What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 38 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (57 of 81 positive).
Players praise the game's faithful adaptation of Maurice Leblanc's books. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the puzzles and gameplay frustrating or unintuitive. [4][5][6] The narrative and voice acting are widely appreciated. [7][8][9]

One of these "deduction" games that rely on the mind map trope to get from clues to conclusions, this might be the worst implementation you'll ever find. - Poorly thought-out nodes, with high level of redundancy, overlap, and obvious absence. - Idem for relationships. - On the other hand, textually unrelated nodes are expected to be connected. - Direct contradictions can be seen on a same map, yet cannot be …

I loooove that this game is based almost entirely on the actual books. There are not many Lupin games out there and the few there are, aren't based on Leblanc's books, and they are a treasure! I had a different mental image of almost every character in the game, but I like the designs, considering the fact that the game isn't too complex and it's smooth to play. I think the cartoon-style designs is quite fitting for …

Impressively faithful to canon. Shame about the gameplay. I'm not big on point-and-click games, nor am I especially interested in Maurice Leblanc’s literary works, which makes this review tricky. Let me start with the good: All of the due diligence, from a literary perspective, was done. The developers got permission from Leblanc's family estate to tell this story, and have clearly researched all of his books. If …

A great story-driven experience, especially for fans of Arsène Lupin. The narrative is the real star here—clever, stylish, and full of charm. If you enjoy gentleman thieves and classic mystery vibes, you'll feel right at home. On the technical side, things are quite rough around the edges.... The interface is clunky for todays standards, no sprint function, and you can't remap keys (rotating is... bad). Graphics are …

An adaption of The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar, which follows the structure very closely, frequently to confusing results More point and click puzzle sections than the Poirot game made by the same company, which is a welcome change

60 of 71 · most liked firstGot stuck on Chapter 2 as Inspector Ganimand. Could not progress the story forward as there were no news items I could look at or new areas or visit. The objectives list had one objective which was to find Lupin so I wandered aimlessly for 20 minutes. I think I might have completed some it out of sequence and this possibly lead to the stall in progression. Additionally, the game is quite difficult to play with a mouse as the aim is just slightly off meaning that you end up clicking on other…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is a pretty mediocre detective style which you can expect from the developer. However I stopped playing this game and wish I could still refund, because I just lost all my progress. I accidentally clicked on "new game", which starts a new game without confirmation, overwriting the existing (only) save. There are no manul saves. This is super stupid and annoying. Cannot recomment this crap.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I rather like it. I was doubtful just because of the previous game by this developer, but there are no bugs (not that I noticed anyway), and it's really fun. Love the way the story is being told, it creates a very exciting dynamic. Each time I finish my gaming session, I can't wait for the next one. There are certain things that I wish were done differently, like I wish I could collect things at once and not wander back and forth. But once I put that behind me, it's been really fun. I'm having…

It's by far the best and I enjoyed the others. In 'Poirot first cases', 99% of gameplay was the deduction boards, which got a bit tedious. In 'London cases', gameplay was upped a bit with less deduction boards, but still quite a lot. While the story was good, it wasn't great. Here the story was great (I had never read any of these books). They…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Microids has a long history of forcing players to look very closely at every single frame of their games. Not in the usual way either. I mean they really want you to STUDY what they created. There's no such thing as running or even walking fast in their games. Impossible! You might miss some of their beautiful artwork! When they did add a running feature in one of the Agatha Christie games, the character just refused to do it. ("Poirot does not run," our hero retorted several times in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring, linear, and poorly written. The "puzzles" aren't interesting, just making random (unintuitive) connections on a board. It doesn't matter if you, the player, have figured out the mystery. There's no way to effectively use that information to progress. Very unsatisfying game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game for one night: simple, beautiful, charmingBut I'm not sure it's worth the money
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After completing the game and reflecting on my experience, I found the mini-games to be somewhat challenging, particularly due to mouse sensitivity issues and clickable areas. However, I believe this game could still be enjoyable for fans of the developers' earlier titles. While the gameplay and story didn't fully align with my expectations, there are aspects that many players might appreciate (e.g., solving riddles).

