What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 139 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (220 of 270 positive).
Players praise the game's unique blend of fast-paced action and turn-based strategy. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the combat system engaging but note balance issues with shields and stuns. [4][5][6] The game is widely recommended for its addictive gameplay and deep progression. [7][8][9]

Really neat idea for a game and I see some of the reviews referencing other games that I have not played before. This is my first exposure to a game like this. I generally enjoy turn-based RPGs, so I felt this was up my alley. I only put 30 minutes in and ended up putting it down because I just wasn't enjoying the style of the gameplay rhythm very much. The bottom line is I just didn't enjoy assigning my equipment …

Disclaimer: I've spent a good amount of time with the demo and have progressed to the 4th stage. Overview: This game is a blast! Whether I'm dying or clearing a run, I'm constantly drawn back for another round. The urge to discover new builds and unlock items through the quest system keeps the game play fresh and exciting. With ample content and clever item synergies, this game promises a long-lasting and varied …

Holy cow, this is an incredible game. Like Shogun Showdown and Hades had a baby but it was also super unique and different. Loving it so far. Nice incremental meta progression that aids in runs, great relics and weapons, and nice in-run upgrade system. Love the almost “puzzle” aspect of combat when you have 4 separate directional weapons and hazards and enemies slowly plodding towards you. Definite must buy for …

Simple But Addicting Things I Like About The Land Beneath Us: 1. Fast-paced, tile-based, turn-based roguelite. Every move is a turn. You can go as fast as you can, but it is always better to take it slow and observe your surroundings. 2. You can assign four weapons to your arrow keys. Players need to pay attention to the range of every weapon. Weapons that cover a single tile will move you in that direction when …

It is like combination of Hades + Into The Breach: rogue-lite adventure, but the combat is turn-based tactics. The best thing is that they made it feel very fast, while still requiring you to think. You move and attack with a single button press, and enemies move together with you, so you never wait (unless you want to). This allows you to make a turn in less than a second on easy levels and take all the time you …

