Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 242 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,623 of 4,270 positive).
Players praise the game's charming art style and creative 2D/3D world-switching concept. [1][2][3] Many reviewers find the gameplay simple, easy, and sometimes monotonous. [1][4][5] Some players report bugs that can break progress, especially on Steam Deck. [6][7][8]

I wanted to write a good review for this game, because even though it didn't fit my usual vibe for games - it was still cute, the artwork and style were neat and the mini-games were pretty funny. I really can't though because even after it's been out like a year and a half it still suffers from bugs that can softlock your game. This requires you to restart from earlier saves it makes, but just wastes so much time. …

I may have saddled the Squire with too-heavy expectations because I found the idea behind the game irresistible. And make no mistake, they made it work: the main action as a 2D game within the pages of a book, which in turn is in a 3D environment that is not only there for decoration, as the ability to get in and out of the book gives life to entire 3D sections and several ingenious puzzles, albeit easy ones. It's …

I just finished The Plucky Squire, and honestly… I absolutely loved it. It’s probably one of the best games I’ve played in recent years. I spent 13 hours on it and got almost 100%, just missing a few collectibles, but I didn’t feel the need to replay the chapters right away. From start to finish, The Plucky Squire is a creative masterpiece. The way it constantly shifts between 2D and 3D, between pages and chapters, …

Is The Plucky Squire an essential game? No, not really. But it is a fun, charming, light-hearted storybook romp in the vein of A Link to the Past. If you’ve heard stories about how it’s verbose, too easy, awfully paced, and holds your hand too much, worry not. The developers revisited the game after release to add difficulty settings and a “Streamlined” mode that reduces the amount of dialogue and gameplay guidance. …

I really enjoyed The Plucky Squire. It’s a charming, wholesome adventure with a lovely story and some genuinely clever gameplay ideas. Switching between 2D and 3D never got old, and the art style is absolutely beautiful. I also ran into zero bugs during my playthrough, which made the whole experience even smoother. Just a feel-good game from start to finish.

The Nintendo Switch version received "mixed or average" reviews, with additional criticism addressed towards performance issues on the system. After the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, it was noted that the game ran natively better on this system through backward compatibility.

The presentation is, obviously, quite good. The storybook style and even the world outside the pages are brought to life just about as well as you could ask for, but that's about where my praise ends. It's not that there's any element of this game that…

The game offered tireless hints and handholding where they could have instead created challenging puzzles with some more freedom.

positive · AI labelView post →Sights & Sounds This is what interested you in the first place There are a lot of things you could criticize about The Plucky Squire, but you won't find that criticism in this section of the review. It's an inarguably beautiful game The combo of realistic 3D environments paired with the cartoonish storybook artstyle was such a great choice that I'm a little mad that it took so long pull off this mixed media look so effectively. It's not a totally new idea, but I can't recall it ever looking…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Plucky Squire belongs to the weaker end of the Devolver's list of games. If you have a functioning set of eyes, you can see how it's gotten enough care. You don't need me to tell you this. You'll be swapping between three types of main stages throughout your journey, 2D topdown, 2D sidescrolling and 3D. Movements are responsive, and the combat is mediocre but passable. You can cheese pretty much everything with the jump attack, remember the lightsaber slams from the OG Lego Star Wars games?…
