What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (7,486 of 8,192 positive).
Many reviewers criticize the writing as cringey or juvenile, with forced pop culture references. [1][2][3] Some players find the controls clunky and certain bosses frustratingly difficult. [4][5][6]

There's something about this game I just don't like. Maybe it's the juvenile writing or the forced references and memes? Maybe it's the ponderously slow traversal of the levels or the tedious combat? Maybe it's the boring fetch quests that send you all over the place with no indication of whether or not it's actually necessary to complete? Maybe it's the various crafting stations and shops being spread out to random …

This is one of the best games I have ever played in my life. I have played a lot of various games. Some I love although I never got very good at them, like Age of Empires and other strategic games. I'm big on building and crafting games like Minecraft, I'm the best at First Person Shooters cause as a gamer I'm as dumb as a grunt. Grew up with an Amiga 500 so I'm fond of these retro arcades. UnEpic was miraculously …

A deep, challenging, and expansive Metroidvania that focuses on exploration and experimentation, but debilitated by extremely questionable writing, which produces awfully substandard and unsatisfactory endings. Positive: - Technical performance is excellent, remaining at a constant 144 frames per second with little to no noticeable drops. Attacking enemies, jumping, platforming, and utilizing the many keyboard keys …

Pretty fun Metroidvania. The writing is cringe, unless you're a dorklord like the main character :P But the build diversity which allow different playstyles is pretty fun. Had a pretty good time!

I bought this game around 10 years ago, played for maybe 20 minutes and then didn't play again until this week, and I’m glad I went back. The dialogue has aged poorly, and it’s all cringe-pop culture references, but the game itself is fun to play. The quests are varied, the map design is great, theres lots of different builds, and you have to think carefully about how you level up because at most you can get 2 …

60 of 219 · most liked first[Giveaway] I have some games to share with the world. After logging it to my old Humble Bundle account today, I've discovered I have quite a few games(and/or DLCs) I don't really care about and would like to share them with you nice people. 1st come, 1st serve rule ofc, unless you think a ruffle would be more fair (do let me know in the comments please). negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a complete classic — a truly great game whose experience was completely ruined by the sh♥♥ty level design in the Wizard Tower. These maliciously designed stages force you to rely on specific control-type magic to progress—it's nearly impossible to pass without them. Yet, by the late game, your attribute points are insufficient to invest in these control spells, which are only obtainable later on. Moreover, the game offers only one reset item outside of challenge Reward Exchange, making…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spent 19 hours playing all the way to the hall, only to be blocked by the "hardest boss in game" where almost every attack can kill you faster than you can heal. Even if you managed to reduce its health to 50%, it will then spawn unkillable enemy that will constantly hitting you and pushing you off ledge. This is not "hard but fun". This is pointlessly hard and totally luck based (unless you got that 1 or 2 correct build out of the hundred possible "wrong build").

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played Unepic exclusively on Hard++, first as a melee focussed character doing the challenges (You'll spoil yourself a little and I never used any of the items you can buy with the bonus shop points but it adds some interesting extra challenges and restrictions) and a second time as a mage. It's important to note that this is not the kind of game where you pick a class and go "Melee Only, No Damage". The game fully expects you to be conservative with your point allocations and choose wisely,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played through this game voraciously. I loved it. The writing was cringy, yes, and the player character is irredeemably unlikeable; but I genuinely liked the gameplay for the most part. I got mildly annoyed with the bad platforming controls, but I'm also kinda used to that from other games. The Neuron boss that most people complain about startled me when it mind controlled my character and forced me to dump all my potions, but I was willing to play along with that mechanic. Fortunately, I'd…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've spent years quietly hating Unepic, and now I finally remembered I can write a review. Short and sweet's best. It's been a hot minute since I played the game, but altogether: the platforming is generally pretty bad, combat can be unevenly rough if you don't just choose magic, and the story spends most of its time casually making fun of the player. That's fine, but then you get to the ending where it turns out the bad guy is basically just mocking you for being a total dunce, and then…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute hidden gem metroidvania. Clearly a passion project for a solo dev who absolutely nailed it. I'm always surprised that this game doesn't come up more often in recommendation lists for this genre. Great for m+k or gamepad. Lots of replayability due to the diverse build options. The voice acting is solid, the humor is surprisingly funny at times. I've returned to this game many times over the years and I'd guess it's my most replayed game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not really sure how I missed this game completely. I guess it was because 2014 to 2020 were rather dead for gaming for me due to my busy work schedule. Wow this game is super fun and the humor is also great. I am way late to the game, but I totally recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I tried hard to like this game, but the main character is wholly unlikeable. He's just a complete jackass and I want to spend as little time with him as possible.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Of the 8 friends on my Steam friends list that tried to play this, only one of them had the patience to go beyond 2 hours of playtime. You really need to be down with oldschool clunky games to get into Unepic. It's a game I've tried twice now. It's a game that requires a lot of patience as the different controls are many and somewhat unpleasant to cycle between. It's a big interesting dungeon that I want to explore, but I always lose patience with it and put it back down. It's cool to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A metriodvania with loads of character. The combat was kind of tedious, but overall became really neat. You have a load of weapons and spells to choose from until... You reach a boss fight that can only be challenged with range attacks. As someone who foolishly believed I could be melee focused. I quickly realized that this is the real ending and I'm not willing to restart the game to rebuild my character...

