Toki

Adventure

Developer Microids

Toki is a run and gun platform game released in arcades in Japan in 1989 by TAD Corporation. It was published in North America by Fabtek. Designed by Akira Sakuma, the game has tongue-in-cheek humor mixed with the action. The player controls an enchanted ape who must battle hordes of jungle monsters with energy balls from his mouth. 2 words: no saves. Yes, it's a fun game and very pretty, but playing the first two levels over again every time to have another go at a boss on level 3 is quite annoying. What if I just want to play 5 minutes, make progress, and come back later? That's how people play video-games today. Get over it, Toki! But no! This game wants you to be obsessed with it. Players who liked Toki talk about gorgeous cartoon art style and animations; those who didn't talk about no save feature, frustrating for modern players. Which matters more to you?

Critics, per Wikipedia

In North America, Toki was ranked second among arcade games in a January 1990 equipment survey by Play Meter, while RePlay listed it in its January 1990 issue as being the second most-popular arcade game of the previous month. In Japan, Game Machine listed it on their March 15, 1990 issue as being the fifth most-popular arcade game for the previous two weeks. It received a generally favorable reception from critics. Computer and Video Games considered the game difficult but fun and addictive. The Games Machine's Mark Caswell felt the game was very playable and worth checking out. Henrik Fisch and Martin Gaksch, from Power Play, opined that it was a beautiful, varied, imaginative and very…

Well, I never thought that spitting would be so much fun! When there are so many gameplay videos I think trying to describe a game is almost lost time. For all those "old" gamers that fed the arcade machine, I guess you know what to expect. It's like a good friend from the past that had botox :) For the younger ones feel free to try it and you may realize that you were born in the wrong gaming era! Just don't stop spitting and you may find your love after all!

A remake of a 30-year old, run and gun arcade classic? Sign me up. Toki is back and it is the exact same game it was back then, only lavishly remade with modern cartoon graphics and sound. The game looks and sounds great. Its simple gameplay loop remains highly engaging and makes you want to replay its limited number of stages again and again. Naturally, being originally designed to gulp down coins at an alarming rate, the game is very difficult, at times even unfairly so. Some bosses in…

Positives first. Art and animations are charming and gorgeous, though more frames on the animations would have been welcome. Music is great as well. The game somehow feels very cozy to play. Now the negatives. I am someone who enjoys his difficult games, but the challenge needs to be fair. This game is difficult for the wrong reasons. Poorly telegraphed and inconsistent mechanics (Bashtar and the final rail segment respectively) ruin the final stages. I was able to reach the final stage with…

Positive review simply because it's Toki and it's a good version at that. Toki was one of the more memorable arcade cabinets back when I was a kid, the purple hand snatching the girl and the guy being transformed into a monkey, along with the soundtrack were iconic. Everything stands the test of time. I've seen others criticising the visual touch ups, appreciated them personally, the art itself would have held up regardless. I do however find it too clean which is why the CRT filters they…

I'm fan of the original game and I used to play it a lot. I still play it from time to time when I get that NES itch. But this "remaster" is pretty bad. It's short, took me an hour to complete it. I didn't enjoy it. If you are going for all achievements you are going to have a pretty bad time. - Bugged/broken enemies and areas in some levels. - Art style that tries to cash in on the popularity of Cuphead and other retro-inspired games. - Art style makes you die in stupid ways in some places.…

I had my dues promptly paid with hundreds of hours of Toki in both the Arcade and the Amiga versions back in the day, so I think I know my way around the game. Toki is a remake of an arcade classic, given a new look with HD animations. It still retains the same challenging gameplay with constant barrages of enemies and one-hit deaths, as well as power ups that never seem to last long enough. However, with some practice, you too can beat the game! It comes with 3 difficulty options, and some neat extra features such as a comic detailing the game's story.

Jump now has a dedicated button instead of being up which will save many accidental deaths. However they also removed the auto fire feature. Toki is a relic of a bygone era that has not aged all that well. And let's not prevaricate here, even the original game was not that great. It was undeniably beautiful but one-hit deaths, cheap enemy placement and bland level design weren't exactly a recipe for exhilerating gameplay back then and they conduce to nothing more than a harrowing experience in this day and age. This is a 30th anniversary update of the arcade cult classic Toki, one of just a handful of arcade titles from TAD Corporation (best known for a unique 3rd-person shooter called Cabal and a soft sequel called Blood Bros.) that is a challenging platformer about a hero trying to rescue his girl from an evil wizard, only he's been transformed into an ape that can shoot projectiles from his mouth and jump on enemies to defeat them...think Mario as an animal. This is another Thinking Rabbit adventure game, this time ported by fellow mystery game developer Riverhillsoft. Like Toki wo Koeta Tegami, it features a small town, populated by many characters, all voiced, but not all relevant to the case. The character portraits are pretty great.

Toki (along with Kisaki) was one of the main reasons this game caught my attention in the first place, and while the jury's still out on Kisaki, I'm so happy Toki has proven to be a hundred times more delightful than I could have possibly hoped for. #BowersArchive

Difficult platformer that relies on learning the patterns of all the enemies. Recommended if you like the old arcade game or difficult platformers.

Under £4 too! Looks amazing in a hand drawn kind of way, sound is good and you can actually revert back to the classic arcade noises/music which was very nice. So why am I giving it a thumbs down? Game is a nostalgic masterpiece ! Truly honoring the original arcade version, but adds a new look and sound to make it even better. It's definitely a challenge, but nothing a little practice cannot overcome.

Same as the retro game from the 80s. You can change difficulty, which is nice, since this game is not easy, due to 1 hit deaths. Had a frametime problem which I solved by going into Nvidia Control Panel -> manage 3D settings -> Program Settings -> add Toki.exe -> changed monitor technology to ULMB. Worked perfectly afterwards.
