand scheme of the game. This is a game that has been very fun in the past. Previously, you could visit any location and when you extracted from a location, you would just return to your "home base" after. Now, the map has been given more of a structure(which could eventually be a very positive change), however going to any location after the first two that are available requires you to seemingly complete 4 to 6 locations in a row before you're given another chance to return home. The game is not an easy game, and…

While the idea of the game is great and innovative, especially paired with art direction, the main issue is that gameplay-wise it's very, very raw. It is okay for Early Access, but the thing is that, judging by what I saw in the game (keep in mind that it was published in 2024, plus its potential "longevity" is somewhat dependent on the player base since it has an online component), most likely, it won't be able to get "fixed" enough to become significantly better after leaving EA. But the actual meat of the game? The GAMEPLAY? Absolute trash. 1. Entire Premise about not being 'that guy' is false. Hyperbolic take: concept artists tried to make a game, but don't have the requisite skills to make it happen. Neat ideas, gorgeous visuals, and terrible gameplay execution at every turn. I wish I could've refunded it, but because I was kind and gave the devs the benefit of the doubt and tried time and time again to understand the game and see if the problem was me, or not, I'm now well past the refund window. Have been a supporter from the start. The game has gone downhill fast. the enemies should ignore you as you are a scavenger, but no they see you as a number one priority to kill. Tanks, Helis, mechs, and any other large miltary vehicles should not notice you as you are not part of the war. I dont know where they are going with this but it is no longer fun. genuinely disappointed. to be brief, i've been interested in this game since I saw Riloe's very first video on it. i bought forever winter on launch day and couldn't run it at the time. it was on sale recently so i tried it again, and to give the studio credit, i runs MUCH better than launch. the entire concept and direction of forever winter is great, aaand that is where my positives end. i cannot believe how much i was baited into thinking this game was good just by a fancy presentation by a…

We gotta figure it out. I got over 100 hours of gameplay so im not a hater. but, im really not enjoying the game like i use to. My frames are horrible, they never been bad. I went to the wiki and adjusted everything to the T. Ive made my sacrifices with the time ive wasted playing a game that isnt playable. I know its a earlier access but, you should know the game is not running like it use to and i feel like you guys can fix it. The tunnel system has killed me more than any enemy in any…

You can stealth a majority of the raid but when you call extract groups of enemies spawn on you. What's the point then?

Forever Winter: the game where you're a scavenger trying to avoid enemies on an open battle field, because you're "not that guy", meanwhile every possible area that you need to loot/traverse is filled with patrols who just "happen" to spawn in and immediately wander over to where you are. You CAN fight back, as even being spotted for a few seconds will result in soldiers abandoning their active war to chase a random scav, but when you DO defend yourself, you will be hunted down by some of the…

JESUS CHRIST THIS IS SO HARD TO LOVE RIGHT NOW Updated review after Mid-May updates: FINALLY some good QOL. It's far from being perfect, but I think it's STARTING to head into the right direction. I think if Devs can keep those QOLs coming in HARD and maybe plan on a rehaul, this game might become a success. There's BIG work ahead of them though. Like, massive work... So I hope they're going to keep it up This game is still far from being great, but its made advancements recently where I…

Currently as of 29/08/26 the game has become unplayable. In Short: -Enemy Ai spots you twice as fast, they react to your footsteps three times as fast, if you shoot any member of the faction then the entire map associated with that faction will know your position and hunt you down. -Noticed far more lag in game (Not sure if related or a bug on my side but Scavs run out of stamina faster) -Feels like there is an increased amount of enemy spawns -The NSN feels a bit better to shoot with a…

To give you some context, I'm about 60 years old and I usually play games like S.T.A.K.E.R., Assassin's Creed, Will to Live… And by accident, I stumbled upon Forever Winter. It has everything I love: beautiful graphics, a blend of science fiction and comics… And above all, I love the fact that it feels like a game and not reality. Now, there is one criticism I can make: the explanation of the game mechanics is really, really poorly done. After 20 hours, I'm only just starting to understand…

Great art, never seen anything like it, it's a digital art gallery. Boring game, never seen a meaninglesssly grindy game like it.

