Players praise the game's interconnected level design and nostalgic Dark Souls feel. [1][2][3] Many find the combat rough, with wonky hitboxes and enemy ganks. [2][4][5] The humorous satire and narrator are highlights for some reviewers. [6][7][8]

Many many times through my playthough of Last Hero of Nostalgaia I found myself thinking that if only the combat was better, then this would be a pretty great game. The building blocks are most definitely there, and it manages, for the most part, to be both funny and referential in its throwbacks to other games in the genre, but the wonky combat and enemy gank are incredibly frustrating. The concept is, in my …

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a competent Dark Souls clone, for better and for worse. Unfortunately it does not stand out because the main hook, the funny/parody/satire theme of it, is not used nearly enough. It's like a satire game complaining about sewer levels... while doing a sewer level. + Great Voice acting and writing. + Fun narrator. + Consistent graphic design. + So many references to so many games, with …

Amazing level design, pretty good lore, and acceptable combat( the weight and timing of basic actions like rolling and attacking is a little less polished than something even as old as the og demons souls) this is honestly my second favorite non from soft soulslike only being beaten by lies of p which is an incredible 11/10 game for me, so not really a fair comparasin. This is 100% worth your time if you want a game …

This game truly feels like Dark Souls 1. I would not hesitate to pay full price for a sequel. The level design is like Dark Souls 3, but is actually interconnected in a beautiful way. My only complaints: - Constant Microstutter. - Severe lack of bosses. - Hitboxes are wonky, especially when you are pressed right up against an opponent. - Enemies can stack up on each other, meaning you can't fight off a pack of basic …

Absolutely loved this game. The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is like a love letter to Dark Souls 1 with some new elements involved. The premise is unique as you navigate a souls-like realm with 2d and 3d elements and sometimes even a combination of the two. The use of the player model and its 2d elements was genius and a welcomed twist to the souls genre. Nostalgaia itself is wacky, tacky, and ominous all in one cleverly …

69% of the 175 Steam reviewers we collected recommend The Last Hero of Nostalgaia. The complaint that keeps coming up: combat is rough with wonky hitboxes. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
On Metacritic, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia received "generally favorable" reviews for the Windows version and "mixed or average" reviews for the Xbox Series X|S version. Reviewers generally praised the game's premise, narrator commentary, and visual transitions between pixelated and high-fidelity art, while criticism focused on combat that felt derivative, technical issues, and limited variety in enemies and environments. IGN called the game "a competent RPG" that does not add anything new to the soulslike formula, while praising its humor, world-building and visuals. Hardcore Gamer felt it had enough charm and challenge to appeal to soulslike fans, but said it lacked the depth of the games…

60 of 204 · most liked firstThis game is simply annoying. No other way around it. The game in itself is fine, but the achievements? the questlines? the NPCs? the hitboxes? Simply frustrating. Beat the game without the help from other NPCs, that doesn't mean beating the game, that means doing a questline while ignoring some NPCs for the boss fights. How do I know? Because people complained and devs did a bethesda and said, oh no, this is a feature. Speed run achievement cannot be done on new game+. The storylines…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This review is going to be my thoughts as they come, so here we go. I played as a Randomaster, and let me tell you: the Luck system is broken if you commit to it. Critical hits really make a difference. I don’t understand people complaining about short-range weapons — I finished the game using the Dagger of Cycles, which I believe is the shortest weapon in the game, and I barely had range issues. Sometimes with bosses, yes, but once you get used to staying face to face, you stop noticing it.…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just one reason really. Hitboxes. The amount of times i died because the hits just didnt register when standing in range of an enemy. I feel like if you stand as close as possible to an enemy the hits just dont register. In other aspects its alright, fairly clunky with the main thing being you going into ambushes over and over again and enemies swarming you. Its comparable to dark souls 1 in the way you have to manage stamina and combat in general, just less polished.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dark Souls and delightful retro aspects. If retro, poor graphics and suffering and striving for the win isn't fitting dopamine right now, maybe no good. But if you like to earn your laurels, utilize brooms as pikes and read relic descriptions to unearth archaeological and political lore, and press on toward becoming full of memory and high resolution, this game salutes you with its pixelated arms!

