The game doesn't really respect your time. 1st map: 2 hours 2nd map: 6 hours 3rd map: 6 hours 4th map: 9 hours There's really no new gameplay in any of those that you couldn't condense into 1-2 hour maps. Largely just killing a near-endless amount of the same enemies, again and again. It shouldn't be this way. This game is a bit of a mix. On one hand, it's an indie title and I feel like expectations are managed from the small team size. The complaints you're about to read should be kept to consideration of the team size. On the other, we got some serious design flaws on what otherwise would be one of the best takes on a Tactcis style game I've played in a long time. The fights in general feel pretty ok. There's an expectation of failure, I'm ok with that. What I'm not ok with are the…

The core game is pretty fun, but every single stage gimmick (especially starting on the fourth map) are just god-awful unfun stuff. The DLCs are also kind of offensive in terms of content, specifically the elves and dwarves ones, especially because most weapons are just terrible and overdesigned in comparison, and the elves and dwarves themselves are just so very much like the humans (and they have one samey passive each, ie, elves gain bonuses outside your base, and dwarves can be thrown)…

Kind of a fun game, but at least on the first play through the "gotcha!" boss mechanics often force you to have to totally replay each level because you have no way of knowing your build simply cannot win at the final stages of each level... and at that point you won't be able to pivot to new weapons or abilities... well, it makes the game feel real tedious and frustrating. I'm looking at you, mirror shield. These levels can take hours to carefully play just to hit a dead end you had no way…

I bought this game years ago when I first saw trailers for it and though the premise might be interesting, finally got around to playing it recently (Oct 2025). Currently I wouldn't recommend the game for two reasons. The first is that it relies way too much on RNG, and the second is that runs take far too long. First on the Over reliance on RNG: the upgrades you get are random, the perks your characters can get are random, the gear your town makes is random, the enemy types and their attack…

I've thus far broken 3 seals. Working on the 4th. Each seal is like a mini-campaign. You have to survive a string of consecutive battles, building up your characters and defenses, until it culminates in a final boss battle. And then it's on to the next seal, with a new map and roster that you build up again from scratch. With meta-progression via unlocks. The level of tension is PERFECT. I had to attempt the first boss battle twice, and beat it handily on the 2nd attempt.…

It is a fun game, leveling and equipping your mercenaries is really enjoyable - but I can't keep myself motivated to continue playing as it is so slow paced. Takes forever to get to like day 10 or so, because you need a gazillion of turns to kill the 50 qudrillion enemies individually - and if you fail then you have to start over from day 1 and do the same exact drag again to get back to where you were in the run before. I can see how people with a lot of time will really enjoy this, would…

Even though I am leaving a negative review, this game does have some great things and some bad things that some might be able to overlook. I love the music, atmosphere, and turn based gameplay. Where I ran into problems was the sluggish 'rogue' elements. Random heroes, random skills, too much random for my taste. These things normally wouldn't bother me in a rogue like, but due to the slooow pacing of the game they just felt too hindering to my enjoyment. Got it cheap, got some fun out of it.…

A mechanically deep and viscerally satisfying game, with a large amount of content and high replayability for that content. You are tasked with using your limited heroes and resources to cut through the encroaching undead faster than they can overwhelm your haven, with a break each morning to level up, harvest resources, and prepare for the next night. The number of ways to do this effectively, even on higher difficulties, is surprising - each of the different weapon classes, perk trees, and…

The Perfect Hybrid If you love the character depth of CRPGs (xcom and rougue trader) and the "horde-defense" tension of They Are Billions or Age of Darkness, The Last Spell is the perfect blend. It takes the survival anxiety of a base-builder and fuses it with high-stakes tactical combat. The Marathon Roguelike Unlike many roguelikes that demand a 30–60 minute sprint, this is a longer-style experience. It feels like a true campaign. Because you can save and quit at any time, you never feel…

The Last Spell is an assault on the senses. Every character has so many stats. Every item has so many modifiers. Every time your characters level (which happens all the time) you have to choose between so many perks, and the perks have so many interactions. There are so many possible builds. So many unlocks. It's a shame because there's 80% of a really great game here, but there's also 160% of a less good game: less well balanced, less streamlined, less necessary. There's so much purple and so…

Starts off great, but... It took me 48 hours to realise that the only way to "win" in this drudgery is to laboriously redo the same scenarios over and over until your "level" is high enough to avoid being overwhelmed. That's not "fun", as I understand it. That's just mindless, repetitive plodding.

I thought this would be up my alley: a tactics based tower defense? Count me in! Hoo boy, is it a slog. First off, I played on Steam Deck and the controls were wonky and hard to pick up. The true crime is here though is just how LONG runs take. With very little variation. Yes the zombies have different classes but...they still don't feel very varied. This game feels like what other turn/tile based combat campaigns should strive to be. Players of XCOM or similar titles will look at the choices made here and go 'oh, it IS possible to make these mechanics feel good'. In particular I want give some specific praise. This game hits my spot; customizing a squad under constraints and then taking them out to see how they perform in a tactics-based challenge. They captured the flavor of defending against never-ending hordes of wimps punctuated by some truly dangerous enemies in a fantasy setting beautifully. It's biggest weakness is that it plays quite slowly; a game can take 10 hours and there are alot of different weapons and abilities to experiment with but you can only use a few in one game. I'm 80…

TLS is essentially about making lots of tiny optimising decisions with whatever RNG throws at you. The core gameplay loops between mowing down hordes at night and (re)building your structures and defenses during the day. Combined with regular unlocks, this system works quite well until you progress through most of the upgrade systems and run out of new ways to play. This is also a game that's designed to become much easier after a number of complete runs: As of the 1.3 update, the first run…

A great game that rewards careful planning. If you're too slow with planning and preparations, some runs have taken me about 10 hours over multiple IRL nights. Once you're used to the game, a lot of prep and planning can be cut short. Some of the more recent long areas I've done have been only 4 hours, which is still probably long for a lot of people. Definitely love the game, would recommend to anyone who enjoys games with a small tactical element.