This game just received a massive update that changed how the game feels immensely. They FIXED THE AI, I have owned this game for years as I believe in the vision but it was in too much of an alpha state to enjoy before. That is no longer the case the enemy now moves and engages with the other ai like you expect it too. Also your guns are now actually damaging compared to earlier builds headshots are key. Something just clicked and now I cant put it down the UI is still clunky but much…

I'm not exactly sure how to write a review for this game. I've never really done this before. As you can see from my hours played, I have been enjoying this game for some time. Most of it has been from the first few months at launch; it's roughest state. The TL;DR is that I do recommend this game. I think it is in a good state right now. It's obviously not perfect (It's still in early access after all),but is heading in a good direction. If you want to know more of my opinions of the game, read…

It's neat but serves more as an art gallery than a game. Very pretty, but is very lacking. The developers don't really fix actual issues but rather skim the surface of a problem rather than actually figuring out what is causing it. I tried to love this game, but I just can't.

Beautiful artwork, but a hollow, boring, barely functional game that fills me with immense disappointment because the potential is there. My god it is THERE and I desperately want someone to rescue this beautiful game! Man they talked a huge game in their teaser trailers, acting like they're sick of the game industry and how they're going to do things better, and they just... softball this limp garbage. The AI is extremely rudimentary attempting to do something complex and failing every time.…

Don't get it twisted, this game is far from reaching it's 1.0 state. It's buggy, has issues with map geometry, suffers from sub-optimal performance, and needs to have it's questlines fleshed out more. That's just naming a few issues. However, if you're tired of formulaic AAA slop like me, there's so much that Forever Winter does right. World design here is off the charts, almost carrying the game on it's own, this has become my favorite grimdark setting. The soundtrack is a clear 10/10. And…

IF I WAS ABLE TO HAVE (1) REQUEST VIEWED BY THE DEV'S It's this. May we get subtitles? The wise words of the protagonists we use. The SHAMAN especially says some awesome things. Even so, I personally was trying to expand on the game's lore, by listening to some of the things he was saying. On the same subject, say in the unlikely even I got your attention, the OPPORTUNITY for narrative is here definitely. -the world looks amazing, -it's immersive, -importantly, IT'S POSSIBLE to play…

It's a cool idea for a game and I've had some fun runs with other players once, but only once. I don't know how to actually find other people to play this, 99.999999999999999% of "lobbies" you will find are people just AFK at home base. And then there are still tons of huge debilitating glitches and bugs. I support the idea of buying this game just to support interesting creative devs, but this game still needs a bunch more work, so buyer beware.

cool concept, ♥♥♥♥ execution. spend 90% of the game wandering around admiring how cool everything is just to get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ at extract every single time because the developers think its necessary to put 1300 cyborgs guarding it and 3 auto turrets that are super hard to destroy right at the extract as well as a squad of heavily armored guys patrolling it. just kinda wastes your time at that point which you could use actually having fun doing anything else. the giant battlezones were cool enough for…

If you've ever played Tarkov SP mod and you like the mechanics of the game, imagine that with a feeling of fear like in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the terror and scale (to an extent) of Warhammer and a dark greyscaled morbid atmosphere. This game is a lot of things I wish more games would be now-a-days. It has passion, it has originality, it has great lore, and it has plenty of depth. I completely forgot this is even early access, as it really doesn't feel even close to unfinished like the majority of…

Let's address the elephant in the room. ARC Raiders just came out and if you're looking for an extraction shooter in a unique sci fi setting you're inevitably comparing these two. Forever Winter is currently still in early access. The movement is stiff. They recently added more platforming to the game with the addition of the tunnels and it really sucks to die and lose your stuff and especially leave your team to go off and do an entire mission without you just because you missed a tiny jump…
