What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 172 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (5,967 of 6,261 positive).
Players widely praise the game's timeless writing, humor, and charm. [1][2][3] Many appreciate the ability to switch between remastered and original graphics. [1][2][4] Some reviewers find puzzles unintuitive and the game requires backtracking. [5][6][7]

It's fun, it's charming, it's a chore. The amount of back tracking you need to do if you don't already know answers to puzzles is insane. I honestly have no idea how people played this before guides on the internet were mainstream.

I was there when floppy disks ruled and insults were a combat skill. Monkey Island still slaps harder than LeChuck’s ghostly beard—razor-sharp writing, timeless puzzles, and Guybrush being gloriously clueless. Special Edition lets me switch nostalgia on and off like a CRT. A pirate classic, forever. 🏴☠️🍌 Follow my curator page for more legendary insults, ghost pirates, and classics that never needed patch notes. …

The absolute blueprint for point-and-click adventures, and this remaster nails the face-lift without losing the original soul. Solving the absurd puzzles and mastering insult sword fighting feels just as brilliant today as it did decades ago. The ability to swap between the gorgeous modern graphics and the classic pixel art on the fly is the ultimate chef's kiss. It's a short, hilarious, and mandatory piece of …

It’s a classic, and for good reason. A charming, well-written adventure filled to the brim with entertaining characters. Two notes: 1: This edition includes both the remastered graphics (a more cartoony style, like what’s advertised on the store page) and the original pixel art graphics, which you can switch between at the press of a button. I vastly prefer the latter, it’s much more stylised and charming to me, but …

The Secret of Monkey Island is the best game I’ve played in a while. It has aged remarkably well, thanks to its wonderful charming world, and incredibly funny writing. The voice acting is great and pairs perfectly with the humor, while the music creates an unforgettable atmosphere. I love the music and humor throughout—it’s clever, memorable, and consistently entertaining. It’s an absolute classic that remains just …

Critics, per Wikipedia
The Secret of Monkey Island received positive reviews from critics. According to Gilbert, it "sold well" but was "never a big hit". Grossman later summarized that the game's sales were "north of 100,000, far south of 1 million. Back in those days, a few hundred thousand was a giant smash hit". According to Next Generation, The Secret of Monkey Island was a "relatively minor hit" in the United States, but the game and its sequel became "blockbusters on the PC and the Amiga throughout Europe". Hartley, Patricia, and Kirk Lesser of Dragon praised the designers' attention to detail, and cited the game's humor as a high point. Although they believed that the game was too expensive, they…

neutral · AI labelView post →Been playing #TheSecretOfMonkeyIsland with my oldest kid and we're loving it. I realize I haven't actually re-played the series since the special edition came out in 2009 (and of course, each new game upon release). These games defined my childhood (together with #ALinktothePast and #Quake). So here's for a new generation embracing the magic of #MonkeyIsland! Thanks @grumpygamer! Not all heroes wear capes 😁
positive · AI labelView post →Post the first game you actually completed! I'm racking my brains, and you know what, it would likely have been The Secret of Monkey Island? It wasn't until picking up an Amiga that I started completing games from start to finish.

And here, with Lucasfilms' The Secret of Monkey Island, we see how creative some programmers and artists could get with them.

positive · AI labelView post →I think instead of "Compiling shaders..." game developers should aggressively steal from the parser narration during the fight in the governor's mansion in The Secret of Monkey Island.

They use tablets now, but I want to introduce them to the joys of keyboards and mice (and The Secret of Monkey Island). I hope they'll like it, so that in the future they'll stick to PC's and laptops, which offer far more robust control by the end user.

Can't wait for to introduce them to The Secret of Monkey Island and Sam and Max Hit the Road. From what I hear, most parents in my neighbourhood are doing something similar, so there's little peer pressure to get the latest hardware to play the latest games.

It also launched a [series of sequels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Island). And it *should* be everything I'm looking for in this genre. It has pirates and it has ghost pirates, and that's all I should need. And yet, when I think about this genre, I'm drawn to the horror elements. I like the unique elements that sea monsters can bring to a story (as opposed…

Not really related to this picture... but scenes like this always bring back some of my childhood memories, playing The Secret of Monkey Island, and you'd get this map of Melee Island. My best friend and I loved the games and were excited to see it, so we bought tickets. I cannot express how bad it was. I've sat through some awful shit, but we just couldn't take it. We walked out of a high school play because it was *that* bad.

positive · AI labelView post →I've always wanted to complete this game 100%. I owned it as a kid on an old PC my uncle gave me. Unfortunately, it was in English, and I was only about four or five years old. Back then, it ran on the legendary Windows 95, so it brings back a lot of great memories. Seeing the old scenery again and finally being able to play it properly is just stunning, a truly wonderful experience.

If you played this in the 90s/early 2000s pick this up on sale for a couple of quid/dollars. You're getting two games. The one we remember and its upgraded version. I was often flitting between both modes for that nostalgic hit. But be under no illusion this is a point and click game from the 90s wearing a pretty coat. This is a classic for a reason; it's full of terrifically silly fun, and uses a bevy of mechanics to keep your brain stretching for creative solutions. The game is fair, ad as far as I can tell, can't be made unwinnable. There's not really any moon logic here.