89% of the 139 Steam reviewers we collected recommend The Land Beneath Us. The complaint that keeps coming up: shields and stuns are overpowered. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting game design. It's a game that you can play at your own pace. You can be quick and strike everything in your path or you can sit back, relax, and take your time to plan your strategy. Also, the art style is quite refreshing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Needs a bit of balancing but otherwise not a bad rouge-lite game. The shields are too OP as they block 1 instance of any damage. Getting stacks per kill and doubling overkill gets you maybe like 10-20 shields per round. You get to the final boss and I was almost at 100 stacks of that. Tanked all the damage and just kept attacking. Too easy. One con so far, also just as negatively OP is enemy stun. When you get stunned, you skip a turn. HOWEVER if they apply 2 STACKS or there is 2 enemies…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its missing something, I dont know what. Its like they have interesting things, but nothing is in depth enough to make me want to delve deeper. Too simple I would have to say the problem is.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game deserves more recognition. Unique and interesting turn-based combat system where the direction you move matters, both for direct attack and to power up spells by walking in special sequences (called Chips in the game). Good balance of challenge against unlocks as you progress.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is actually pretty enjoyable with fastpaced turnbased gameplay. But it baaadly needs a "save and exit" feature. I know runs aren't that long, but when you play maybe 20 minutes a day and are juggling 2-3 games depending on the amount of mental energy available, then it feels superbad to lose all your progress because you closed the game in the middle of a run.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The devs just decided to nerf some items/combos which, I assume, is just an act to keep you playing longer and does not help increase your enjoyment in any way.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It looks simple but it is actually challenging. 10/10 Bosses mechanics are well done and pretty different from each other, some are simple and easy to do with the right weapons, but even so sometimes RNG just gets to you to make ir harder. Even when you already got the hang of the gameplay, some maps, it will just kill you out of bad RNG. The game is fair, challenging and I really loved it, played until I got all achievements and still didn't get to test every weapon and relics the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →starts off strong, but gets incredibly annoying later on as it starts sticking you on smaller cluttered areas with more and more enemies with larger and larger attack patterns where the gameplay breaks down, while their health growth outscales your damage, and you run into rooms where there's literally nothing you can do to survive. roguelikes where an rng coinflip ends your run are not enjoyable, and the further you go the more of those you hit.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quick Description: -The Land Beneath Us is a roguelight turn based tactics game with a pretty cool visual style. While I was initially really intrigued by this game, the more that I have played it, the less consistent I have found the overall game design. I have only played for 3 hrs, but in those 3 hrs, I have had 3 winning runs (unlocking harder variations with each winning run), and have unlocked a decent amount of meta-progression. My biggest issue with this game is that so far it feels…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely polished and stylized roguelike with very gameplay reminescent of several systems put together (Necrodancer, Helldivers, Into the breach). Honestly what doesn't this game have? Awesome style, interesting characters with personality, an intriguing premise/lore, playstyles that cater to both careful planners or all out rushers and finally unique/innovative gameplay that is so far pretty well balanced and fair. Here's hoping the first hours will pave way to the next several hours!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this on my Xbox and Steam Deck. Worth, reminds me of necrodancers movement. Love the design
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm honestly surprised at how good and enjoyable The Land Beneath Us turned out to be. It has solid gameplay with a tight game loop and tasteful pixel art to boot. I've found myself on more than one occasion starting it up just to kill a few minutes while waiting for food in the oven or between meetings and subsequently losing track of time because I got so engrossed in playing in just a few minutes. If you're interested in story, TLBU has one, but it's much more compact compared to similar…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The turn-based roguelike gameplay is absolutely excellent and it makes this game 100% worth the asking price. It's classic roguelike grid hack-slash-and-loot that gets super complex by the third world, mixed with Roguelite permanent progression. It's very good! The dialogue, though? Ooooof, not for me. Millenial writing at its most obnoxious. But it's okay, just skip everything "Main PC" says and it's mostly passable. The fun gameplay is totally worth it.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →simple concept, well executed, with deeper than meets the eye options, I really hope this keeps developing because its a great time, criminally under-purchased/reviewed
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The devs understood what roguelikes are all about. The progression increases in complexity unlike other games that exclusively increase enemy hp and damage. The theming and music are adequately developed and the game has a way of presenting its characters and the general conflict/story. The background seems a little repetitive per section but the gameplay is so engaging you might never notice. There is an archive that you can access for reference. Runs have a way of feeling a bit too long for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game really addict for me. It's able to play with multiple styles. Gameplay is flow and smooth. There're a some little place to improve but overall really good. Also when move fast enough it look like action game which is amazing !!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Land Beneath Us is a roguelite dungeon crawler that manages to feel familiar and fresh at the same time, blending tactical grid-based combat with a striking pixel-art underworld inspired by Welsh mythology and sci-fi invention. Developed by FairPlay Studios and published by Dear Villagers and Gamirror Games, it places you in the role of Sven, a mechanical being equipped with Soul-Tech and sent into the depths of Annwn to find the lost Creator. While the overarching story is intentionally…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, simple to pick up but hard to master. Great aesthetic with a very cool branching story. Mechanics are clean and simple. Only major downsides at the moment are the inability to save mid run, given they are fairly short so not a huge deal but very annoying, and that tracking your ascension style difficulty is tough as there is no real indicator for what moon levels you have completed. (And possibly the inability to see multiple endings without starting a complete new save file? Not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like the *idea* of this game, but unfortunately I have a hard time recommending it because I feel like too much of its design is in conflict with itself. It's comprised of several different conceptually interesting directional/positioning systems, but at least in my opinion, they don't work in concert the way a good, high-intentionality design ought to. Too often you're making choices, where you might, say, pick a weapon with a knockback or teleport effect, thinking "this will buy me…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[ UwU ] The Land Beneath Us, kinda like Crypt of the Necrodancer combat without the rhythm part. Roguelike, turn-based, cool pixel art aesthetic and music 👍 got a good hour or so from the demo! #indiegame / #roguelike / #turnbased