HOLY BAWLS I love it. it makes me want to go replay DS1 again if you like humor with your souls games this is for you
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute slopfest near the end. It's a shame the developers who made the introduction and first zone were murdered and replaced by incompetent ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. All the charm, skill, and passion just vanishes after the first boss and is replaced with Dark Souls 2 bumduckery. Complete waste of time and money. The developers couldn't even pay me to continue playing this trashfire.

neutral · AI labelView post →First things first: * This review contains minor spoilers. I've marked significant, concrete spoilers as such * I got this game at a discount and paid only 7.50 Euros * I played the game in coop with a friend (Coop is built in to the game and works out of the box without major issues) * Overall it took us around 13 hours to beat the game. Good things The game starts off really strong. The first few areas give off a great atmosphere. As someone who hasn't played other souls-like games…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game just dont recommend co-op. Had to alt f4 due to a map bug of getting frozen and beating a boss in co-op doesnt count for the non host, meaning youll have to then solo until you progress to where your duo is.. really put me off the game:/

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 very good souls like with " Little side-quests, lore, and nostalgia strewn about the world from the characters to the enemy's and every little detail in between. if you've got nostalgia on your mind, a souls-borne will to fight and enough patience... you too will be the hero Nostalgaia didn't want... but surely needed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun ideas, but some of the worst combat I have ever experienced.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10. The best souls like ive ever played im not even joking please play it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game's combat is rough but the story is fun to go though. There is no new game + so make sure you do the npc quest's before you beat that area boss's or you fail it for that save. There is co op but it very rough too if the host or the outher player dies you both die so do with that you wish but with all of this good game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →truly the most frustrating souls-like i've ever played and in a really bad way. occasionally some really cool smart moments but not worth it for 10 dollars including dlc get the last oricru for 3 dollars if your looking for a bad but in a good way kinda game that's souls-like
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Have you ever been playing Dark Souls and thought, “What this is really missing is the narrator from Stanley Parable.” Well, have I got the game for you… 😂
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty decent soulslike when it comes to narration/worldbuilding with some good level design, but kinda disappointing when it comes to combat. The story is a satire with some good jokes, although some just don't land well. Level design is something else; it's if FromSoftware managed to keep interconnected design through entirety of Dark Souls 1, although it felt like a bit too much sometimes. Warp is only available after defeating one of late-game bosses, good for remembering remaining…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know that there is a good game here somewhere, but It's hidden by just a bit too much jank.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →started off fun and funny, but then quickly became crap souls. controls janky, you move forward too much when attacking making you miss, yes you can lock on but that has missed a few times and screws you over when faced with multiple enemies. its slow too.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven’t been in a video game mood in a few weeks. I played maybe 16 hours of Sea of Stars, a hour of Gunbrella and 3 hours of The Last Hero of Nostalgaia. I used to game at least 2 hours a day but it’s been hard these past 3 months. Hopefully Lies of P snaps me out my funk!
neutral · AI labelView post →Lies of P is the top of my list for best soulslike game. This game is taking 2nd over everything else. It's that good imo. They killed it with this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →That's a very good satirical Souls-like game! Well, sure there is still some minor bugs, polishing, and QoL improvement that can be made, but it's a small game, and if you compare it to Dark Souls you've lost the point. There's so many video-game references, twisted humor, a game that hate you from the beginning, the narrator....uhh. Very fun to play!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love this game but possibly some of the worst hit reg in the entire gaming industry 10/10 would break my ♥♥♥♥ again.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Went on a bender and played most souls-like games out there. This one has a unique charm that's hard to pin down but I'd say it's overall cozy. There are some bugs every now and then but in a funny kind of way strengthens the themes of the game, just bear in mind you may get soft-locked sometimes and enjoy the ride. Really wish there was more! 8.7/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great game, destroyed by horrible controls. You are not fighting Bosses, you are fighting the controls. Good luck, you'll need it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Charming and ultimately fun when it is working. Sadly the game is incredibly broken and full of glitches. Only worth it on a steep sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is over-scoped. The world is too big, and the enemies not varied enough. There is a button that lets you toggle sprint, but that's not enough to make up for how much walking there is in this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is fantastic! The map design, the satire, the plot, the little quality of life improvements are genuine plus points. Although unpolished this game delivers a great and short experience into what I would expect from a souls like. Pros- - The map and world building is absolutely awe inspiring. The interconnectedness never makes you feel like you are switching between rooms with loading screens. It is almost seamless. - The lore and plot are handed out to the player really well. There…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh man.. this game. I LOVED this game, it's awesome and very stylized, the gameplay is fluid and the the bosses are fun and the items are, truly, nostalgic. BUT LHON suffers because the questlines are easily missed and it punishes you with the lack of New Game+. The achievements depend on you following the right sequence of events. Did you miss a step in Bold the Blade/Nameless Nhero's quest before the third boss? If you did, you have to restart the game if you want to try to remember every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine dark souls 1 but it's trying really hard to be funny and you miss half your attacks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very charming soulslike that wears its inspiration proudly on its sleeves. It has got some neat gimmicks or features that fit the setting perfectly: 2D to 3D transformations of the environment, weapon recalling system that calls you to explore the world even more, the interconnected world that has become a soulslike staple, but here it is done through backrooms of a theme park set. Overall, this amounts to a pretty enjoyable experience that leaves you hooked until the very end.