What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 24 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (61 of 87 positive).
Some players find the game a decent platformer with a charming art style and fun coffee mechanic. [1][2][3] Others criticize it as a mediocre metroidvania with unsatisfying backtracking and repetitive bosses. [4][5][6] Several backers support the creator but feel the game lacks polish and depth. Good little game, I played thru the entire game over the last few days. I received the game in advance because I backed it on Kickstarter. The devs have put together a nice little game with some good mechanics. The character moves well, although at times I found them a little slippery in their movement (and not just in the ice level). The themes explored in the game are well done. Combat is very simple with a decent …

This is an aptly named game because by all accounts this game is "fine". Its nothing special but not bad. Its a serviceable metroidvania that does exactly what you want it to. You have the standard levels and basic combat with a plethora of enemies and powerups to keep the game engaging. The themes of the game could have used a little bit more depth considering the heavy topics they were going over. Yes this is a …

I played for about 4 hours, but around 1 hour of that was offline because my internet went out, so Steam didn’t count it. I’ve been following this game for a long time not because I’m a fan of the meme, but for the hero concept and the fact that it was supposed to be a metroidvania. Unfortunately, it ended up being a disappointment. And that disappointment comes down to one single tag: “Metroidvania.” This is not a …

I backed this game on Kickstarter with the full expectation that it was not going to be good. I knew it was going to be a cheap cash-in, but I've also been a fan of KC Green since the Horribleville days and wanted to see him at least get something out of the one thing he ever made that went viral. In case you're unaware, the backstory goes like this: Question Hound was a character from Gunshow, a comic KC made in …

As Question Hound says: "This is Fine". And the game that QH is in is also... fine? I guess... I can’t figure out why this game was made or who it is for. People who enjoy Metroidvannia will be disappointed, this is a mediocre platform pretending to be a metroidvannia. Backtracking is pointless unless you want to collect collectables, which do function as minor upgrades, (the most exciting of which is one that makes …
Summarised from 31 of the 44 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
46% of the 24 Steam reviewers we collected recommend This Is Fine: Maximum Cope. The complaint that keeps coming up: not a true metroidvania; lacks satisfying backtracking. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is fine (if you enjoy backtracking and fetch quests) Not every game has to reinvent the wheel, but it should at least be somewhat rememberable (which is clearly not a case here). I didn't have a bad time with it, but between the short playtime, recurrent patterns, and the current price, it's hard for me to recommend. As someone who barely plays platformers or metroidvanias, I still made it through without much trouble, so it's definitely approachable though. The presentation is fun, and…

neutral · AI labelView post →Really enjoying this! 6.3 hrs in and still coming back for more. It's tough, but well balanced overall. It's also super rewarding when you unlock new abilities and beat the bosses. The story is great and it's really fun to play, I like it a lot and I'm really glad I backed the Kickstarter.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I backed this on kickstarter primarily to support KC Green, and only secondarily with the vague hope that this might turn out to be a decent platformer. Unfortunately this is actually pretty mediocre in terms of gameplay, which would be fine if it at least evoked KC Green's unique art style, but it doesn't really do that either. Look up the original Gunshow comic and compare how this game looks to that to see what I mean. It's not the worst game ever, but I can't say that I really recommend it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not fine! It's far from it actually. I hope that me being a kickstarter backer shows that I had a lot of goodwill towards this project. Usually I try to avoid posting reviews for games I have not finished but in the case of This is fine: Maximum cope I just can't do it. I really wish I could put this more nicely, but it might be one of the worst games I have ever played. The main reason here is that everything is just super basic. Starting out with the basic moveset which is moving,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’ve been following this project since its Kickstarter days, so it’s really cool to finally see it released. It’s always nice when a passion project makes it all the way to launch. The game has a unique and quirky concept, especially with the coffee mechanic, collecting beans and using coffee to heal adds a fun twist to the usual platforming formula. The art style is charming and clearly inspired by the original meme, which gives it a lot of personality. Gameplay-wise, it sticks to classic…

neutral · AI labelView post →Been waiting for this for a while now. Not disappointed! Unique & a lot of fun. Story is very good, defeating bosses & unlocking abilities feels very rewarding. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I saw this game was a Kickstarter project and I am glad someone was allowed to follow their passion and make this game. But as a fan of metroidvania games I feel like this game may have missed it's mark. I understand that not every game is made for everyone but there are some really odd pacing issues with this one. I completed up to the second boss and I will probably refund this after I post this. Story wise, it's pretty barebones. You have a angel and a demon dog who will narrate very…

People who enjoy Metroidvannia will be disappointed, this is a mediocre platform pretending to be a metroidvannia. Backtracking is pointless unless you want to collect collectables, which do function as minor upgrades, (the most exciting of which is one that makes your character waddle 20% faster) or more coffee bean currency. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT: It seems like my bugs listed below have been fixed since writing this review. Haven’t played the game since then but that would still only bring the score up to 5/10 if truly fixed. TL;DR 4/10 game that (somehow) suffers from very bad performance issues and mostly bland gameplay. Wait until game goes on sale at $5 for it to be worth your money. I backed the game on Kickstarter as I used to read Gunshow comics back in the day and wanted to support KC Green. Had 0 expectations but just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is based off my favorite meme. It’s a pretty solid platformer, but a below-average Metroidvania. I can’t recommend this game due to bugged achievements. If you don’t care about achievements, it’s a fine weekend game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this game has a really funny premise, and I want to like it, but it hasn't got the polish needed to be a top-tier metroidvania. The fact that your healing items don't replenish at save points and have to be separately purchased, the slippery movement that continues too long after you let go of the direction of movement and start an attack, and that there is little motivation for the player makes it hard to get started. Additionally, I made it to the first boss, and got incredibly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bought this because I'm a huge fan of KC Green from very ancient times (horribleville, graveyard quest, LAIDAD, etc) and wanted to throw him some walking around money. its not TERRIBLE but- to put it in the nicest way possible- they basically remade Castlevania II: Simon's Quest but with a cartoon dog
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/5cX3RhKgeOA Attempting to extend a simple meme into a full scale metroidvania platformer falters under it's own weight to be clever for a far longer than it can maintain.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm surprised that a "meme" gained such status that it's now a game. I enjoy this game, but it does have it's challenges. Such as the statue challenges. Anyway I'd still recommend this game, if you like hand-drawn sprites, dealing with anxiety, old-school platformers, then this is one of many games that you can play. (Especially if you're a dog lover.) :) I managed to complete the game, but haven't quite earned all of the achievements. (yet). Though, I do hope, one day there will be a (free)…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Movement and combat feel too imprecise and slow, even with the 20% movement speed upgrade. Things like fall damage feel bad, and when you get the upgrade to remove the damage, the long fall damage animations still exist, which makes the upgrade feel underwhelming. The hitboxes don't line up well with the attack animations, so often times when you're hitting something, it doesn't quite line up how you expect, and you have to get used to that. Maps feel very samey. Despite the achievements, I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-- Gameplay This Is Fine: Maximum Cope is mainly a metroidvania, but I would describe it as a very light one. While the game does give you new powers and lets you return to previous areas to collect extra items, those collectibles never really affect the main progression. The classic metroidvania feeling of unlocking a new ability, revisiting an old area, and discovering an entirely new path forward is mostly absent here. The structure is very straightforward. Each new ability obtained after…