positive · AI labelView post →very fun game and the play-style feels good. early game feels easy enough but late game feels too punishing. the rogue lite aspect of it feels fun but it does feel like some of the room layouts are just too small with enemies hitting you in an unfair way as most of the late game areas if you get hit once you're pretty much dead as they do the base damage + whatever status effect that follows. bosses are very fun to fight but feel way too easy compared to the normal room fights that you might…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gameplay: very fun and easy to learn, enemies have attack patterns you can learn and overcome similar to dark souls with a variety of weapons and relics(perks/items) to make different combos leading to huge replay value with different builds. Art/visual style: game has pixel art for its main gameplay with cartoon hand drawn art style for cutscenes and dialogue giving it a wizard of legend look. Overall so far the game is a refreshing take on the roguelike genre and I am looking forward to see…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A turn-based roguelike with an interesting theme. The gameplay mechanics are pretty nice, with the chip system and teleport feature being the game changers. I love the visual effects here; they're so bright, my eyes hurt! XD
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It surprised me, i was figuring on maybe playing it for an hour and returning it from repetition but it's pretty addictive. Progression is alright, not super grindy. It's a pretty challenging game so if you like a good turn based puzzle/rougelite this is one to check out for sure.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This roguelike game must have the a feature lets you continue where you left off, so that i little bit disappointed. Tbh i wish you have this feature soon TT.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i don't want to be too harsh on it but the main pc character and cringe dialogue is absolutely awful the game itself is pretty enjoyable, and i feel like you have a really good base but the uwuing computer is lol lastly i think if i tap twice in a direction it could resolve both turns back to back so i can quickly get through turns, it'd make it super fluid. like how in other games of this type you can tap twice and it'll instantly skip through to the second turn. currently it's really stiff…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There`s a lot of contents and mechanics to be unfold little-by-little in this game. I recommend playing the game pass the 1st world(first 2 boss) to experience the actual game play before you decide weather you like this game or not. Personally I`d say weapons/relics pool of the first few run are quite simple and that`s might make you get bored if you`re stuck in that stage but nonetheless addicting. at the time I wrote this review I`m at the second half of world 2, and after the chip skill…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nicely done and very addictive gameplay! Good Art, Good gameplay. I've played Demo before, I think it's simple to play. There are A LOT mechanics after Demo gameplay than i though Really Good Game and worth to spend time with it <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just wrapped up my 30+ hour journey with The Land Beneath Us, and what a ride it has been! The core mechanic is deceptively simple, but it forces you into deep-thinking sessions that are incredibly rewarding. The weapon variety is a standout feature—switching between melee and ranged options keeps every run fresh and exciting. For the completionists out there, the achievements are very straightforward and satisfying to collect. If you’re looking for a challenge, the level modifiers…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's absurd that if you leave the game you lose all your progress. Is it 1988? When was saving invented?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing concept executed flawlessly. So fun and satisfying in every way. Just give it a try!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A genuinely fresh game while not entirely unique, its a lot more than a re-skinned genre pusher game. Certainly casual game play but it gets far deeper into a more challenging competitive kind of game. A perfect game for deck/hand helds.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent game, a bit simmilar to crown trick might be a bit tough at first but it gets easier the further you progress game is probably less 10 hours to complete game is basically enter a bunch of rooms which are seperate battles, then kill 2 mini bosses and after that kill main boss of the area you are in, repeat till do this till you kill all bosses of all areas - big variety of weapons - average variety of relics (some builds are way better than others) - nice variety of spells tho…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This turn-based little gem needs more appreciation, not complex combat and systems in general, but quite enjoyable experience
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried out the game as a demo and really enjoyed a lot of the game play and was looking forward to trying out the full game once I had room in my game queue. However, when I had to quit the game mid run due to time constraints, I was surprised to find the next time I loaded it up that that run was gone. This was jarring enough that it has soured the game for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A turn-based rogue-like game is something I've not seen done before. It mimics the stylings of Crypt of the Necrodancer, where weapons and skills are assigned to directions, but without the franticness of a real-time beat to play to, this game feels a great deal more relaxed. A phenomenal game well worth the price!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm on the fence about it. I got it on sale so I'm not really bothered. I'll admit there is difficulty but I don't believe if I'd label it as "challenging". I got the hang of the rhythm of the game quickly but being a Roguelite, RNG can screw you quite a bit. Weapon variety and scaling needs work. Usually you'd expect to get stronger as you continue playing but the soul upgrades are a bit useless until you beat the first boss whom is more unforgiving than a Souls game, in my opinion. I don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, It was a little bit hard at the start because I didn't take the time to think but one you get the rythm of the game it start to realy absorb you. The big dowsnide for me is that the start lack variation of build but after the first boss is down, you unlock a lot of thing which gave the game it's full potential
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game seemed cool when watching it but when i play it i didnt feel it. price is too high for this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is so much fun! Really unique twist on Bard mode in Necrodancer but you could have 4 different weapons assigned to each directional movement. Lots of different weapons, relics, upgrades to choose from with cool unlock mechanic through challenge completion. Perfect difficulty level throughout the game. Nice soundtrack and visual style. Cool level, character, enemy, boss designs. The dialogue is not the greatest, but the story is interesting enough. Overall incredibly fun to…

