What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 207 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (25,955 of 29,588 positive).
Some reviewers criticize the economy and political systems as broken or shallow. [1][2][3] Several players enjoy the freedom to rule as a dictator or benevolent leader. [4][5][6]

I just cannot enjoy myself, even though I loved Tropico 5. It feels like a different series. The economy just does not work properly in this game, with almost full employment, good trade deals and sensible management you can still not be making any money and be living in the minus. I've just turned on the game after 2 weeks with 110,000 in the bank and then within 10 minutes I've been removed from the game for …

Tropico 6 is an absolute joy to play and stands as the most refined entry in this long-running series. It successfully captures the unique blend of political strategy, city management, and satirical humor that makes the franchise so special. Who doesn't love making the poor work in my prisons for little wages while i become rich. Then the rich got tossed in jail just cause. Dictator sim at its finest.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Tropico 6 received "generally positive" reviews for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, while the Switch port received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. It was the fastest-selling game in the franchise, with the revenue it generated being 50% higher than that of Tropico 5's debut. CGM called Tropico 6 the "strongest entry in the franchise", praising its music, graphics, and writing, while recognizing the presence of minor bugs and jank, ultimately deeming the title a full realization of the series' potential. Shacknews heavily lauded the "incredibly addictive" gameplay, crisp UI, sheer detail, variety of strategic options, and comedy, and expressed…

The worst one is that unless I build the exact same entertainment and faith buildings in each of my districts/islands, citizens insist on visiting ones far away from where they live and work, which brings productivity to a halt. For example, I had a funfair pier in one side of the island, and people from everywhere spent their free time there when they already had similar options nearby. Once I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played tropico as a kid, tried it multiple times and enjoyed it. Last days I thought I will give Tropico 6 another go, this time with economical knowledge from games like Ymir, Eco, Soviet republic and so forth. And I realized, this game is made to be ONLY played as a tycoon. Many features are not thought through at all (like the budget system) and are just a facade of complexity. Which makes me quite disappointed and nodges me to play soviet republic in realistic mode instead. I do not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tropico 6 is a good game, but I don't know if its a good Tropico game, Tropico 6 basically throws the dictator aspect of all the other Tropico games that made the games unique out the window in favour of focusing solely on the city building aspect, the city building is good and definitely the best in the series but the game really does feel like its missing something without the dictator aspect that made Tropico unique and standout in the first place.

It smells a bit better than Tropico 5 though. For the farm system alone i should be the one who getting money to play this pile of ♥♥♥♥. You can't choose where the fields are planted, you can't choose where the farm building is set and you can't even mirror the placement. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Economy is so broken its basically unplayable, farming is a chore, nothing works the way its's supposed to, zero polish, mid citybuilding, garbage strategy, the entire economy boils down to a few metas that act as the ONLY way to not lose immediately. Democratic elections free healthcare happy citizens all of it. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played Tropico 3-4-5-6 and this one is absolutely my favorite after Tropico 4. It's basicly improved version of Tropico 4. I like doing missions on different maps and conditions. If you want to start a Tropico game, you should definitely go for 6. Although they still couldn't fix making roads. The building variety is also better than the other games. As you progress eras you have lots of options to improve your city.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not sure if it'd quite qualify as "city builder". I'd call it "base builder". But since others mention them: * *Dwarf Fortress* * *Rimworld* * *Oxygen Not Included* The above games focus on the interactions of various things you build. They have a very high degree of replayability. *Dwarf Fortress* has a very high bar to entry, but for all of them, you're going to be reading wikis and spending a lot of time understanding mechanics. I think that they all give very good value for money. *…