Bought it ages ago and played it, then uninstalled it many times, each time I would ask myself, "why did i uninstall the game?" And as soon as I start playing, I remember why. The controls are so bloody awful. Like, on keyboard I have to have one hand over the other hand to attempt to play it efficently, Ive tried to change the layout but there are so many other control keys that need to be swapped and it doesnt even give me a full keyboard and command list…

neutral · AI labelView post →Well this is a weird one. It's a stoner RPG. It's right on the line between funny and cringe. The game itself is solid. There's a huge amount of weapon variety and the entire game is pretty fun. The only exception is one boss with a very stupid mechanic.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has some ideas. Some are neat ideas such as lighting the castle as you go. Most are really, really, not good ideas. The writing ranges from bad to actually offensive. Sometimes, the bosses or enemy encounters are designed in such a way that you'll find out that how you built your character is wrong and bad and you should feel bad and you should respec or stop playing because you simply can't win as you are. Can't respec? Then die, I guess. Or sometimes you get dumped into a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unepic is a 2d Metroidvania RPG initially released in 2014 on Steam. You are playing as Daniel, an average guy who decides to use the bathroom in the middle of a beer-swaddled game of Dungeons and Dragons with his mates. While in the middle of using the pot, someone turns out the lights; when they come back on, Danny Boy is no longer in his mediocre life but in a cavernous dungeon filled with demons, weapons, and magic. As a typical side-scrolling platformer, you can move, jump, use your…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A legitimate metroidvania with a lot of weapons and items. It rewards the completionist for exploring and has tons of satisfying secrets. It offers some OP tools that break the world just enough to be funny and while the voice acting isn't the greatest, the whole game is VO'd, so it's still a treat. I actually picked up both UnMetal and Ghost 1.0, because of how much I enjoyed it and look forward to their next title.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best platformers I've ever played. Balance, progress, skills, build choices - all are perfect. Except the endgame as for me - but it could be personal: I just hate any time limits. So I've never finished the final part. But anyway I've passed whole the game except it many times - because I love the gameplay so much. Highly recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game! A bit clunky on some things like menus, jumping on ladders... Also as the game progresses, endgame gets HARD. Invisible things, hidden stuff... Still, very nice experience to play either alone or with friends!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →[Edit: After playing the Neuron boss, I can only recommend this game to people who don't mind being incredibly frustrated. He is a boss that prevents you from casting spells, drinking potions, or using ranged weapons. Essentially, all you can do is melee attack while he rapidly drains your life. The fight takes FOREVER. All of that is fine, actually, but the fact that your controls are reversed for the last 50% of the fight is probably a step too far.] The small character sprites and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried to return to this, but damn. I had forgotten how clunkly the gameplay is. It took me like 30 minutes to fix my controller because it wouldn't calibrate. One button kept failing to assign. After 8 tries, it magically fixed itself. Everything is so dark, every action has a two second delay. You gotta fish parasites out of your inventory. You gotta grind for materials for potions and essences for magic. You gotta grind for kill points for physical spells, which reset every reload. I got…

neutral · AI labelView post →KAMGUSTA'S MINI REVIEW I tried playing it multiple times but despite its somewhat interesting humor (mostly based on pop culture references), gameplay is terrible. Game captures some of the most important aspects of action RPGs and metroidvanias but it fails in translating them in a cohesive and solid gameplay. Just to name a few of the flaws, when enemies stack, you'll hit only one of them; controls are poor; levels are repetitive; fights are clunky. As of 2025, game shows its age and there…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unepic is one of those rare indie titles that completely took me by surprise. At first glance, it looks like a quirky little platformer-RPG hybrid, but once you start playing, you realize it’s packed with personality, depth, and an infectious sense of humor that keeps you smiling even while you’re being mercilessly punished by traps and enemies.

I've dropped the game for a while and getting back into it and it just isn't really calling to me the same. 👍 Captures the old school feel 👍 Was made with a lot of heart 👍 Has a lot of depth 👎 Captures the old school feel of user-antagonistic UI and controls 👎 Visuals feel unpolished and inconsistent 👎 Getting back into the game is a pain

However, after making my way through approximately 50% of the game, I am finally throwing in the towel Once you reach the mid-game, the game becomes a bit too much of a slog due to the combat having more breadth than depth. The game has tons of weapons and abilities to choose from, but the simplicity makes it so you can't really creatively chain together combos and some…