Wow, the boss is really hard. I know how to handle it. 50 minutes pass. Seriously!? Let me try again. 60 minutes pass. Yeah, I finally arrived at the first world Boss. . . 61 minutes pass. Oops, my hand slipped too fast; let me try again. 80 minutes pass. Let's try defeating the first-world boss again. 82 minutes pass. Darn, I knocked myself back and died…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →played a bit of the demo before buying, pretty decent game for the price and i look forward to future updates
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Traditional old school rogelike combat and dungeon crawling mixed with new school roguelite metaprogression & itemization (artifacts, relics, boons, items. whatever your fav roguelite calls them). The game slowly introduces new concepts/tools to your kit so you get comfortable with each element before learning something new. Quite a refreshing game that i would recommend to anybody who likes grid based combat and rogelites/roguelikes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is very fun to play. it might be a little confusing at first but once you figure it out, it's a lot of fun. There are still some balance issues, but they're not too bad. In fact, they add to the rogue-lite charm of the game. I'm usually not a big fan of rogue-lite, but I really enjoyed this one because it's turn-based. It's even made me want to play more rogue-lite with this kind of gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →playing nonstop since this game is published until now. 3-4 hours maybe. ADDICTED. Rougelike with a pixel art style gameplay is not that easy and not too stressing to play. I played 4th stage now and it still get my attention. character design, NPC dialogue does attract me ( yeah mach-boy protagonist and in-game mommy NPC) thanks for the game, LOVE them so much !!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Land Beneath Us is a captivating gaming experience that offers players a fresh and enjoyable journey unlike any other. With its intuitive mechanics and versatile gameplay Whether you're into exploration, strategy, or simply seeking a comfortable gaming experience, this game delivers on all fronts, making it a must-play for anyone looking for a unique and rewarding adventure. uwu
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a huge fan of Roguelike. Overall just refreshing. It's really fun to play. Love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this to be a very refreshing variation of the rougelike genre. I feel like most games are about kiting and quick decisions, whereas this allows for more well thought out strategies and slower pacing to play exactly how you intend. Because of the grid system there were really cool weapon abilities. The chip system was a nice addition to reward well thought out movements. I do feel like the power creep came a little too fast and the game became fairly trivial pretty fast with the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →please help this game is too addictive and so much fun (counter build is so strong) worth it on sale
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →UPDATE 2/9/2026: I stepped away from this game for a time, and came back on a whim to find this response from you guys as well as an update that significantly decreased the required amount of counters for achievements, as well as overall making some of the more grindy achievements less grindy and more fun. Suffice to say I am blown away by the devs' attention to their game, and have updated my review to match. Fantastic game that has resolved the only gripe I had with it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More detail to come, but wanted this up... this game is fun in its demo, but its twenty times better in the full game. All of the things I said should have been added, or i hoped would be added, are part of the main game. And many I had not conceptualized. Its 7 bucks right now... you should do this thing. Great job devs
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoying it so far, the art is very good and gameplay gimmick is very interesting! Edit: now that i played it more i can say it is pretty good!! Gimmick makes it have a nice touch
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok, so this game is actually very nice. It's one of those easy to learn, very difficult to master. But there's more. Every boss you vanquish opens up new abilities and so the options are vast. So there is a lot of things happening and you get to learn them one by one. Fun game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun game. I enjoy the movement turn based games.