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool concept. I love the sarcastic story telling, I love the funny little fact that you are a stick figure in a normal world...But this game is not fun. It feels like, the game, esp. the level design is working against the player.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →WTF Hitbox and I-Frame bro.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →very cool game, 90 percent of the weapons are references, the environment is deep and fun to explore, unique bosses. If u are new to souls and soulslike games it'll be difficult if u are not then it'll be easy or middle of the road. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting concept, terrible execution. Pre-set PC controls are pretty bad and with how janky the menu system is there's no way to check most of them let alone rebind them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven't really played any soulslikes before, except for beating the tower knight in Demon's Souls and reaching the big spider in the mines. Having said that, I will say that I had a really good time in this game! I might be reading too deep into the setting and story, but I felt it was really nice! [!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!] While it has the surface level sillyness, the idea of a hero spawning after a really long time makes me think of a returning player who wants to actually play…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Last Hero of Nostalgaia has such a unique premise and art style, but it's held back by probably the worst coding/hit detection/enemy design that I've experienced in my 20 years of gaming. This game, while AWESOME to look at, sucks at pretty much everything else it does. The UI? I'd give it a 3 out of 10, because at least I can kinda see what I'm doing if I get really close to my monitor and ruin my eyes. The combat? Trash. The camera lock on is shoddy at best and works to screw you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a cool game but not a lot we haven't seen before from a gameplay perspective. The combat is very, Dark Souls 2esque in clunkiness. The weapon system has some nice variety to it in that you need to work out riddles to find where to upgrade them. Overall, it's got some good and some bad but I think the good outweighs the bad by a fair margin.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a huge Fan of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, I highly recommend this game. The game doesn't take itself too seriously and is incredibly entertaining, with a humorous storyline and weapons that seem to have forgotten they are weapons. It features numerous references and Easter eggs from the Dark Souls games, and the co-op mode functions similarly. The only difference is that you don't have to summon yourself again after each death, but remain directly in the co-op world. The game isn't overly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →theres no reason to play it over ds2
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grinder as an insufferable slog of a fight, the next area has insufferable enemies with grab attacks being their only gimmick, I'm not sitting through this any longer than I already have.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The most fun a fan game make until now that i know, they know how to make a souls like game with humor
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →my favorite thing about games like this is that they have moments where there's absolutely no way for you to know what to do unless you look it up :) thanks for the fun ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I honestly want my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ money back
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really fun with a friend, plays pretty good. Does have some "jank" but it could be part of the game since it is called Nostalgaia after all.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let me start by saying I would absolutely recommend this game. Combat 7-8/10 Story 10/10 That being said, the last few areas were a little annoying but I don't know if that was part of the parody of "Souls" games, so...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The writing alone is worthy of a thumbs up, but the rest of the game is by no means bad. The combat is well executed, and it's a nice looking game. I do have some complaints, however, in that it's a bit buggy. A lot of the game's difficulty come's from jank collision mechanics. There also is pretty minor differences between the game's classes. Over all, I'd recommend it if you like Souls-Like games, and steer clear of it if you don't.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is good, funny and amazing, all at the same time. It is supposed to be a joke with the soulslike gente and it is very good at that, I played the game with a smile on my face the entire time. But even if the game is funny, it still a vert good soulslike, with tons of magic to learn, weapons and armor to collect and many different e builds, pretty solid, I loved it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice ideas and a fun story. But the combat (which makes up the majority of the game) is not only bland but very poorly executed. 4/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat is absolute garbage when dealing with more than one enemy. You just get stunlocked to death, and if you try to dodge to safety there is a braindead amount of recovery at the end of a dodge so enemies that relentlessly trail you will inevitably just kill you. P.S. Whoever designed the little scarecow enemies that backstab you and run away should be fired and made to crawl on a mile of legos on hardwood floor. By far the worse enemy design I've seen in a game this year.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought because of Prod. Good game, not disappointed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept is fun, the story is not bad. The gameplay isn't perfect and often punishes the player for following the design. The real downside, for me, is the level design. The world itself is neat and engaging, but you will often find yourself stuck on something you cannot see, or being knock into a death pit and feeling cheated because you had no other approach for the situation. I did enjoy the game overall, but the experience was more frustrating than fun.