neutral · AI labelView post →Hear me out: As much as I love estabilishing dystopia and city building, this game doesn't feel like it does that, or at least, not in a really entertaining way for me. And I played Cities: Skylines in the past, so I thought this would be a step-up from it. But Tropico 6 plays less of a city builder, and more like a City Tycoon, or like those mobile Idle games, but it tries to complicate everything in order to be ''fun''. As far as I reached, everything is just ''Maximise Production and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Perhaps Tropico 6's biggest problem is that by being a sequel in a long-running series, it inevitably draws comparisons with the previous titles. In that respect you could say that it would be a somewhat middling game on its own, but it feels like a downgrade compared to older games in the series. There are a couple of positive improvements. For example, in past games you would commonly run into an issue where your garages become overloaded and your roads are gridlocked as your entire…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just revisited this game, and I'm giving it a negative review so i don't forget and revisit it again. Too many pointless and weird mechanics, not enough focus on the core gameplay loop, and everything feels sloppy because of it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →lost the election so i declared martial law and kicked out dissenters after militarizing my police. amazing game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a bit shallow once you understand the game mechanics. Far too many DLCs Like pretty much all titles by Kalypso it felt a bit too bland and forced. They didnt really get how to make the whole banana republic vibe funny. The raid building concept was not done properly, heisting monuments was silly. El presidente's advisors should be more varied and fun like back in tropico 4. Consider greatly reducing Penultimo frequency or having some other character instead.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wish they had a "meh" option to go along with the thumbs up and down, as a thumbs down feels to harsh. Overall the game looks as you would expect it to be, however as someone whos played Tropico since I was a kid, all the way from the original one up to the new ones, I have to say I hate the new style they have given the game. Ever since Tropico 5 they have gave it this "corny arcade" type game feel(almost as if its to pander to console players) and I really havent been able to…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you've never played Tropico 6 before, it's kinda like Civilization VI strategy combined with Cities: Skylines building, except the satire is cranked up way past max, choombatta. If you like both of those, or even just Cities: Skylines, you should definitely give at least the basegame a try. Also there's character customization which is very cool.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing the Tropico series since the original back in 2001. City-builders used to be one of my favorite genres, dating back to the original SimCity, but in recent years I haven't really enjoyed them as much; I find City Skylines boring and the more recent entries into the SimCity franchise lackluster. That said, this is a solid entry in the Tropico series, staying true to the series' formula and feel. Instead of deviating from it's roots, like the SimCity games have done,…

neutral · AI labelView post →A fun city builder that doesn't take itself too seriously. There's a good range of difficulty for tryhards and casual players, and the Latin jazz soundtrack is great for setting the mood of ruling a Caribbean nation. The story missions do a good job of blending challenge and humor without leaning so hard on the bad jokes that it becomes intolerable. My only critiques of the game are that: 1) combat is largely relegated to putting down rebellions (a sign that you are ignoring the needs of your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Better than 5, less engaging than 4, but overall I'd recommend it on sale. It's a solid city builder with some gameplay issues and an above average amount of stuff that feels tacked on or pointless, and the soundtrack in the whole series is stellar. I've never bothered with any of the DLC because none of it sounds like it adds enough to be worth the price, even on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Being a dictator is surprisingly fun, and the game lets you rule your islands however you want. The city-building is satisfying, the challenges keep things interesting, and the music fits the tropical vibe perfectly. The single-player campaign is especially great and kept me hooked the whole time. Overall, it’s a fun and charming strategy game that I definitely recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried to love it, but this feels like a step backwards from the previous games. Too many little frustrations

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this game unless you're a hardcore sim geek. Not even on sale. The constantly increasing happiness expectation means each level is a race against the clock. This considerably narrows the strategic options for each map. There's no room for play unless you put it on easy. Many of the money making buildings become a virtual liability 30% through the map so its a constant industry juggling game no matter what map you are on. The game is closer to a strategy puzzle game due to the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun but frustrating. A lot of the UI that you really need simply does not tell you what you should be focusing on, what the people are asking for, or where they are asking for it. The overlays are not very useful as everything is EXTREMELY green, people do not move into better appropriate housing without "encouragement" (destroying their current house), roads have a mind of their own when pathing, bus depots can only handle one bus, happiness is mostly dependant on "Carribean Happiness" (not…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disappointing. I played Tropico 3 and liked it very much, especially the satirical humour based on playing a ruthless dictator who skillfully pulls money from the great world powers' pockets while basically oppressing their own people and using military force if the osterity measures went a bit too far. Here, this feeling is gone. It feels more like a regular city building simulator. - There are demands that you have to meet or you will not be reelected / your citizens riot. You feel much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reinstalled Tropico 6 after a while. It took me so long to figure out how to not lose money (a few years ago). Now I play for a good while, but eventually get bored and give it a break. But it is fun. I'm irritated at the DLC. They seem a little pricey for what you get, which is a couple of buildings and a couple of other things, introducing new systems which is fine but..... like......... it's too much specific stuff and not enough general stuff. So I ahve a couple of the DLC and that's…
neutral · AI labelView post →I've really enjoyed **Tropico 6**. The satire is excellent, and the way it pokes fun at the era of Caribbean dictatorships feels both genuine and entertaining. The radio, the humor, and the overall atmosphere are what give the game so much personality. The main thing I'd like to see improved is the **raids interface**. It can be a bit confusing, especially when managing several things at once. I also ran into a small but frustrating UI issue a few times. If you're about to click somewhere and…