Normally I would love this kind of game, the tactics combat, the fun synergistic builds, etc However The Last Spell has a tremendous pacing problem Your party resets at the end of every stage The stages last way too long (each one is essentially a rogue run) The game heavily focuses the war of attrition kinda of gameplay (conserve resources for the last round) It doesn't have that Slay the Spire feeling of making broken builds, so it is hard to tell how well you are doing until the last round.…

I would be happy to give this game a positive review, but unfortunately it corrupted a save I put over 100 hours on. This is what happens when you build your game around cloud saving exclusively. It's a good game, but be wary that it might waste your time and steal all of your progress seemingly at total random with no real way to recover anything.

A different take on the tactical rpg formula by fighting 10s to 100 enemies with your up to 6 heroes. It has a nice power curve. Where in night one, your guys struggle to kill 3 'zombies' a night, by night 10+ they can kill up to 20. One downside is that if you lose, you lose 5+ hours of progres in the level. Still, nice game especially for the asking price.

Music is phenomenal and gameplay loop is ok. That's where my praise for this game ends. Lets start with the first thing you interact with, Heroes. Chances are your starting Heroes will have hot garbage for Perks or are only good for specific obscure builds the average player could only stumble across by chance, and as this game can be challenging, players are incentivised to re-roll the start till they get Heroes that will actually let them beat the game. This game is only for people who like punishment. It has forced perma death with no ability to reload a saved game after the fact. On top of that, the game can be brutally hard or you can really get screwed by the rng. I uninstalled after I got to the 4th town. It's not worth it for me to invest that much time for that kind of frustration. Ceases to be a game for fun.

Thanks for hosting, love The Last Spell! I am addicted to isometric pixel art. Speaking of which, my game Save the Forest is a isometric pixelart game where you fight tactical battles and meet curious characters... store.steampowered.com/app/3832200/...

I was originally gonna wait until I had beaten the entire game to leave a review, but it's so good I just couldn't help myself. So essentially, it's a cross between Fire Emblem, Darkest Dungeon and tower defense games if you want the brief overview. You control a group of heroes fighting hordes of undead and defending a town for several nights. Everything about it is top-notch - the progression, the music, the visuals, the overall gameplay... It's pretty difficult and can feel repetitive at…

It's hard to describe exactly what the game is, something akin to a roguelike turn-based RPG base defense, but it's incredibly well made and extremely addicting. The DLC do a god job of adding new character types, weapons, and other items, and have their own maps which are tough and interesting in their own ways. Definitely a game I keep coming back to.

I've been playing this game on and off since Early Access but never got around to leaving a review. First of all, the music in this game is really great. It's conceptually similar to Hades in that you're killing hordes of demons (zombies?) to an awesome metal soundtrack. The game is pretty cool too. Spend your days building your base, deciding whether to spend your gold on buildings, items, workers or hiring new heroes for your squad (tip: workers and new heroes are essential), then place…

Pros: Great turn based gameplay progression through multiple runs finding synergies between weapons pleases the neurons Cons: Runs can take upwards of 4 hours because the sheer number of decisions and enemies You spend a lot of time learning a map, understanding how to optimally place buildings, only to have to relearn it once you make it to the final night and learn that the boss's spawn location will screw you over.

I think I got this game on sale for about 2$ About 114 hours later I finally beat it. Worth every penny and then some. The building up of your town in each area to fuel your heros and bulk up your walls etc is quite fun and adds a fun element to the turn based combat which is pretty run of the mill but done very well. Killing hordes of baddies is satisfying and toppling the crazy powered bosses makes you feel like a real bad ass. The unlockables in this game are plenty and by playing to your…

This is a mixed one I think. It's a good game, and there is a lot to love, but the difficulty curve is so wonky. Playing a run for like 3+ hours, with really only the final 20-30 minutes being an actual challenge (and then having to go back through like 2 hours of autopilot choices to get back to that point again) is a real pain. IDK - I think it is rough not having the ability to save/reload, as other tactical games like this have. Maybe that is cheating, but it feels sorely needed, so that…

The game definitely has its good points, but I'll be discussing the negatives. For one, I was hoping this would be a strategy game, but after a certain amount of maps (I think it was two), you're railroaded into whatever random weapon they decide to give you for each character. Many of the weapons just aren't that good, and in order to use what you actually want, you have to rely on RNG in hopes that it will appear of the dozens of weapons, and wasting time and resources to purchase that…

This is a really cool srpg roguelite with a great soundtrack. My only real complaint is that the controller/steamdeck ui is incomprehensibly bad. Not unplayable but so many unused buttons and no smooth scrolling through many lists...

Runs are long, but you absolutely don't feel it. Gameplay, music, graphics... everything is top-notch. One problem I have is that, sometimes in the ost there seem to be sounds similar to what my cat makes, and it made me think something happened to my cat a couple of times, so I had to check on her.

An interesting rogue-lite that is impressive in the sheer amount of things that are randomized, and a wide assortment of combat options. Some mechanics are less than thought out, like having to keep track of max health/mana and regen, even though you are already heavily restricted from burning mana in a single battle, and could almost never risk tanking enemies on purpose anyway. Also recovery between nights turns out to be fairly trivial, so what's the point of the micromanagement? But…