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Arsene Lupin – Once a Thief is a stylish, story-driven adventure that invites players into a playful reimagining of Maurice Leblanc’s legendary gentleman thief. Blazing Griffin approaches the material with a narrative twist: the game is framed as an ongoing conversation between Lupin and his own creator, who challenges the thief to retell several of his most audacious crimes. This layered structure becomes the heart of the experience, allowing the player to witness each scenario from multiple…

neutral · AI labelView post →Interesting game which keeps you on the rails for the majority of the game. There are some good puzzles that do take some thought before that 'aha!' moment. A lot comes down to conversational puzzles where you do need to select the correct response. Sometimes this is very obvious and some more vague but helps the story progress nicely. The absolute standout is the voice acting of the characters which is top notch. The visuals are bright, colourful and very pleasing. Camera controls consist of…

neutral · AI labelView post →Pros: - I liked the characters. - I liked the style choices. - I liked the sense of adventure. Cons: - Many of the puzzles are awful. Some of them are incredibly simplistic, others require ridiculous leaps of logic, and it felt like there was little in between. - Some of the mind maps are incredibly unintuitive. Sometimes you have to draw genuine connections, other times you have to draw connections you *know* to be wrong. And there's often multiple nodes referencing the same…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although I expected to play only as Lupin himself, the playful way in which "Arsene Lupin: Once a Thief"'s narrative chronology is broken up between Lupin carrying out his heists and Ganimard trying to figure out how he does them is very fun. Some of the puzzles are fairly straightforward and overly forgiving, with unlimited tries and no repercussions when you do something wrong, but the more traditional investigative puzzling is rewarding to solve, and whenever I succeeded in linking evidence…

neutral · AI labelView post →A wonderful little detective game where you wind up playing all sides of the story to a rather inevitable conclusion, with a cute little framing device. Definitely a fun adaptation of the character. The gameplay is nothing new, but its well-done, even if occasionally steps can be a bit opaque.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun and interesting point-and-click adventure game, but pretty short, around 7 hours play time. The puzzles are not too difficult, but the objects sometimes are quite difficult to find. Recommend to buy only when there is a discount. (I bought it with 75% off discount)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Probably the best isometric detective game from the studio: Lupin is a much livelier hero than the tedious Poirot. Cohesive, atmospheric, true to the spirit of the original, with a great soundtrack and those signature mind maps that, as always, seem to make sense only to the developers

Though to be fair, I have not read any of the Arsene Lupin books. Otherwise I might have adjusted my expectations accordingly. The gameplay is suitable for the genre. There were a few places were I question the logic in the mind maps, but thankfully nodes related to each other are highlighted after a few failed attempts. Overall it's not terribly difficult to solve…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would recommend this game only on the basis on the art and story telling of the game. I just recently finished the first and 2nd book of the Arsene Lupin books and I greatly enjoyed them so far. This game is based on the first book only from what I remember. The point and click part of the game was okay but it did have its downsides, there were some difficulties and some glaring problem issues that had me stumped for bit that forced me to look up a walkthrew of the game. The puzzles were…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →not that great, but also not that awful the thing i REALLY liked was the story being accurate to "arsène lupin, gentleman thief" (but with some changes, of course), i think they did a great job in adapting it into a game! but other than the story i feel like the game is a bit lacking... ≈8 hours is too short for a game that costs 30 dollars. (and even IF it was longer it would be way too repetitive because the game ALREADY IS repetitive!) both gameplay and controls could be better,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are lovely, as is the story. The gameplay is mostly mind-map-solving and walking around, looking at things. Maybe a bit dull after the third time. However, very fun to play. Worth in a huge sale. 30€ for roughly ~8h of repetitive gameplay is a bit too much.
