The Mummy Demastered is a 2017 Metroidvania video game developed by WayForward Technologies and based on the 2017 film The Mummy. Good pixel art and soundtrack, but it's a shame it all goes to waste purely due to the lame death mechanic which single-handedly taints this game: dying spawns a zombie clone of yourself who has all your weapons and health/ammo expansions, and the only way of reclaiming your stuff is by killing your zombie. This isn't hard in a vacuum, but it's the runback that makes this a terrible experience. You have no health …

I finished the game in 4.3 hours and have 90 percent of items collected and 94 percent of the map explored. This is a pretty short game and a pretty standard metroidvania. I can't really recommend this game as there are much better games for the price, and although this game starts out "kinda" strong, there really is no story and the enemy variety is pretty horrible. The best thing about this game is the music. What …

The Mummy Demastered, developed and published by WayForward, is a side-scrolling action-platformer that does something few licensed games manage to do—it outshines the movie it’s based on. Inspired by the 2017 reboot of The Mummy, the game sets itself apart by taking only the bare essentials from the film and reimagining them in a dark, pixelated Metroidvania world that pays homage to the 16-bit era. What results is …

6/10. Slight thumbs up. Be warned about what you are getting into. YOU CAN "Soft lock" your game. I put it in quotes because when you die, you start as a new agent and your corpse becomes a zombie. You have to get back to the zombie and kill it to get your equipment back (including your HEALTH UPGRADES). This is important because you cannot avoid being hit. If your save is too far back, getting there alive, …

The first thing you'll notice is the striking music and visuals. The Mummy Demastered ($7.99) - hey, we all loved the 2017 The Mummy movie, right? ...okay, jokes aside, WayForward made a tie-in video game for it and it actually kicks ass. Contra run and gunning mixed in with Metroidvania world exploration. good times. store.steampowered.com/app/630310/T...

I'm quite fortunate to have @tbskyen.com as a contributor on my upcoming book, who tackles the idea of licensed Metroidvanias and how even a bad movie can make for a good game courtesy of The Mummy Demastered. How does the genre shift to accommodate a random soldier rather than a hero?

Just wanna say y'all are nailing it. A whole bunch of fascinating games I've never heard of here, plus some great picks for underrated gems. So, another from me: Despite being part of a doomed movie franchise marketing push, The Mummy Demastered is secretly a sequel to Wayforward's Aliens DS game.

There are two sections where you can get locked out of progressing in the game. The first spot is after you kill the clock tower boss. If you die after that part there's is a huge chance you won't be able to progress because you spawn BEFORE the closed door. If it wasn't for that major bug this game would have worth it.

Imagine a GBA/DS Castlevania game, but instead of playing as a vampire hunter armed with a wip and holy water, you play as a soldier with a shotgun and a flamethrower. That should be enough info for you to decide to give this game a chance or not.

I was on the fence about whether to recommend or not recommend this game because it has good elements, but also terrible sluggish movement, but then two incidents happened halfway through the game that made me lean heavily towards not recommend. "The Mummy Demastered" is a run of the mill "Metroidvania" with a great presentation and some frustrating game design. The game spams enemies which will send you flying with their insane knock back and there are a lot of vertical rooms, so have fun climbing back up idiot. Call me scrubby but having a souls-like death system in this game ruined it for me. Especially considering the later parts of the map have an abnormal amount of enemies on the screen trying to mess with you so that you do NOT get your upgrades and weapons. This ruined the game for me so much that I uninstalled it and did not look back. Its ok if you never experience this game as WayForward is capable of much more with the Shantae series.

A Metroidvania with retro-ish platform-shooting action that is a lot more like Contra or Contra III than Metroid. As someone who grew up playing a lot of platform shooters on 8 & 16-bit consoles (and still does to this day), I believe this is how the game tries to stand out among Metroidvanias. In true spirit of retro platform shooters: Eight cardinal directions, diagonal aim-lock, and short-hops are all you get. The ammo system encourages players to hone their aim and avoid overkilling…

Do to overall frustrating level design, punishing death situations, bosses that are just damage sponges (not just a sponge, but a whole pack of them), and the excessive knockback this game, is just not even fun to play. Absolutely worst metroidvania design choice: Die and lose all upgrades till you visit your body. Everytime you die to reach your body, another zombie spawns. So now you're in a tough level, without any upgrades and lots of your previous dead bodies trying to kill you along with random enemies that cause huge knockback when hit.

The game is made "difficult" because of bullet chaos sections and then there's the whole trek back to fight your defeated avatar if you die. And to go back it steals all your weapons. The aiming is only 9 positions instead of 360 degrees. If you get hit, you get the "knockback" treatment and you can fall great heights like you're playing jump king or something. Pretty fun game with some really good music. Wouldn't pay full price for it though. Only criticism I have are mixed feelings on the death mechanic, it's a cool concept that your agent can die and is now a thrall to the mummy, it sucks near the end of the game when you lose all of your health boosts and your trinkets. It makes trying to recover your items a pain when you have 99 health and hallways full of enemies and some of them are hitting for around 30 points of damage. I wish the dark…

I'm a huge fan of Metroid and Castlevania, this game blends elements of the two very well. It's a shame that the movie was widely panned because it really buried this game in obscurity, not to mention that there is no chance of us getting another entry from this series. The bottom line is, if you like Metroid and Castlevania then you need to try this game.

What a weird game. Ostensibly based off the Tom Cruise Mummy flick, it takes certain cues from the movie but otherwise is just a very bare bones metroid experience. Quality pixel animation and a banger soundtrack from WayForward, as well as tight controls are in abundance for a 4-6 hour game. This game unfortunately ends up being a valid example of "How Not to Make a Metroidvania", as it severely lacks some of the most basic mechanics a decent Metroidvania game should have. The map is not detailed enough, you may not know where to enter and exit, so taking notes while playing is recommended. Overall difficulty is pretty easy and simple as it is, but beware of dying. I get that it's a low budget title but this just has way too many glaring issues to ignore. This starts on a technical level. There's barely any options, the game only supports resolutions up to 1080p and there's no framerate option at all, the game just defaults to your monitor refresh rate. This wouldn't be a problem, except if you go above 60fps, the enemies speed up by the same factor. Someone else commented on this game and it crossed my view. My two cents? The Mummy Demastered is a damn good game. @gamerthumbtv.bsky.social streamed this back in the day and I had to get it immediately and did not regret it.

The death mechanic for this game is really lame. It's neat the first time I guess in concept as your have to fight the fallen body of the former soldier who you were playing prior to dying, but you come back as a much weakened version of your former self and have to make it back to your body and even then it doesn't completely refill your ammo so you'll have to go back and farm to get back to max for the boss encounter you just died on. Then you also get to rewatch all those wonderful…

The game was genuinely fun when I first opened it, it has good graphics, the gameplay is a bit simple but works well, the map design was alright. HOWEVER, there is a mechanic where once you die, your corpse is reanimated and you lose your extra health and guns. Having to regain it from killing the corpse can be a fun challenge but that would be if it was less tedious. The sheer amount of flying enemy spam and the actual act of beating your corpse with your dinky beginner rifle can get grating…

Finished Never 7: The End of Infinity (part of the [Ever 17/Never 7 Double Pack](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/ever-17-never-7-double-pack-switch/))! Decent for its age. It's romance/mystery focused but adds some interesting sci-fi ideas in the final stretch. Its biggest problem is that all "main" routes follow the same basic formula, so they get very repetitive after a while. Two characters (Yuka and Izumi) also get "secondary" routes that changes things a bit, but neither adds…
